THE GRANNY POD SOLUTION CARING for aging parents is a vexing problem for many Bahamians. In years gone by, extended family life was normal and aging parents often lived with their offspring. However, times have changed. Aging parents can be particularly challenging for the socalled “Sandwich Generation.” Sandwich homeowners are responsible for both their children and parents. In other words, they are sandwiched between two generations in one home. This can be somewhat stressful to all. Some Sandwich homeowners in the States have turned to something called the Granny Pod as a middle ground solution between nursing home and home care, or simply as a place for retirement, especially if there is a single parent. WHAT IS A GRANNY POD? Also known as MedCottages, they are prefabricated 12 x 24-foot pods designed for the backyard. They connect to existing electrical and plumbing systems. The Granny Pod allows both the aging parents and their children to have their own personal space while still being able to connect without the hassle of fighting traffic. Another advantage is older parents won’t feel so isolated. They can have a pet. If they’re mobile they may keep a flower of vegetable garden and help their children out (if they want to) with babysitting or laundry, giving them an important sense of purpose if they have too much time on their hands. If you have a good relationship with your parents, this is a
win-win situation for both parties.
COMFORT AND SAFETY Granny Pods are built with safety in mind and include a kitchenette, a bedroom and a bathroom. Everything’s designed in a comfortable, small-scale space with easy access. Features include handicap accessible bathrooms with railings and safety features and padded floors to cushion joint pains or falls. Granny Pods incorporate all the technology of a modern nursing home, including robotics to monitor vital signs. I’m not sure whether this type of advanced technology is supported on an individual basis locally and, if so, it will obviously come with a price. However, some of the technology, including webcams and life alert systems are available and affordable. Of course, any structure is subject to Town Planning approval and must be designed to withstand hurricanes. I am sure the concept of Granny-Pods can be adapted by local architects and builders. The construction industry is sluggish, so this is a good time to negotiate contracts for projects and repairs.

HURRICANE SHELTER YOUR LANDSCAPE THERE is no absolutes when it comes to preparing your landscape for a possible hurricane running through it. No one can say with complete certainty just how much of this or that tree you should cut so that they will receive no damage. However this is a necessary process for those of us living in the Bahamas. Landscapes are more likely to survive a major storm intact if they are maintained throughout the year. This includes routine trimming of shrubs as well as removal of dead limbs and those located too close to a fence, house or a utility line. This should be done early in the year – well before hurricane season begins on June 1 (According to South Florida’s water management district). Don’t wait for the last minute to have your trees addressed because if you are fortunate enough to find someone that is not busy at that point they are very likely to be in such demand that you will likely not get a very good and/or complete job and can end up losing your valuable trees as a result.
LANDSCAPES ARE MORE LIKELY TO SURVIVE A MAJOR STORM INTACT IF THEY ARE MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
1. Your trees will need to be thinned to allow storm winds to filter through the trees rather than crashing into the trees and pushing them over. 2. If you have coconut trees you will likely want to remove the nuts especially those that may be in areas where they have the potential to hit windows or cars or other wise be a hazard ( remember coconut water does very well being frozen so you can still have the benefits from your trees). 3. As most of us Bahamians know from experience we must be wary of any branches that hang near to or over our roofs because when the winds pick-up, trees that seemed a safe distance from a building can cover a lot of ground and still cause expensive damage to roofs and structures in general. 4. Have all of your landscape debris removed. Another reason to not wait for the last minute to have this sort of work completed as it may be difficult to have the cuttings trucked away in a pre-hurricane rush and these branches can become a hazard lying around your yard.
But so lets say a hurricane has already passed what sort of kit should you have to try to quickly get your landscape recovering? The following are suggested: Garden hose in the event your irrigation system is not working due to a power outage. Pruning tools ladder, tree stakes/rebar, rope, shovel, burlap or blankets to protect exposed root balls. If you are unable to secure your landscape immediately; do not use plastic as it will trap heat. Sharpened and fuelled gas-powered chainsaws, oh and bug spray. So far this year in particular I have been very encouraged by many persons that are being proactive about preparing their landscapes for this hurricane season. They are having all of their landscape concerns addressed well in advance so that it gets all done and well done!
