Attorney General says trust Christie over deal details By KHRISNA VIRGIL Deputy Chief Reporter kvirgil@tribunemedia.net  AMID questions surrounding which “worldclass hotel and casino operatorâ€? will acquire Baha Mar and the concessions awarded to bolster the deal to open it, Attorney General Allyson MaynardGibson, QC, said there is no need for concern, adding that Bahamians should “trustâ€? that negotiations are being handled by the “capable handsâ€? of Prime Minister Perry Christie. Despite the prime minister divulging some details of the deal including payment of money owed to contractors and workers among other things, public discourse

following his announcement on Monday night focused on his failure to give specifics on the deal’s concessions and the lack of a clear indication of the operator set to buy the $3.5bn project. He also was not specific regarding the development’s opening date, only saying that its doors were expected to open no later than the end of winter 2017. However, in responding to questions from The Tribune yesterday, Mrs Maynard-Gibson defended Mr Christie insisting that despite the lack of key information during his address, he remained focused on acting in the best interest of Bahamians.

FREE National Movement Leader Dr Hubert Minnis accused the Christie administration yesterday of using its time-worn tactic of “smoke and mirrors, hitting out that “secrecy and lack of transparency have clouded the deal to complete the Baha Mar project. Dr Minnis also questioned the timing of the government’s announcement on Baha Mar, which came just hours after the country was downgraded

by international rating agency Moody’s. Insisting that the announcement was proof that the government was trying to hide “suspicious deals, he called the lack of specificity troubling given the high stakes that hinged on the resort’s success. “It is apparent that the embattled Prime Minister Christie and his PLP government are once again trying to use smoke and mirrors to hide the broken promises made by the PLP, he said. By NICO SCAVELLA Tribune Staff Reporter nscavella@tribunemedia.net  TRANSPORT and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna Martin has urged residents living in areas affected by Hurricane Joaquin last year to pay attention to weather warnings, as severe flooding is expected in those islands from tomorrow morning. The islands she warned to be on alert are Long Island, Ragged Island, Acklins, Crooked Island, Mayaguana and Inagua. Her statement came after weather forecasters said a strong tropical wave located a few hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands has a 50 per cent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone through Thursday as conditions become more conducive near Hispaniola and the southern Bahamas.
