BAHAMAS Aquatics has another reason to celebrate as its team for the 30th Goodwill Swimming Championships will return home as champions for the fourth consecutive year. The 40-member team wrapped up the three-day event yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre in Couv, Trinidad & Tobago, with a total of 1,459.5 points,
well ahead of second place finishers Trinidad & Tobago with 1,269. Jamaica rounded out the top three with 1,007. On the medal table, The Bahamas accumulated a total of 129 medals, including 55 gold, 45 silver and 29 bronze to dominate in that category as well. Dwayne Davis Jr, who headed the delegation to Trinidad as the head coach, said they will be returning home on Tuesday to continue the celebrations. "This was a well-balanced team effort.
We dominated the majority of the relays from the first day to the last day," said Davis Jr, who was assisted by Micaiah Bostwick and Megan Reid. "The team was resilient. We had a well-balanced team from top to bottom and that showed in the scores from what we did over there from day one." Out of the 10 high point winners, The Bahamas collected five of the titles with Taylen Nicolls taking the girls’ 13-14, Mason Sadowski the boys eight and
under, Hannah Astwood the girls’ 11-12 and Blake Comarcho the boys’ 13-14. By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@tribunemedia.net IT didn’t take long for Carl “Flashy King” Hield to stop Colombian Oscar Cuero in his return to the ring after his disappointment at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, a couple weeks ago. Fully recovered from an ankle injury that prevented him from appearing in his quarterfinal match at the games, Hield stopped Cuero in the third round on Saturday night in Colombia. AID clay court tennis draws capacity crowd Jonquel has her THE 32nd annual AID Clay Court Championships wrapped up on Saturday at the Gym Tennis Club in Winton Meadows after two weeks of exciting tennis, with the final of the men’s open singles in front of a capacity crowd. In that contest, William “JJ” Fountain defeated Cailan Bowe 6-1, 6-0. Fountain, who was making his return to tournament tennis after several years, came through the draw unseeded, without losing a set, and had earlier taken out the #2 seed. UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Jonquel Jones had her third straight double double, scoring 23 points, and Marine Johannes was pivotal in a fourth-quarter run to help the New York Liberty beat the Connecticut Sun 82-75 on Saturday. Jones, who recorded her third consecutive double double game, also contributed 11 rebounds and two assists. New York (22-14) played without Sabrina Ionescu, who injured her left ankle in a 85-81 win over Los Angeles on Thursday. Before Saturday’s game, Liberty coach Chris DeMarco said that Ionescu was day to day and they were being precautionary with her. The Liberty, who have won nine of their past 11 games, got off to a slow start without Ionescu. The Sun led 27-19 after one quarter. This came after the Liberty gave up 40 points to the Sparks in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game. Jones then got going, scoring 19 points in the first half as New York rallied to take a 46-37 lead at the break.
JONQUEL JONES Connecticut (8-25) hung around and trailed 63-62 early in the fourth quarter. With New York reeling and the shot clock set to expire, Johannes hit a one-legged off-balance 3-pointer to make it 66-62. That started a 10-2 run by New York to seal the win. Johannes, who finished with 17 points, hit another 3 to close the burst. This was Jones' last time playing in Connecticut; the Sun are moving to Houston next year. Jones spent six years with the Sun before coming to New York in 2023.
