ABOUR Minister Dion Foulkes yesterday confirmed he has launched an investigation into claims workers at Club Land’Or are not being paid, stating: “If you work you should be paid”. Speaking with Tribune Business, Mr Foulkes said: “I actually met previously with one of the owners. He basically said to me the hotel is losing money and is basically a liability to them. They acknowledge that they owe the employees

money and have agreed to allow the employees to find alternative employment without losing their benefits. I told him at the time they have to comply with the Employment Act and all of the labour laws of The Bahamas and have to pay their employees.” He continued: “For about six months or so I hadn’t heard any complaints from the hotel. I got a letter two weeks ago from one of the employees stating the salaries and stopped. I asked one of my investigators to go over there and do an investigation. I’m still waiting on that report but under no circumstances

nmckenzie@tribunemedia.net THE Ministry of Tourism and Aviation said yesterday the total number of international airline seats available to Exuma this year is “comfortably above” the number required to fill available rooms, while acknowledging challenges of “higher and higher demand” for seats during holidays and weekends. The MOTA in a statement yesterday took issue with sentiments expressed by Exuma MP Chester Cooper in a Nassau Guardian article earlier this week, in which the Opposition deputy leader contended that a lack of airlift into the Exumas is holding the area back in terms of tourism growth. The MOTA said this assertion was “factually inaccurate”. Mr Cooper had commended Bahamasair for increasing its frequency into Great Exuma for the next month, but contended there needs to be substantive changes in the amount of airlift to the island. In response, MOTA said yesterday: “The Ministry of Tourism & Aviation would like to advise that the total amount of international airline seats to Exuma in 2018 is comfortably above the number required to fill available rooms. This calculation is measurable. And it takes into account scientific metrics which are
DIONISIO D’AGUILAR easily verifiable.” According to Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar, airlift into the Exuma has been one of Bahamas tourism’s success stories. “This has been achieved through the efforts of successive governments,” MOTA said. “The Ministry of Tourism & Aviation has been successful in attracting nonstop flights to Exuma by American Airlines (AA), Delta Air Lines (DL), and Air Canada (AC) from their respective hubs of Miami, Atlanta and Toronto. As a result, Exuma now has the ability to attract visitors on connecting same-day itineraries from North America, Latin America, Canada and Europe. Despite this, the credit ratings agency - in its updated credit opinion on this nation yesterday - maintained the country’s Baa3 credit rating with a negative outlook. This outlook, it said, “reflects potential downside risks to the fiscal consolidation process posed by weaker-than-expected growth, exposure to climaterelated shocks in the form of hurricanes, and implementation risks associated with measures to rein in expenditure growth and increase revenue intake”. Moody’s’ warned that absent successful fiscal consolidation, The Bahamas’ fiscal and credit profile would likely weaken. Mr Smith pointed out that government expenditure is a significant portion of GDP. “They are cutting back on
government expenditure as part of the effort and government expenditure is a very important part of GDP. If you’re reducing government expenditure and laying off people as they have done in the public service and also reduce the capital budget, government’s normal input into our GDP growth from a policy standpoint is being restrained,” he said. “In addition to that we have increased the VAT rate by 60 percent. Without income increases across the board that that basically shrinks the level of consumption which is the largest item in GDP. “While the fiscal consolidation is meant to meet targets for reducing the deficit it also has an unintended effect I suppose of reducing the rate of growth of GDP. FINANCIAL Services Minister Brent Symonette said yesterday that Bahamians will have to exercise greater “caution” when utilising ATMs, calling the recent Royal Bank of Canada “skimming” incident “unfortunate”. Mr Symonette said that while the incident was “unfortunate” it should be put in perspective. “It’s not something unusual, it happens in a number of places,” he said. “I think what we need to do is, as The Bahamas moves forward and it’s more difficult to go to a bank and cash a cheque, we have to be more vigilant. It’s unfortunate but I think patrons will just have to have more caution when using the ATMs.” RBC confirmed earlier this week that some of its Bahamian Visa debit and Visa credit card holders had fallen victim to “skimming”, with some irate customers reporting “thousands of dollars” having been wiped off their accounts. Employers and educators partnering for better business A
S students and teachers prepare to return to the classroom, there are some parallel truths regarding the educational and business systems in The Bahamas that should be studied and addressed. We often hear lament of the national “D” average in the school arena which many would agree translates into an “F” average in the workforce and various places of business. The evidence is easily accessible in the educational environment because tests, national exams, assessment instruments and report cards are given per child. In the world of business though, the evidence - while not always accessible- is just as clear. Our service levels are at an all-time low, problem resolution is almost non-existent, our products are many times inferior and limited, leadership is untrained and corrupt, workplace ethics and integrity is a thing of the past and skills and productivity are perhaps the lowest they have ever been. Maybe we should just come to grips with the harsh reality that schools are merely a reflection of the society in which they operate. Well, that’s the diagnosis; what we must now consider is the prescription. For parents, a good wakeup call to the simple reality

Palm Cay picks Amedu PALM Cay has announced the expansion of its sales team with the appointment of 34-year-old Bahamian-born Ahmahl Amedu. Amedu, is a successful restaurant manager with a track record of identifying opportunities and bolstering sales at a trio of restaurants popular with tourists and locals alike. The new hire comes as developers prepare to break ground on the new $100m, One Marina residential project featuring 84 luxury condos ranging in price from $800,000 to $1.9m. Amedu is the son of Jeannie Gibson, global communications manager in the Fort Lauderdale office of the Ministry of Tourism. His father is Nigerian. Amedu was born in The Bahamas, but grew up in “feeder” cities and states in the US responsible for driving tourism growth. Having lived in Chicago, Texas, Atlanta, California and Tennessee, Amedu is uniquely positioned to turn high-end travellers, particularly from those destinations, into second homeowners at the resortstyle development that employs some 100 Bahamians during its peak season. “They have a great product here. A certified personal trainer, he has a bachelor’s degree in exercise health science from Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. “Even when there aren’t opportunities, I create my own.” It’s that approach which impressed Myles Newell, director of sales & marketing at Palm Cay, who first spotted Amedu greeting guests and managing traffic flow and customer experience at a large eatery where he was manager. “Ahmahl had that positive energy that we want to develop as we grow the entire team at Palm Cay. On a full basketball scholarship throughout college, in his junior year Amedu received an offer to play with a EuroLeague professional basketball team. It would mean dropping out of college with only a year left to graduate. His father, Ahmed Amedu, was against the move. Eventually swayed by his dad’s arguments, Amedu declined the offer. Days later he broke his elbow during a Los Angeles basketball summer league, an off-season competition. “That was in 2005. I tore all the ligaments in my elbow. I was told I was going to lose most of the range of motion in my right hand and would probably never be able to play basketball again,” he recalled. “I found a physical therapist who got me back to the point where I could shoot and dunk a basketball again. That’s what made me decide to return to The Bahamas and become a physical therapist.” In 2009, Amedu was accepted into The University of The Bahamas (then College of The Bahamas) School of Nursing.

Stocks march higher on growing hopes for China trade talks NEW YORK Associated Press US stocks jumped yesterday as China and the US said they will hold their first trade discussions in months, a potential sign of progress toward ending their trade war. China will send a trade envoy to Washington later this month in a new attempt to end the trade dispute before it causes major damage to the global economy. The two sides haven’t talked since early June. Energy and metals prices and shares of industrial companies turned higher. Walmart soared after reporting its strongest growth in sales in more than a decade. Other companies that make and sell basic necessities also rose. Jason Draho, the head of asset allocation for UBS, said investors are eager for the two countries to start making progress and resolve their differences. He added that China may be
changing course because its economy has slowed. “The data we’ve seen from China recently has showed slowing growth,” he said. “It’s possible they decided ‘OK, we need to take a different approach’ and come to the table offering a little more.” The S&P 500 index climbed 22.32 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,840.69. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 396.32 points, or 1.6 percent, to 25,558.73 as Walmart and Boeing made big gains. The Nasdaq composite rose 32.41 points, or 0.4 percent, to 7,806.52. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks
added 15.09 points, or 0.9 percent to 1,685.75. China and the US have been in conflict for months over issues including Beijing’s technology policy and its trade surplus with the US. After the latest round of talks failed to produce much progress, both countries put taxes on $34bn in each other’s imports. Those tariffs are set to rise next week, and both countries have threatened even larger increases as early as September. Walmart posted its biggest gain in more than a decade in sales at stores open at least a year, and its online revenue grew 40
percent, a faster pace than it reported in the first quarter. The stock jumped 9.3 percent to $98.64, which wiped out its losses from earlier this year. Other retailers and consumer goods companies also edged higher. Target added 1.7 percent to $82.07 and Procter & Gamble rose 1.7 percent to $83.69 while McDonald’s climbed 1.2 percent to $161.73. Banks rallied as interest rates increased. Bond prices turned lower again. The yield on the ten-year Treasury note rose to 2.87 percent from 2.85 percent. $2.91 per 1,000 cubic feet. Metals prices also turned higher. Gold dipped 0.1 percent to $1,184 an ounce. Silver rose 1.8 percent to $14.71 an ounce. Copper added 2.2 percent to $2.62 a pound. That made up for much of Wednesday’s loss, but copper prices are still down 20 percent since early June. Stocks have swung wildly over the last week. Yesterday marked the Dow’s largest gain since April. The day before that, stocks took their biggest loss in six weeks. Global markets slumped on Friday and Monday as investors worried about Turkey’s currency crisis, then rebounded on Tuesday only to fall again on Wednesday on rising concerns about China’s economic growth. JC Penney tumbled 27 percent to $1.76 after it took a bigger loss than analysts expected and reported weaker sales. The chain also cut its forecasts for the year again. Dillard’s dropped 8.7 percent to $75.80 after its report. Other than Penney, most department store stocks have jumped this year. They dropped on Wednesday after Macy’s said its sales growth slowed during the second quarter. Macy’s inched up 1.9 percent to $35.81 after a 16 percent plunge the day before. Nordstrom and Kohl’s also
managed small gains. Symantec rose 4.6 percent to $19.41 after the activist investment firm Starboard Value disclosed an investment in the company and said it plans to nominate five directors for spots on Symantec’s board of directors. Symantec said it has been talking to Starboard for the past several weeks and is evaluating the candidates it nominated. Chipotle lost 4.4 percent to $502.70 after Ohio heath officials said tests from a Chipotle location came back positive for an illness that occurs when food is left at unsafe temperatures. Teva Pharmaceutical Industries jumped 7.3 percent to $24.11 after US health officials approved its generic version of EpiPen, the emergency allergy medication made by Mylan. The injections are stocked by schools and parents to treat allergic reactions to food and bug bites. The dollar rose to 110.88 yen from 110.57 yen. The euro rose to $1.1365 from $1.1346. Germany’s DAX added 0.6 percent and in France the CAC 40 rose 0.8 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 rallied 0.8 percent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell 0.1 percent and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong lost 0.8 percent. South Korea’s Kospi reopened from a holiday and tumbled 0.8 percent.

US energy secretary: Mexico’s energy independence good goal
MEXICO CITY Associated Press US Energy Secretary Rick Perry says he supports the plans of Mexican Presidentelect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to increase the country’s energy independence, even if it could mean fewer purchases from US refineries. The US is opening new markets for its energy

Perry spoke to reporters Wednesday in Mexico City after meeting with Lopez Obrador’s pick to become Mexico’s energy secretary, Rocio Nahle. He spoke on condition the remarks would not be released until yesterday. Last month, Lopez Obrador announced a $16bn investment plan to increase Mexico’s oil production, refinery capacity and electrical generation.
Mexico’s crude production dropped to 1.88 million barrels per day in the first half of 2018, compared to 3.4 million barrels per day in 2005. Lopez Obrador, who takes office Dec 1, wants Mexico to stop buying gasoline and diesel abroad. He has promised to invest in Mexico’s refineries and build a new one. “Developing your energy resources and the prosperity that comes with it is a
very, very good goal for this administration,” Perry said. He said the US is ready to help Mexico work toward that. Nahle said via Twitter Wednesday that her meeting with Perry was characterised by “mutual respect”, the term that Lopez Obrador has used to describe the kind of relationship he wants with the US. Perry acknowledged that President Donald Trump
had said some “harsh things” about Mexico, but attributed it to Trump’s negotiating style and said he believes Trump genuinely wants to have a good relationship with the US neighbour. “I think the president does have a very respectful and appreciative view of Mexico,” Perry said. “The president is different than maybe anybody that’s ever served there before.”

TORONTO Associated Press ELECTRIC car maker Tesla Motors said yesterday it is suing Ontario’s new government, claiming it was treated unfairly in the cancellation of a programme providing rebates to residents who bought electric vehicles. Tesla Motors Canada said in court documents that the decision by Premier Doug Ford’s conservative government to cancel the programme in July left hundreds of customers ineligible for rebates they expected to get when they ordered their vehicles. It claims Tesla was singled out. In July, the government said the rebates would be honoured for vehicles ordered through a dealership if they are delivered and registered by Sept 10, but Tesla sells vehicles directly to customers rather than through a dealership. “The decision has already inflicted substantial harm on Tesla Canada in the
form of lost sales and the creation of an impression among Ontarians that Tesla Canada may be singled out for future arbitrary treatment under the law,” the company’s statement said. The Ontario Transportation Ministry said yesterday that it would not comment on the situation because the matter is before the court. Customers who have been waiting for Tesla Model 3 cars to be delivered say the Ontario government’s move has them rethinking their purchase. Toronto teacher Kurtis Evans said he was planning to sell his current vehicle — and was counting on receiving the maximum rebate of 14,000 Canadian dollars ($10,068) to be able to afford the Tesla he ordered in June for 71,000 Canadian dollars ($60,000). “My wife and I are still not sure if we are going to take delivery without the rebate ... we are not millionaires,” he said, adding that he fears losing a nonrefundable deposit if he cancels the order.

TURKISH FINANCE CHIEF TRIES TO REASSURE INVESTORS ON CRISIS ANKARA, TURKEY Associated Press TURKEY’S finance chief tried to reassure thousands of international investors on a conference call yesterday, in which he pledged to fix the economic troubles that have seen the country spiral into a currency crisis. The national currency recovered somewhat from record lows hit earlier this week, a day after Qatar pledged $15bn in investments to help Turkey’s economy. The lira strengthened some four percent against the dollar, to around 5.75 per dollar. Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak was quoted by private media NTV as saying the economy would emerge stronger from the turmoil. Albayrak said Turkey’s banks are “healthy and strong” and that implementing structural reforms and maintain tight monetary policy to fight inflation remain a priority. The minister ruled out any move to limit money flows — which is a possibility that worries investors — or any assistance from the International Monetary Fund, NTV said. The lira had nosedived in recent weeks, hitting a record low of 7.24 this week, as investors worried about fundamental economic problems in the country and a diplomatic and trade dispute with the United States. Among the big concerns is that Turkey’s has amassed high levels of foreign debt to fuel growth in recent years. And as the currency drops, that debt becomes so much more expensive to repay, leading to potential bankruptcies. Also worrying investors has been President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s refusal to allow the central bank to raise interest rates to support the currency, as experts say it should. Erdogan has tightened his grip since consolidating power after general elections this year. In his conference call, Albayrak did not appear to specify whether the central bank would be assured its independence or hint at whether rates would be
allowed to rise. Doubts about Turkey’s future intensified as relations with the United States, a longtime NATO ally, soured. The US imposed sanctions on two Turkish government ministers and doubled tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum imports over the continued detention of an American pastor on espionage and terror-related charges. Turkey retaliated with some $533m of tariffs on some US imports — including cars, tobacco and alcoholic drinks — and said it would boycott US electronic goods, singling out iPhones. The White House said on Wednesday that the United States “won’t forget” how Turkey treated Andrew Brunson, the detained American pastor, after a court rejected his appeal for release. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also criticised Turkey’s move to impose tariffs on some US goods as “regrettable and a step in the wrong direction”. She wouldn’t be drawn on whether the Trump administration would respond. The Turkish currency began to recover after authorities this week took steps to help bank liquidity. Also helping the currency were moves by Turkey this week to gain favor with European countries, including releasing two Greek soldiers and an Amnesty International human rights campaigner from prison. Turkish officials said Erdogan spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which the French president said Turkey’s economic stability is important for France. Erdogan held a similar conversation with Germany’s Angela Merkel on Wednesday. Qatar said it would provide “a host of economic projects, investments and deposits” worth $15bn to support Turkey’s economy. The decision came after Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
WHY MARKETS ARE WORRIED ABOUT SUDDENLY COLD TURKEY? NEW YORK Associated Press WHY are investors around the world so worried about Turkey’s economy, when it’s smaller than Florida’s? Because of the possibility that somebody bigger will be next. Investors have been pulling out of Turkey’s markets, sending its stock market and currency plunging. That’s making debt that Turkish companies owe in dollar terms even more expensive to pay back, which only further weakens the country’s financial system. Turkish companies need to pay close to 5.80 lira for each $1 of debt that they owe, for example, up from 3.79 lira at the start of the year. The big fear, though, is that the distress could spill over into other emerging markets and cause a cascading wave of losses as investors pull out of other countries that borrow heavily in dollars and are dependent on foreign investors. Argentina? Brazil? South Africa? Such a thing has happened before. A financial crisis that began in 1997 after Thailand devalued its currency eventually sent markets reeling across the region in what became known as the Asian financial crisis.
Stoking the concerns is the rising US dollar and a Federal Reserve that has pledged to continue raising short-term interest rates. Such moves have historically coincided with pain for emerging market stocks. When US rates are higher, investors feel less need to head to emerging markets in search of higher returns. Many analysts along Wall Street, though, say they don’t expect another Asian financial crisis. Turkey has borrowed much more in foreign currencies than any other country, as a percentage of its economy, and investors question how much authority its central bank has to raise interest rates. Emerging-market economies broadly are also in much better shape than 20 years ago, with stronger currency reserves, say strategists at Wells Fargo Investment Institute. “Turkey is both more exposed and less able to do something about it than any other country,” says Brad McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial Network.

GOOGLE CLARIFIES LOCATIONTRACKING POLICY

Photo: Seth Wenig/AP SAN FRANCISCO Associated Press GOOGLE has revised an erroneous description on its website of how its “Location History” setting works, clarifying that it continues to track users even if they’ve disabled the setting. The change came three days after an Associated Press investigation revealed that several Google apps and websites store user location even if users have turned off Location History. Google has not changed its location-tracking practice in that regard. But its help page for the Location History setting now states: “This setting does not affect other location services on your device.” It also acknowledges that “some location data may be saved as part of your activity on other services, like Search and Maps”. Previously, the page stated: “With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored.” The AP observed that the change occurred midday yesterday, a finding confirmed by Internet Archive snapshots taken earlier in the day. The AP investigation found that even with Location History turned off, Google stores user location when, for instance, the Google Maps app is opened, or when users conduct Google searches that aren’t related to location. Automated searches of the local weather on some Android phones also store the phone’s whereabouts. In a statement yesterday to the AP, Google said: “We have been updating the explanatory language about Location History to make it more consistent and clear across our platforms and help centers.” The statement contrasted with a statement Google sent to the AP several days ago that said in part, “We provide clear descriptions of these tools.” Jonathan Mayer, a Princeton computer scientist and former chief technologist for the Federal Communications Commission’s enforcement bureau, said the wording change was a step in the right direction. But it doesn’t fix the underlying confusion Google created by storing location information in multiple ways, he said.
“The notion of having two distinct ways in which you control how your location data is stored is inherently confusing,” he said yesterday. “I can’t think off the top of my head of any major online service that architected their location privacy settings in a similar way.” K Shankari, a UC Berkeley graduate researcher whose findings initially alerted the AP to the issue, said yesterday the change was a “good step forward”, but added “they can make it better”. For one thing, she said, the page still makes no mention of another setting called “Web & App Activity”. Turning that setting off that would in fact stop recording location data. Huge tech companies are under increasing scrutiny over their data practices, following a series of privacy scandals at Facebook and new data-privacy rules recently adopted by the European Union. Last year, the business news site Quartz found that Google was tracking Android users by collecting the addresses of nearby cellphone towers even if all location services were off. Google changed the practice and insisted it never recorded the data anyway. Critics say Google’s insistence on tracking its users’ locations stems from its drive to boost advertising revenue. It can charge advertisers more if they want to narrow ad delivery to people who’ve visited certain locations. Several observers also noted that Google is still bound by a 20-year agreement it struck with the Federal Trade Commission in 2011. That consent decree requires Google to not misrepresent to consumers how they can protect their privacy. Google agreed to that order in response to an FTC investigation of its nowdefunct social networking service Google Buzz, which the agency accused of publicly revealing users’ most frequent Gmail contacts. A year later, Google was fined $22.5m for breaking the agreement after it served some users of Apple’s Safari browser socalled tracking cookies in violation of settings that were meant to prevent that. The FTC has declined to say whether it had begun investigating Google for how it has described Location History.

US APPROVES NEW GENERIC COMPETITOR TO EPIPEN WASHINGTON Associated Press US health officials on yesterday approved a new generic version of EpiPen, the emergency allergy medication that triggered a public backlash due to its rising price tag. The new version from Teva Pharmaceuticals is the first that will be interchangeable with the original penlike injector sold by Mylan. The Food and Drug Administration announced the approval in a statement. EpiPen injections are stocked by schools and parents nationwide to treat children with severe allergies. They are used in emergencies to stop potentially fatal allergic reactions to insect bites and stings and foods like nuts and eggs. EpiPen maker Mylan has dominated the $1bn market for the shots for two decades. Several other companies sell competing shots containing the drug epinephrine, but they aren’t heavily marketed or prescribed by doctors. In 2016, Congress blasted Mylan in letters
and hearings for raising EpiPen’s to $600 for a twopack, a five-fold increase over nearly a decade. The company responded by launching its own lowercost generic version for $300. Mylan continues to sell both versions at those prices, according to data from Elsevier’s Gold Standard Drug Database. Teva’s generic shot will be the first version that pharmacists can substitute even when doctors prescribe the original EpiPen. A Teva spokeswoman declined to comment on the drug’s price but said it would launch “in the coming months”. Generic drugs can be priced as much as 80 percent lower than the original product. But those price cuts usually appear after several companies have launched competing versions. Teva’s bid to sell a generic EpiPen faced multiple setbacks at the FDA, which rejected the company’s initial application in 2016. While epinephrine is a decades-old generic drug, Teva and other would-be competitors struggled to replicate the EpiPen’s autoinjector device.
UBER DRIVER CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING WOMAN IN SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO Associated Press AN UBER driver from San Francisco is accused of picking up a woman while off-duty and sexually assaulting her, police said yesterday. Kevin Barillas-Saballas, 30, was charged yesterday by the Alameda County district attorney’s office with sexual assault, sexual battery, kidnapping, imprisonment and criminal threats. Union City Police Lt Steve Mendez said the woman was intoxicated when either she or her friends called for an Uber on July 14 to take her home to Union City. Mendez said her driver was not Barillas-Saballas, but he picked her up and subsequently attacked her. Police did not release details
of the attack. Uber spokesman Andrew Hasbun said the company is working with police and immediately removed the driver from its app once informed. Hasbun called the police account of what happened “disturbing” and urged Uber users to make sure a driver’s name, license plate and car type match those of their expected driver before getting into a car. Riders should also ask the driver whom they are picking up. “If the driver can’t identify your name, do not get in,” Hasbun said in a statement. Barillas-Saballas was being held on $270,000 bail. It could not immediately be determined if he has an attorney.

Former US security leaders blast Trump for yanking clearance WASHINGTON Associated Press FORMER US security officials issued scathing rebukes to President Donald Trump on Tyesterday, admonishing him for yanking a top former spy chief’s security clearance in what they cast as an act of political vengeance. Trump said he’d had to do “something” about the “rigged” federal probe of Russian election interference.
Trump’s admission that he acted out of frustration about the Russia probe underscored his willingness to use his executive power to fight back against an investigation he sees as a threat to his presidency. Legal experts said the dispute may add to the evidence being reviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller. In an opinion piece in The New York Times, former CIA Director John Brennan said Trump’s decision,
announced on Wednesday, to deny him access to classified information was a desperate attempt to end Mueller’s investigation. Brennan, who served under President Barack Obama and has become a vocal Trump critic, called Trump’s claims that he did not collude with Russia “hogwash”. The only question remaining is whether the collusion amounts to a “constituted criminally liable conspiracy,” Brennan wrote.
Later yesterday, the retired Navy admiral who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden called Trump’s moves “McCarthyera tactics”. Writing in The Washington Post, William H McRaven said he would “consider it an honor” if Trump would revoke his clearance, as well. “Through your actions, you have embarrassed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage and, worst of all, divided us as a nation,” McRaven wrote. Trump on Wednesday openly tied his decision to
strip Brennan of his clearance — and threaten nearly a dozen other former and current officials — to the ongoing investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion with his campaign. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump again called the probe a “rigged witch hunt” and said “these people led it!” “So I think it’s something that had to be done,” he said. The president’s comments were a swift departure from the official explanation given by the White House earlier Wednesday that
cited the “the risks” posed by Brennan’s alleged “erratic conduct and behaviour”. It marked the latest example of the president contradicting a story his aides had put forward to explain his motivations. Attorneys said the revocation appeared to be within the president’s authority. But they noted the power play also could be used to reinforce a case alleging obstruction of justice, following the president’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his repeated tweets calling for the investigation to end.
