POWER OUTAGE FORCES SUPREME COURT CLOSURE Rights of citizens ‘placed in jeopardy’ by persistent cuts, says Bar Association By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune News Editor rrolle@tribunemedia.net THE Supreme Court was forced to close yesterday after a downtown power outage that reportedly began on Friday exhausted and damaged its backup generator system, disrupting court schedules and prompting the Bahamas Bar Association to warn that the administration of justice had been “materially” compromised. The Bahamas Bar
Association issued a blistering condemnation of the persistent outages, saying critical judicial facilities had been closed, matters adjourned and litigants and witnesses turned away. “When the doors of the Courts cannot open,” the association said, “the rights of citizens to be heard, to have their liberty preserved or vindicated, and to have their disputes resolved in a timely manner are placed in jeopardy.” COURTS - SEE PAGE FIVE

Eleuthera father dies in Haiti boating tragedy By LEANDRA ROLLE Tribune Chief Reporter lrolle@tribunemedia.net A FAMILY vacation to Haiti ended in tragedy Monday when a 39-year-old Eleuthera father of three died in a boating accident just four days into the trip, leaving relatives awaiting answers from
Haitian authorities while pushing back against online claims that his death was linked to drugs or violence. Andre Dean, of The Bluff, Eleuthera, was found floating in waters off Port-de-Paix in northwestern Haiti on Monday evening along with several others, according to his family.
He had left by boat on Sunday evening. The circumstances surrounding the accident remained unclear yesterday. His sister, Kenva Dean, speaking to The Tribune from Haiti, said the family was still waiting for authorities to explain what happened. TRAGEDY - SEE PAGE THREE
