GARDINER’S GOLD
STEVEN GARDINER, of The Bahamas, reacts after winning the final of the men’s 400-meters at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, yesterday. Photo: Matthias Schrader/AP
STEVEN Gardiner has done it again – and what a way to cheer up a nation! Thousands tuned in to their TV sets yesterday morning to cheer him on as he faced off in the Olympic 400m final against his rivals. We watched as Gardiner slowly powered on from a conservative start to become the unbreakable champion down the home straight finishing in a season’s best
of 43.85 seconds. Steely Stevie was a picture of confidence and composure, lifting the country’s spirit with every stride. When American Michael Norman jumped to a fast start, Gardiner quickly made up the stagger. When Colombian Zambrano Jose and Grenadian Kirani James pushed him on the homestretch,
six-foot-three Gardiner zoomed past them both and left them behind, his speed endurance far superior. When the race was over, he knelt to the ground, reflecting on his magnificent achievement. That is how you add an Olympic title to your World Championship crown – and become a nation’s hero. FULL STORY - SEE SPORTS
