hile the men’s national softball team closed out round robin play at the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia, with their only victory, the men’s national basketball team suffered their second straight loss. The two teams highlighted Team Bahamas’ appearance at the games yesterday as the men’s softball team knocked off Guatemala 5-3, but the men’s basketball team suffered an 84-77 decision at the hands of the Dominican Republic. Men’s basketball Once again leading after the first quarter (22-21), Team Bahamas - with only nine players in action - got outscored 20-16 in the second quarter as the Dominican Republic took a 42-37 margin at the half. However, the Bahamas went on a 23-20 surge in the third to even the score at 61 going into the fourth. On a 23-16 effort, the Dominican Republic went on to prevail. Michael Carey Jr led the attack with 17 points, shooting 6-for-19 from the field, 3-for-7 from the three-point line and 2-for-2 from

the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds and five assists. Grand Bahamian Kentwan Smith followed with 16 points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists and a block shot. Mark St Fort had 11 points and Eugene Bain chipped in with 10 points. Tavario Miller helped out with eight points and 11 rebounds and both Michael Bain Jr and Shavanno Cooper chipped in with six points. Bain Jr added five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Cooper had three rebounds. Despite the loss, Michael Carey Jr said the players, coached by Quintin ‘Three Ounce’ Hall, performed at the best of their abilities. “I think the reason for this whole thing is to see where the guys are as they audition for the next 24 listing that will be coming out from the Bahamas Basketball Federation,” Carey Jr said. “I think this team underestimated the competition because they didn’t know what to expect going in. “But it all came together. We haven’t been together for a long time and played that many scrimmages. We are talented, but it has nothing to do with talent. It’s all about the chemistry. That was something we didn’t have because we didn’t get to play together, so the chemistry wasn’t there.”

Carey Jr said if the Bahamas is going to make it to the Olympic Games, they need to have a core group of players that play together no matter what. He said the guys who came out and played in this tournament played their heart out. But it would be nice if they have a cohesive unit from the team that participated in the FIBA World Cup Qualifier. The Bahamas was waiting to see who they will play in their next game Thursday for either fifth or sixth place in the final positions in the games. Men’s softball With no chance of making the playoffs, the Bahamas men’s team, managed by Perry Seymour, won the battle of the two hapless teams by knocking off Guatemala 5-3 to produce their best offensive attack with eight hits, but leaving nine batters stranded. All but one of the players in the starting line-up came through with one hit with centre fielder Lamar Watkins, the lead-off batter, going 1-for-2 with two runs

batted in (RBI) and a run scored. Starting pitcher Lyle Sawyer from Abaco was 1-for-2 with a RBI and Grand Bahama’s shortstop Desmond Russell was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Sawyer pitched the first 3.2 innings, giving up three hits with a strikeout and an earned run. Alcott Forbes, in relief in the third, got the win after he suffered four hits with three strikeouts, a walk, a wild pitch and two earned runs in 2.1 innings. Thomas Davis pitched the final inning, striking out three. Guatemala also utilised three pitchers who combined for eight hits and seven strikeouts. Batting in the home position, Team Bahamas got a run in the second, third and fourth innings and two more in the fifth. Guatemala scored a run in the first, fifth and sixth. Track and field The final of the men’s 400 metres will take the spotlight today as Alonzo Russell runs out of lane five. Also in action will be Jamal Wilson and Donald Thomas in the final of the men’s high jump. The

men’s 4 x 400m relay team will compete on Thursday. Tennis After the team of Danielle Thompson and Simone Pratt fell short of picking up a medal with their fourth place in the women’s doubles, the women’s team, with Kerrie Cartwright and coached by Larikah Russell, will play in the semi-finals of the Nation’s Cup today against Colombia. Guatemala will take on Mexico in the other match-up. The final is set for Thursday. However, the men’s team of brothers Baker and Spencer Newman, Philip Major Jr and Kevin Major Jr, coached by Marvin Rolle, didn’t make it. Medal standings Still with six medals, including five - three gold and two silver from Joanna Evans and a bronze from Albury Higgs - in swimming, the Bahamas has dropped to 11th place on the medal chart. Mexico tops the chart with 272 medals, including 109 gold, followed by Cuba with 173 medals and 64 gold. Colombia is in third with 56 gold in their haul of 195 medals.

Funding needed to send national volleyball team to CAZOVA Men’s Sr Championships By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net ALTHOUGH they are scheduled to travel to Suriname on August 9, head coach Lloyd Davis said it will all depend on whether or not the Bahamas Volleyball Federation receives the funding in order for the men’s national team to participate in the CAZOVA Senior Championships. The men are hoping to follow on the trail of the women’s national team that competed in their version of the tournament June 28 to July 5. Unfortunately, the women’s team fell short of

winning the bronze medal. The men’s tournament will run August 10-15. Davis said they have a pretty solid team that could do very well. “This is the best that I’ve seen the men’s team look for the past couple of years,” Davis said. “They’re comfortable playing with each other and the main thing is for us to get to Suriname so that we can display our talent. We are having some financial challenges and we will have to make a decision by Thursday whether or not we will travel.” While it costs the federation around $25,000 to travel to Suriname, Davis

said the cost for the men is pegged at $29,000 and he’s hoping that they can find the necessary funds to travel. If the team fails to make the trip, Davis said the federation could be fined about $10,000 and possibly the Bahamas could be banned from competing in one or two upcoming beach and regular volleyball tournaments. “If we are penalised, we’re not sure when they will allow us to play again,” he said. “He said the organisers are looking forward to the Bahamas participating, having given them the assurance they will

compete. If we decide to pull out because of financial problems, the other teams may decide not to compete. We are going to try our best to see if we can make it,” he added. Those teams joining host Suriname are Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Haiti. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the Continental Cup next year. Looking at the team selected, Davis said they have assembled some of the best players available to compete right now. • Named to the team are the following players: Jamaal Ferguson, Byron

Ferguson, Shonari Hepburn, Renaldo Knowles, Rajahl Moxey, Je’Vaughn Saunders, Tonny Simon, Gaege Smith, Eugene Stuart, Donavan Wilmott, Kyle Wilson and Princtanique Wilson. “We feel this team can make the Bahamas very proud,” Davis said. “We feel confident that this team can perform very well because it’s one of the best teams we have assembled in a few years. So we hope that we can make the trip because we feel this team can perform very well.” Also expected to travel with the team is Lanza Miller, who will serve as an official in the tournament.

AFTER four weeks of intense competition, the Band Camp has been named the 2018 Sprite Basketball Tournament champions with a score of 98-78 against the Southwestern Division team. Demargio Taylor was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Mark Sawyer was the Spirit Award winner, and Nathan Sullivan, from the Northeastern Division, won a special award in a slam dunk competition during the championship game’s halftime show. The Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC) and the Royal Bahamas Police Force once again teamed up for the 10th annual event, which saw nine district teams compete for the coveted title of Sprite Basketball champions. The winning team and special award winners all walked away with gift certificates and Sprite gear in recognition of their hard work. Each summer for the past decade, CBC has funded the Sprite Basketball Tournament, as well as providing all materials for the players and coaches. CBC also provides prizes and giveaways for players, while keeping all participants hydrated with Sprite, Dasani water and Powerade. “This was truly an exciting tournament and we were very impressed by the sportsmanship of these young men,” said Nikia Wells, CBC marketing manager of communications. “The Sprite Basketball tournament was created by CBC as a way to offer support to the various communities around New Providence that we serve. We found a unique way to bring together young men, from a number of different community districts, for a fun, engaging event. “Over the years, Sprite Basketball has truly created a positive environment for these young players. Not only have they bonded as friends, but these young men have also built strong relationships with the police officers who coach and mentor them.”

MLS EAGER TO SHOW OFF ATLANTA SUCCESS STORY AT ALL-STAR GAME By PAUL NEWBERRY AP Sports Writer ATLANTA (AP) — The MLS All-Star Game is more than the league showing off its best players against Italian powerhouse Juventus. It’s a chance to flaunt one of its biggest success stories. The A-T-L. Atlanta United has shattered just about every MLS attendance record since joining the league in 2017, which made it a natural choice to host the All-Star Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Another mark could fall in tonight’s match, expected to lure upwards of 70,000 fans to this technological marvel of a stadium. “That’s why the game is here,” said United defender Michael Parkhurst, one of five players from leagueleading Atlanta picked for the MLS team. “It’s to showcase the city itself, the stadium, the atmosphere that we create here. It’s special.” Indeed, there’s nothing unusual about drawing such a mammoth soccer crowd in Atlanta. In its debut season, United shattered the league record by averaging 48,200 per game — more than doubling all but three other teams in MLS. The club is projected to go even higher this season, averaging nearly 52,000 through its first dozen home matches. The top five individual game crowds in MLS history have all been in Atlanta, which has eclipsed 70,000 for every regularseason match in which the

upper deck has been open . The target to beat for an All-Star Game is 70,728, which was the record turnout for the 2010 match at Houston’s NFL stadium. If the weather forecast holds — there was a strong chance of thunderstorms — the camera lens-resembling roof will be closed to ensure a comfortable setting for both the players and the big crowd. Too bad. The complex structure only recently began operating properly, allowing it to open or close in less than 10 minutes . Every other aspect of the $1.5 billion stadium has drawn rave reviews, setting it up to be one of the leading venues for the 2026 World Cup that will be largely hosted by the United States. The winning bid, which also includes Mexico and Canada, calls for six games to be held in Atlanta — including a semi-final. The stadium has already developed quite a reputation in MLS, with its chanting, flag-waving fans showing off their passion while giving United a huge home-field edge. “It’s surprising,” New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips said before a workout Tuesday at the stadium. “I heard a lot of talk before they came into the league about how it was going to be. I wasn’t sure, but playing here and watching them on TV, the support these players have is amazing.” Since the current All-Star Game format was adopted

WOZNIACKI WITHDRAWS FROM WASHINGTON WITH INJURED LEG WASHINGTON (AP) — Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki pulled out of the Citi Open because of an injured right leg yesterday, when the hard-court tournament also lost its defending champion, Ekaterina Makarova. The No. 4-seeded Makarova lost her firstround match at the US Open tuneup to Ana Bogdan 7-6 (2), 6-3. No. 2 seed Sloane Stephens, the reigning US Open champion, moved into the second round with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands. PHAM DEALT FROM CARDS TO RAYS ST LOUIS (AP) — Tommy Pham was traded by the St Louis Cardinals to the Tampa Bay Rays, a year after establishing himself as one of the National League’s top outfielders. St Louis sent the 30-year-old and $500,000 in international signing bonus allocation to the Rays yesterday for a trio of minor leaguers: outfielder Justin Williams, left-hander Genesis Cabrera and righthander Roel Ramirez. The move is another dramatic change for a disappointing St Louis team that entered the day fourth in the NL Central and fired former manager Mike Matheny in mid-July. The Cardinals are likely to miss the postseason for a third straight year for the first time since 1997-99. Pham is hitting .248 with 14 home runs, 41 RBIs and 10 stolen bases this season. He talked during spring training of a 30-30 season in homers and steals, and hit batted .358 in April. But he dropped to .197 in May and June. Pham is eligible for salary arbitration for the first time next winter.

Overrun by injuries to outfielders this season, Cleveland acquired centre fielder Leonys Martin from the Detroit Tigers before yesterday’s deadline in exchange for 21-yearold infield prospect Willi Castro. The AL Central-leading Indians will also receive right-hander Kyle Dowdy. While Martin may not be the high-profile name some Indians fans coveted, the 30-year-old Martin is a steady hitter and an aboveaverage fielder who will take away runs for Cleveland’s pitching staff. He leads the league with nine assists. Martin also gives manager Terry Francona another option in centre field with Bradley Zimmer done for the season following shoulder surgery and Tyler Naquin on the disabled list with a hip injury.

Swihart wins it in 13th, then the Red Sox get Kinsler from Angels BOSTON (AP) — Blake Swihart doubled into the Red Sox bullpen to score Eduardo Nunez in the 13th inning and Boston beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 on Monday night to move a season-high six games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East. Boston announced after the game it had acquired Ian Kinsler from the Angels to fill in for injured second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Hector Velazquez (7-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win and Austin Davis (1-1) took the loss after pitching a perfect 12th before allowing Nunez’s leadoff single in the next inning. Luis Garcia, the 12th pitcher of the night, struck out Brock Holt but allowed Nunez to steal second. Swihart lined the first pitch he saw toward the gap and into the bullpen on one hop for his first career walkoff RBI. The Red Sox have won 19 of their last 23 games and matched their biggest

lead in the division of the season. At 75-33, they have the best record in baseball and are 42 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 1946 season. They have won 19 of their last 21 interleague games. MARINERS 2, ASTROS 0 SEATTLE (AP) — James Paxton excelled in his return from the disabled list, Nelson Cruz had a two-run double in the sixth inning and Seattle beat Houston. Astros starter Gerrit Cole (10-3) carried a nohitter into the sixth, but Jean Segura ended it with a two-out infield single. Two batters later, Cruz lined his double down the left-field line. Cole was perfect through four innings while locked in a duel with Paxton (9-4), who was making his first start since leaving a July 12 game in Anaheim because of lower back inflammation. Cole retired the first 12 batters he faced, striking

Manny Machado homered in the ninth inning in his first home game with the Dodgers. Machado went 1 for 3 with two walks, delivering his 26th home run to center field off reliever Corey Knebel. OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Robert Griffin III rolled to his right and threw a tight spiral down the middle of the field to a receiver that was being closely covered by a pair of defenders. Several plays later, he dropped back and launched a 50-yard pass to a receiver running down the far sideline. Griffin is quietly making a comeback as a backup quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Though starter Joe Flacco and rookie Lamar Jackson have received most of the attention at training camp, Griffin hopes to make some noise at the annual Hall of Fame game against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. It will be his first taste of NFL action since 2016. “I’m very excited,” Griffin said. “I don’t think I can put into words how fun this whole process has been, being here in Baltimore and just having the opportunity to grow with this team. I just want to go out there and show they can trust me and hopefully lead us to a win.” Griffin won the Heisman Trophy as a junior at Baylor and was the second overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Washington Redskins. He was the NFL’s rookie of the year before his career was derailed by injuries. Griffin missed the 2015 season after sustaining a concussion during the preseason. After being released by Washington, he signed with the Browns in 2016. He started the regular-season opener, but sustained a shoulder injury. Griffin was able to play the

LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) — Alexander Rossi took a gamble Sunday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course that paid off with his second IndyCar victory of the season and fourth overall. Starting from the pole and using a two-stop strategy while the rest of the field pitted three times, the 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner finished 12.8 seconds ahead of rookie Robert Wickens in the caution-free race on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile permanent road course. The race covered 90 laps and 202.3 miles. Will Power was third, 14.7 seconds back. Josef Newgarden was fourth, and points leader Scott Dixon fifth. Rossi also won the street race in Long Beach, California, in April. The victory Sunday was Andretti Autosport’s 60th in the series. Rossi had a 23-second lead over Wickens when he made his second pit stop on Lap 59. Wickens took the lead but, because he had been so far back when Rossi pitted it, was only a matter of time before he would fall behind again. Rossi got the lead for good when Wickens pitted on Lap 65 and Power temporarily moved to second. Rossi cruised from there and his only problem was trying to do a post-race doughnut in celebration only to get stuck in the grass. He led 66 laps. Dixon leads the series with 494 points, 46 more than Rossi. Newgarden, the defending champion is third, 60 points back. Rossi led the first 30 laps until pitting, allowing Wickens to take the lead.

England chooses lone spinner Rashid vs India in 1,000th test BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — England is going into its 1,000th cricket test match with Adil Rashid as its lone frontline spinner and Jos Buttler as vice-captain for the five-game series against India. The first test starts today at Edgbaston. “Looking at the surface, we’ve decided we only want to go with one spinner, and that’s going to be Adil,” England captain Joe Root said yesterday. “With the amount of right-handers in what we think is going to be India’s team, he gives us a very attacking option.” Leg-spinner Rashid will earn his 11th test cap — and the first on home soil. Fellow spinner Moeen Ali misses out. While Virat Kohli’s topranked India is often more comfortable with spin, the tourists have toiled on England’s greentop pitches which can offer more of a seam and swing threat. India lost the past two test series in England in 2011 and 2014, and last won

in 2007. However, the series could be closely fought if the Twenty20 and ODI contests in July are anything to go by. India won the T20 series 2-1 before England rallied strongly to win the one-dayers by the same score after losing the first ODI by eight wickets. The selection of Rashid has proved divisive after he signed a white-ball only deal with Yorkshire earlier this year, with Michael Vaughan and Geoffrey Boycott among former Yorkshire and England players critical of the decision. Rashid last played in a test in December 2016 — against India. Buttler made a surprise return to the format earlier this summer. He is already deputy to Eoin Morgan in white-ball cricket, and Root looks on the 27-year-old Buttler as a possible future test captain. “He’s obviously vice-captain of the white-ball side. He thinks extremely well about the game, and has

a huge amount of respect within the dressing room,” Root said. “Looking at very long term, five to 10 years, I see him as someone who can really drive this team forward — and I think it’s a great opportunity for him to start doing that now,” he said. James Anderson has assisted Root since the start of the last Ashes series after Ben Stokes was dropped from the role following a late-night incident outside a Bristol nightclub last September. Stokes’ trial — on a charge of affray — begins on Monday and the allrounder will miss the second test at Lord’s, which gets underway on August 9. England announced its selection a day early. James joins other celebrities who have launched schools By SALLY HO and KANTELE FRANKO Associated Press WITH the launch of a public school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, LeBron James has joined a long list of celebrities who have sought to leave their mark on education centers. The NBA star, who recently left the Cleveland Cavaliers and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, was on hand Monday to welcome children to the I Promise School, built in a partnership with the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron City Schools. The school launches with a group of third- and fourth-graders and plans to expand to serve first through eighth grades by 2022. James has said the school, with a non-traditional schedule and year-round programming, can have a lasting impact for children facing the kinds of challenges he faced during a rough childhood. James grew up without a father, and he missed a lot of school because he and his mother lacked transportation. • Here is a look at some of the other celebrities who have been involved in creating schools, sometimes with mixed results: DEION SANDERS The NFL Hall of Famer co-founded a multi-campus charter school called Prime Prep Academy in Texas in

2012. He coached there and served in other capacities but had a rocky relationship with administrators and was twice fired and rehired. The school’s enrollment slid amid financial and administrative problems, and it closed in early 2015.

WILL SMITH The actor-rapper and his actress wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, founded the private New Village Academy in the Los Angeles area in 2008. Pinkett Smith said she was moved to start the school after developing home-schooling programmes for their own children, but it was embroiled in controversy over rumours the curriculum used instructional methods developed by Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard. The couple and school leaders denied any connection to the church. The school reportedly closed in 2013. Representatives for the couple couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

SHAKIRA The singer has funded at least a half-dozen schools for children in her native Colombia over the past two decades with her foundation, Pies Descalzos, which means Barefoot in Spanish. Those institutions included a $6 million school she dedicated in 2009 in her hometown, Barranquilla, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. She said then that her foundation’s work is about “breaking the myth that quality education is the privilege of the few.” MAGIC JOHNSON The Lakers legend announced in 2011 that he was partnering with for-profit EdisonLearning Inc. to lend his name and business skills to promote dropout recovery centers. The effort expanded to at least 17 Bridgescape schools in six states within a couple years with the goal of reducing school dropout rates in urban areas. The company and Johnson parted ways after five years, but EdisonLearning says four Bridgescape Learning Academies still operate with the Chicago Public Schools.

ANDRE AGASSI The tennis great ran the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy for at-risk youth in his hometown, Las Vegas. In 2016, the academy was turned over to an out-of-state operator, and it has been rebranded Democracy Prep at Agassi Campus. The school change was compelled by a Nevada state initiative that targeted low-performing schools. The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education also is tied to an investment fund that helps charter

school operators get access to buildings and facilities around the country. SEAN “DIDDY” COMBS The performer and entrepreneur added another role in 2016 as founder of the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School in the New York neighbourhood where he was born. He said it was a dream come true to create the school, which is part of a group of schools aimed at supporting historically disadvantaged students. PITBULL The rapper, whose real name is Armando Christian Perez, has been a celebrity ambassador for the Sports and Leadership Academy, which has locations in Miami and Henderson, Nevada. He’s appeared at ceremonies for the schools, which focus on sports medicine, marketing, business and management. The academy is overseen by the Sports and Leadership Academy Foundation, and he is not a financial donor. MADONNA The pop star founded the charity Raising Malawi in 2006 to help vulnerable children in that impoverished southern African nation. Its work has included helping to build schools there. It also funded a children’s wing at a hospital that opened last year.
