Alonzo Russell advances to 400m final By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net WHILE both the men’s basketball and softball teams continued to struggle to find a win in their games so far at the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia yesterday as fencing’s debut is now over and done with, the track and field team saw Grand Bahamian Alonzo Russell advance to the final by winning his heat of the men’s 400 metres. Russell’s time of 46.49 seconds pushed him well ahead of the rest of the field in the second of three semi-finals. He ended up posting the sixth fastest time for the final today when he will run out of lane five sandwiched between Costa Rica’s Nery Antonio Cardenas Brenes, who had the fastest qualifying time of 45.60, in lane four,
and Dominican Republic’s Luguelin Miguel Santos, the third fastest qualifier in 46.10, in lane six. Lidio Andres Felix, also from the Dominican Republic, had the second fastest time of 45.82 and he will RUSSELL run out of lane eight. Team Bahamas had one other competitor in action yesterday as national record holder Ken Mullings completed the men’s decathlon in fifth place overall with a total of 6,973 points. The medallists were Leonel Suarez of Cuba with the gold with 8,026 points, Jose Gregorio Lemos Rivas of Colombia with the silver with
100m in 10.97, fourth in the long jump with 7.19m (23-7 1/4), eighth in the shot put with 12.12m (39-9 1/4), won the high jump with 2.05m (6-8 3/4) and got sixth in the 400m in 52.22.

Men’s Basketball The men’s national basketball team suffered their second straight loss in the tournament, this time to Cuba (97-80) last night. Team Bahamas, coached by Quintin ‘Three Ounce’ Hall, opened a 28-25 first quarter lead, but watched as Cuba prevailed to go up 51-48 at the half. Buy the end of the third, Cuba used a 23-10 spurt to open up a 74-58 advantage and they never looked back as they coasted to victory. odybuilder Paul ‘Mighty Mouse’ Wilson and physique competitors Wellington Wallace and Raynor Ferguson all secured gold medals to lead the Bahamas’ 12-member team to an impressive showing at the 45th Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships that concluded in Mexico City on Sunday night. Team Bahamas, managed by Leonardo ‘Nardo’ Dean and coached by Raymond Tucker, had a total of nine medals, including three gold from Wilson in the men’s lightweight in bodybuilding and Wallace and Ferguson in the men’s physique C and D Classes respectively. The team also clinched two silver and four bronze. Not to be left out were Rashield Edgecombe with a silver in the men’s muscular physique, James Bain got a silver in the junior men’s physique and a bronze in the men’s E class physique, Jeremy Misiewicz won a bronze in the men’s junior physique, Lyndsay Curry won a bronze in the women’s body fitness and Shakira Ferguson got a bronze in the women’s bikini fitness C class. Other members of the team were Tarran Knowles, fourth in the men’s physique A class, Misiewicz, fourth in the men’s bodybuilding E class, Gemo Smith, sixth in the men’s physique C class and Tashara Seymour, fourth in the women’s bikini D class. Alberto Armbrister also
participated in the men’s physique. Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation president Joel Stubbs said they only took the 12 athletes based on their performances at the recent BBF Nationals in May along with the previous CAC talent from the other countries. Despite their size, the former CAC heavyweight champion said Team Bahamas was simple awesome with another gutsy performance against 25 other participating countries. “All of our athletes, with the exception of one, was a finalist,” said Stubbs who attended the championships with vice president Kenny Green, head judge Charles Sealey, who also officiated in that capacity, along with Wellington ‘Cat’ Sears. “It was really, really beyond measure, an awesome performance. It was really great to see Team Bahamas performing out there this weekend in Mexico City.” Stubbs thanked all of the athletes for preparing to compete at their best and coaches Tucker and Dean for ensuring that the athletes were kept in good condition. He thanked all his executives and the judges, including Green, Sealey and Sears, along with Michael O’Brien. for providing photo coverage of the team in action. Former federation president Danny Sumner, now the vice president of CACBBFF), was also in attendance in Mexico. The federation is now gearing up for the second annual Faye Rolle Classic that will be held at a venue to be announced on Saturday, October 27.

BIG BLUE BAHAMAS TOUR AT ATLANTIS By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net IN just over a week, the focus of the NCAA basketball preseason will shift to the Bahamas as the University of Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball programme and ESPN are hosted at the Atlantis resort. The Wildcats began practices last weekend for the Big Blue Bahamas Tour - a four-game, eight-day trip - where they will face several professional teams at the Imperial Arena August 6-13. “Had our first of 10 days of practice yesterday before the Bahamas. I continue to be impressed with this group’s toughness and work capacity,” Wildcats head coach John Calipari said in a series of tweets. “Got a lot done in two hours, including defence for the first time this summer. If we are going to be special, defence and rebounding will be the key. Lots of experimenting and lots of fun.” Calipari will welcome the second ranked recruiting class in the country, giving the Bahamas a first look at several potential NBA hopefuls. Headlining the class will be McDonald’s AllAmericans Keldon Johnson (No.9) and Immanuel Quickley (No.21) alongside EJ Montgomery (No.10) and Tyler Herro (No.39). “It’s been a real long weekend, but you know we are having fun getting after it competing. Point guards, big men going after it, having a lot of fun,” Quickley said following the team’s first practice session, “It’s going to be great, we’ve been in here killing each other, going at it. I think we are as deep as any team in the country so to go against somebody else, can’t wait to see it.” Sophomores PJ Washington and Quade Green have returned to the programme but the team lost three of its top four scorers (Kevin Knox, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Hamidou Diallo and Jarred Vanderbilt) to the 2018 NBA Draft. All games will be broadcasted live on ESPN’s SEC Network. The ESPN college basketball crew of Tom Hart, Seth Greenberg and Dan Dakich will be on the call. The Bahamian national select squad, primarily comprised of players from FIBA World Cup Qualification and CAC Games teams, will be the first test for Kentucky.

Freedom Farm U-12 all set for Cal Ripken Baseball World Series By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net FREEDOM Farm Baseball League will continue its summer of international competition in the Under12 division. The team is set to compete in the Cal Ripken Baseball World Series (Major/70) August 3-11 at BallParks of Americas Field in Branson, Missouri. They will take on Australia at 3pm on August 4, followed by a matchup against New Zealand at 3pm August 6 and the final game of the preliminary round against Puerto Rico at 3pm on August 7. The Bahamas is one of 24 teams competing in the division and one of just 10 international teams
alongside the aforementioned teams in their pool with Korea, Japan, Canada and Dominican Republic. Major 70 is a level of baseball beyond Little League but before professional that allows players to play on 70-foot base paths with a 50-foot pitching distance. It also allows runners to take leads and steal for the first time, playing mainly by official baseball rules. This innovation helped to prepare the youth for better transition to the 90-foot diamonds of the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15 and 16-18 divisions of play. Today, Babe Ruth League has more than 1,000,000 players on 56,000 teams in 9,000 leagues in eight countries and all 50 states.
FREEDOM Farm Baseball League’s under-12 team is expected to compete in the Cal Ripken Baseball World Series at BallParks of Americas Field in Branson, Missouri, this weekend. Just over a week ago Freedom Farm closed out competition at the Caribbean Regional Qualifier for the Little League World Series with an historic finish
for the Bahamas. The team claimed the bronze medal at the event with a 6-1 win over Aruba at the tournament in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico.
Participating teams in the event included Los Bravos de Pontezuela (Santiago, Dominican Republic), Aruba Center (Santa Cruz, Aruba), Pabao
(Willemstad, Curacao), Radames Lopez (Guayama, Puerto Rico A), Gino Vega (Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico B) and District 1 (St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands). Radames Lopez won the tournament 5-2 over Pabao and will represent the Caribbean at the Little League World Series August 16-26 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They completed the tournament undefeated at 8-0. It will be the first time a Puerto Rican side has represented the region in the event since 2014. After opening the tournament with three consecutive wins, the Bahamas suffered a four-game losing streak before concluding with the win in the bronzemedal game.

Meet third round pick Colorado State All American WR Michael Gallup. GALLUP-ING ALONG Rookie WR Michael Gallup turned heads Saturday at the Cowboys’ first day of padded practices in training camp. Running crisp, fluid, precise routes, all while picking the ball out of the air, effortlessly, the rookie was impressive to say the least. All of this as Gallup ran with the first-team offence and quarterback Dak Prescott. GROWING PAINS Despite all of the positive on the first day of camp, Gallup looked like a rookie on Sunday with drops during individual and team drills. There will be highs and lows during the season for any NFL rookie but

keeping the whole process balanced is the key. Gallup had this to say about his first three days at camp via Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News. “I wouldn’t say a bad day. Team Toronto will feature a group of top select Canadian players put together by head coach Roy Rana, who led the 2019 U-19 Canadian team to the gold medal at the FIBA World Championships.

Newcomb falls 1 out short of no-hitter, Braves beat Dodgers ATLANTA (AP) — Sean Newcomb came within one strike of pitching the first no-hitter by the Atlanta Braves since 1994, denied when Chris Taylor sharply singled in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Newcomb had a 2-2 count with two outs in the ninth inning when Taylor hit a hard grounder beyond the reach of diving third baseman Johan Camargo. That came on the career-high 134th and final pitch by the 25-year-old lefty. Newcomb (10-5) left to a thunderous standing ovation from the sellout crowd at SunTrust Park as manager Brian Snitker removed him. Snitker took the ball and gave it back to Newcomb as a keepsake — instead, Newcomb simply tossed it toward the Atlanta dugout as he walked off, wanting no souvenir of the near-miss. Newcomb apologized about an hour after the game for racist, homophobic and sexist tweets he sent as a teenager, calling them “some stupid stuff.” Ross Stripling (8-3) was subpar in his second straight start, allowing four runs, seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts in four innings. RED SOX 3, TWINS 0 BOSTON (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven impressive innings in his first start with Boston, J.D. Martinez drove in all three runs to increase his major league-leading RBI total to 89 and the Red Sox beat Minnesota for their 18th victory in 22 games. Martinez had a double, single and walk, and Andrew Benintendi added two hits and a walk for the Red Sox. The AL Eastleaders improved to a majors’ best 74-33 by winning three of four in the weekend series. Luke Maile had an RBI double and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added an RBI single in the inning before Gurriel exited with knee and ankle injuries. Teoscar Hernandez homered to tie the game earlier in the ninth for the Blue Jays, who won two of three against the White Sox.
Hernandez’s homer to lead off the inning was his 16th of the season. Gurriel extended his Toronto record of consecutive multihit games to 11 with his RBI single in the eighth that cut the lead to 3-2. The 24-year-old has batted .500 (25 for 50) during the streak, which ties Tony Perez in 1973 for the longest in the last 50 years in the majors. Jets’ Darnold ends Now 30, Dolphins’ holdout, inks 4-year, Tannehill will try again to make playoffs $30.25 million deal By STEVEN WINE AP Sports Writer

DAVIE, Florida (AP) — Ryan Tannehill’s pass travelled two yards before landing in the hands of a young receiver, who dropped it. Tannehill laughed. He doesn’t mind when a throw to his two-year-old son, Steel, falls incomplete. Their easygoing post-practice game of catch contrasted with what preceded it yesterday — two hours of spirited work by the Miami Dolphins. With players in full pads for the first time in training camp, there was a fight or two, plenty of trash-talking and one highstakes play at the end of a passing drill, with the losing unit required to do pushups. “It’s a competitive sport,” Tannehill said. “I like what I see from our guys as far as the fire.” Increasing intensity is understandable with the clock ticking toward another season, and it’s a little louder now for Tannehill because he turned 30 Friday. After missing the end of the 2016 season and all 16 games last year due to knee injuries, he says he’s fully recovered and healthy. Five days into camp, he’s pleasantly surprised his arm isn’t even sore. “I feel great,” Tannehill said. “I was telling somebody the other day, I feel like I’m 25. Thirty just sounds old.” Thirty is a little old to still be without a playoff appearance, as Tannehill is. But given the way such peers as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning aged so gracefully in recent years, Tannehill might have a decade or so left to play. “He seems to keep getting better,” coach Adam Gase said. “I guess I look at 30 now, and for quarterbacks it doesn’t seem — how many guys do we have that are 39 or 40 and MVPs of the league?” The best hope for the Dolphins’ future would be that Tannehill becomes a latebloomer. He has been a starter since his first training camp in 2012, and his best season came two years ago, when he was leading Miami toward a wild-card berth until sidelined by his first knee injury. He hasn’t played since, and these days he’s not thinking about the arc of his career. “I’m just trying to get better,” he said. “I feel like I have a lot of good

The New York Jets inked the rookie quarterback to a four-year, $30.25 million deal yesterday, ending the contract holdout of the NFL’s No. 3 overall draft pick. Darnold missed the first three days of training camp practice while his representatives and the team worked out the details. There wouldn’t be a fourth straight absence. Just a few minutes after the Jets announced the signing — which includes a signing bonus of about $20 million — on social media, Darnold made his way out to the practice field with his teammates greeting him with a “Rudy”-like slow-clap . A grinning Darnold made his way to the warmup line and got a pat on the shoulder from Josh McCown. Darnold then jumped right into position drills, handing off to running backs and throwing a few short passes before participating in team drills. But he fell behind slightly with each passing day, and it began to look uncertain as to when an agreement between the sides would come together. While the amount of Darnold’s contract was already clear under the NFL’s wage slotting system, the hang-up appeared to be over contract language. One issue was offsets, which if included could provide a team with a measure of financial protection if it cuts a player during his rookie contract. The Jets have historically included offset language in their contracts. Not having offset language, a condition that Darnold’s representatives apparently sought, allows a player to receive his remaining salary from the team that cut him, as well as get paid by another team that signs him. According to published reports, another issue was default language related to the guaranteed money. Some teams include
stipulations that could void guarantees if a player is fined and/or suspended by the NFL for disciplinary reasons. The Jets do not make details of contracts available. Pro Football Talk reported that Darnold’s contract includes offset language on future guarantees, but the Jets also agreed to pay the quarterback’s full $20 million signing bonus within the next 15 days and removed language in the deal voiding guarantees based on fines by the NFL. The 39-year-old McCown is the incumbent and currently the favourite to be under centre for New York at Detroit September 10 in the regular-season opener. He and Bridgewater took increased snaps in practices in Darnold’s absence, and coach Todd Bowles acknowledged that the Jets might need to bring in another passer to ease the workload on the veterans. No need now. Darnold will be able to do some catching up on the field and in the classroom, and will likely be ready to play in New York’s preseason opener against Atlanta on August 10.

His future has been the source of much speculation for several weeks, with retirement a possibility. “In due time,” Wade said. “Time will tell.” Wade briefly addressed the issue while on a call promoting his role as an ambassador for the upcoming Jr NBA World Championship that starts on August 7 in Orlando, Florida. Wade has become heavily involved in youth basketball in recent years, primarily because of his sponsorship of an AAU team and his son Zaire’s involvement on elite-level squads. “This is the purest

James, who this month ended his second stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, has opened a public school for challenged children in his hometown. The NBA great admitted to having “jitters” before the opening, an event he said is “going to be one of the greatest moments — if not the greatest — of my life.” The I Promise School initially will house 240
third- and fourth-graders. The Akron school will expand each year, adding second and fifth grades next year and will have students from grades 1-8 by 2022. James was to be at the school yesterday to welcome students and make his first public comments since deciding to join the Lakers. James spent 11 seasons with the Cavs, winning a title in 2016 to end Cleveland’s 52-year drought without a pro sports championship. His departure ended a four-year run with the Cavs after he returned in 2014 following four seasons with the Miami Heat. Following his eighth straight appearance in the NBA Finals, James said he was still in “championship
mode” as he headed into free agency. But he’s going to a Lakers team that missed the playoffs again last season and seems years away from competing for a title in the rugged Western Conference. James was also drawn to Los Angeles by the appeal of playing for one of the league’s most storied programmes and the chance to work with Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, the Lakers’ president and a player James idolised since he was a kid. James also chose Los Angeles in part because it represents the next chapter in his life. He already owns homes there and he has a film production company in the city.

ATLANTA (AP) — John Isner won the BB&T Atlanta Open for the fifth time in six years Sunday, beating fellow American Ryan Harrison in the final for the second straight year. The top-seeded Isner beat the eighthseeded Harrison 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at Atlantic Station to join Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras as the only Americans to win an ATP Tour event five times or more. “I’m very comfortable here,” said Isner, the 6-foot-10 former University of Georgia star. “I make breakfast in my own room, I go to the Publix next door, it really feels like I’m at home, and that helps so much.” Isner improved to 31-4 in the event, winning four matches in Atlanta after a 6-hour, 36-minute loss — with a 26-24 fifth set — to Kevin Anderson in the Wimbledon semi-finals. Isner won three straight titles from 2013-15, and lost the 2016 final to Nick Kyrgios. Isner has 14 ATP Tour titles, also winning the Miami Open in April. “I realise I was fortunate today,” Isner said. “I’ve been on the other end where you have four or five chances to put your stamp on the match and you don’t get it, and I just had one chance, and played a good point, and was able to win the second set, and had one chance in the third and got up early. GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) — Matteo Berretini of Italy beat Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 (9), 6-4 to win the Swiss Open on Sunday. Berretini was playing in his first ATP final, wrapping up his fifth straight-sets win of the week in one hour and 45 minutes. He fought off two set points in a closerun first set and secured the only break of the match in the second to secure the win. At 22, he’s the youngest Italian finalist on the ATP Tour in 15 years. Bautista Agut is making his way back from a hip injury he picked up during the Halle semi-finals, which forced him to miss Wimbledon, and was chasing the ninth ATP title of his career and third this year.

Ibrahimovic joins Ronaldo in skipping MLS All-Star Game By PAUL NEWBERRY AP Sports Writer ATLANTA (AP) — The MLS All-Star Game will feature one of the world’s most storied clubs. Unfortunately for the more than 70,000 fans expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo is not along for the ride. After Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup and his transfer from Real Madrid, the five-time FIFA Player of the Year took time off rather than accompany Juventus on its American preseason tour, which includes Wednesday night’s game against top players from Major League Soccer. The decision will surely be a disappointment to the big crowd that had hoped Ronaldo would make his unofficial debut while touring the United States with the Italian club that has won seven straight Serie A championships. Juventus acquired the 33-year-old from Real Madrid on July 10 in a deal his new club said was worth 112 million euros ($131.5 million) — the largest for a player older than 30.
Also sitting out the US tour, which includes three other exhibitions, is Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain. He is coming off a scoreless World Cup in which he didn’t start in the round of 16 loss to eventual champion France. “Obviously these guys are world-class players,” said Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan, a goalkeeper for the MLS team. “With or without them, it will be a difficult game. But their names alone bring a lot of attention. It’s a shame for everybody on the outside. For me, personally, hopefully it makes for an easier night.” Most players take three weeks off after the World Cup. Juventus opens its Serie A schedule at Chievo Verona the weekend of August 18-20 . “We are sorry not to have the Ronaldo, and Higuain as well,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said through a translator. “Unfortunately, they played in the World Cup. They needed some days to rest.” Ronaldo and Higuain won’t be the only big names missing from the game.
One of MLS’ top new stars, LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, announced yesterday that he’s skipping the All-Star match rather than make a cross-country trip to Atlanta. The 36-year-old Swede cited the grind of playing three matches in an eight-day span, including Sunday night’s 4-3 victory over Orlando City in which he scored his first MLS hat trick . Ibrahimovic ranks second in MLS with 15 goals. He played with Juventus from 2004-06. “I am disappointed to miss the 2018 All-Star game against Juventus, one of my former clubs,” Ibrahimovic said in a statement. “I want to thank the fans for voting me to the team. My main focus is to score goals and help the LA Galaxy to the playoffs.” The Galaxy (10-7-5) are unbeaten in nine games and have climbed to third place in the Western Conference. Per MLS rules, Ibrahimovic will also have to sit out LA’s next match Saturday against Colorado, one of the league’s worst teams. New York City forward David Villa also will skip

Atlanta United coach Gerardo Martino, who will be guiding the MLS team, said the timing of the game does pose problems. “In reality, I recognise it’s a little bit of a challenge for coaches who have players participating,” Martino said through an interpreter. “Some players are coming from teams where they’ve played three games (in the last week). Some had a long trip to get here, like from
Vancouver. I understand it’s a very beautiful spectacle for the league and the United States. “But I think what we have to look at in the future is to have it at a different time, either before or after the season. “We have to make sure the players arriving here in good condition are also returning to their teams in good condition.” But MLS is eager to show off its most compelling success story. Atlanta shattered the MLS attendance record in its debut season, averaging 48,200 per game, and is on pace to break that mark this year at nearly 52,000 per game.
The club already has the five biggest stand-alone crowds in MLS history — each more than 70,000 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The league expects another record crowd for its All-Star Game, breaking the mark of 70,728 in Houston for the 2010 match in which Manchester United defeated the MLS squad 5-2. An extra 1,500 tickets have been put on sale to meet the demand. “It’s been fantastic to see the support that the city has given the club,” Guzan said. “There’s not many cities around the world that have what we have here in Atlanta. I’m happy to have the opportunity to showcase this to everyone.”

Track and field On day one of the competition on Sunday, national record holder Katrina Seymour was sixth in her heat of the women’s 400m hurdles in 68.37 for 11th place overall, while Andre Colebrooke finished sixth in his heat of the men’s 400m hurdles in 51.45 for 14th place overall.
