OBITUARIES
THE TRIBUNE
Meet Michael A. Hepburn, L.F.D&E. Set Apart, Chosen “I am doing what I have to do to let my NAME be KNOWN among the people.” for fashion.
NASSAU MORTUARY MOGUL “I want to bury everybody, I want to be a friend to everyone , They’re All God Children.” From as far back as he can remember Michael A. Hepburn life has been immersed in end of life rituals. He has, in fact, been a lifelong student of mortality. Frequenting funerals as a young boy in Nassau later becoming a licensed funeral director and embalmer, and ultimately proprietor of Nassau very soon to be busiest mortuary, Michael has likely spent as much time in the presence of the deceased as he has among the living. He is equally comfortable in either realm, celebrating both life and death with a trademark style, equanimity and sincerity. There’s not much difference in the little boy growing up in Pinewood Gardens, Finlayson Street Bain Town, Ridgeland Park West, Balfour Avenue and Market Street. Jesus Christ, Discipline, Manners and Respect with a Good Education was the order of the day, instill at a tender age the principles of God in himself and other siblings, we would have devotions every morning before leaving for school and their Dad would annoint him and his little brother heads with Oil and Speak Life n Blessings over his children tho many times they fall short but for the Grace of God. They were not allow to do what many other kids could of done or our doing because the principle of the fear which their parents had in them even under the doting and watchful eye of his parents: Anthony and Judith Hepburn; grand parents Ralph W. Johnson the brother-in-law of Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Garnet King and Verdell H. Johnson; and Cleveland “teach and Mrs. Alexandria Hepburn the sister of Bishop Albert Hepburn aunts, uncles cousins the community and church members the man who is a mortuary mogul today. Born with a personality as big as his heart, Michael has always cared about making people happy, always worked hard to excel, and always exhibited an impeccable flair
Young Michael an 8 year old boy student who attend St. Francis and Joseph Primary School who would walk from school to his grand parents house through Bain Town once school was over where his dad would pick him up to carry him home, after doing homework and eating he would go outside and perform funeral service for dead animals using toothpaste box with mommys gift wrapping paper for the decoration of the casket and a needle pin to lock it with toilet tissue as the casket bedding along with using his bike as the hearse and conduct a complete service in the front of his parents home (the front door to be exact) and buried the deceased animals on the side of the yard. It was then I discover my Calling. “Many are called but few are choosen”, but the difference is Michael was choosen and he anwsered the call an allow my GIFT to make room for him. Frequently on Friday evenings after school once his cousins and hisself had change from our school uniform Michael Dad would drop them to Royal Ambassadors Meeting at Transfiguration Baptist Church, Market Street and he would walk down by Demerittes Funeral Home, sometimes without tellin anyone where he was going and then sometimes being seen going to view deceased persons often to whom he don’t even know they merely looked asleep, but the experience made an indelible impression on him. He realized that seeing the dearly departed appear to be at peace in the casket gave comfort to those left behind to grieve their loss. While most young people fear death, Michael first job, at about 13 years of age, not surprisingly, put him in contact with the deceased. Already showing powers of persuasion, the precocious boy talked his way into a job putting flowers, rolling casket and workin along with Mr. Higgs at Gateway Memorial Mortuary on Wulff Road at the time. Occasionally he was allowed to ride in the seat of the funeral car. On one such occasion, Michael experienced what can only be described as a calling, in which a voice spoke to him saying “this is what you need to do.” From that moment on, his purpose in life was clear. As the son of a Professional Chef I was expected to follow in my father’s footsteps, to take over his Catering Business. But the young man had other plans. The day came when Michael told his dad he was following his own dreams of becoming a “undertaker / funeral director”. One day after school, Michael who never strayed far from his dream, walked across the street from his high school C.R. Walker Secondary School to catch the bus to Restview Memorial Mortuary to meet Mr. Sean Pratt (former employee)who is a cerified Mortician to whom attend Gupton Jones Funeral College. My uncle Dion Johnson aka “Rabbie” refer me to Mr. Pratt a brother. Mr.Pratt taught me the Theorical / Practical knowledge and the art of embalming and restorative art in funeral service. He is an excellent Preceptor. Michael presented himself as a responsible, hard-working young man with plans to prepare for a career in mortuary science.
Filled with enthusiasm and excitement, Michael showed up after school the next day, and the next, and everyday throughout high school. He would eventually get employed by the company. There he learned the heart and soul of the business, office administrating, embalming, setting features, mixing fluid and massaging it into body cavities. What might seem gruesome and morbid to most teen-agers, was absolutely fascinating to Michael. He eagerly pursued any opportunity to learn every facet of the business including being the Office Administrator Michael would go on to assume responsibility for the hands-on, day-to-day operations, even driving funeral cars before he was licensed to drive, all while excelling as a student. Following the lead of his personal black hero Martin Luther King, Jr. and upon graduating from C.R. Walker high school Michael worked with Restview until he felt he was ready to advance theorical in the field of Mortuary Science when he was accepted into Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service Decatur, Georgia along with two other Bahamians Remourn and Rossneil Gibson to which each of our own parents supported us tremendously and Funded our Entire Mortuary Education. With his academic achievement intact, and part time job at Gregory B. Levett and Sons Flatshoal Location This firm would go on record to be recongnized for a Phenomonal Job on Bishop Eddie B.Long a Prominent Clergyman in Atlanta, Georgia and I Michael went on record to be recognized as the only Mortuary Science Apprentice from the Bahamas to be seen on A&E tv transporting a deceased that was murdered out of a Motel room on Memorial Drive in Atlanta, Georgia on the First 48 Blind Faith Episode 2012 Dekalb County, Georgia and transport deceased to the Medical Examiners Office (Morgue). It was an unforgettable experience. Michael earned an associates degree in mortuary science along with the academic achievement award, mu sigma award, and completing and passing the National and State Board exams for Georgia, and Florida (August 24th 2012) Graduating with a 97.8 G.P.A and being recognized with honors and graduating in the top 10 and 6 percent of class. Michael was also apart of the Pi Sigma Eta Mortician Fraternity where he served as the Senor Artist (Vice President), and also was a member of National Funeral Directors and Mortician Association. Georgia (N.F.D.M.A) While in college he continued to work at Levetts Funeral Home and A.S Turner and Sons North Decatur Georgia funeral homes where he had become an integral part of the experience. He also got a job working to La Baguette African Bakery Baking Bread in Snellville, Georgia. to which he was able to sustain himself and acquire knowledge as well as money to survive. After Graduation Michael return back home and continued with his employment with Restview Memorial Mortuary to which he worked at Both the Nassau and Freeport Office Location, that changed his life a little

bit. I waited on families, embalmed bodies, made funeral arrangements.” then went on to Cedar Crest Funeral Home and Finally Evergreen Mortuary to end this career as an employee. “It was The Journey ” Michael says, describing the varies experiences encountered at funeral homes but a blessing to which he was grateful for. Michael knew it was time to become master of his own fate. “I realized,” he says candidly, “I can’t ride someone else’s back to success.” The revelation of the vision to which God have given to him God manifested the opportunity that came at this age of 28years old. Now at 32yrs After being turned down from 4 different buildings but had vision and determination with perserverance while faced with all sorts of obstacles to which was use as a spring board to perpell me forward and to which made the enemy thought he had won, but my Faith and Trust is grounded in God to whom is the Foundation of my life knowing that all things work together for the good of them that love the Lord and are called according to God purpose knowing that God has already won the Battle and this is just a part of the process to which qualifies me for the VICTORY Believing, trusting God and Seekin God face opened the door of the Divine Favor of God Grace and made the approval on my life and on the 5th building to which At the time, the building housed a dental practice to which God use to began to establish Serenity Funeral Home and Crematorium to bring Glory to him which is the Purpose of my Funeral Home Ministry. While struggling to build the Mortuary Michael decided the time had come to stop hedging, and to step out in a leap of faith. Knowing that the Harder the Battle the Sweeter the Victory. First and Foremost I will NEVER let a situation or circustance define my life neither will I allow the perception of others to become my reality, cause I have a commitment but more importantly I invested sweat equity, I have been working all my life. I understood the process was more important than the product and I understood by being determained to chase something and being committed to staying true long after the mood to which had set in had left. Being committed I understand everyday of my life there’s somebody in the world that is depending on me. It may not be you and if its just about you your in trouble because I am telling you you’re gonna hit something hard in life thats alot tougher than you and will test your willingness its gonna test your heart to see how true you are, if its just about you and the product it will crush you. Alot of people need little money to be motivated, Alot of people need whatever the case may be a little bonus to get motivated. I don’t need anything but God, Breathe and Life. Everyday I wake up I understand I gat a world that depends on me. The reason I go at life with the zeal that I got in me is because Everyday I get up I understand its somebody in the free world thats looking up at me to see if I’m gonna keep going So I can’t quit. The thing we need to understand about everything that were apart of is that its a BLESSING FROM GOD, and when its a blessing you cant help but to give it all you’ve gat. So the opportunities that you pass up to be a blessing to other people which can save their life by just one encounter. Everyday I’ve made up my mind I am going to BE AM IMPACT, INSPIRATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT. The launch of SERENITY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM. #153 BAILLOU HILL ROAD (directly opposite B.E.C on October 17th, 2017. was the realization of a lifetime ambition and fulfillment of his personal passion and God Master Plan. As the franchise will gradually expanded over the years expeditiously, Michael has maintained the simple down-home charm

and meticulous attention to detail that defines his brand. Michael is a young U.S Trained and Certified Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer Proprietor within the Funeral Industry in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas with over 18years experience and 9 years as a certified mortician. Clients visiting the Modist Stone Hand Crafted edifice in the heart of #153 Baillou Hill Road (directly opposite B.E.C) experience a setting more like home than funeral home. The location is impeccably designed to make guests feel comfortable at a time when they are perhaps most ill at ease. Michael makes frequent appearances, warmly greeting guests as if they were old friends. With the philosophy that a funeral service is more a celebration of life than a mourning of loss, he has developed a widely recognized signature style that is uniquely Michael’s “We plan a service,” he explains, “that the family can remember with fondness. Michael prides himself on his services, including embalming, an art he started practicing as a young teenager. “Some people say [their loved ones] look better dead than they did alive,” he says. Michael calls each grieving family and gives them a plaque at the funeral honoring the deceased. Before bodies are displayed, he ensures the deceased’s head is tilted 15 degrees at an angle to the right., facing their loved ones. “This is just a shell,” Michael says while gazing upon a grandmother, who died of old age, lying in repose. “The spirit has already gone home to be with the Lord. You got your last chance to look at her. Now she’s just sleeping. They can be proud to look at her. She’s resting. She’s peaceful. She’s saying, ‘I got the victory.’” For Michael the fanfare and ritual of funerals was entrancing: men and women dressed well, fancy cars moving in a solemn caravan, extravagant floral arrangements—he adored it all. Still, it’s not the size of his business that will make Michael stand out; it’s the Services that he provides by type of experience to which the family desires to create he says you can choose to stay at Rosewood Bahamar or you can choose to stay at the City Lodge, your loved one has yet lived and memories be remembered. Whatever the service, whatever the family desires, contemporary or traditional, I make that happen,” “People go to any funeral, they don’t remember what happen. believe in the traditional.” “I need to make a statement. The person has yet lived because their memories live on.” Too many people get into this business because of the money,” “But me, I love the business I’m in, and because of that, I’ll go one extra mile to provide good service.” Michael said many in the business have gotten away from serving. “We had compassion for people and we really loved what I am doing. It wasn’t about the money.” Number one is often imitated, never duplicated,” “I’m not mad you didn’t call me. It just say you didn’t want the very best.” Serenity persisted, solidifying a reputation for pomp and circumstance and turning funerals into productions of pizzazz. But Michael have a VISION....... “I knew I had a calling.” I just wanted to be different from everyone else,” “I want to create a home-going celebration.” “It’s not How much your going to spend with me, its how WELL WE ARE GOING TO SERVICE YOU.” Personal Service, is the hallmark of my business, sets apart in a highly competitive industry. “I never want to seem too busy for customers,” I set the example of personal attention thats what I demand of everyone who works in my organization. Despite a hectic schedule, I make it a point to attend most services we conduct, whether I know the deceased or not, acknowledging the family, and presenting a plaque in memory of their loved one. With the philosophy that a funeral service is more a celebration of life than a mourning of loss, I have developed a widely recognized signature style that is uniquely Serenity. Michael mind drifted to images of Victorian-era pall bearers (funeral directors of serenity) in top hats and fine-dining servers in London with white gloves. He will incorporated those features into the Serenity “signature package,” It’s all designed to give the family a memorable experience. ECENTLY, in the voice note series, we started a conversation about character and perspective, and I’m just now realising the ties between the two. Outlook and perspective determine not only how you see the world, but they also determine how you view yourself in relation to the world around you. You may ask, ‘Well, what in heavens does that have to do with character?’ Let’s take a look at the basis of character. I truly believe good character is taught over a series of lessons and applied through a series of choices. It is not directly gained, and certainly not gained immediately. Because different experiences can shape our perspective, this can have a lasting effect on who we become. In essence, our experiences can shape or shift our perspective, thus shaping or shifting our character. To bring this home a bit more, let’s take a look at what I call the ‘character

BAHAMIANS’ FAVOURITE CHRISTIAN MOVIES BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET THERE is nothing like wholesome entertainment that the entire family can engage with, especially in Christian homes. And Christian entertainment has greatly evolved over the years; drama, love and comedy...anything you want is available this these days. There are tons of movies and films with religious undertones and Christian-themed plots. Tribune Religion asked readers to share their favourite Christian entertainment. Anastasia Greene said the movie “The Preacher’s Wife” will always be one of her favourite faith basedmovies. The 1996 film stars Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington and follows the life of an innercity pastor who begins to doubt himself and is visited by an angel. This heavenly emissary is supposed to help the reverend over his midlife crisis, but he is

LIKE Queen Esther, we have been born for such a time as this to make a difference with our spiritual gifts. She was faced with a formidable foe who planned to annihilate her people, the Jews. She prayed and fasted to hear from God with her circle of faithful prayer partners, along with her uncle, Mordecai. Just as she needed wisdom, courage and strength to persevere, so do we. We too must fast and pray together, drawing on historical collective knowledge, current insight and foresight to shape vision and action for the future. We have indeed come to God’s Kingdom for such a time as this. It is both the worst and the best of times.
distracted by the cleric’s lovely wife. “Christmas is my favourite time of the year, as cliche as it sounds, but it is. So this movie touches me in more ways than one. I love movies that can bring my family together in one space where we can laugh and sometimes share tears of joy. This is one of those movies. I have this thing where I don’t like to watch Christmas movies before the season arrives, so it builds such a great momentum for me to look forward to,” said Anastasia. For Karen Johnson, it’s the 2015 drama “War Room” film that stars Priscilla Shirer and Beth Moore. The follows the Jordan family, who have great jobs, a beautiful daughter (Alena Pitts) and a dream house, yet something is amiss. 2 Cor. 4: 7-10 (NRSV) speaks to this situation: “But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.” It is the worst of times for those of us in particular who have not lived through any of the World Wars, who have not been in countries where there were other disease outbreaks, or who have not had a series of natural disasters to disrupt our relatively peaceful existence. We are still reeling from the shocks of current global events. On the other hand, it is the best of times because we have every technological aid needed to carry the gospel to the ends of the world, and we have a need for the Lord like never before. As we draw closer to the time when Jesus returns (whenever that will be), we can also draw closer to our God who has promised never to
determine character. Now, here’s the thing
about true good character. You can’t just follow the checklist when it suits you and call that good character. True good character is not determined by the possible affirmation you will receive. Character is who you are when you think no one else is paying attention. Our character – good or bad – boils down to our private thoughts, words and deeds. These are the ideals that make us who we are after all. As I intimated before, we all want affirmation, so we do things for or to others, depending on who it is, that we think will get us public, person to person, positive recognition. However, ask yourself the following questions: •Would I still do the right thing, even if I got no benefit from it? •Would I still commit an act, even if I was sure no one would ever find out about it? •Is my behaviour good character, or is it really good crowd control? In other words, is this who I am or is this who I want to be perceived
as? These are all character questions. Once asked and (honestly) answered by yourself, they tend to lead to a discovery or revelation of your true nature. Recently, we have come up with all sorts of disorders to explain away questionable character. I am hardly one to negate any malady or malfunction of the human psyche, but in many cases a marred character is a condition of the human spirit. We can fix it, in part, by consistently recapping and measuring ourselves against the checklist: 1. Am I a person who patient, kind, faithful and loyal – all the time? 2. Can others trust and depend on me – consistently and without question? 3. Am I fickle, flighty, double-minded or unstable, or do I perpetuate self-control? 4. Am I genuine and sincere in my well-wishes for others, or is my desire often to manipulate or control a situation with my “false” affirmations? The answers to these questions will give us so

leave us or forsake us. The fields are riper than ever before. May we be true to our call to make disciples for Jesus Christ bringing his marvelous light to the deep darkness of despair, devastation and degradation. 1. The Apostle Peter had his word for the Jews in I Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 2. The Apostle Paul had his word for the Gentiles in 1 Corinthians, speaking of his ability to adapt himself to the needs of his hearers: “For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them.” 3. The woman at the well had her constituency. This nameless Samaritan woman (John 4:1-42) is open to her life being transformed by engaging in a deep discussion with a strange Jewish male who is an authority figure in the opposing religious community. Mission: The role of this institution is to protect society, punish offenders temporarily, and ultimately to prepare inmates to return fully rehabilitated to a forgiving and supportive society. Rehabilitation: This is the offer of hope, healing and help. Social Reality: There is a great need for social reform in areas of home life (abuse, addiction, poverty, hopelessness, violence), communal attitude (accomplices because of apathy, indifference, greed, materialism). Improvements for reform: Money (tax revenue consistently collected e.g. customs, public donations sent to an account ), Case management staff expanded to provide regular evaluation and counselling (daily first week, every other day during the second week, every week thereafter), spiritual director to journey with the inmate for entire period of incarceration and after release, restitution plan (one third of one’s pay goes to the victim or victim’s family, reconciliation plan (one third goes to the inmates dependents), restoration plan (one third goes on account for the inmate to
community that Jesus knows her story but has offered her salvation all the same. They respond to her message to seek him out for themselves. This is how we are to share with others. Tell them what you needed from God, and what is it that God has done for you and is still doing. 4. The Hebrew Midwives (Ex. 1:15-21) model for us what it is to disobey authority albeit needing to do so craftily. They save Moses and other male Hebrew babies by refusing to kill them at birth. We are all required to examine our own lives to see where we need to show more courage in the face of wrong that we meet. Do we buckle under the weight of probable opposition? Do we just go with the flow taking the path of least resistance? One of the ways that COVID-19 has propelled us forward is the way in which social distancing which is so necessary is almost impossible in certain institutions. As we continue to make improvements at our correctional facility, let us keep in the forefront of our minds ways to rehabilitate our brothers and sisters more effectively so as to utilise their gifts and talents for nation-building:
much insight into our perspective as well as our character, and truthfully, that is no easy task. As previously shared, good character and a positive perspective are difficult to develop, and in many cases, even harder to maintain. The first step, though, is understanding, full well, that who we really are should never be determined by how much attention, affirmation or applause we receive. The way we truly see things can be informed by others but any necessary change must be intentional, internal and inspired by personal choice. Character and perspective are a matter of intentional practice and repetition. If you practice the negative, that will be the result. If you practice the positive – your result will be in-kind. The true lesson here, young people, and anyone else reading, for that matter, is this: Good character and a positive perspective aren’t controlled by the publicity light switch – either you have them or you don’t. God bless you this week!

KEEPERS OF THE TEMPLE CONGREGATION WELCOMED IN EXUMA By VANESSA C SMITH
REV Stephen Smith and the Ebenezer Union Baptist congregation were happy to welcome with open arms Dr Delton Ellis, his wife Anna, and an entourage of family and friends during a recent worship service in Exuma. Dr Ellis, author and leader of the Keepers of the Temple Ministries, and his fellow guests were serenaded by a young church member, Kaymika Milford, who gave her rendition of “Goodness Of God...All My Life you have been Faithful”. Following this, Dr Ellis took to the pulpit to speak about the importance of trusting God. He said as we are going through the global pandemic, and we must not come out the same way we went in. He urged the congregants to always lend a helping hand to others. No matter your resources, there is always

Random acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life, he said. To demonstrate, Dr Ellis asked two men to display an act of kindness to the birthday celebrants, Sisters Irene Rolle and Fredrica Knowles. Dr Ellis said we must learn to trust, and this includes consistency, compassion, communication and competency.
“We must develop a good relationship with Jesus. Sometimes we may not know everything when we set out, but God will see us through. God provided for our forefathers, and He will continue to provide for us. Trust God from the bottom of your heart. Yes, invest as you have the opportunity and put your complete trust in God. Hear and listen to the voice of God. Trust Him for the next move. Not your selfish desire, but
what God has for you. Do not lose courage, do not fret. No matter how bad things can get, God can turn it around in the blink of an eye. God can do it. You can trust Him. He will Bless you; He will keep you,” he said. Dr Ellis then prayed a blessing upon Rev Smith and the entire Ebenezer church family. In attendance were also Rev Cedric Smith and his wife Jenniemae; Pastor Emeritus of
Everette Hart and his wife Lee, and Superintendent Ferguson of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
