HOME SWEET HOME
By Mike Lightbourn
WHAT does a home mean to you? Ask anyone this question and you’ll likely get a bundle of answers. I’m not talking about the dictionary definition of a home as a place to live permanently, or as a member of a family or household. This goes a lot deeper. Everyone yearns for a comfort zone. A place where you can feel calm and safe. Where you look forward to returning after a day at work, an outing or a holiday. Home is a feeling of contentment and happiness. It’s something you can share with family and friends, whether it’s around a dining room table, in a living room or on a porch. The environment you create doesn’t just affect you, it will make an impression on buyers. If your home is just brick and mortar to you, follow these steps to create a special place that pulls you. And remember, buyers are attracted to homes that evoke feelings or comfort, calmness and security. These tips are especially helpful if you’re preparing your home for a sale. Go Green Plants aren’t just visually pleasing. Studies show they can create a calming environment, ease anxiety and promote a better night’s sleep through fragrance and by improving air quality. Jasmine, rosemary, aloe, English Ivy and Areca palms are some of the plants that fall into this category. They can grow indoors and outdoors. Electronic No No Spaghetti-like tangles of cords and cables are a turn off. If you don’t have small wireless devices, tie up the cords in a cabinet or hide behind a console. Designate a single drawer for techie stuff, such as power chargers, batteries and remote controls.
Declutter Keep your home clean and tidy. Going home to a mess at the end of the day is not conducive to relaxing. After a hard day at work or play and sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, the home should convey a sense of calmness through order. Soothing Colours Create a soothing environment with soft pastels, creams or off whites. Avoid dark and bright colours – especially bright yellows, oranges and reds. Soft blues and greens are calming. Avoid busy patterns on furniture and curtains. They can be distracting. Soft Lighting Bright overhead lighting can be hard on the eyes and nerves. Use soft lighting to create ambience. A dimmer will allow you to turn lights up or down. Fresh Flowers Place a potted flowering orchid or cut flowers in your favourite room or rotate outdoor flowering plants inside. Flowers provide a nice focal point and promote cheer.

Get a Dog or Cat Studies show pets help reduce stress. Sure, they can create a mess, but if you love them, you will be rewarded in love tenfold, not to mention the entertainment they provide. Bring the Tropics indoor with
PLANTS
AS hard as it may be for some to believe, indoor plants are grown and chosen for their ease of maintenance. They are usually of the tropical variety of plants, those that are able to survive in low light conditions and generally take just the basic amount of attention to keep them going. So as you can see, there really is no reason why you shouldn’t go out and get yourself an indoor plant.
HOW TO GROW YOUR HOUSE PLANTS: As mentioned indoor plants are generally chosen to make life easy on its owners. They also, for the most part that is, have the very same maintenance requirements, so for example if you water one plant just once a week usually that can apply to all of your tenants based on your house temperature and other elements. However you should always read up on the specific care requirements of each plant to be certain that they are indeed receiving all of the needed attention.
SOIL FOR INDOOR PLANTS: A general purpose potting soil works fine for indoor plants. If you have a tendency to overwater your plants you may wish to add some additional perlite (the little while sponge balls that you see in the soil) so that it will help the water to drain through the soil more quickly. On the other hand if you are “forgetful Jones” and often miss watering times you can add peat moss to the soil mix to help it to hold WATERING YOUR INDOOR PLANTS: Most tropical plants like their soil to stay evenly moist, but not the moisture longer. wet, confirms “Get busy gardening”. This can be tricky to get just right. Many common house plants will tolerate being under INSECTS ON YOUR INDOOR watered once and a while, but overwatering is the number one PLANTS: Its a question of when, not if, your cause of death for tropical indoor plants. So, try not to allow either extreme to happen. Check your plants regularly, and only indoor plants will have a insect infeswater them if they need it. To see if a plant needs water, stick tation. It is my personal choice always that they will tolerate “No Light” conditions. So remember to be to use organic insecticides on my incertain that you place your plants strategically so that they are door plants for the obvious reason that able to catch their fair share of the available sun light as they you and your family will be exposed to may require. Additional to this, be certain again that you are not whatever you spray on those plants giving plants that cannot handle direct sunlight an overdose of and so the best choices should be light as this will be equally damaging and can lead to plant death. made. My mantra is if i have getting too little light the plant will begin to thin out and grow long to use a chemical on an indoor plant and leggy as it is desperately reaching out for sunlight. then that plant has to move out doors. So the key to battling infestations is to closely monitor your plants so that you will catch any insect out break in the early stages when it is easy to control. Then stay on top of it you may not have gotten them all. Insects have not existed so long by accident they are very tenacious. So armed with these points and always remembering to read up on information specific to your particular plant and follow the instructions and doing this you are certain to have great success with your indoor plants.
