Carl “Flashy King” Hield turned in another credible performance, winning his opening boxing match yesterday at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Boxing at SEC Hall 5

At the SEC Hall 5, the 39-year-old professional boxer pulled off a thrilling 3-1 victory in the round of 16 in the men's 60 kilogram class over Oswald Talaka from Solomon Islands.

"It was an amazing fight coming from the professional ranks to the amateurs, fighting three three-minute rounds," Hield said. "It was a good experience, just getting the first out of the bag.

"I just want to prove people wrong - age ain’t nothing but a numberand grab myself another medal on Wednesday and then go for the gold."

Hield thanked God for giving him the ability to fight at both levels and he again dedicated his performance to his deceased mother, but he admitted he's not finished with his destiny in Glasgow.

His next match will be against Jon McConnell

CAC GAMES: JUDOKA KARRA FALLS IN THE SEMI-FINALS

IT wasn’t the outcome judoka Karra Hanna anticipated at the Central American and Caribbean Games being held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Hanna, 26, lost 1-0 with one minute and 57 seconds in the semi-finals by Ippon to Brigette Carabali of Colombia in the women's +78 kilogram class.

Earlier in the day at the Judo Pavilion, Hanna prevailed with a 1-0 win over Izayana Marenco of Nicaragua by Ippon in 1:59 in the first round.

Hanna's performance came after Xavion Johnson, who lost 1-0 by Ippon in 0:41 in the first round to Ruiz Ferney of Colombia in the -73 kg repechage.

Johnson, 20, lost earlier in the day in the quarterfinals to Ulises Mendez of Mexico by Ippon in 0:43 in the first round. Hanna and Johnson will now head to Glasgow, Scotland, where they will join the rest of Team Bahamas as they compete at the Commonwealth Games.

Golf at the Los Corales Golf Course

Maddison Carroll, coming off her fourth-place finish at the recent Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships, is now sitting in a two-way tie for seventh place with Guatemala's Elzbieta Aldana in the women's golf competition. Carroll, 16, shot a 78 yesterday to go along with her previous scores of 83 and 74 on Saturday and Sunday respectively for her three-day total of 224. The fourth and final round of competition for golf will take place today.  Today, members of the swimming team are scheduled to start making their splash in the pool at the Juan Pablo Duarte Aquatic Center. The Bahamas delegation at the games is headed by chef de mission Robert Butler, assisted by Oria Wood-Knowles.

BBA All-Star Weekend: Team Orange defeats Team Blue 4-3 in thrilling 8U championship

TEAM Orange completed an impressive run through the Bahamas Baseball Association’s second annual All-Star Weekend, defeating Team Blue 4-3 in a thrilling 8U championship game Sunday at the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium.

After splitting the opening two All-Star games, Team Orange entered the deciding championship contest with the series tied at one game apiece.

Team Orange opened the weekend with a 13-9 victory on Saturday before Team Blue answered with a 5-4 win in Sunday’s first game, setting up a winner takes all finale that lived up to expectations.

Team Blue struck first in the opening inning when Andrew Wong lifted a sacrifice fly to score the game’s first run.

weekend for Team Orange, which finished the All-Star series with a 2-1 record after winning Saturday’s opener, falling in Sunday’s first game and responding with a late rally in the decisive championship contest. The 8U title highlighted another successful Bahamas Baseball Association All Star Weekend, which brought together many of the country’s top young players for three days of competition at the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium. The weekend opened Friday with registration, team and individual photos, media interviews and skills challenges before players in the 8U, 10U and 12U divisions competed in a series of All Star games over Saturday and Sunday. Championship Sunday concluded the event with title games in all three age groups, as Team Orange claimed the 8U and 12U championships while Team Blue captured the 10U crown. The annual showcase continues to provide the nation’s rising baseball players with an opportunity to compete against the best talent in their respective age groups while celebrating the continued growth of youth baseball in The Bahamas.
