Buddy Hield’s 4th summer camp rocks Grand Bahama By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net uddy Hield is back in Grand Bahama to host the fourth edition of his Summer Basketball Camp. The third-year Sacramento Kings guard is hosting the three-day event simultaneously in Freeport and Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama. The camp began yesterday with the opening session for 8-12 year-olds while today will feature teenagers 13 years and older 9am to 12pm at Jack Hayward Gymnasium. Each morning session will be followed daily by an afternoon session 4pm to 7pm daily at the Pinedale Park in Eight Mile Rock. “It’s a blessing. As I plan the offseason I always plan to put this in my camp schedule. It’s always important to be back home and to give back to the kids and the community. I know what it’s like growing up here so being a role model for these kids, giving them a chance to learn something important, something they can take advantage, it’s a priority for me,” Hield said. “I thank God every day for blessing me, being able to use my platform to show these kids what it takes to get to the next level. Hopefully, I can inspire a few to be the next ambassador of the Bahamas whether it’s in basketball or some other field.” During the limited time with the camp participants, Hield stresses the importance of skill development to accompany the natural athleticism of many Bahamian athletes.

“We are putting them through the basics, ballhandling, passing because it’s more skill work we need to work on. We’re already athletic but we need to work on skill the most. Your skill work goes further than anything. “I feel like everybody who works out kids at home, the main thing we need to focus on is not just how tall or athletic they are but to work on their skills. If you have skills, if you can pass the ball, shoot the ball, dribble I think you can do whatever you want to do in basketball and we have to get kids to play the right way. We have guys that can play athletically with the best, but it’s the skills that set us back,” Hield said. While the skills development is key for student-athletes in their respective age groups, the community atmosphere at Pinedale Park continues to be a segment of the camp Hield places a special emphasis on. “Eight Mile Rock camp is home for me, it’s where I grew up and it’s always fun to go back there. It’s like a different type of air down there. It’s good vibes, people there are always cool and I’m always excited to get back there,” he said. “There’s where I really started on this path, on the park, grinding in the hot sun...that was the life and I really appreciate my upbringing. Just trying to inspire these kids because if I can make it they can make it too, they just have to put God first, believe in themselves and anything is possible.” Luke Barnwell, coach at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas, makes another visit to the

give them some stuff that they can work on,” Barnwell said. “There’s enough ability here, we just need to create an environment where they can take some basic things and get better at those. I’ll see a kid one year and when I come back he’s better than the year before, that’s really what you want to see. The things that we can do with them

these three days hopefully they carry on for the next 51 weeks, we see them the next year and they’re better.” Members of Hield’s personal training staff, including Trey Slate, also made the trip to Grand Bahama. “It’s great to see Buddy come and give back to the community. It’s something he always talked about when we were at OU together so it’s cool to see that happening and you don’t find that in a lot of people. “A lot of these kids have spent time working and getting better and it means they have enjoyed the camp and they want to get better,” he said. “We want to show them the process. A lot of the things they are doing is what Buddy does especially in the ball-handling and shooting round so it gives them some insight into the hard work because it was never easy for Buddy. He spent a lot of time getting better working behind the scenes.”

‘Kino’ Burrows lends a hand to help develop youth basketball in Eleuthera By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net PROFESSIONAL basketball player and national team standout Jaraun “Kino” Burrows once again teamed up with Project Cay Camp and the Haynes Library to help youth basketball development in Eleuthera. Burrows, a descendant of Cupid’s Cay, Governor’s Harbour, said he was eager to embrace the opportunity to give back to the community. He led the basketball portion of Project Cay, taking the participants through drills on the fundamentals of the game. “I still have family from Governor’s Harbour on my father’s side, my aunt still lives here, I have cousins everywhere here. I always wanted to come

back and give to this area and really the entire area of Eleuthera,” he said. “I feel like this is a wonderful opportunity to come and spend time with the kids, I know exactly the situation they’re in growing up here on the cay. It’s just wonderful for me to inspire and give back to the young kids before I head back to France to prepare for next season.” Project Cay partners with the Haynes Library to bring a love for sports, art, and reading to the children of Governor’s Harbour. The camp is a one-week segment of the Haynes Library summer programme created by Daisy Crone who walked the entire length of Eleuthera in 2016 to raise funds for the camp. They know my family, they know me, so

being home is unbelievable and it’s always an enjoyable experience,” Burrows said. “I see a lot of opportunity for the island of Eleuthera. There are so many kids, not just here but in every settlement.

Basketball is a global sport and so many opportunities can evolve. In the camps and clinics you are going to have some that will go on to play high school or even college ball, but a lot of the other ones who will not they have great benefits too – they get the discipline, structure, the team bonding that they wouldn’t normally get in certain environments because a lot of these kids came from tough backgrounds. I could never repay the game for what it gave me, but what I can do is give these kids all I have.” Burrows will continue his career in the LNB French Pro A League for the upcoming season. He reached an agreement on a contract extension with his Fos-Sue-Mur Provence Basketball Byers earlier this month.

CAC GAMES: BAHAMAS 9TH IN THE STANDINGS WITH SIX MEDALS By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net SWIMMERS and sailors continued the competition for Team Bahamas yesterday at the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia. In the pool, Izaak Bastian finished seventh in the A Final of the 200m Breaststroke in 2:18.12 seconds. Mexico took the top two spots on the podium with Miguel De Lara Ojeda in 2:11.77 and Luna Castillo in 2:12.31. Carlos Claverie of Venezuela was third in 2:12.79. Bastian finished second in heat two in 2:19.46 to advance as the sixth fastest qualifier. He also returned to compete in the 50m Free and finished eighth in heat four in 24.09. He finished 31st overall in the field. N’Nyhn Fernander finished fifth in heat three in 23.95 for 29th overall. In the women’s 50m Free, Lilly Higgs finished sixth in heat three in 27.31 and did not advance. She finished 21st overall. The four-member sailing team also continued to progress through their preliminary races. In the Snipe Open Opening Series, James Lowe and Michael McSweeney finished in ninth place in race eight. Paul de Souza finished sixth in the Open Sunfish Opening series race nine. The Bahamas Olympic Committee fielded its largest team, comprising of 60 athletes - 21 coaches and three team officials in a contingent of 84 from nine disciplines. Team Bahamas will be represented in men’s basketball, men’s softball, track and field, swimming, sailing, tennis, judo, fencing and boxing at the games which conclude on August 3. Team Bahamas is currently No.9 in the standings with a total of six medals – three gold, two silvers and one bronze.

JONES: COWBOYS CAN’T STAY IN LOCKER ROOM FOR ANTHEM OXNARD, California (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doubled down yesterday on insisting that his players stand for the national anthem, declaring that he wouldn’t support anyone who chose to stay in the locker room. Speaking at his annual news conference to open training camp in California, the outspoken billionaire became the first owner to say publicly that his players would not be allowed to stay off the field during the anthem. “No,” Jones said when asked if he would support players staying in the locker room. “Our policy is that you stand at the anthem, toe on the line.”

SHOOTING FOR A HIGHER EDUCATION THE Kevin Johnson Basketball Summer Camp is paving a path to higher education for young Bahamians by teaching them about life, the rewards of a good education, and sometimes even helping them to score a college scholarship, all while improving their skills at the game. Among the camp’s top performers this year is Vandia Williams, who topped off a list of summer camp awards with the news of a college scholarship. Winner of the Overall Team Champion Award, the FreeThrow Champion Award, and the Most-Improved Player Award, the biggest win for Vandia was her scholarship to Hartwick College. “I just turned 18, I just graduated from St Andrews, and I’m going off in August to continue playing for Hartwick College in New York, so this just feels amazing,” she said. “I started playing basketball in grade 9 and it was a sport that I loved so I wanted to find a place where I could grow in it. This is my fourth year at the Kevin Johnson Basketball Camp, and I’ve flourished into a totally different basketball player from when I first started. I only knew how to shoot free-throws. Now I can do everything on the court, from dribbling to shooting.

Coach Kevin and Coach Mark Hanna helped me along the way, and I’m thankful because now it’s given me this opportunity to study abroad.” The three-week camp closed out their training season with a celebratory awards ceremony to honour its players’ excellence on and off the court. Camp organisers were joined by representatives from sponsor CIBC FirstCaribbean, who lent a hand in presenting players with awards at the closing ceremony. CIBC FirstCaribbean has been a regular sponsor over the last decade. Marketing manager Nikia Christie said the bank “wanted to do more than just hand over a cheque, so helping to give out the awards was a great way to be more involved in this programme that we admire. “Interacting with all of these kids who love basketball and who are encouraged to pursue education through their passion has been a great experience. Feeling the excitement in the room and knowing we had a hand in creating that energy and buzz among these children is priceless.” Coach and founder Kevin Johnson said the camp is all about helping young Bahamians find a way to achieve higher education. “We got started about 23 years ago.

Rested Angel McCoughtry, Dream on a roll at All-Star break By BRINLEY HINEMAN Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Angel McCoughtry says she is in a better place. And with her back in the Atlanta lineup after taking a year off from the WNBA, so are the Dream. The 6-foot-1, 31-year is playing for a new coach and with a host of new teammates. Together, they are the hottest team in the league, winning a franchise-best eight straight games to move up to second place in the league standings heading into this weekend’s All-Star break. She returned to the league more mature than before, saying she has “good head space.” McCoughtry was playing in Russia during the

WNBA offseason and arrived late to the Dream’s training camp because of overseas schedule conflicts, and put in the work to make up for the lost time. “On the court, I want to be a great leader and a great teammate,” said McCoughtry, who is Atlanta’s second leading scorer at 16.5 points per game. McCoughtry will make her fifth All-Star appearance during the festivities this weekend in Minnesota. In Russia, McCoughtry played for the Dynamo Kursk and said she used the time off as a “reset.” She opened an ice cream shop in downtown Atlanta in January 2017 as a way to give jobs to the community. Her signature dish is sweet potato waffle sundaes with butter pecan ice cream.

12-22 last year and missed the playoffs. “The presence she brings on and off the court, it’s needed,” Dream guard Brittney Sykes said. “She felt missed.” First-year Dream coach Nicki Collen agrees. “There’s a confidence about her that I think they all feel,” Collen said of McCoughtry. Collen, a former women’s basketball assistant coach at Louisville, recruited McCoughtry for the Cardinals. McCoughtry set the career scoring record for Louisville women’s basketball player during her senior year before being drafted by the Dream. McCoughtry, who is also averaging six rebounds and three assists for Atlanta, has had impact wherever she has played, including in Turkey, Slovakia,

Lebanon and Hungary. Bringing McCoughtry back to the Dream took some convincing, Collen said. Her return has solidified her as one of the Dream’s “staples,” Sykes said. Sykes, a rookie last season, said the team needs veteran players like McCoughtry on the team. It is working — Atlanta is 16-9 this season, just 2.5 games behind first-place Seattle in the standings. New York Liberty center Tina Charles, an Olympic teammate of McCoughtry, said she McCoughtry is a differencemaker on the court. “She’s one of the best all-around players that we have in this league or that this league has seen thus far,” Charles said. “It’s effortless for her. She makes things look easy.”

WHILE the focus will be on the men, the Men’s Department of the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention is inviting the general public to come out and participate in their first annual Family Fun Run/ Walk Race and Health Fair. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 25 and is scheduled to begin at 6am from Charles W Saunders High School on Jean Street. Immediately following the completion of the event, a souse-out will be held on the school grounds. Rev Stephen Ferguson, the new president of the Men’s Fellowship, said they are looking forward to a wonderful fellowship time in a wholesome atmosphere. “The event is being held to get families more involved in healthy activities,” he said. “We hope to get persons more involved in excising and to be more health conscious.” Although the aim is to bring men from all walks of life together to walk, Ferguson said they want to encourage wives and children, as well as single individuals, to come out and participate. Categories include 15-and-under, 19-andunder, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-and-over for male and female. There will also be a special division for pastors and ministers in both the run and walk. 2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS OPEN IN TWO YEARS By JIM ARMSTRONG AP Sports Writer TOKYO (AP) — The 2020 Olympics will open in two years, and the heat is on. Since being awarded the games, which will be the largest ever with 33 sports and 339 events, Tokyo organisers have had to deal with a series of problems ranging from stadium and construction delays, natural disasters and a scandal involving the official logo. Most of the obstacles have been cleared up, but a deadly heatwave gripping Japan has focused organisers on ways to keep fans and athletes cool when the Olympics begin on July 24, 2020. Potential for scorching summer conditions has always concerned organisers, with temperatures in central Tokyo often exceeding 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) in July and August, made more difficult because of high humidity. This summer heatwave has resulted in more than 65 deaths and sent tens of thousands to hospitals. The temperature on Monday reached 41.1 Celsius (106 Fahrenheit), the highest ever recorded in Japan. Experts have warned the risk of heatstroke in Tokyo has escalated in recent years, while noting the Olympics are expected to take place in conditions

when sports activities should normally be halted. “We are mindful that we do have to prepare for extreme heat,” John Coates, head of the IOC’s coordination commission for the Tokyo Games, told a recent news conference. The 1964 Games in Tokyo were held in October to avoid the harshest of the heat. That was before the Olympics schedule was influenced by rights-paying broadcasters and sponsors. Local organisers are doing what they can to help athletes combat the conditions. The marathon and some other outside events will be held early in the morning to avoid extreme heat. The federal and the Tokyo metropolitan governments are also planning to lay pavements that emit less surface heat and plant taller roadside trees for shade. “The spectators as well as the athletes have to be taken care of,” Coates said. “The timing of the marathon and road walks will be as early as possible as they have been in previous games to beat the heat.” Organisers want the games to help showcase Japan’s recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that took more than 18,000 lives and triggered meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. While reconstruction from the disaster is making

steady progress, and work on the new 68,000-seat main stadium in Tokyo is 40 per cent complete, more than 70,000 people remain displaced from their communities. The construction of the main stadium was more than a year behind schedule when it started in December 2016, as earlier plans were scrapped because of spiraling costs and a contentious design. The Japanese government approved the new 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion) stadium, which is expected to be completed in November of 2019. The previous construction timeline would have allowed the main stadium to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup final on November 2 as a test event, but that idea was scrapped. Meanwhile, organisers say the other newly-constructed venues are 20 to 40 per cent complete. The torch relay will start March 26, 2020, in Fukushima, an area hit hard by the disaster. Coates said local organisers are on track with 24 months to go. “Tokyo 2020 comes a significant step closer to delivering an Olympic Games that will bring Japan and the world together,” he said. “The organising committee has presented considerable progress ... especially as it related to venue and operational readiness.”

Marte, Polanco, Bell HR, Bucs beat Indians for 11th straight CLEVELAND (AP) — Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco and Josh Bell each hit a two-run homer, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cleveland Indians 9-4 on Tuesday night for their 11th straight win. The Pirates routed the Indians for the second straight night. Marte homered in the first inning, drove in three runs and extended his career-high hitting streak to 17 games. Polanco homered and Corey Dickerson tripled in two runs when Pittsburgh scored five times in the second. Bell hit a home run in the fifth. The Pirates have homered in a seasonhigh nine straight games, hitting 22 home runs in that span. Pittsburgh has won 11 in a row for the first time since Sept. 12-22, 1996. The Pirates have won 13 of 14 and are 17-8 since June 24. Pittsburgh has outscored its opponents 43-8 in the last five games. FROOME CRACKS IN THE PYRENEES AS THOMAS SOLIDIFIES TOUR LEAD By ANDREW DAMPF AP Sports Writer SAINT-LARY-SOULAN, France (AP) — His tongue dangling from his mouth, his pedal stroke strained, Chris Froome’s hopes of a record-tying fifth Tour de France title slowly drifted away. Up amid the thin and misty air of the Col du Portet — rated the second toughest climb in Tour history — Froome cracked on the feared 17th stage through the Pyrenees yesterday, solidifying Sky teammate Geraint Thomas’s hold on the yellow jersey. “Froomey said on the radio @ maybe 5K or 4K to go that he wasn’t feeling super,” Thomas said after increasing his lead to nearly two minutes over Tom Dumoulin. “That gave me confidence because I knew if Froomey suffered, everyone suffered. “I didn’t want him to have a bad day like he did but it just gave me confidence knowing someone of Froomey’s stature was struggling, and I just knew I would be able to respond to the attacks.” Froome finished eighth, 1 minute, 35 seconds behind stage winner Nairo Quintana, and dropped from second to third overall, a distant 2:31 seconds adrift of Thomas. The British rider’s day then went from bad to worse as he crashed when police mistook him for a fan on the way down the

mountain, with his bodyguard also on a bike. Froome had put a black raincoat over his racing uniform to keep warm and when police ordered him to stop, he lost control. Team Sky said the rider was not injured in the incident, which came a day after police used tear gas to disperse a farmers’ protest that had blocked the road with bales of hay. Froome was among a large group of riders whose eyes needed treatment due to the tear gas. He has been a repeated target of fans after he was cleared of doping five days before the race began. The four-time champion had been racing under the cloud of a potential ban for using twice the permitted level of salbutamol during his victory at the Spanish Vuelta in September. Froome said he has been repeatedly spat at since the race started, and that spectators have punched him and tried to make him fall off his bike. He is attempting to match the Tour record of five victories shared by Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain, but appeared to concede defeat. “We’ve just got to look after (Thomas) now,” Froome said. “I’ve won the last three Grand Tours and G has ridden an absolutely faultless race this year, so he fully deserves to be in the yellow jersey, and fingers

The stage was a strong signal that Froome has reached his limit after

winning the Tour and Vuelta last year, and the Giro d’Italia in May. “What you’ve got with Chris is he’ll empty the tank,” Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford said. “He deserves a lot of credit having gone to the Giro ... Colombian rider Quintana, a three-time podium finisher in the Tour, finished 28 seconds ahead of Irish rider Dan Martin, while Thomas crossed third in the stage, 47 seconds back. Dumoulin moved up to second, 1:59 behind Thomas, the Welsh rider who is seeking his first Grand Tour victory. “Thomas has been the strongest, and that’s the situation now,” Dumoulin said. “For me, so far, it has not been possible to gain time on him.” Froome was first put in difficulty when fourthplaced Primoz Roglic attacked with 2.5 kilometres to go, and then was dropped for good when Dumoulin accelerated at the 2K banner. While Thomas followed Dumoulin, Froome quickly lost ground and had to be

escorted up the rest of the way by Colombian teammate Egan Bernal, who kept turning around to check on his team leader. It was Quintana’s second stage victory in the Tour, having also won a leg in 2013. He moved up from eighth to fifth overall, 3:30 behind. A Formula One-like grid start introduced to the Tour for the first time had little impact on the race as Thomas and Froome waited for their Sky teammates to join them. The 65-kilometre (40-mile) route from Bagneres-de-Luchon featured three gruelling climbs and hardly a stretch of flat road. The unprecedented finish on the Col du Portet above Saint-Lary-Soulan at an altitude of 2,215 metres (7,267 feet) marked the highest point of this year’s race. Measuring 16 kilometres at an average gradient of nearly nine per cent, organisers rated the Col du Portet as the second hardest climb in Tour history after Mont Ventoux. Peter Sagan, the threetime defending world champion and threetime stage winner in this year’s race, crashed on the descent from the Col de Val Louron, the second mountain of the day. Familiar place: Bengals open camp with Burfict suspended By JOE KAY AP Sports Writer CINCINNATI (AP) — While the Bengals defense settles in to learn a new system during training camp, linebacker Vontaze Burfict is just passing through town. He’ll miss the start of the season for a third year in a row, this time on a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancers. It’s a conundrum for the Bengals, who have remained loyal to Burfict despite his history of misconduct and suspensions. His absence will be especially noteworthy this year as the Bengals adjust to a new defence under firstyear coordinator Teryl Austin. When camp opens with the first practice today,

they’ll be teaching him the system while also preparing everyone else to play without him for the first month. “Unfortunately, we’re probably too experienced at it,” coach Marvin Lewis said. The results so far haven’t been all that encouraging. Burfict was suspended for the first three games in 2016 because of his history of egregious hits during games, including his blow to Antonio Brown’s head during the Steelers’ first-round playoff victory the previous season. The Bengals lost two of three and finished with a losing record. Last year, Burfict got another three-game suspension from the league for his egregious hit on Kansas City’s Anthony Sherman during a preseason game.

Undeterred, the Bengals gave Burfict a three-year contract extension and got off to an 0-3 start and another losing season. Burfict is one of the most vocal leaders on the defene. He’ll practice with the team until the preseason ends and his suspension begins, preventing him from being around the team for a month. “We’re going to miss the heck out of Vontaze,” cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick said yesterday. Coaches liken it to missing an injured player, though it’s not an exact comparison. When a player gets hurt, someone else steps into the job full time. He has a history of getting back to speed quickly after returning from a suspension. “One thing to his credit: He’s been able to come back to playing as though he’s been playing football,” Lewis said. “If we say he’s going to play 20 snaps, he plays 40. If we say 30 snaps, he plays 50. He won’t come out once he’s in there, and then all he’ll do afterward is tell you guys how he’s winded and we made him play too much. But he’s the one who won’t come off the field.”

FFA: Usain Bolt is ‘not a professional footballer SYDNEY (AP) — Football Federation Australia has responded cautiously to reports Usain Bolt hopes to play for the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League. Reports last week said the 31-year-old Bolt, an eight-time Olympic sprint gold medallist, has agreed to trial with the Mariners next month and may receive a one-season A-League contract if he impresses. However, in order to make a deal possible the FFA would have to top up any salary offered to Bolt from its $3 million fund to attract “marquee” players. The Mariners owner reportedly has offered to meet 70 per cent of Bolt’s salary but the FFA’s contribution might still be around $900,000. In a statement, the FFA said, “While Usain Bolt is one of the most famous athletes on the planet, he’s not a professional footballer. “If the trial goes ahead and Central Coast Mariners decided it stacks

Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp said he hoped to have details of any trial finalised by late August. “It is crucial to note that all discussions between the Central Coast Mariners and Bolt require an initial six-week trial period and no contract is guaranteed,” a club statement said.

Bolt’s long-time agent, Ricky Sims, confirmed the Jamaican athlete is considering the Mariners’ offer of a trial. “Usain has made it quite clear that he’s interested in playing professional football,” Simms told the Australian Associated Press. “We’re looking at a number of options and this is one of them.” Australian player agent Tony Rallis, who first revealed Bolt’s interest in playing in the A-League, said Bolt was genuine in his desire to play for the Mariners. “If he meets the benchmarks set by the coaches, he’ll be given a contract,” Rallis said. “He’ll be treated like another one of the players and he doesn’t want to be treated like a different player. “He’s got a point to prove and he’s determined to prove he’s worth a contract.”

MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich has agreed to sign Canada’s teenage forward Alphonso Davies from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. The Bundesliga powerhouse says the 17-year-old Ghana-born Davies, who has already made eight appearances for his country, will join on January 1, 2019 and that his contract will run through June 2023. Media reports say Bayern is paying an initial fee of 11 million euros ($13 million), with another 9 million euros to follow in possible bonus payments. Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic says, “He offers a lot of promise for the future. Alphonso already possesses great ability, which is why a lot of top clubs were keen on him.”
