A final farewell to a beloved Anglican choir director and psychoanalyst L
ast week, the Anglican community bid farewell to Fr Frederick Walter Fleischer, a great advocate for the pipe organ who left an indelible mark on the musical tradition at Christ Church Cathedral and across the Bahamas over several decades. He passed away at the Princess Margaret Hospital at 5.20am on Tuesday, July 12. He was 86 years old. Fred Fleischer was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, and was a Roman Catholic priest before converting to the Anglican faith. He was ordained in 1963. He performed duties in various places across the diocese as a supply and interim priest. Between 1977 and 1979, he was interim priest-in-charge at Holy Trinity in Nassau when the late Fr Etienne Bowleg was on sabbatical. He served as assistant priest, principal organist and Minister of Music at Christ Church Cathedral beginning in 1973, serving under the late Dean William Granger and the late Dean Foster Pestaina, ending his service there in 1993. Fr Fleischer taught high school at St Augustine's College, St John's College, St Anne's School and Government High School in the 1970s. As a musician and choir director, he made a great impact in the schools, on the musical tradition at Christ Church Cathedral and across the Bahamas in general.

He was an exceptionally gifted and perceptive musician and was responsible for finding and developing many talented and even world-class musicians. He was particularly well known for his work with choirs, especially the Men and Boys Choir at the Cathedral. Of great significance is his work with pipe organs. He was responsible for placing organs in many churches, Anglican and other denominations, and for maintaining and upgrading pipe organs. He was often consulted internationally on this subject. Again, the greatest of those instruments would be the two pipe organs at Christ Church Cathedral. According to the Anglican Diocese, “Fr Fred had a heart of gold, and then some. He was known for helping, going beyond the call and hours of duty, for giving his time and personal resources and for getting other people to help him to help others. He had a good heart and always understood the hurt and pain in people, and saw the good in people and never gave up trying to help any person.” Fr Fleischer was also a trained Jungian psychoanalyst and maintained a counselling practice in both Florida and in the Bahamas for many decades. In fact, for decades he split his time between Florida and the Bahamas, travelling back and forth on a weekly basis and maintaining clients in both places as he fulfilled his musical obligations.
Upon leaving Christ Church Cathedral, he served in Miami as an assistant priest and an organist and choir director at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, a predominantly Black congregation with many Bahamian descendants, and where the rector was Bahamian descendant, Fr Ken Major. He then served at the Episcopal Church of Santa Cruz Resurrection, an Anglo-Hispanic congregation, where he was up until a few years ago. He maintained his canonical residence in the Bahamian diocese and functioned here whenever he could. In these last years he remained a worshipper at the Cathedral. In recent years, he resided entirely in New Providence, continuing his counselling practice here and abroad via Zoom during the pandemic. He counselled clients all over the world. He is married to the former Cyprianna Bethell and the couple have one son, Trevor, a daughter-in-law, Bethany and a grandson Zach. The Anglican Diocese records its thanksgiving and appreciation for the life and witness of Fr Frederick Walter Fleischer. “We offer heartfelt condolences to his family, and we assure them of our love and prayers.” Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

ishop Dr Carl Rahming and his wife Evangeline Rahming recently celebrated their 40th pastoral anniversary with a service of thanksgiving held at the St Paul’s Baptist Church. Bishop Rahming has dedicated more than half of his life to ministry both through outreach in the Fox Hill community and in association with other churches in the Bahamas and abroad. Both Prime Minister Philip Davis and the Leader of the Opposition Michael Pintard
sent greetings in the program for the service. The prime minister noted that Bishop Rahming has contributed to the building of a better and stronger Bahamas. “Through his faithful, godly leadership, many Bahamians, young and old alike, have developed and matured into
community-minded who like he and his wife, have a passion to see the Bahamas progress and succeed at all levels,” said Mr Davis. Michael Pintard, FNM leader, called Bishop Rahming a beacon of light in the community. “We know that the local church remains the hope of the Bahamas and you have consistently been there providing hope in some of the darkest moments in your community,” he said. Fox Hill MP Fred Mitchell also expressed congratulations, stating that Bishop Rahming’s life exemplifies a man’s perseverance and strength in serving God and his country, producing a fitting legacy that has withstood the test of time.

ELEVATOR PROJECT IN OLD JERUSALEM LEADS TO SURPRISING FINDS By ILAN BEN ZION Associated Press JERUSALEM (AP) — Installing an elevator doesn't normally involve a 2,000-year plunge into an ancient city's history. But in Jerusalem, even seemingly simple construction projects can lead to archaeological endeavors. Archaeologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem say they have made numerous discoveries, including an ornate first-century villa with its own ritual bath, after a project began to increase access for disabled people to Jerusalem's Western Wall. The villa, located footsteps from where the biblical Jewish Temples stood, was uncovered during several years of salvage excavations in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's historic Old City. Archaeologists perform
salvage excavations to make a scientific study of ancient artifacts and buildings before they are removed to make way for modern construction. Jerusalem's Western Wall is the holiest site where Jews can pray and millions of worshipers and tourists visit it each year. But to get to the site from the adjacent Jewish Quarter, visitors typically have to descend 142 steps, or take a long detour around the city walls to one of the nearby gates. In 2017, the Jewish Quarter Reconstruction and Development Company got the green light to begin construction of two elevators to let visitors make the 26-metre (85-foot) descent with greater ease. The location was a narrow sliver of largely undeveloped slope abutting the existing staircase on the eastern edge of the Jewish Quarter.
“The Western Wall is not a privilege, it's elemental for a Jew or for any person from around the world who wants to come to this holy place,” said Herzl Ben Ari, CEO of the development group. “We have to enable it for everybody.” However, like modern development projects in other ancient cities, such as Istanbul, Rome, Athens and Thessaloniki, archaeological finds slowed progress to a crawl. “This plot of land where the elevator is going to be built remained undisturbed, giving us the great opportunity of digging through all the strata, all the layers of ancient Jerusalem,” said Michal Haber, an archaeologist from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Five years into the undertaking, the archaeological work is nearing completion, but the

During their dig, the archaeologists carefully peeled back successive layers of construction and debris that had accumulated over two millennia, over 9 meters (30 feet) in total. Historical waypoints included Ottoman pipes built into a 2,000-year-old aqueduct that supplied Jerusalem with water from springs near Bethlehem; early Islamic oil lamps; bricks stamped with
the name of the 10th Legion, the Roman army that besieged, destroyed and was afterwards encamped in Jerusalem two millennia ago; and the remains of the Judean villa from the final days before the ancient Jewish Temple’s destruction in the year 70. Archaeologist Oren Gutfeld said they were surprised to uncover traces from Jerusalem’s reconstruction as the Roman city of Aelia Capitolina in the second century.

Optical illusions – Snakes in the grass L
et’s see. We started this series on optical illusions in an attempt to get all of us to see life a different way. We’ve done articles on perspective before, so how are these ones any different? Well, teachings on perspective give us the idea that something could look different, depending on your viewpoint. This ‘Optical Illusion’ series acknowledges things...people for exactly what they are. Our difference is that once we acknowledge it, we find ways to positively approach the revelation in a way that does us no harm. You see, all revelation comes at a cost. Once we see someone for who they really are, understand a situation for what it really is, or even understand our part in creating a scenario, we can be a bit jaded, hurt, hindered or even stopped. This series gives us the tools to guard our hearts and protect ourselves by seeing the worth beyond the revelation. Take a look at this picture accompanying this article. At first glance it could simply be a clump of grass, but look closer. How many of us spotted the hooded cobra right away? Often times we tend to group people in our lives in the same

way. They all look alike, they all act alike, they all seem, you know, alike. But then the dreaded day comes when we realise perhaps we were wrong to assume they were one thing when, in reality, they were something else entirely. This article is not about recognising who the snakes are in your life as much as it is about using the revelation to your advantage. You see, snakes – vile, poisonous creatures that they are – do serve a purpose. As long as we respect their purpose and remove ourselves from harm’s way, we’ll be fine. First, we must ask ourselves, “What
are snakes good for?” The two main proponents are Snakes are nature’s best pest control. Snake venom is used in medicine. What? Snakes are actually good for something? Yeah, they are! Now how do we coincide this optical illusion with our reality? You don’t have to go looking for snakes – they could be a friend, family member, coworker or superior. The thing is some snakes you can get rid of and some you can only avoid. So, we want to categorise here. If ridding yourself of a “snake” connection brings
you to the place of peace, don’t be changed or corrupted by it; simply, get rid of it! If you can’t, then we want to be aware but not acclimated to the snakes in our environment. Even the Bible tells us to be wise as the snake but remain harmless. I’d like to add to that “...remain unharmed...” How do we? Like I said before, we recognise the good that can come from using a snake. Snakes can make us more attuned and focused on what really matters in our lives. A snake can be used to empower and motivate us. I have one person in my life who has consistently tried to keep me isolated, and unpopular. If I
Excavation of graves begins at site of one of the oldest Black churches in America By BEN FINLEY Associated Press ARCHAEOLOGISTS in Virginia began excavating three suspected graves at the original site of one of the nation’s oldest Black churches on Monday, commencing a months-long effort to learn who was buried there and how they lived. The First Baptist Church was formed in 1776 by free and enslaved Black people in Williamsburg, the colonial capital of Virginia. Members initially met secretly in fields and under trees in defiance of laws that
prevented African Americans from congregating. A total of 41 apparent burial plots have been identified. Most are 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 metres) long and up to 2 feet (0.61 metres) wide. The soil is discoloured in places where holes were likely dug and filled back in. Only one grave appears to be marked, with an upside-down empty wine bottle. Before excavations began Monday, a private blessing was held. “It was important for us to have that ceremony — to bless the ancestors,” said Connie Matthews Harshaw, a church
member and board president of a foundation that preserves First Baptist’s history. “Because we don’t know their names. Their names are known only to God.” First Baptist’s original church was destroyed by a tornado in 1834. The second structure, built in 1856, stood there for a century. That building was bought in 1956 and razed to build a parking lot for Colonial Williamsburg, a living history museum that was expanding at the time and that now has more than 400 structures. For decades, the museum failed to tell the stories of colonial Black Americans — many
of them enslaved — who made up more than half of the 2,000 people in Virginia’s 18th century capital. But in recent years it has made an effort to tell a more complete story, placing a growing emphasis on AfricanAmerican history. When the church’s original structure was uncovered last year, First Baptist Pastor Reginald F Davis said it was “a rediscovery of the humanity of a people.” “This helps to erase the historical and social amnesia that has afflicted this country for so many years,” he said.

How has it helped? It has kept me grounded and focused; persistently following my goals and shaping “me.” What I have realised is that when we use our snakes to keep us away from distractions, we turn the potential negative into something empowering, pushing us, and giving us the impetus to go further, and do more. I can’t get rid of my snake. I simply remain harmless; learning wisdom through watching their manipulations. It can be the same for you. Just as snakes exist in nature and are God’s creation, people will be who they are. Once they reveal themselves, wisely plan: 1. Avoid the poison 2. Learn what you need in order to get where you have to go. Even if it’s just how not to be like they are. God bless you this week! If human remains are found in the plots that are being targeted, DNA tests and analyses of bones will be conducted, said Jack Gary, Colonial Williamsburg’s director of archaeology. DNA analysis should be able to determine the person’s eye color and skin tone as well as propensity for certain diseases and genomic ancestry. Analysis of bones can show a person’s age when he or she died as well as their quality of life and the physical stresses they endured, Gary said. The remains will be taken to the Institute for Historical Biology on the campus of William & Mary, a university in Williamsburg, for cleaning and bone analysis. The University of Connecticut will conduct the DNA testing.

What the Bible actually says about abortion may surprise you By MELANIE A HOWARD Fresno Pacific University (THE CONVERSATION) In the days since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, which had established the constitutional right to an abortion, some Christians have cited the Bible to argue why this decision should either be celebrated or lamented. But here’s the problem: This 2,000-year-old text says nothing about abortion. As a university professor of biblical studies, I am familiar with faith-based arguments Christians use to back up views of abortion, whether for or against. Many people seem to assume the Bible discusses the topic head-on, which is not the case.
carrying heavy loads as ways to end a pregnancy. Soranus’ treatise on gynaecology acknowledged different schools of thought on the topic. Some medical practitioners forbade the use of any abortive methods. Others permitted them, but not in cases in which they were intended to cover up an adulterous liaison or simply to preserve the mother’s good looks. In other words, the Bible was written in a world in which abortion was practiced and viewed with nuance. Yet the Hebrew and Greek equivalents of the word “abortion” do not appear in either the Old or New Testament of the Bible. That is, the topic simply is not directly mentioned.
Ancient context Abortions were known and practiced in biblical times, although the methods differed significantly from modern ones. The second-century Greek physician Soranus, for example, recommended fasting, bloodletting, vigorous jumping and
What the Bible says The absence of an explicit reference to abortion, however, has not stopped its opponents or proponents from looking to the Bible for support of their positions. Abortion opponents turn to several biblical texts that, taken
together, seem to suggest that human life has value before birth. For example, the Bible opens by describing the creation of humans “in the image of God”: a way to explain the value of human life, presumably even before people are born. Likewise, the Bible describes several important figures, including the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah and the Christian Apostle Paul, as having being called to their sacred tasks since their time in the womb. Psalm 139 asserts that God “knit me together in my mother’s womb.” However, abortion opponents are not the only ones who can appeal to the Bible for support. Supporters can point to other biblical texts that would seem to count as evidence in their favor. Exodus 21, for example, suggests that a pregnant woman’s life is more valuable than the foetus’s. This text describes a scenario in which men who are fighting strike a pregnant woman and cause her to miscarry. A monetary fine is imposed if the woman suffers no other harm beyond the
miscarriage. However, if the woman suffers additional harm, the perpetrator’s punishment is to suffer reciprocal harm, up to life for life. There are other biblical texts that seem to celebrate the choices that women make for their bodies, even in contexts in which such choices would have been socially shunned. The fifth chapter of the Gospel of Mark, for example, describes a woman with a gynecological ailment that has made her bleed continuously taking a great risk: She reaches out to touch Jesus’ cloak in hopes that it will heal her, even though the touch of a menstruating woman was believed to cause ritual contamination. However, Jesus commends her choice and praises her faith. Similarly, in the Gospel of John, Jesus’ follower Mary seemingly wastes resources by pouring an entire container of costly ointment on his feet and using her own hair to wipe them – but he defends her decision to break the social taboo around touching an unrelated man so intimately.
Beyond the Bible In the response to the US Supreme Court’s decision, Christians on both sides of the partisan divide have appealed to any number of texts to assert that their particular brand of politics is biblically backed. However, if they claim the Bible specifically condemns or approves of abortion, they are skewing the textual evidence to fit their position. Of course, Christians can develop their own faith-based arguments about modern political issues, whether or not the Bible speaks directly to them. roviding hope for young Bahamians in these challenging times is the goal of the annual conference hosted by the Emerge Youth Church.
Under the theme “Limitless”, the “Youth Alive 2022” event started yesterday with day sessions. The conference continues through to tomorrow and will conclude with a concert at 7pm at the Myles E Munroe Diplomat Centre, Carmichael Road. Dr E Corey Rolle, also known by his stage name DJ Counsellor, is the host of the conference. The Emerge Youth Church is the youth arm of Bahamas Faith Ministries International. The “Youth Alive” conference has been around
for over 20 years and was founded by BFM’s senior pastor, Dave Burrows. Speakers and performers at the event this week include international guests V Rose, Caleb Gordon and Flame. Bahamian performers include Stacs, Chosen Soldiers, Mr Blaxx, V Mac, Stermon Rolle, Davian, and DJ Counsellor himself. “It’s an honour to be a part of a team who are dedicated to impacting lives for the kingdom of god. Last year, ‘Youth Alive’ was hosted in Nassau, Freeport and Abaco. The inspiration (for the event) comes from watching
so many lives impacted yearly, youth giving their hearts to Christ, seeds being planted, and creatives having the opportunity to use their gifts for the kingdom of god. The highlight of it all will be the preached word, worship, and the music,” said Mr Rolle. He believes it’s important to host the event every year, as this generation of youngsters desperately needs hope. “They need to see and connect with real people, men and women who are dedicated to serve this generation with the Gospel. This is a platform used to bring the Gospel to a generation, through teaching, music, film and discipleship.
