E have all heard the popular saying “What God has for you, is for you” at least one time in our life. One can even quote the popular scripture Jeremiah 29:11 that reads: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Tribune Religion spoke to several Christian readers who shared their thoughts on the word. “Timing is sometimes long and hard to wait for when you
want something done. That is why I have learned a long time ago to not put a time limit on expectations of this life,” said Tasha Nicholls. “You have to live your life trusting God’s timing, not yours. And you only realise how important it was to wait only after you have already gotten what you had hoped for. The waiting period is hard, I tell you, but it is well worth it. Your book has already been written in God’s eyes.” Jessica Campbell said: “ The set-up God has for your future is far better than anything you have lost in the past. It’s only the Devil that will make you think or believe you are less than, or to settle for the less, but like I

Learn and let go of things that hurt you because He obviously has
something better in store. Trust me, I have been there, and only at the point when I was out of the dark place, I saw what God was trying to do. I have never been so happy to let go,” said Stasia. Victoria Osteen, and American author and the co-pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, tweeted on the subject: “Today, no matter what you are facing, know that God is greater than all of it. He has the answer and is working for your good behind the scenes. Thank God in advance, water those seeds of faith, and take hold of every promise He has for you.”

On Greece’s island of Santorini, 13 cloistered nuns pray for the world By GIOVANNA DELL’ORTO Associated Press THIRA, Greece (AP) — Cruise-ship tourists crowding souvenir shops and couples chasing the perfect Instagram sunset throng the alleyway outside the Monastery of St Catherine, steps from Santorini’s world-famous volcanic cliffs. Inside this convent on one of the trendiest islands in Greece, a predominantly Christian Orthodox country, 13 cloistered Catholic nuns devote their lives to praying for those visitors and for the world. It’s a crucial if often misunderstood mission within the church, where constant prayer is deemed necessary to support more outwardly engaged ministries. “In such a touristy island, the last thing one thinks about is praying — so we are the ones who do it,” Sister Lucía María de Fátima, the prioress, said on a recent morning. She and other sisters spoke in the convent’s parlour, from behind a widely spaced white iron grille that demarcates the cloistered space from the outside world. Ending more than two years of pandemic seclusion, the sisters will welcome visitors back to the public part of their church starting at a Mass in early August for the convent’s 425th anniversary. The rest of the convent is considered a sacred space, where the nuns live mostly in silence and contemplation, leaving only for medical reasons or government requirements. “After going beyond the grille, we miss nothing. When God gave us the vocation to being cloistered, he gave us the complete package,” said Sister María Esclava, who’s originally from Puerto Rico. The Rev Félix del Valle, a Spanish priest, has led periodic spiritual exercises at the convent for more than 10 years, part of the rigorous religious training for the sisters that starts with

nine years of preparation before entering the cloistered life. “In a world of consumption, of diversions, they give witness that God alone is enough,” he said. Many orders of nuns are active in teaching, health care and ministry to vulnerable groups like migrants. But contemplative nuns carry on a tradition of complete devotion to prayer that traces its origins to the first desert hermits, who sought closeness to God by removing all earthly distractions. “For these women, they find God in a dedicated life of prayer or contemplation,” said Margaret McGuinness, professor emerita of religion at La Salle University in Philadelphia. Sister María de la Iglesia spent nearly 40 years in Santorini before moving to Spain to lead the Federación Madre de Dios, or Mother of God Federation, which oversees the island’s convent and nine other Catholic Dominican convents on four continents. “In today’s logic our life is not understood or valued, but within the church it is,” she said.
“We’re the voice of the church that tirelessly praises, petitions on behalf of our entire humanity. It’s a thrilling mission.” When not praying or practicing music and hymns, the sisters — ranging in age from 40s to 80s — do housework; tend to the garden, where they grow tomatoes, lemons and grapes; and make communion wafers for most of the Catholic parishes in Greece. During two daily recesses, they break their silence to chat on the wide terraces, the Aegean Sea shimmering in the distance. At dawn, a bell calls to the first of about nine hours of prayer, most sung in Latin, Spanish and Greek. “While the sun rises, creation and the human person join in harmony of praise to God,” Sister María Guadalupe said, adding that with monasteries across time zones, someone is always keeping prayer active. “We’re not out of the world, but rather very involved in the world.” In majority-Orthodox Greece, the Catholic convent’s presence speaks to desired
unity with other Christians, the sisters say. They exchange holiday greetings with the island’s Orthodox monks and nuns, and recall enthusiastically one visit when they sang hymns together. “Despite being cloistered, nuns have always been an important element in the life of a place,” said Fermín Labarga, professor of church history at the University of Navarra in Spain. It was in that country that the Dominican order of cloistered nuns was founded more than 800 years ago by St Dominic, to pray constantly in what Labarga termed the “rearguard” while their fellow religious brought the Gospel to the world. That “missionary spirit within a contemplative space,” in Sister María de la Iglesia’s words, continues to animate today’s nuns, who wear the historic Dominican black veil and all-enveloping white habit — representing penitence and innocence. They came to Santorini mostly from the Caribbean (Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo), as well as Angola, Korea, Argentina, Greece and Spain.
It was first established in 1596 on the rocky promontory of Skaros — today a popular sunset-watching spot, but then a hideout from pirates. After an earthquake, it was relocated to the main town of Thira a few miles away, where it survived another devastating quake in 1956 that led many residents, including most other Catholic religious, to abandon the island. The sisters keep up to date on world events through various Catholic media outlets and newsletters, plus daily Mass homilies. In recent ones, the priest delved into the war in Ukraine, the metaverse and the dangers of parkour. They also receive prayer petitions from other religious as well as visitors, asking for everything from world peace to healing from disease — “and babies, lots of babies,” Sister Maria Flor de la Eucaristía said playfully. “We suffer too with them, we feel the pain of the families and of the world, but with a certitude of hope that gives us joy,” said Sister Maria Fátima, who hails from Angola.

he topic of tithing has sparked a new conversation in Christian circles after US megachurch pastor Dr Creflo Dollar publicly denounced all the teachings he is so far done on the subject matter. Dr Dollar, who leads World Changers International Ministries in College Park, Georgia, told his congregation in a June 26 sermon that what he has preached in the past about tithing for many years was incorrect. In a Sunday sermon billed “The Great Misunderstanding”, the founder and senior pastor of the nearly 30,000-member church said he is aware that his declaration will cause him to lose him friends and invitations to speak at other churches. However, he said he is convinced, after studying Romans 6:14, that tithing is an Old Testament concept that has been retired in the dispensation of grace in which Christians should now be living. "I want to start off by saying that I'm still growing, and the teachings that I've shared in times past on the subject of tithing were not correct," the pastor said. "And today, I stand in humility to correct some things that I've taught for years and believed for years, but could never understand it clearly because I had not yet been confronted with the Gospel of grace, which has made the difference.” His sermon then focused on proving why tithing – giving ten per cent of one’s income to church – is an Old Testament concept. He emphasised that Christians today no longer live under the Mosaic Law but the “freedom of God’s grace” as described in the New Testament of the Bible. He instructed his church to see giving money as an act of
worship, just as much as singing and lifting hands are, and said people should ask God what they should give. The megachurch pastor’s news views on tithing have sparked heated discussions and debates in Christian circles. Bishop Delton Fernander, president of the Bahamas Christian Council and pastor of New Destiny Baptist Cathedral, even included the issue in his weekly Bible study at the church on Gladstone Road. Speaking from the pulpit last Sunday, Bishop Fernander briefly shared his thoughts and encouraged people to attend the church’s Wednesday night weekly Bible study. He encouraged those in the audience to listen to Dr Dollar’s entire sermon and not just the introduction that he said could have likely been shared on social media as clickbait. “Listen to the entire sermon. At the heart of the sermon, he highlights that giving is from the heart, which is the place I believe every church is at today,” he said. Some local Christians also shared their views on the matter, saying while sometimes they do

not give ten per cent of their income, giving it an important aspect of their spiritual life. Ally Deveaux said: “I agree with Dr Dollar’s position. Under the Mosaic Law there was a blessing and a cursing tied to the act of tithing. If you did not give ten per cent of your finances then you were cursed. However, we no longer live under the constraints or requirements of the Mosaic Law. We have the freedom to give as much as we want or as little as we want. Once we give with a cheerful heart, that is all the scriptures in the New Testament recommends,” she said. As for Clayton Sawyer, he said he still believes in tithing and will give his ten per cent even though he agrees with Dr Dollar’s perspective on the subject. “I know what Dr Dollar is saying is true, but I will still always give the minimum of ten per cent. God has been extraordinarily good to me and the least I can do to support the work of the kingdom is give ten percent,” he said. In some churches people have been emotionally manipulated and even sometimes pressured into tithing. However, Marcia Saunders believes this approach is not right. “I have been in churches where there the pastor or person receiving the offering is pressuring people to sow and to give. They often times say if you give you would be blessed. When the truth of the matter is that we should give because it is in our heart to give. God has already blessed us. And it is wrong for ministers of the gospel to pressure or manipulate people into giving. No Christian should ever be pressured to give, and churches that do so are wrong and need to stop it. We should always give to God out of a heart of thankfulness never pressure,” she said.

500-year-old icon looted from divided Cyprus repatriated NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — A 500-year-old Orthodox icon that was looted from a church in the breakaway north of ethnically divided Cyprus has been returned to the island. The icon of the Enthroned Christ, which Cyprus’ Antiquities Department dates to around the end of the 15th century to the early 16th century, was presented at a ceremony Tuesday to the head of the island’s Orthodox Church, Archbishop Chrysostomos. The icon belongs to the 12th-century Christ Antiphonitis Church, which is near the northern coastal town of Kyrenia. It was one of countless icons, frescoes, mosaics and religious artifacts stolen from churches that were abandoned when a 1974 Turkish invasion split the island between primarily Orthodox Greek Cypriots in the south and Muslim Turkish Cypriots in the north.
Turkey’s invasion had followed a coup mounted by supporters of union with Greece. “Efforts to repatriate stolen artifacts are continuing,” said Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos, who presented the icon to the church. The Cyprus Church traced the icon to an auction in Switzerland, and Swiss police seized it in 2014. Following a long legal process, Swiss authorities handed the icon over last week and it was flown to Cyprus. The Cyprus Church has for decades been trying to track down numerous religious artifacts stolen from hundreds of abandoned churches and monasteries in the north and sold abroad. The church said the returned icon would be held by the archbishopric “until it returns to its rightful place” in the Antiphonitis Church.

Vatican names three women to office that vets bishop nominations ROME (AP) — Pope Francis on Wednesday named three women to serve as members of the Vatican office that vets bishop nominations, in another first for women to have a say in Catholic Church governance. The Dicastery for Bishops oversees the work of most of the church’s 5,300 bishops, who run dioceses around the world. The dicastery's members, who include cardinals, bishops and now women, meet periodically to evaluate proposed new bishops whose names are forwarded by Vatican ambassadors. The ambassadors usually come up with three candidates for each opening
after consulting with local church members. The pope still makes the final call and can bypass candidates proposed by his ambassadors and then vetted by the dicastery. But the addition of women into the consultation process is nevertheless significant and a response to calls to break up the all-male clerical hierarchy of the Holy See and demands that women have a greater say in church decision-making. The new members are Sister Raffaella Petrini, who already holds a highranking Vatican position as the secretary general of the Vatican City State, which runs the Vatican Museums and other administrative parts of the territory.
Also named was Sister Yvonne Reungoat, former superior general of the Daughters of Mary the Helper, a religious order also known as the Salesian Sisters; as well as a laywoman, Maria Lia Zervino, president of a Catholic women’s umbrella group, the World Union of Female Catholic Organisations. Church doctrine reserves the priesthood for men, given Christ’s apostles were male. Women have often complained they have a second-class status in the church, even though they do the lion’s share of its work running schools, hospitals and passing the faith from generation to generation.

(THE CONVERSATION) – The relentless supply of movies about superheroes and supervillains is difficult to ignore. Some people can’t get enough. Others hope to avoid them. But psychological researchers see a cultural phenomenon worthy of study. Fictional characters with supernatural powers are often based on mythical gods and goddesses, fighting an ancient battle between good and evil with abilities that violate our intuitive expectations about the world. In our 2019 published research, we asked 300 study participants to describe features of fictional supernatural beings and we compared them with features of the gods people worship. We found some striking differences that provide clues as to why some beings attract religious devotion, while others do not. What makes religious beings special The question of why religious beings are special is more puzzling than it first appears. Initially, it seems obvious that an ancestral spirit that, for example, reads minds and walks through walls, could be an object of worship. We expect minds to be private, living things to die, and solid objects to be impermeable. Entities that defy such expectations – which researchers call “folk theories” – are remarkable and memorable. The problem is, many other entities violate our folk theories in the same way. Some superheroes can read minds and walk through walls as well, and yet these characters rarely elicit belief. Still other entities with superhuman powers, such as Bigfoot, vampires or werewolves, are occasionally believed in, but not prayed to.

Our work points to an answer that has been proposed by philosophers and psychologists for centuries, from David Hume to Sigmund Freud. We believe in gods because it is comforting.
When we asked participants about the traits they ascribe to supernatural religious figures, we found that, on average, they rated them as more beneficent than fictional beings that people do not worship. In other words, religious beings are better equipped to improve people’s lives in significant ways than
The comfort theory Religious beings were also found to routinely defy folk theories about psychology in particular – possessing abilities such as omniscience, mind-control, telepathy and precognition – rather than defying folk theories about biology (such as regeneration) or physics (flight). In our current research, we found people believe that beings with such psychological abilities are better equipped to help us. This may be because threats to our species have become increasingly social over evolutionary time. Detecting deception, maintaining one’s reputation and avoiding social exclusion have become more significant concerns than avoiding predators and finding shelter. Religious beings with the ability to mitigate these social threats should be particularly appealing. Other features pointed to the comfort theory in less obvious ways. We found that abilities attributed to religious beings were more ambiguous than those attributed to fictional characters. For example, omnipotence and weather control certainly defy expectations, but which ones, and how many? Is god manipulating a storm with his mind, or physically pulling it into position? This ambiguity may best be described with the phrase “God works in mysterious ways.” Research has shown that when we want to believe in something, such as personally possessing a positive trait, it helps if the trait is ambiguous (e.g. sophisticated) rather than precise (e.g. punctual). This gives us latitude to interpret a variety of evidence in its favour. The same argument can apply to gods we want to believe in. One person may prefer the god that pulls storms into position. Another may prefer the telekinetic god. If both interpretations are allowed, the god can be made to fit what each person
finds plausible. Ambiguous features therefore make it easier to believe in comforting gods. Gods are neither heroes nor villains The final feature of religious beings we discovered is that they do not easily fit into the superhero or supervillain categories that often distinguish fictional beings. Gods are more beneficent, but they are also more ambivalent, than fictional characters. They have the ability to reward, but also to threaten and punish. While a mix of carrots and sticks undoubtedly helps gods enforce religious and moral rules, we suggest that ambivalence is also crucial for eliciting religious rituals and prayers, which in turn reinforce belief. Indeed, there is little point in beseeching a purely benevolent or malevolent god: the former will always grant your request, and the latter never will. Only an ambivalent god can be swayed by an act of faith or a faithfully performed ritual. A similar account might help explain why polytheistic religions typically contain a mix of positive and negative gods, the latter of which provide little comfort on their own. In summary, gods are more beneficent, ambivalent, ambiguous and psychologically astonishing than fictional characters and, notably, these are precisely the traits that encourage belief. THREE-HUNDRED LITURGICAL DANCERS GIVE PRAISE TO GOD AS PART OF INDEPENDENCE FESTIVITIES By CARA HUNT Tribune Features Writer cbrennen@tribunemedia.net

RAISE filled downtown Nassau last Friday as more than 300 children from the Urban Renewal Community Centres and several churches participated in a special liturgical dance parade for the Independence celebrations. The parade began at the Pompey Museum. Participants then made their up way to Rawson Square. The event was coordinated by Dr Anne Higgins, who is the president of the CID-Nassau World Dance Council and the Caribbean Christian Dance Network. Dr Higgins said that this was the eighth year dancers have participated in Independence celebrations. “We started doing this during the 41st Independence celebration, because we noticed that after all of the Independence events such as the flag-raising and the ceremonies on Clifford Park and the Junkanoo rush-out, the tent would still be up, but things tended to be very quiet on the tenth itself, and so we would always have an event on Independence Day,” she said. The pandemic put a halt to the celebrations in the last two years, but Dr Higgins said they were thrilled to be able to resume the event. And she said she was inspired to do things a little differently this year. “The Lord told me to bring the kids into town and give Him a praise
during the Independence celebrations, and so that is what we did,” she said. Rather than have the event on Clifford Park, they chose to go downtown. “We started from Pompey Square. We got 300 plus children from each of the Urban Community Centres and three local churches. We were able to get buses donated to transport them. I was able to find 300 costumes for each of the kids, in some cases I was able to just turn tops that I had into dresses to fit some of the girls, and my husband did all the choreography with the kids,” she said. Dr Higgins said they were thrilled with the way worked things out. “It went extremely well and we were so pleased with what we were able to accomplish with the kids in such a short time and the witness we were able to provide,” she said. Additionally, she was able to gift the kids their costumes, which they will be able to use in future events and celebrations. Next year will be a big year for Dr Higgins’ dance ministry. Not only is she planning to host a huge celebration here at home for the country’s 50th Independence – A Urban Cultural Fest – but she will be leading a dance delegation to Paris, France, next April as the World Dance Council will be celebrating their 50th anniversary as well. More than 200 countries are expected to send dancers to the event.
