N celebration of Bahamian families and the reopening of the country, a newly established institution is encouraging people to participate in a ‘Thanksgiving in June’ event this weekend. The National Organisation Development Connections International (NODCI) is asking all Bahamians to come together as families in their homes at 3pm this Sunday and offer up prayers of thanksgiving and songs of praise to the Almighty God. “We thank Him for keeping us during this global pandemic and for all that He is doing to carry us safely through this unprecedented crisis of mammoth proportions,” the NODCI members said. They are also encouraging people to post photos of their families on Facebook using the hashtag ThankGodforFathers&Family and to the WhatsApp group at 803-6300. Isaiah 26:3 provides us with a nugget that is well worth remembering: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” The inner peace that the believer experiences is not due to happenstance but is a blessing from God because the believer is focused on the Creator at all times. In reality, no other result could prevail because one is “stayed” on God. God’s grace which is freely available enables us to defeat Satan and ovecome any spiritual warfare that Satan initiates. This spiritual warfare normally takes place in our minds and seeks to disturb our inner peace and
create havoc in our lives. The prolific Paul reminds us that “and the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.” (Romans 16:20) The unspeakable joy which is often accompanied with inner peace is such a wonderful encounter and must be experienced to be fully appreciated. It is a gift of God.....not of man. Paul further tells us in Romans 15:13: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” The believer who is living and experiencing inner peace has a close personal relationship with God and can petition God when there is a legitimate need.
Matthew 7:7 tells us, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” Our inner peace creates a momentum of its own and we are catapulted to another level altogether in our spiritual journey and relationship with God. What a joy and blessing it is to experience real, genuine, inner peace which can only come from God. Such peace is part and parcel of the way of life for the believer, notwithstanding the vicissitudes of life. Jesus tells us “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) We are truly blessed! Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

THE TRIBUNE I LOVE the 12 minor prophets of the Holy Scriptures. They have strong, poignant messages that are essentially important and relevant for all today. Men like Hosea, Joel, Jonah, and a plethora of others that wrote under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, transmitting God’s plan for humanity prophetically. The messages of the minor prophets aren’t minor within the grand scheme of things. In fact, they are of paramount importance. They are labelled minor because of their volume, and not necessarily their messages. Their prophetic messages were often weighty. Habakkuk the prophet, for example, lived in a very hostile and volatile period in time. He penned four prophetic discourses pertaining to the coming invasion of Judah by the Chaldeans around the late seventh century BC. Conservative Bible scholars placed Habakkuk’s prophetic book around 609 BC. In it, he adamantly appeals to Yahweh God on behalf of his people that were in a state of confusion, and he outlined his messages accordingly. The concerns mentioned within this prophetic dialogue are phenomenal to say the least. I can relate to Habakkuk as he shows his patriotism for his nation, as I do for mine, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Habakkuk 1:1-4 states: “The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. O Lord, how long shall I cry, and Thou will not hear! even cry out unto Thee of violence, and Thou wilt not save! Why dost Thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. Therefore the law is slacked, and judgement doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgement proceedeth.” That’s deep! The prophet was under distress because of the lawlessness within the land of Judah. It seems the strong were taking advantage of the weak and underprivileged. Justice was only for the upper echelon of society. Sound familiar? Sin in the land and injustice towards the weak are here too in the Bahamas! Make no mistake about that. Habakkuk took up the task of questioning God concerning this very thing with a compendium of questions. As a disclaimer, let me say that I don’t believe in going before God in any odd way, but through His word, like as Habakkuk did. Habakkuk opened up his writings with the word “burden”. And his prophetic message was indeed a burden that weighed heavy on the prophet’s heart. Habakkuk was calling on God to act on behalf of the oppressed. So God answered, but it wasn’t what the prophet had anticipated. Habakkuk 1:5-8 states: “Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. For, lo, I

They are terrible and dreadful: their judgement and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.” God’s answer didn’t sit well with Habakkuk. God was going to send the Babylonian army to punish Judah. The prophet was perplexed and confused about the proposition of this impending judgement. God was about to move on behalf of the righteous, but the caveat was that the judgement would affect the entire population. We sometimes find ourselves in the same position. Judah was corrupted, but not as evil as Babylon, yet God was utilising the Babylonian army as the instrument of judgement to punish Judah. So Habakkuk countered back with this discourse (Habakkuk 1:12-13):

when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?” So now the dialogue has intensified between the prophet and his God. Let me summarise this for you. Habakkuk was crying out against the injustices that were perpetrated against the lesser class of his people by the upper class. God promised him that He would intervene on behalf of the afflicted by means of the Chaldeans of Babylon. Habakkuk didn’t like the idea of a hedonistic nation as the progenitor of judgement on Judah. Sometimes we as Christians find ourselves in this very same predicament. Wanting God to deal with the ungodly on behalf of the righteous and ourselves, but when He begins to act we retract our prayers, as if we can! “Let go and let God!” In other words, we must learn to trust God during the process. Habakkuk 2:4 states: “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by faith.” Faith is believing God while trusting Him. Call me Habakkuk! The name Habakkuk means ‘one who embraces’. Habakkuk had to embrace what the Lord was doing. Habakkuk 3:17-19 says: “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and He will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.” You can call me Habakkuk, because like the real Habakkuk who was faced with a real life situation, so are most of us. No justice, no peace: Why Catholic priests are kneeling with George Floyd protesters
RELIGION By ANNA L PETERSON Professor of Religion, University of Florida (THE CONVERSATION) Two days after the Catholic bishop of El Paso, Mark Seitz, knelt with a dozen other priests in a silent prayer for George Floyd holding a “Black Lives Matter” sign, he received a phone call from Pope Francis. In an earlier era Seitz, the first known Catholic bishop to join the anti-racism protests spurred by Floyd’s killing, might have expected censure from the Vatican, which is often associated with social conservatism. Instead, Seitz told the Texas news site El Paso Matters, the pope “thanked me.” Days earlier Pope Francis had posted a message to Americans on the Vatican’s website saying he “witnessed with great concern the disturbing social unrest” in the United States and calling Floyd’s death “tragic.” “My friends,” he wrote, “we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life.” Francis is seen as a progressive pope, but these are not isolated examples of his personal values. As a scholar of religion and politics, I recognise that both Seitz’s actions and the pope’s approval reflect a distinctive commitment to social justice that has entered the Catholic mainstream over the past 50 years. Changing social role This commitment has transformed a millennia-old Catholic tradition of valuing peace over justice. Writing in the chaos surrounding the fall of the Roman Empire, the prominent fifthcentury theologian St Augustine asserted that peace was the greatest good humans can attain on Earth. While both peace and justice are valuable, Augustine believed, peace – meaning civil order – takes priority. He thought justice could not be sustained amid violence. Many bishops, priests and theologians since Augustine have used similar arguments to criticise social changes and legitimise the status quo, insisting that the faithful should bear worldly injustices and seek their reward in heaven. This moral theology provided justification for the church to ally with economic, political and military elites, from medieval kings to Latin American dictators. That began to change with the Second Vatican Council of 1962 to 1965, which brought together bishops from around the world to reevaluate the church’s role in modern society. The council’s final document sided firmly with social justice. Inverting Augustine’s thinking, Catholic bishops asserted that peace cannot “be reduced to the maintenance of a balance of power between enemies.” The only way to achieve lasting peace, they asserted, was to address the sources of unrest. As Pope Paul VI stated in 1972: “If you want peace, work for justice.” Liberation at any cost Pope Paul’s rhetoric echoed a core
THE TRIBUNE principle of liberation theology, a Catholic movement that was emerging from Latin America around the same time. Liberation theologians see violence not as an individual flaw but as a feature of unjust social or political structures. This “institutionalised violence,” as the Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez termed it, is the root cause of all violence – including government repression and popular uprisings against that repression. The best way to avoid violence, as the Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador wrote in 1979, is “to guarantee a truly democratic state, one that defends the fundamental rights of all its citizens, based on a just economic order.” Under Romero’s leadership, large sectors of the Salvadoran Catholic Church backed the popular uprising against the country’s oppressive military regime in what became the Salvadoran Civil War. Catholic leaders and laypeople also supported opposition movements in Nicaragua, Brazil, Chile and other Latin American countries. Romero, who was assassinated in 1980, became a Catholic saint in 2018. Not ‘both sides’ Liberation theologians believe that those seeking change should employ peaceful methods whenever possible. But when nonviolent protests and legislative channels prove fruitless or are met with violence, new tactics might be necessary. “The church cannot state, in a simplistic fashion, that it condemns every kind of violence,” Romero wrote. Romero criticised Salvadoran “moderates” who saw violence on both sides of the country’s civil war as equally wrong, implying a moral equality between those who uphold injustices and those who challenge them. The church, he insisted, must side with the victims of institutionalised violence. This principle, known as the “preferential option for the poor,” guided Bishop Seitz’s decision to protest in El Paso. “When religion becomes stagnant, we can forget that the Word always comes to us crucified and powerless,” Seitz told the National Catholic Reporter on June 4 to explain his silent protest. In Christian tradition, “the Word” refers to Jesus, the word of God incarnate. Seitz then cited the prominent midcentury theologian James Cone, who said US Christians must fight for racial justice because, “In America, the Word comes tortured, black and lynched.” This isn’t the first time Seitz has sided with society’s most marginalised. MEDITATION ECONOMIC CRISIS AND THE BAHAMIAN FAMILY BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS THE Bible Let us turn to the Bible to see who faced economic challenge and trusted God by their actions: 1. Widow of Zaraphath I Kings 17: 12-16 (NIV) “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, ‘I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.’ “Elijah said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’ “ “She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.” 2. Widow and The Coin (Mark 12:41-43 NIV) “Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the
temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. “Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.’ They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” 3. Habbakuk (3:17-19 NRSV), titled Trust and Joy in the Midst of Trouble “Though the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails, and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the God of my salvation. “God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and makes me tread upon the heights.” Past personal experience Just about all of us have known times of personal economic challenge as the world reels under the shock of this global recession and its far-reaching implications as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For some of us, our financial ordeals started
a long time before this latest recession. In this respect, I see us as those who have been refined in the fire and are capable of a different level of ministry as longterm survivors. I recall a day while living abroad, I posted my last $20 to help someone in need, and in a letter I received at that same time from the letter carrier there was $20 from my mother-in-law. We can attest to Habbukuk’s declaration of trust in God because we have known God’s faithfulness for ourselves, and may have sung hymns about God’s faithfulness with tears in our own eyes. In response to the words of hymns like ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’, let us ask ourselves the following questions: • Just how much are we trusting God’s faithfulness during these challenging times? • How much are we exhibiting our faithfulness by responding to those in need as a nation, the Church, and as an individual? • Do we tell others how God has provided for us? • Do we withhold or hoard from others? The Church today The Church’s response has to be to speak of trust in God and to engage in love in action: • This is our message of hope to the family. • This is our ministry of love to the family.

In order to restore and promote trust in God, let us pray and engage in prayerful action about coping during spiritual and economic crisis: • Prayerful action in response to need, for example soup kitchens and other outreach ministries • Education: Seminars on empowerment and employment, budgeting and finance, co-operatives and other forms of wholesale shopping as a church or group • Prayer and study: Family devotions including hymns, prayers, and Scripture; reading of spiritual books on stewardship, financial planning, greed. Bible study in all church groups (for example Sunday School, CYM, ACW, ACM) and during sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, marriage, ordination et cetera.) • Weekly sharing of personal experiences of God’s faithfulness • Retreats, Renewal Weekends and other opportunities to grow spiritually, and offer emotional and spiritual support to those in need. EARLY 600 families benefit from the “Feeding Bain Grants Town” project on a weekly basis, and without a continuous flow of resources they may not have food to put on the table. For this reason, the Mount Olive Baptist Church, together with Bain Grants Town Advancement Association, is hosting a major fundraising initiative in the form of a virtual televised musical event. The event takes place this Saturday with the aim of appealing to the public for donations to keep the initiative going and Bahamian families fed. It will air on JCN TV at 8pm. The musical event will feature performances by entertainers Vice Versa, Naomi Taylor, Clinton Crawford on the keyboard, Ralph Munnings on the saxophone, Kevin Dean playing percussion, Fred Munnings, Osano Neely, Ebony Johnson and Dion Turnquest. The performances will be interspersed with brief remarks by individuals connected to Bain and Grants Town. Rev CB Moss, who is spearheading the initiative, encourages Bahamians to donate to the cause so that they can
continue to provide the basic necessity of food to people. “As you know, the pandemic slammed into the Bahamas like a tsunami and it was very devastating. It particularly impacted communities like Bain and Grants Town because we have had challenges, economic and social, for a long time prior to this so we were very vulnerable. A lot of unemployment existed so this just exacerbated the situation,” he said. Rev Moss said Mount Olive was forced to expanded its social ministry as it relates to feeding the community, something they have been doing for the last 30 years. “But we realised that our church would not be able to address the problem for the entire community so then our organisation (turned) to the Bain Grants Town Advancement Association to (form a task force),” he said. This task forces divided the areas of concern into public health, social stability, and economic support of the district. “Through this task force we encourage the people of the community to obey the rules and the law like wearing their masks and to keep to the social distancing rules.
We have done a pretty good job of working with the community. Now the social stability side, we realise that a hungry man is a dangerous man, so to speak, and we decided to provide basic food supplies for the residents to maintain stability. If persons are not able to provide food items for their families you are going to to have social unrest,” said Rev Moss. So far, more than 5,000 food packages have been distributed, in addition to serving hundreds of breakfasts. However, Rev Moss said this is not nearly enough, as tens of thousands are out of work and are uncertain when or if they will return to their jobs. “We must do more as from all indications the situation will get worse before it
gets better. As a result we have planned a number of fundraising events to assist in funding the Feeding Project,” he said. For those wishing to assist, Rev Moss said no financial contribution is too small. “We want people to not only watch the programme, but also make pledges. Anything they can give will be help,” he said. “The bigger message we want to get out is that communities must take responsibility of their development and not wait for outsiders to come in and do something. We are encouraging every community to get involved in helping themselves and that is the way our community will move forward. So at heart the event is designed to bring people together.”
