Freedom Farm champion boys! By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net GRAND Bahama — Back after a year’s absence, Freedom Farm clinched a 4-3 walk-off-the-field victory to secure the boys’ 14-under championship title over the Grand Bahama Little League yesterday in the Bahamas Baseball Association’s National Championships at the Emera Baseball Stadium. With two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and time expired, Freedom Farm got struck out to extend the game. In the fifth, catcher Tyler Wallace got a one-out single to right field to plate shortstop Ryan Reckley with the game winning run. Reckley started the inning with a leadoff triple. Freedom Farm’s head coach Clarence McKenzie said it was a chance to regain their prominence. “This one was very sweet. After being absent last year, we had to prove that we are still the number one baseball league in the country,” McKenzie said. “The competition was very stiff. This is the second time we played them and it came down to a one-run differential in order to get the win. “That shows the high level of play to get the win. The game should have been over in the third, but we went to the fourth and had the winning run 80 feet away, but we couldn’t capitalise. We came back in the fifth with a runner on third

GRAND Bahama — The Grand Bahama Little League successfully defended their 18-under title with a 3-1 decision over the Junior Baseball League of Nassau in the only divisional championship that went to best-Baseball National Championships over the weekend. Only two teams participated in the division, while the other five divisions were decided on a onegame championship. In the clincher early Sunday morning at the Emera Baseball Complex, the GBLL held off JBLN 3-2. It was indicative of the scores in the other three games where GBLL won 3-2 in the opener and took a 2-0 lead with a 7-6 victory. However, JBLN, coached by Ken Adderley,

but on my last at bat, I drove it to right,” said Wallace, a 14-year-old preparing to enter grade 10 at St Augustine’s College in September. “I was looking for the pitch.” Davante Brown was the winning pitcher and Brandon Hutchinson got tagged with the loss. Hutchinson also helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 and both shortstop Jay Knowles and catcher Sterry Martin and third baseman Adari Grant all

scored a run for Grand Bahama, coached by Sidney Thomas. “It was a close game, but our defence wasn’t there,” Thomas said. “Hitting was our problem. We didn’t hit the ball like we are capable of doing. A lot of our good batters got strike out. We didn’t like we were capable of doing.” Thomas said he knew that it would have been a very close game because both teams are evenly matched. But Freedom

Farm put the timely hits when they needed and they came away with the close encounter. In their round robin match-up, Freedom Farm nipped GBLL 2-1 as centre fielder Andre Arthur was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored and catcher Tyler Wallace was 1-for-2 with a RBI. Tyler Munroe got the win on the mound. Kymani Shepherd was the losing pitcher.

avoided getting swept as they pulled off a 2-1 win to cut the deficit to 2-1. In another exciting finish early yesterday morning, GBLL capped off another title with a stunning 2-1 victory and a 3-1 series advantage. “We worked hard year round,” said GBLL coach Keel Pinder. “We lost one or two players to school, but we held it together to defend our championship. “We were disappointed that we didn’t have more teams but we knew that JBLN was going to give us a good push. “Every game we played was either won or lost by one run, so at least it wasn’t a bad team we played. It was a fight to the end in every game. We are looking forward to coming back and defending our title next year. Hopefully we will have some more competition.”

THE BAAAs Senior Athletics Championships, presented by Kalik, featured many of the Bahamas’ top competitors in the sport, one of whom shifted disciplines for the two-day meet. Reigning Olympic 400m gold medallist Shaunae Miller-Uibo opted not to compete in her signature race or the 200m, but took to the field instead for a pair of events at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium. Miller-Uibo won the high jump with a mark of 1.70m and was also the lone competitor in the shot put, recording a mark of 11.48m. GRAND Bahama — Interrupted all weekend by the inclement weather, officials of the Bahamas Baseball Association had to call off the completion of their inaugural Andre Rodgers National Baseball Championships, featuring the amalgamation of all the island leagues, after heavy showers left the Emera Baseball Complex under water. Teran Rodgers, the tournament director, said they will hold an emergency meeting tonight to decide the outcome of the games not played. The good thing, he said, is that the games undecided are being played between teams from New Providence. While the champions were decided in both the 18-under and 14-under divisions, officials were forced to call off all of the other games after the rain came pouring down on Sunday with the 16-under, 12-under, 10-under and 8-under divisions still undecided. The 16-under boys championship game between the Junior Baseball League of Nassau and the Grand Bahama Little League was halted in the bottom of the second. JBLN was holding a 1-0 lead at that point. In the bronze medal game in the 16-under boys division, Freedom Farm pounded North Abaco 10-1 as centre fielder Tre’en Dorsett and catcher Ethan Bain were both 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Trevor Barry was third at 2.15m and Ryan Ingraham fourth at 2.10m. Alexis Gray took the

women’s 100m in 11.85s ahead of V’Alonee Robinson in 11.86s and Tayla Carter in 11.88s. Jaida Knowles finished fourth in 11.92s. Gray went on to also finish second in the 200m in 23.72s behind Tynia Gaither, who won the event in 23.17s. Warren Fraser won the men’s century in 10.36s. Shavez Hart was second and Cliff Resias third – both in in 10.45s, while CARIFTA gold medallist Joel Johnson was fourth in 10.46s. Hart took the men’s 200m in 20.90s, followed by Anthony Adderley in 20.98s and Ian Kerr third in 20.99s. Tamara Myers took the women’s triple jump at 13.67m and Charisma Taylor was second at 12.85m. Johnie Jean-Jacques’ throw of 13.69m won the men’s shot put. Katrina Seymour won the 400mH

in 59.23s. Andre Colebrook took the men’s race in 50.74s followed by Matthew Thompson (53.91) and Shakeem Smith (54.02). Colebrook also won the 800m in 1:55.83. Shiloh Seymour was second in 1:56.04 and Lhvine Joseph was third in 1:59.98. Quanisha Marshall took the women’s 800m in 2:18.36. Drexel Maycock won the discus with his throw of 50.65m. The championships served as the qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean Games, set for Barranquilla, Colombia, July 20 to August 3 and the NACAC Senior Championships in Toronto, Canada, August 10-12. For the first time, NACAC will be offering prize money for the top finishers in the championships, which is expected to boost the participation of the top athletes in the region.

MEN’s senior national basketball team head coach Mario Bowleg called this current Bahamas roster “one of the most talented the federation has put together” as they continue to seek FIBA World Cup qualification. Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield will headline the roster for the third window of the Americas Group qualifier as the Bahamas gets set to take on the US Virgin Islands on June 28 and the Dominican Republic on July 2 in Puerto Rico. Other current professional players on the roster include Jaraun “Kino” Burrows (FOS Provence Basket – French B), Michael Carey Jr (Etoile -French B), Zane Knowles (Etoile - French B), Kadeem Coleby (Akita, Japan), Shaquille Cleare (LNG Switzerland), Lynden Rose of the NBA G-League’s Salt Lake City Stars and G-League draftee Danrad ‘Chicken’ Knowles. Messi is running out of time to save Argentina’s World Cup By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — For Lionel Messi, the time is now. Time to score at the World Cup. Time to save Argentina from another crushing disappointment. Time to live up to his reputation as one of the world’s best players. Time to end questions about his performance in the biggest games. One thing there isn’t time for is celebration. Messi turned 31 yesterday, two days before Tuesday’s must-win game against Nigeria. Nigeria would advance with a win, and a draw might be enough for the Super Eagles depending on group leader Croatia’s result against Iceland. Other stars have come through at this World Cup. Messi’s great rival, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, has scored four goals. So has Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku. Neymar has a goal for Brazil. Toni Kroos scored when Germany desperately needed it. The only thing Messi has accumulated after two matches is mounting pressure. To leave Russia without even making it past the group stage would be a massive humiliation for Messi. It would also strengthen the impression some fans have of him back home, which is of a maverick genius who goes missing in critical international matches. His only medal with Argentina came 10 years ago — at the Summer Olympics — but other than that there have been only demoralising defeats. Messi was kept quiet in the World Cup final four years ago as Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany. Messi also played for Argentina when it lost the Copa America final in 2007 — when he didn’t shoulder

much blame because of his youth — and in 2015 and 2016. After the loss to Chile two years ago, Messi missed a penalty in the shootout and then announced his retirement. But he changed his mind, desperate to make things right by leading Argentina to World Cup success. It was Messi’s hat trick — in the final qualifying match at Ecuador — that got Argentina to Russia in the first place. Considering he will be 35 at the next tournament, this may be his last chance. Tuesday’s game, therefore, is make-or-break not just for his country but also for him. So far in this tournament, he has missed a penalty — which was poorly taken — in the 1-1 draw against Iceland. Then he had a frustrating game in the 3-0 loss to Croatia. The widely accepted view is that Messi didn’t get enough help from his teammates and wasn’t getting the ball to his feet quickly enough to trouble the slick Croats. It’s a convenient argument when applied to most forwards, but Messi is unique and beyond comparison with all current players except Ronaldo. He is a five-time Golden Ball winner, a scorer of 552 club goals for Barcelona — not to mention 64 for his country — and dozens of hat tricks. If his teammates can’t find a way to play to his strengths, Messi should still be good enough to produce at least one moment of magic. Preferably on Tuesday night in St Petersburg. COACH ON THE ROPES There were rumours in the Argentine media that beleaguered coach Jorge Sampaoli wouldn’t even be on the field against Nigeria after players asked that he be removed. Argentina’s football

Sampaoli has a contract that runs through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. “You have seen the coach and the team training,” Tapia told reporters. “It’s clear that what you are saying is a lie.” Tapia didn’t respond to questions. Tension has been evident at practice, too. Sampaoli gave Messi a birthday greeting yesterday, kissing his star player on the cheek and patting him on the back. But

CAUSE FOR CONCERN Given how easily Croatia found holes in Argentina’s defence last week, Sampaoli’s defenders have good cause to dread facing Ahmed Musa. Musa’s searing pace allows him to hover around the midfield and attack from deep positions. This means Argentina’s defenders will be less inclined to push up for fear of leaving too much space behind them for him to exploit. It could end up impacting Messi too, since slowing Argentina’s passing game is the key to keeping him quiet. With defenders sitting too deep, this means a slower transition to the midfield and therefore less passing cohesion, and ultimately less possession for Messi. Argentina’s best bet is to score first and control the dynamic, forcing Nigeria to push forward and allowing Argentina to find Messi on the break. Then, it will be down to him to do the rest. As usual.

SOURCES: SALAH CONSIDERING RETIRING FROM NATIONAL TEAM By HAMZA HENDAWI Associated Press VOLGOGRAD, Russia (AP) — Mohamed Salah told Egypt team officials and teammates that he is considering retiring from international play because he is angry about being used as a political symbol while the World Cup squad was based in Chechnya, two people close to the player told The Associated Press yesterday. Salah — the Muslim world’s most popular soccer player today — said he was particularly annoyed with a team banquet hosted by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who used the dinner to grant Salah “honourary citizenship,” according to the two people. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. Egypt soccer federation spokesman Osama Ismail said that Salah has

not complained to the federation. “Only what Salah writes on his Twitter account should be counted on.” Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region in southern Russia, was devastated by wars between separatists and Russian forces. Kadyrov, a former rebel who switched his loyalties to Moscow, faces accusations of gross human rights violations, including abductions and killings. Salah, who also took part in a photo opportunity with Kadyrov, has been criticised by the British media for allowing the Chechen leader to use him to improve the government’s international image. Salah had not responded publicly to the criticism while the team was based in Grozny, the Chechen capital. Salah’s meetings with Kadyrov carry the potential to hurt his popularity in Europe, where he has been something of an

A populace that sees Salah as a hero would likely be furious, with the blame going to a government facing growing popular discontent over its decision to hike the price of fuel, drinking water and electricity. Egypt coach Hector Cuper, was cagey when asked yesterday about Kadyrov’s use of Salah to make political gains. He said FIFA listed Grozny as one of the cities that could be used as a World Cup training base. Human Rights Watch and other groups unsuccessfully tried to persuade FIFA to drop Grozny from

the list of possible team bases. The banquet Friday night was held at Kadyrov’s presidential palace in Grozny, and the Chechen leader posed with Salah for pictures while pinning a medal on his chest. “It is a deserved honour,” Kadyrov wrote on Russian social media, adding that Salah’s presence had driven “unprecedented interest in football.” Kadyrov said he wants Egypt to return to Chechnya after the World Cup for a friendly against local club Akhmat Grozny, which is named after Kadyrov’s assassinated father. A video clip of the ceremony showed Kadyrov seated at a table flanked by Salah and Hany Abo Rida, chairman of Egypt’s football federation. Dancing troupes and singers performed for Kadyrov and his guests, with Salah grim-faced at times.

WHO’S IN AND WHO’S OUT MOSCOW (AP) — Who’s in, who’s out and possible scenarios at the World Cup: GROUP A Russia and Uruguay have clinched berths in the round of 16 and play each other today to determine who wins the group. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been eliminated. GROUP B Morocco has been eliminated, leaving Portugal and Spain (four points each) and Iran (three) to compete for two spots. Spain plays Morocco today, when Portugal meets Iran. GROUP C France has advanced and leads with six points. Denmark is second with four after a 1-1 draw against Australia, which has one point. Peru has been eliminated. Denmark plays France on Tuesday, when Australia takes on Peru. GROUP D Croatia has secured a trip to the second round and tops the group with six points. Nigeria (three points) will advance with a win over Argentina (one point) on Tuesday, when Iceland plays Croatia. But Iceland (one point) or the last-place Argentines could survive with a win and a Nigeria loss or tie, depending on goal difference. GROUP E Brazil and Switzerland have four points apiece, Serbia has three, and any of them could grab one of the group’s two spots in the knockout stage. Serbia meets Brazil on Wednesday, likely needing a win. Switzerland plays Costa Rica at the same time. Costa Rica has been eliminated. GROUP F Mexico leads with six points but isn’t safe yet. If defending champion Germany defeats South Korea on Wednesday and Sweden simultaneously tops Mexico, three teams would finish with six points, sending it to tiebreakers that start with the best goal differential. If Mexico and South Korea win, Mexico would win the group and the other three teams would be tied. GROUP G Belgium and England moved to the second round emphatically — Belgium with a 5-2 drubbing of Tunisia and England with a 6-1 thrashing of Panama. They play each other on Thursday to determine who wins the group. Tunisia and Panama have been eliminated. Ayton: ‘I represent an entire nation’ By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net AN eager Phoenix Suns fan base was officially introduced to Deandre Ayton and expectations already loom large for the first No.1 overall NBA draft pick in franchise history. Ayton and other members of the Suns’ 2018 Draft class – Mikal Bridges, George King and Elie Okobo – were introduced to the organisation Friday at the Talking Stick Resort Arena. One of the main headlines emerging out of the press conference, Ayton revealing that he is likely to wear No. 22 for the Suns. The top overall pick comes with expectations of leading a franchise and the Bahamian star appears ready to do so in Phoenix. “I embrace it a lot. Throughout my career I’ve always had a chip on my shoulder when it comes to expectations knowing I represent an entire nation (the Bahamas),” he said. “Coming in I want to set the tone. I know I’m coming in as a rookie but that doesn’t mean I don’t mean business on the floor as well.” The Suns have a new regime at the helm with new head coach Igor Kokoskov. “I think he’s going to be one of the elite defenders in this league,” Kokoskov said. “He can match everything other big guys can do right now in the league.”

PHOENIX Suns’ Deandre Ayton answers a question at a news conference as the team introduces its new players after the NBA basketball draft. With Ayton’s selection, the Bahamas now joins the United States, Canada, Nigeria and Australia as the only countries with multiple No.1 overall NBA draft picks. It also represented the first No.1 pick made by the Suns in franchise history and the first No.1 pick from the University of Arizona. Ayton also previously participated in Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Global 2016 in Toronto, Canada and joins Andrea Bargnani (Italy; BWB Europe 2003; 1st overall in the 2006 NBA Draft) as the highest drafted former Basketball Without Borders campers ever.

He is the ninth consecutive college freshman to be selected with the first overall pick. The Suns have drafted as high as second twice, in 1969 and 1987. They finished the 2017-18 season 21-61 but return a promising young core led by rising star guard Devin Booker who averaged nearly 25 points per game last year. Ayton previously mentioned the prospects of teaming with Booker to create one of the league’s most dynamic tandems. During his lone season at Arizona, Ayton led the NCAA with 24 double-doubles, a PAC-12 freshman record.

HOUSTON (AP) — Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam in Houston’s eight-run second inning, helping Gerrit Cole and the Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 11-3 on Sunday. Gurriel finished with three hits as the AL Westleading Astros won for the 15th time in 17 games. Jose Altuve drove in two runs and scored twice, and Evan Gattis connected for a pinch-hit homer. Cole (9-1) struck out eight while pitching five innings of one-run ball. The right-hander has struck out at least eight in 12 of his 16 starts. Houston loaded the bases with one out in the second, and Tony Kemp brought home the first run when he reached on catcher’s interference on Drew Butera. Pitcher homers, Reds rally past Cubs 8-6 for 7th win in row CINCINNATI (AP) — Once pitcher Mike Lorenzen homered, the Cincinnati Reds got rolling again. Lorenzen connected for a pinch-hit shot to begin Cincinnati’s comeback, Jesse Winker added a pinch-hit, three-run homer in a big seventh, and the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 8-6 yesterday for their seventh straight win. Lorenzen’s homer was the third of his career and second in two games by a Reds pitcher. Anthony DeSclafani hit a grand slam on Saturday, the first by a Reds pitcher since 1959. “In a game like today we feel like we’re not meant to lose,” Lorenzen said. The last-place Reds completed a four-game sweep of the Cubs for the first time since 1983 at Riverfront Stadium. Their winning streak is their longest since a 10-game surge in July 2012. “We know what we can do,” Winker said. “It is cool coming to the field and expecting to win.

We’re in June right now. We are taking care of June. To win a game, it takes a group effort. There’s plenty of season left. We’re going to keep grinding good at bats. It’s been a lot of fun.” After Chicago scored five times in the fifth, Lorenzen homered in the bottom half. The Reds trailed 6-1 going into the seventh. Falcao scores, Colombia beats Poland 3-0 at the World Cup By SAMUEL PETREQUIN AP Sports Writer KAZAN, Russia (AP) — Four years after Radamel Falcao was supposed to lead Colombia at the World Cup, he’s doing just that. Falcao missed the tournament in Brazil with a knee injury and had to wait until arriving in Russia to score his first World Cup goal. It came in Colombia’s 3-0 victory over Poland yesterday. “It’s a dream goal,” Falcao said. “I’m happy for the victory, for the team’s performance and the goal that I scored, which I’ve been waiting for for many years.” The victory kept Colombia in the running for a spot in the round of 16 and knocked out Poland, the first European country to be eliminated. Falcao, Colombia’s alltime leading scorer with 30 goals, made sure he would stay healthy for this year’s World Cup by sitting out several matches with his Monaco club this season. So far, so good. “We always hope that he can score and hope that he can be fit as he was today, and we want to help him,” Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said. “I think the fact that he scored was very important, not just for today but for the matches to come. “He is a symbol of the national team. He is a symbol of Colombian football.” Playing some scintillating soccer in Kazan, Falcao scored with the outside of his foot in the 70th minute after a superb pass from playmaker Juan Quintero in the back of the defence. Yerry Mina scored the first goal in the 40th and Juan Cuadrado completed the win in the 75th. Both teams lost their Group H openers and knew another loss would end their hopes of advancing. Colombia will next face Senegal on Thursday in Samara with a chance to win the group, while Poland will play Japan in Volgograd. KEY TO SUCCESSES Given his first start after fully recovering from a calf injury, Rodriguez lived up to expectations. He pressed relentlessly, tracked back and delivered an assist for Mina. Rodriguez has now been directly involved in nine goals in seven World Cup appearances for Colombia, scoring six and assisting on three. He formed an excellent partnership with Quintero to create some beautiful play for Colombia.

POOR POLAND Poland played well for 15 minutes but then faded. The team was overwhelmed in midfield and looked clueless in attack in another error-ridden display that resulted in an early exit. Poland has now failed to keep a clean sheet in its last 10 World Cup matches, since beating Portugal 1-0 in 1986. “The Colombian team was a much better team,” Poland coach Adam Nawalka said.

KROOS SCORES LATE TO GIVE GERMANY 2-1 WIN OVER SWEDEN By TIM BOOTH AP Sports Writer SOCHI, Russia (AP) — The desperate world champions from Germany were seconds from losing control of their World Cup fate when Toni Kroos whispered to Marco Reus just outside Sweden’s penalty area. With the score tied in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Kroos seemed to remind Reus of a tricky set play from training that will live in World Cup lore. Down to 10 men after Jerome Boateng was given a second yellow card, Germany rallied for a 2-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday to suddenly revive its title defence thanks to a strike from Kroos that caught the Swedes by surprise and won’t soon be forgotten in Germany. “The fact Toni Kroos put it away is just incredible,” Reus said. “He’s shown that talent on previous occasions but really in this case it was practically the very last opportunity to win this match.” Kroos lined up for a free kick as if he was going for goal but just tapped the ball to Reus, who held it with his toe as the defenders paused. Kroos swung his right foot, curling the ball past a spinning Sebastian Larsson and over the outstretched hand of diving goalkeeper Robin Olsen. The Swedes watched the ball go in, mouths open in disbelief. The Germans ran to Kroos and erupted in emotional relief. “Happy of course. It was a tough game again today for us,” Kroos said. “We suffered. ... If you don’t score an early goal and we have the chances then it’s going to be difficult until the end. It was, but now of course we’re happy because I think we also deserved the victory.”

Coming off an opening loss to Mexico, Germany fell behind again when Kroos’ early mistake led to Ola Toivonen’s goal in the 32nd minute. Reus equalised in the 48th. A point for a draw would have been enough to stay alive for the knockout stage, but the Germans would have needed help on the final day. Now Germany has some control of what happens. Mexico leads Group F with six points, and Germany and Sweden both have three. Mexico faces Sweden and Germany takes on winless South Korea in the final group matches. “Of course this was a thriller, full of emotions and a rollercoaster ride right up until the final whistle,” Germany coach Joachim Loew said. Kane scored half of England’s goals yesterday in a 6-1 rout of Panama, the national team’s largest-ever margin of victory at the World Cup. “The third one is probably one of the luckiest ones of my career,” said Kane, who took the game ball to the locker room. “Sometimes you go through spells where you are scoring and sometimes it doesn’t fall for you. “Not many players get to score a hat trick in a World Cup.” Kane has scored a tournament-leading five goals at the World Cup in Russia, one more than Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku. He also has 18 for England’s national team, one more than Beckham. Not since the 4-2 victory over Germany in the 1966 final has England scored as many goals at the World Cup. Six minutes later, it was a done deal. The former AC Milan forward scored in the 78th minute, knocking the ball past two defenders standing on the goal line, to give Japan a 2-2 draw with Senegal yesterday at the World Cup. The 32-year-old Honda also scored at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He has 37 international goals in his career. “I believe I used substitutions very well in looking back,” said Japan coach Akira Nishino, who took over shortly before the tournament started. “Honda was moved from center to the wide side and he was very versatile at adapting to that position. “We really wanted to win, we wanted to equalise and also take the lead even though there was only a short period of time left.” The draw keeps both teams at the top of Group H ahead of their final matches. DJOKOVIC READY FOR WIMBLEDON DESPITE QUEEN’S FINAL DEFEAT By SAM JOHNSTON Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Less than a month after casting doubt over his participation at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic is heading for the tournament as a genuine title contender. Despite coming up just short in a 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 loss to Marin Cilic in the Queen’s Club final yesterday, Djokovic produced one of his best performances since missing the second half of 2017 with an elbow injury. Cilic saved a match point at 4-5 in the second set and then won six consecutive points from 4-1 down in the tiebreaker to level, before going on to win his second title at the Wimbledon warmup. Djokovic was left in far more optimistic mood than when he came off the court after a French Open quarter-final defeat to Marco Cecchinato on June 5. “Well, I’m there,” said Djokovic, when asked if he’s back to top form, singling out his earlier win

CAT ISLAND

PULHEIM, Germany (AP) — England’s Matt Wallace shot a 7-under 65 to hold off a record-breaking charge from Thorbjorn Olesen and win the BMW International Open yesterday. Wallace finished on 10-under 278 — just ahead of Olesen, Mikko Korhonen and 2008 winner Martin Kaymer, whose chances took a blow with a bogey on the 17th hole. Olesen had played himself into contention with the lowest round in tournament history, with nine birdies and an eagle for an 11-under 61. It was the lowest round of his European Tour career and it gave the Dane a three-shot lead before the final group had even teed off. Wallace turned in 34 but then made five birdies in seven holes from the turn to edge a shot past Olesen. He waited as Kaymer and Korhonen went close with rounds of 68 and 67, respectively. England’s Aaron Rai and Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard finished joint-fifth with rounds of 69.
