NOWN as a “small church with a big heart” after 150 years of existence, Coke Memorial Methodist Church MCCA has stood the test of time and remains a beacon of hope in the Fox Hill Community.
The church is celebrating its anniversary and all of its contribution over the past century and half this Sunday at 3pm under the theme: “As in Ages Past, our Praises will Continue”.” Highlighting the celebrations at the official anniversary service will be key-note speaker Rev Ruth Pratt who was born and raised in the Fox Hill Community. Rev Pratt now serves as Superintendent Minister in the French St Martin Circuit of the MCCA, a circuit on the island of St Maarten, following her several years in Dominica. Coke Memorial will also honor those who gave outstanding service and support to the development of the sanctuary and congregation over these many years. One highlight of the anniversary celebrations is that a memorial tribute to those who have passed away will be established. The church is also inviting the general public to attend its family evening on June 24 beginning at 6pm, when “pretty pajamas” will be worn as young people participate and lead activities for family and friends. impact on the community deserves to celebrated in a major way. “Our church is known as ‘the small church with the big heart’ because of our willingness to always support the community with our donations and involvement. Our doors are always open to the public and in recent times more persons have been stopping in to request things and prayer and the signing of documents by the pastor,” she said. One of the main goals of the ministry going forward is to spread its reach much more. “We seek this year not simply to increase our membership but to be more relevant to the Fox Hill community. We have responded during the pandemic and will continue to be ready to assist the community wherever there is a need,” Rev Demeritte said. As a part of the celebrations, the church will host a Give Away Day when it will be giving food items and clothing to the Fox Hill community from the church. This event will be held next month. Coke Memorial was established in June, 1872, and named for the Rev Thomas Coke, successor to John Wesley. Coke Memorial is a part of the Nassau Circuit of Methodist Churches in The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands Conference of the MCCA, and is widely known as the ‘small church with a big heart’ depicting its wide outreach to Fox Hill and also to many, many other projects throughout Nassau and the wider district. Holy Spirit Anglican Church celebrates its Feast of Title H
OLY Spirit Anglican Church celebrated its Feast of Title on June 5, 2022, which is known as Pentecost Sunday in the Christian community. During its morning services, the congregation was inspired by the preaching of Seminarian John Pinder. In the afternoon there was Solemn Evensong, Sermon and Benediction. The guest preacher was the Rev Canon Curtis Robinson, associate Priest of the Pro Cathedral of Christ the King Freeport, Grand Bahama. The congregation was not able to take part in the outdoor procession of witness, owing to inclement weather. However, the service was still Spirit-filled as the congregation sang melodiously in celebration of Jesus sending the Holy Spirit, the comforter, to earth to dwell amongst us. Also in attendance was the Rt Rev Laish Boyd, Bishop of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Island, who served as officiant at the benediction.

Gomez celebrates 50 years as bishop ARCHBISHOP Drexel Gomez is celebrating 50 years as a bishop this weekend. On June 24, he will reach the 50th anniversary of his consecration - a tremendous accomplishment as many clergy do not see 50 years of ordination. The Diocese will welcome several special visitors for the occasion, including: The Most Rev Dr Howard Gregory,

rally marking the 50th anniversary of the diocesan youth department at the carnival site at Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre. On Sunday, visiting bishops and spouses will worship at local parishes in the morning, before a 5pm patronal festival service at Christ Church Cathedral, with Archbishop Gregory as preacher.

A month of new Beginnings J
une is a month of many new beginnings. Consider the following: 1. GRADUATIONS: The ceremony marks the end of school days or college for graduates. Some will engage in higher levels of education; some will find jobs, hopefully in their field of interest or try to get work to pay bills. Unfortunately, there are others who will join
the statistics of the unemployed waiting for a response to one of the many resumes submitted. This is the beginning of more adult responsibilities and a sense of independence, especially if it involves living abroad. This is also the time to reflect seriously about parental sacrifices, contributing to nation building, and fostering meaningful relationships. This is a crucial transition period when life
choices made may have long-term consequences. For far too many, the structure and imposed discipline of school is replaced by license to lose their way. Mature mentors may offer guidance in the areas of career paths, spiritual maturity, personal development and family life. 2. WEDDINGS: This ceremony signals the move from singleness to marriage. If you
consider the “jumping the broom” ritual, it is a visible representation of taking initiative to move beyond one’s present state. As a single person, our main concern is to please ourselves, especially if we live alone with no major responsibilities. For many, this is the time to enjoy personal space, to spend or save at will, to answer to no-one as an adult, sometimes not even to God.
Marriage entails a shared life in a shared space, and involving consulting and negotiating with tact and diplomacy, hopefully. Thorough pre-marital counselling enables the couple to address a variety of topics to judge compatibility. As time goes on, they should become sufficiently familiar with each other’s thoughts and ways, that some level of harmony emerges. 3. HURRICANE SEASON: This is the beginning of too many months of watching and praying to be spared devastation. It is a time of preparation for the possibility of a natural disaster over which we have no control. It reminds us to follow instructions, create a plan and to purchase necessary supplies. It is totally unpredictable as to where we will be as a country come November, so with the dire warnings of an overactive season ahead, we can only hope for the best and prepare for the worst. 4. PENTECOST SEASON: In the Church, we celebrate the long season of Pentecost which is celebrated up to Advent in November. It is our time to consider spiritual growth

France rules against burkini swimwear for religious reasons PARIS Associated Press FRANCE'S top administrative court ruled on Tuesday against allowing body-covering "burkini" swimwear in public pools for religious reasons, arguing that it violates the principle of government neutrality toward religion. While worn by only a small number of people in France, the head-to-ankle burkini draws intense political debate in the country. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin hailed the ruling by the Council of State as a "victory for secularism". Some Muslim women decried it as unfairly targeting their faith and their bodies, and based on outdated misconceptions about Islam. The city of Grenoble, led by a mayor from the Greens party, voted last month to allow women to wear burkinis in public pools after campaigning by local activists. The city also voted to allow women to swim topless, as part of a broader relaxation of swimwear rules.

The prefect, or top government official, for the Grenoble region blocked the burkini decision, arguing it ran counter to France's secular principles. The Council of State upheld the prefect's move Tuesday, saying in a statement that the Grenoble vote was made "to satisfy a religious demand" and "harms the neutrality of public services". The ruling was the first under a controversial law, championed
by President Emmanuel Macron, aimed at protecting "republican values" from what his government calls the threat of religious extremism. Clothing rules in public pools in France are strict, for what authorities say are reasons of hygiene: caps are required, and baggy swim trunks or other voluminous clothing is generally banned. Wetsuits are not allowed in many pools too, as are some sun-protection suits.
A few other cities and towns allow burkinis in public pools. The city of Rennes is among them, but its decision was aimed at loosening swimwear rules and not based on religious reasons. The Grenoble mayor argued that women should be able to wear what they want and express their religious conviction in pools like in the street. Opponents of the burkini – who include local officials from the far right but also the left
-- argued that the swimwear represents the oppression of women and a potential gateway to Islamic radicalism. Six years ago, the Council of State struck down a local burkini ban, amid shock and anger after some Muslim women were ordered to remove bodyconcealing garments on French Riviera beaches. For Fatima Bent of Muslim feminist group Lallab, Tuesday's ruling is "a clear step backwards" that will further isolate women who cover their heads and bodies in public. While some Muslim women are forced by male relatives to cover themselves, she said, "Muslim women are not homogenous. (French authorities) look at Muslim women through a single prism." She blamed a leftover colonial-era "fixation with the body of Muslim women by politicians who want to control them". Grenoble's decision about swimming topless has not been threatened in the courts.

he Ebenezer Baptist Church in Exuma held a celebration for all fathers on Sunday. The fathers of Ebenezer were well catered to during their Father’s Day service by Women’s president Karen Winters and her team. Vanessa Smith, Ebenezer church member and president of Prestige Business Solutions, said: “The fathers were served apple cider in glasses as they worshipped during the service and were gifted shirts that read, ‘Blessed Day’, as well as complimentary customised bags, face masks, tumblers, lunch certificates by Ole Snapper Bites and so much more.” She said the church’s pastor, Rev Stephen Smith, took a unique approach during his sermon titled “ Fathers, What Are Our Children Saying About Us?”. “Smith emphasised the importance of fathers following God’s command to love, provide for and really take care of their families and homes so that children can speak well of them. If we want a peaceful home, we have to invite God in, he said. He also encouraged fathers to affirm, build up and to support their children. Smith said, ‘fathers we must pray for our children, with our child, and teach them the power of seeking God in all that they do’,” said Ms Smith. Under the leadership of Rev Stephen Smith, recogniing fathers is nothing out of the ordinary at the church. During the pandemic in 2020, he encouraged fathers to teach their children to be good examples, to honor their father and mother, to take responsibility, to work hard, to love and respect others and most importantly to love God. He said: “Fathers, we have one of the greatest responsibilities to be good role models to our children, let us love our wives so that our children can emulate us in a good way. Let us pray always. Get on our knees to seek God’s guidance and lead our homes bringing All Glory to God,” he said.
