FTER months of lockdown and virtual services it was a great feeling for believers to be back inside the four walls of their respective churches this past Sunday. Things may have not been the same as precoronavirus, but even with the social distancing practices in place, God’s presence was felt, various church members told Tribune Religion. “I must admit, I have adapted to getting myself ready to sit in the comfort of my home every Sunday and tune into not one, but several church services via their virtual platforms. However, this past Sunday was the first time I attended a church service in its physical form and it felt really good. I don’t attend church as much as I would want to, even before the virus, but when I walked in it felt so heart-warming to experience my Lord and Saviour in this way. I do hope though churches keep up their social media pages for persons who would like to tune in and maybe could not make it to the service. I am here for all the praise in church, or anywhere I am,” said Christine Fox. FATHER’S Day falls during the season in the church when the Sundays are numbered as they follow after Pentecost Sunday. It is such a blessing to be in the presence of a father who is filled with the power of God and who is a loving presence in his home. The Gospel of John describes the commissioning of the frightened disciples, who cower behind closed door, until the Lord appears, and breathes the Holy Spirit into their spirits (John 20:19-23 NRSV): When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” What if every father in the Bahamas considered himself as one sent by God to speak the language of love and prayer to his children and to inspire other young men? What if every child had a godly father? What a wonderful world this would be. To walk beside, or behind, a man who modelled gentleness and joy, strength and peace, who spoke truth in love, would be an incredible daily experience. First of all, to have him in the home on a regular and consistent basis would be the first blessing. Then to have him attentive and available to listen, to play and share wise thoughts every day, would be a delight that is indescribable. We are looking for you to mentor and nurture our nation’s children who through no fault of their own find themselves “fatherless.” Sometimes, it is death, divorce, or abandonment, that leaves them grieving and wounded. When this hurt continues unchecked, heart-broken boys may grow to become hard-hearted men. Acts 2:1-8 relates the well-known version of the Pentecost story, highlighting the many dialects and languages that the
disciples were able to speak to the astonishment of the many Jewish visitors in Jerusalem: Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?” What if every father came to realise that he possesses the language of the male perspective that his female and male children
need to hear throughout their lives? To comprehend the power of praise and encouragement is an awesome discovery of what it means to nurture a child and mould a life. Every father with the discernment to understand the difference that his presence makes is like a world famous artist, who brings to light the hidden essence of life in a work of art. He controls the spiritual experience of God as Father by the image he portrays of fatherhood, making it so much easier to love God, if he is patient and loving. Words of forgiveness, of justice, and mercy, spoken freely as a part of the process of discipline with its rewards and punishments when necessary, are unforgettable. Tender touches, affectionate embraces, hearty laughs, firm grips, strong shoulders are just some of the ways that a man can be a holy man in his home. Men of The Bahamas who are excellent fathers we thank God for you. Those of you who are on shaky ground for any reason, we pray for you: 1. To decide to walk the path of integrity from this day forward 2. To seek help for a violent temper or addictive dependence 3. To fall in love again with the wife of your youth and the mother of your children 4. To refrain from creating a new life if there is no committed marital “nest” in which to receive the little one 5. To pay your child support to assist your children for their sakes 6. To give up a life of crime 7. To learn from a godly man with a loving compassionate spirit how to celebrate the gift of fatherhood as a call and ministry We need you more than ever to bless every child with the gift of a father’s love. FATHER’S DAY AND THE BIBLE BY CARLOS SPENCER EVERY year we set aside a special day to honour fathers, grandfathers and other paternal figures in society. This usually takes place on the third Sunday in June. Families and friends gather together to enjoy fun and food, often with church worship as a highlight of the day. Pastors and others remind fathers of their role and responsibility in the family, and scripture provides ample source for such advice and guidance. Malachi 4:6 (KJV) states: “And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.” The word of God further states, “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.” (Psalm 103:13) In short, in the same way that parents are kind to their children, the Lord is kind to those who worship him. Perhaps one of the most powerful passages in the Bible directed to fathers is found in Ephesians 6:4: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” This point is similarly made in Colossians 3:21: “Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.”
RELIGION We are provided with further insight in Proverbs 3:11-12: “My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.” Translated, do not look away from God or become bitter when he corrects you. God corrects everyone he loves, in the same way a father corrects a favourite child. A popular passage in scripture concerns the prodigal son and is to be found in Luke 15:18-24. This story demonstrates that despite the recklessly wasteful nature of a son, the love of a father is sacrosanct, and prevails even in difficult times for the son. Scripture again provides direction in Proverbs 23:22: “Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not they mother when she is old.” Verse 24 states: “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.” Hebrews chapter 12 gives us guidance on the need for correction by God, as we also endure correction by our fathers (verses 7 and 9). Moreover, God’s love for us is made clear in 1 John 3:1. This passage states “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” Awesome! We should reflect upon how much God loves us. God’s love for us is so great that he allows us to be called his children, which we are indeed. Unfortunately, the people of this world did not know who Christ is, therefore they do not know who we are. Very powerful scripture. In closing, I draw attention to Proverbs 20:7: “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” Good people live as God intended, and God blesses their children who follow their example. Being a father “PLEASE, be gentle with the boy!” These were the parting words of a concerned father to the commander of the army of King David as they marched out the gates of Jerusalem. King David’s son, Prince Absalom, had started a military coup in Jerusalem. He was coming at his father’s throne. He had been busy mustering his own forces while he very diplomatically moved his father’s loyalists to his own cause. His political subtlety led him to sweettalk the citizens by offering them a superior administration. He would say to a prospective follower who had a problem: “Look, your claims are valid, and proper, but there is no representative of the King to hear you.” Then Absalom would add: “If only I were appointed judge in the land. Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that he gets justice!” Absalom had gained a big following. So he decided to challenge his father with his military force to achieve a takeover of the throne from his dad. Absalom and his forces were encamped nearby the Jerusalem border, so King David’s military leaders – Generals Joab Abishai and Ittai – decided to mount an offensive to end the uprising led by Absalom. As they were leaving him behind in the city, King David requested particularly that they would handle his son very gently. Apparently King David made his request well known. Even the troops heard his words to all the commanders. In the forest of Ephraim the armies engaged in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, so fierce was the conflict that 20,000 casualties were suffered by the army loyal to

KING David mourns the death of his son Absalom. Absalom. David’s army slaughtered them mercilessly. Absalom himself confronted his
father’s army commanders. And while riding through the thicket on his own mule, his thick mat of hair became caught in the branches and he was left suspended in the air, hanging by his hair. The news was brought to General Joab: “Young Absalom is hanging from an oak tree. His hair is caught in the thicket!” The messenger made it clear to Joab that despite Absalom’s defenselessness he could not pay him enough to hunt the boy, because he heard what King David had desired: “Do not hurt my son!” However, General Joab saw this as a good opportunity to get at David. So Joab himself took three long narrow javelins and plunged them with violent rage into Absalom’s suspended body. Then ten of Joab’s military attendants surrounded the helpless Absalom and, with further attacks, killed him.
They took the body of Absalom, threw it into a big pit in the forest, and piled up a high heap of rocks on top of it. Meanwhile, King David was sitting by the gates of the city anxiously waiting for news of the battle, especially the situation of his son. When a runner arrived from the army, King David asked: “Is the young man Absalom safe?” He did not inquire of the battle, only of his son. Such was the concern of a worried father; “how is it with my son?” Finally the news broke that his son had been killed. “The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: ‘O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!’’’ (2 Samuel 18:33 NIV) So David ascended the city walls and in the sight of all people he began a public wail: “Oh, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you!” Such is a father’s lot; so often to grieve for a wayward son. In David’s case, he had failed Absalom. He failed to discipline him, he failed to confront him when he should have. Now he reaped the sowing of such a poor, fatherly responsibility. His weeping came too late. Absalom died in open rebellion against the throne and power of God. He died in the very act of being an outlaw to God. No wonder that David moaned. There is no tragedy so great, no failure so glaring, as that of a wayward father who allows his son to be so led astray. So many hundreds of Bahamian young men are victims of a father’s neglect and unconcern. To all you who are fathers, on this Father’s Day, why not resolve to renew your dedication to the task of being a good father. Your children need it. And what better way than to begin your own life with God as master and guide. Surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ and let Him give you the grace and strength to become the father you ought to be. How about it?

‘Good fathers are key in battling societal ills’ BY PASTOR CARYLE PEART SUNDAY will be celebrated as Father’s Day, but no one really expects a bevy of activity or fanfare. A few vendors, if any, will be strewn along the roadways selling their wares and traffic will be free flowing. For the paltry few good fathers who may be feted, they may even have to foot the bill themselves. When did we get here? How can this situation be turned around? Why did you become a father? Was it to show your deadbeat dad that you are better than he is (was) at this fathering thing? To pass your name along? Or was it because you have oftentimes heard that you are not a man until you can impregnate a woman? Whatever your reason is to become a father, or whether you can(not) find a reason, the fact remains that you are a father and there are responsibilities that come with being a father. The very day you became a father you gave up your individuality. It is no longer ‘me’, but rather ‘me and my child(ren)’. What traits/values are you passing on to your children? Will they remember you as the negative father – the abuser, the ‘cusser’, the womaniser, the absentee parent, the parent who never sacrifices. Or as the positive father – the listener, the provider, the priest, the protector, man of his word, of godly character, firm but loving? The Caribbean man is at a grave disadvantage when it comes to fathering because of our colonial history. During slavery the man was taken from woman to woman to deposit his seed to produce offspring to continue the work on the plantation. He was never given the chance to be the provider, protector, or the priest. He was simply a seed donor. Now that slavery has been abolished, this behaviour has continued. It is even glorified in our musical heritage. The song “Nuff Gal” by dancehall king Beenie Man comes to mind. A father is a very noble calling. I urge you fathers who have not signed for your child(ren) to do so. If you have doubts, then do a paternity test, but do not allow that child to grow up in a world where they feel unwanted and unloved, which

often leads to bitterness and resentment. No excuse can or must be accepted for your inaction as a father. There are many model fathers around, some of whom never had a father in their lives, who can be observed and emulated. Fathering takes great effort, time and money. However, when done right it is a rewarding job. The Bible refers to God as father. When we as fathers fool around we cause many in the world to not want anything to do with our Father God. They cannot imagine coming to Father God after being mistreated by their earthly father. A family feels secure when the father is doing his job. A child loves to know that there is safety in daddy’s arms. It is quite disheartening, however, that the devil has crept into the hearts of a few fathers who have abused their children verbally, physically, and sadly, sexually. God intended for fathers to raise godly offspring who will lead productive lives
and make positive and lasting contributions to their communities, country, and the world on a broader spectrum. It is God’s will that fathers instruct their children in the right way and to carry on his legacy. For this to happen the father must be present and there must be a father/ child bond. Since the dawn of the feminist movement there has been a deliberate attack on masculinity. Masculinity is vilified and femininity continues to be glorified. Do not get me wrong, I do believe that the woman needs to be heard and given her right place in society. However, we have swung the pendulum too far back and what we are now reaping are terrible rewards of that action. There are women who just need a child. They are only concerned about getting pregnant and could care less about the father since they can easily provide financially for the child because of their economic standing. This ideology is a
serious threat to the stability of society and must be halted. A father’s role can never ever be taken over by a mother. Mothers must mother and fathers must father, which are completely different roles. It does not matter how many books the mother has read or how many earned college degrees she has earned, she can never ever father her own child. The prevalence of this behaviour has only encouraged our men to be careless and the seed donor mentality to persist. It will also increase the number of people who are already on a quest to find out who their father is; a knowledge that they want to possess as this gives them a sense of identity. If God intended for one of the sexes to play dual roles there would not be any need for the male’s sperm to fertilize the female’s egg. Women are not parthenogenetic (the ability to reproduce without the male). We need both sexes to reproduce. That is what God intended. Parenting is so complex that God has assigned it to two people – a mother and a father. Tons of research has shown the traumatic effects on the society caused by an absentee father. A quick search on any web search engine will reveal that a child with an absentee father is five times more likely to commit suicide, to be incarcerated, to experience more social and mental behavioural issues, to divorce and have relationship issues, increased rates of depression and anxiety, decreased education levels and increased drop-out rates, and substantially increased rates of substance abuse. With this information I would imagine that those who are tasked with fixing the social ills of our society would be lobbying to save the fathers! Where are the lobbyist groups? We have been trying to fight crime and fix societal problems, but the answer lies with our fathers. ROM how to get out of an move past unhealthy relationships, to how to stay focused on one’s purpose and just conquering daily challenges in general, it is all covered in Pastor Kenneth Adderley’s new book, “52 Life-Changing Strategies to Successful Living”. The idea for the book was inspired by Pastor Adderley’s personal experiences, including his marriage of 29 years, his roles as a father and senior pastor, seminar teacher, conference speaker, and as a coach empowering young people through the sport of baseball. The book, he told Tribune Religion, is a guide to taking life’s experiences and turning them into stepping stones on the path to success. Bahamians may have heard some of the anecdotes and advice by listening to the sermons of Pastor Adderley, who has been the senior pastor at Temple of the Word Ministries for the past 20 years, but now everyone can have his teachings readily to hand. “All my familiarities with life, motivational teachings and team-building notes were placed in this handy text. (It) is an
PASTOR KENNETH ADDERLEY easy-to-read, simply written book, yet is profound in its implications. It can be used as a personal weekly devotional, a guide for cell groups, or as a manual for team-building and empowerment for employees,” said the marriage and
relationship counsellor. Pastor Adderley said he found it vital to document many of his teachings and life experiences in a book because it his way of sharing the wisdom he has gained to benefit others. “Many persons that I come in contact with through counselling individuals, married couples, parents, teachers, churches, and organisations want to know different strategies to deal and overcome some of the problems, crises and issues they are presently facing. People want to know about life experiences; it makes it real and true,” he said. Pastor Adderley is a marriage officer and a Justice of the Peace. He has travelled extensively throughout the US, the Caribbean, South America, and Africa, establishing KAM (Kenneth Adderley Ministries) in these locations, including in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he provides motivational teachings and empowerment development. A former professional baseball player, and a baseball coach for over 10 years, he and his wife Bernadette have two children, Kennisha and Kyle.
BELIEVERS EMBASSY DRIVE-IN CHURCH SERVICES ARE A SUCCESS EVEN as the country slowly reopens, Believers Embassy International said it is continuing its popular drive-in church services. Believers Embassy launched its drivein service, held on church grounds on Carmichael Road, on May 31. More
than hundred congregants attended and enjoyed that first service from their vehicles. Pastor Stephen Munroe said he was guided by God to expand the church beyond its four walls. “I believe in being obedient. When I
receive direction from God, I follow his instructions. Since we started the drivein service we have seen an increase in attendance each week. BEI ambassadors and visitors are able to sit in their personal vehicles to receive the word of God and participate in the service. What is
most important and rewarding is the fact that souls are being saved every week,” he said. The church will continue hosting the drive-in services on Sundays at 10am until further notice. BEI also hosts a Monday night live virtual service at 7.30pm.
