Team Bahamas selected for Caribbean Cup By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net WITH a combination of players from New Providence and Grand Bahama and a number of collegians, the Bahamas Basketball Federation has selected the team to represent the Bahamas at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation’s FIBA Women’s Caribbean Cup. The team, headed by interim coach Wayde Watson, is scheduled to leave town on Wednesday for the tournament, scheduled for June 17-21 in Paramaribo, Suriname. They were announced to the media at a press conference on Monday in the foyer of the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. The team is made up of Taniel Poitier, Valerie Nesbit, Joette Fernander, Brea Forbes (Grand Bahama), Arlia Greene (Grand

Bahama), Tracy Lewis, Latoya Rolle, Ashley Moss, Britenique Harrison, Pamela Bethel, Taronya Wildgoose (Grand Bahama) and Shalonda Neely. “I’m very comfortable with the make-up of the team,” said Watson, who will be assisted by Varel Clarke-Davis and Anton Francis. “I think we have a group of ladies who have shown that they are truly committed to the Bahamas Basketball Federation and its basketball programme. “I want to publicly applaud them and commend them for their effort that they have done because for someone who is considered a rigid task master when it comes to coaching, they have all responded very positively. So, at the end of the day, I think the make-up of the team is very good, the attitudes are very good and the commitment to the national team programme is very good.”

Watson, who is filling in for women’s national coach Yolett McPhee-McCuinn, who is unable to travel as she has taken on a new coaching job at Ole Mississippi University, commended his coaching staff and predicted that they “hope to be our best as we travel to Suriname for this Caribbean World Cup Qualifier.” Looking at the make-up of their team, Watson said they assembled a good core of youth and speed in the guards in the backcourt and they have a dynamic and experienced frontcourt of forwards and centres in Shalonda Neely, Britinique Harrison, Ashley Moss and Tracy Lewis. Clarke-Davis, a former national team player, was a member of the last senior women’s team that won the tournament two years ago as an assistant to McPhee-McCuinn. “We have a talented bunch of young ladies,” Clarke-Davis said.

“Our goal is to come back with a medal. Over the past five weeks, these girls have been working very hard and we are confident that they will do very well.” Team Bahamas will play in Group A against Cuba at 4:30pm on Sunday, June 17 and the Virgin Islands on Monday at the same time. The first and second place teams from Group A and B, comprised of Guyana, Barbados and Dominica, will advance to the semi-final playoff and final June 20-21. The top three teams will qualify for the Centro Basket August 20-24 in Puerto Rico. Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Michael Pintard, thanking Courtyard Marriott for coming on board as a major sponsor, congratulated the ladies on making the team and the coaching staff.

BURROWS HELPS TEAM TO GAME 1 VICTORY IN THE FINALS By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net JARAUN Burrows and FOS-Provence Basket are one step closer to a championship title and league promotion after a game one win in the LNB French Pro B Division Finals. Burrows was limited to just 17 foul-plagued minutes and scored six points in Fos-Sur-Mer Provence Basket’s 72-68 win over Rouen as the series got underway yesterday. Game two is set for Thursday, June 14. Roanne won both previous matchups between the teams during the regular season. On December 8, they won 76-71 and on March 20, they scored a decisive 99-64 blowout win.

‘Our goal is to come back with a medal’ By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net espite some familiar names missing, members of the women’s national team selected to participate in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation’s FIBA Women’s Caribbean Cup feel that what they lack in size, they hope to make up with their heart and speed. The team, announced yesterday in the foyer of the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium, are scheduled to leave town on Wednesday where they will compete in Paramaribo, Suriname, June 17-21. It was revealed by BBF first vice president Mario Bowleg that they had to go with the team selected after some of the players wanted to be paid to participate on the team. “The Bahamas Basketball Federation is a non-profit organisation that seeks to obtain funding from corporate sponsors and the government,” Bowleg said. “We are not USA Basketball, we are not

Canada Basketball, so we can only provide stipends for our players from which our pocket can provide. We do our best to ensure that our players are very well insured.” However, Bowleg said they can only provide assistance to players as is available and they will not allow players to make demands on them when they have coaches, who make the commitment to work with the team without being fully compensated. Wayde Watson is the team’s head coach, assisted by Varel Davis and Anton Francis. The team’s manager is Lavardis Johnson and the trainer is George Burrows. Watson admitted that there are others who could and should have made the team, but he and the coaching staff selected the best team out of the players who came out to practice. “If we had those players who were committed to the team, yes, we could have had them on the team,” Watson said. “But those young ladies have been committed and they are being rewarded by going to Suriname.”

A lot of us have been playing together since the junior level so we have good team chemistry,” said Harrison, a centre. “I feel we will go out there and give it our best in Suriname,” she added. Moss, home from school in Canada, said although there’s a lot of focus on what they are lacking, they have been working extremely hard as a cohesive unit. “What one person lacks, the next person brings, so you can’t say height is our downfall or shooting,” she said. “All of us make up one team and we accept the challenge to conquer, or at least try to. “That is our goal and our mission and we are going to try bring it (title) back.”

As a point guard on the team, Poitier said she likes the camaraderie displayed by each member on the team. “We have a lot of speed and so I think this team is going to be very competitive,” she said. “Don’t mind the size, small axe cut down big trees, so we will be using our speed to our advantage in the tournament.” Nesbit said as another point guard, a lot of responsibility will be placed on the backcourt and she’s eager to make her contribution. “I have to be a big leader for the team because I am an extension of the coach,” she stressed. “So if I do what I have to do as a leader, we will do very well in the tournament.” One of three players from Grand Bahama, Forbes, a shooting guard, said she’s confident that with the hard work and dedication that they all put into practice over the past five weeks, there’s nothing they can’t accomplish. “We just have to go out there and make it happen,” she summed up.

In yesterday’s 10-4 win for the Athletics, the 17-year-old outfielder went 3-4 with four RBI, scored three runs and added one stolen base. In his first at-bat, Mackey’s two-RBI single gave the Athletics an early lead. He would go on to steal second but was left stranded in scoring position after the Red Sox ended the inning with a strikeout. Courtney Smith and Keithron Moss began their first seasons with the DSL Rangers1 in the Dominican Republic, their first appearance for the Rangers since they signed during the last international signing period. Smith got the first minor league hit of his career in his second appearance. In an 8-2 loss to the DSLCubs1, Smith entered the game as a designated hitter and went 1-1 with a run

LAMAR Watkins scored the tying run and D’Juan Seymour got the winning run in the seventh inning as the Commando Security Truckers came from behind to nip the BTC Elite Warriors 12-11 as the New Providence Softball Association continued its regular season in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday night. Watkins led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch that got Seymour on base. After Philip Rolle singled to place the two runners in scoring position, Watkins and Seymour came home on an error that allowed Watson to reach safely at first. Watson was left stranded on second as Garfield Bethel struck out, but the damage had already been done. The Truckers scored three runs in the second, third and sixth inning before they pulled it off in the seventh. Seymour went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in (RBI) and scored as many times, while Watson was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Truckers. Philip Rolle was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. Miguel Hanna was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Steven Russell was 1-for-4 with a run scored. BTC led off with three runs in the first, two in the second, four in the fourth and two in the fifth. But when it counted the most, they got shut out in the sixth and seventh innings. Sherman Ferguson just missed the cycle with a double, triple and home run in his 3-for-3 plate appearance, driving in three runs and scoring as many times. Jordan Gibson was 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored and Navardo Gilbert was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Clarke got the win on the mound and Jeffery Woodside was tagged with the loss. More offseason rumblings from Lakerville NOW, before we get started, bare in mind that these are rumours, they only carry so much weight. With that out of the way, it is has been rumoured recently, and post this year’s NBA Finals, that both of Magic Johnson‘s superstar free agent targets are considered to be cooling off on the notion of coming to Los Angeles. Yes, apparently Paul George allegedly quite content to stay in OKC alongside Russell Westbrook for one more season. Forward the tape to now, according to ‘reliable sources,’ apparently LeBron James isn’t smitten either. This is what ESPN‘s Chris Haynes had to say when speaking on the “TK Show” on ESPN. “Houston has been linked a lot. I’ve been told that Philly of course, that’s legit. The Lakers are still in play but they’re not as hot as it was before, but you’re going to grant Magic Johnson a meeting. That’s just, you’re gonna do that. And you’re gonna listen. So they have things in play, the Lakers have been setting up for two years for this summer.” Now before you run hot on me, let’s look at this logically and rationally. With the way the NBA Finals went, and another ‘L’, LeBron has every reason to ditch the Cleveland Cavaliers, again. Getting him to the open market is the first step. ‘Test Your Drug’ app hits the Anti-Doping Commission website By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas AntiDoping Commission (BADC) seeks to repurpose its profile in order for athletes and the general public to get a greater understanding and appreciation of what the organisation does. Newly appointed executive director of the BADC, Petra Haven, said the group continues to implement a series of initiatives including an updated website, community outreach and educational campaign. The commission’s site http://www.bahamasadc. org/ has become an accessible information hub complete with a complete list of prohibited drugs, the anti-doping sports act and a “Test Your Drug” app that allows users to input the name of their product in question and receive an immediate response on whether it is fit for legal consumption. “One of the things we wanted to do was a digital information hub. We wanted persons to have access to the information at any hour of the day, no matter where they are, once you have access to the Internet you are able to educate and protect yourself. We want them on the go, or out of the country to be able to find any and everything they need to know. “Even though they have access to us within the office, the website is now our first point of contact,” she said. “We also needed to have something appealing to millennials. Many athletes still have difficulty understanding the full scope of what doping is. It’s not just testing and we want them to grasp that and have all of the information

necessary to make responsible decisions for their supplementation and nutrition.” According the commission, their primary function is to facilitate the control and prevention of doping in sports, including: implementing the policies and programmes of the Government against doping in sports; doing all things necessary to comply with and implement the articles of the Anti-Doping Code and making rules for controlling the occurrence of doping in sports.

with the sporting federations when they are having events, practices, anywhere athletes gather – we want the commission to have a presence outside of testing just to build relationships. People always have questions about this topic of anti-doping because it is something that affects everyone. So an issue this wide ranging deserves the attention of the entire community.” The basic framework for the commission’s work is “to protect the athletes’ fundamental right to participate in doping-free sport and thus promote health, fairness and equality for athletes nationwide.” Additionally, the current environment and emerging trends in the areas of education, science, medicine, international trafficking of doping substances, and investigations as well as WADA’s governance and operational activities provide the context for the objectives and strategies of the commission. “There are certain things that we must have in place. We need to have standard procedures that need to be in place and we need to have those for our organisation. We need to ensure our athletes know they are in or out of a registered testing pool. Things as simple as that we always need to make sure we have in place because that is a part of our compliance,” Haven said. “We want everyone to be involved in the process and if you have everyone involved in the process it makes things run smoother. When you look at what our small country has been able to achieve on the international stage we have to protect the integrity of those achievements and our reputation of fair play.”

Still, don’t count out the Lakers and Magic, who I’m sure have already drawn up the perfect pitch. DRAFT RUMOURS Although they only own the No. 25 and No. 47 picks, the Lakers have a knack for turning nonlottery picks into quality talent. (See Jordan Clarkson, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart) Here’s a hot rumour regarding what Magic and Co. may do with the 25th pick in this year’s NBA Draft. Lakers trade up for Michael Porter Jr. There’s this crazy notion right now that Michael Porter Jr could suffer a disastrous tumble on draft night. ESPN recently had him mocked to the Washington Wizards at No. 15 despite the Missouri product clearly possessing top-five talent/potential (via NBC Sports Washington).

If Porter’s back injury and uncertainty surrounding it forces teams to look elsewhere during the lottery, allowing the outstanding forward prospect to still be on the board at No. 15 or possibly a pick or two earlier at No. 13 or No.14, expect the Lakers to spring into action, trying to get a deal done for the multi-talented forward. In order to move up for Porter the Lakers give up the No. 25 pick and Kyle Kuzma. It’s a terribly high price to pay, but the upgrade in talent is tremendous. Porter gives the Lakers a truly elite talent to pair with Lonzo Ball, and Brandon Ingram and whoever else they manage to sign in free agency. The departure of Kuzma sucks, but that’s the price the Lakers will have to pay in order to return to relevance in the NBA. Scherzer takes rare loss, Richard flirts with no-no WASHINGTON (AP) — Brandon Crawford went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer, and the San Francisco Giants dealt Max Scherzer his first loss in more than two months, defeating the Washington Nationals 2-0 on Sunday. After Pablo Sandoval walked leading off the fourth, Crawford homered into the second deck in right for his eighth of the season. He singled in the first and doubled in the sixth and eighth innings. Since May 1, Crawford is hitting an MLB-best .439 (58-for-132) and has raised his average to .338. Scherzer (10-2) had won nine straight decisions since his last loss on April 4. He allowed two runs and four hits while striking out nine over seven innings. Derek Holland (4-6), a 10-year veteran facing Washington for the first time, allowed three hits and two walks in five innings as five pitchers combined for the three-hitter. Hunter Strickland pitched the ninth for his 13th save. PADRES 3, MARLINS 1 MIAMI (AP) — Clayton Richard became the latest pitcher to flirt with the first no-hitter in San Diego Padres’ history, losing his bid with two outs in the seventh inning against the Miami Marlins. The Padres are the only team in the majors that has never thrown a no-hitter. They have played 7,881 games since starting out in 1969. Last month, Jordan Lyles was perfect for 7 1/3 innings until Colorado’s Trevor Story singled. Frazier went deep for the second consecutive night to help the Mets prevent a Subway Series sweep at Citi Field. INDIANS 9, TIGERS 2 DETROIT (AP) — Corey Kluber continued his dominance of the American League Central, allowing two runs in eight innings as the Cleveland Indians topped the Tigers. Kluber (10-2) is 5-0 with a 0.76 ERA in five starts against division rivals this season and has won his last 11 decisions against teams from the AL Central. He allowed five hits and struck out eight without walking a batter. Melky Cabrera and Erik Gonzalez each drove in three runs for Cleveland, which expanded its divisional lead to five games over the Tigers. MARINERS 5, RAYS 4 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Right fielder Mitch Haniger threw out Johnny Field at the plate to end the game, and the Seattle Mariners held off the Tampa Bay Rays for their 17th win in 22 games. Field tried to score from first on a twoout, bloop single by Carlos Gomez. James Paxton struck out 10 and Kyle Seager hit a go-ahead home run for Seattle. DODGERS 7, BRAVES 2 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Max Muncy homered in his third straight game, Logan Forsythe and Enrique Hernandez also connected, and the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves. Muncy has 12 home runs, matching the total he hit last year while spending the whole season at TripleA Oklahoma City. He hit a solo drive in the fifth inning to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 4-2, and drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Without Lionel Messi, would Argentina even be going to the World Cup? The team’s destiny is more closely tied to the Barcelona forward than ever before. There are plenty of doubts for coach Jorge Sampaoli ahead of the tournament in Russia. Defender Javier Mascherano is reaching the end of his career, while striker Sergio Aguero and midfielder Lucas Biglia both experienced injury problems recently. Paulo Dybala is yet to deliver for his country despite all the promise on display at Juventus.

Much of the squad also carries the burden of mass disappointment, following three successive losses in finals: 2014 World Cup, 2015 Copa America and 2016 Copa America. Argentina secured its spot in Russia in the last round of South American qualifiers thanks to Messi’s hat trick against Ecuador. The deficiencies in the team were underscored in a 6-1 loss to Spain in a friendly in March. The 58-year-old Sampaoli took over in June 2017 to replace Edgardo Bauza when Argentina was on the verge of missing a World Cup spot. Sampaoli was never a footballer and didn’t manage a first division club at home, developing his career in Peru and then

But a year later, Chile won its first-ever title while hosting the Copa America tourney. In qualifying for the 2018 edition, Croatia was robust in defence but lacked consistency in attack. Only 15 goals were scored, the second lowest after Ireland among the top two finishers from all qualifying groups in Europe. Whenever an opponent scored, Croatia could find no way to win.

NIGERIA STRONG AND CALM UNDER ROHR, FOR NOW By GERALD IMRAY AP Sports Writer COACH Gernot Rohr has restored stability to Nigeria heading into the World Cup. The German brought a sense of calm to a team that went through five coaches in two years

following the 2014 tournament in Brazil. Africa’s most populous nation flew through qualifying and was the first team to qualify from the region, seeing off continental champion Cameroon. Nigeria then showcased its qualities by winning a friendly last

year against Argentina, its final Group D opponent at the World Cup. Nigeria has an array of attacking options. These include Premier League talent in Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa.

The challenge is to ensure the defence is similarly strong and the squad doesn’t get sidetracked by off-the-field issues that have undermined previous campaigns at major tournaments. At the 2014 World Cup, it was a disagreement over player payment that almost caused the

team to go out on strike ahead of the last 16 game against France, which Nigeria lost. Rohr will be hoping there’s no repeat, as will the Nigeria Football Federation, which has made a point recently of publicising the fact that the players are now paid on time.

Any neutrals looking for a team to get behind at the World Cup shouldn’t look any further than Iceland, a feel-good story of international soccer that just keeps on giving. With about 330,000 inhabitants, the Nordic country is comfortably the smallest to ever qualify for the tournament. Two years ago, Iceland reached the European Championship for the first time, too, and got to the quarter-finals — famously eliminating England along the way. The Icelandic fairytale is made more charming by its

vociferous and passionate fans, who made the “thunderclap” war chant the soundtrack of that summer in France in 2016. Don’t be surprised if it has the same impact in Russia. Adding to the legend is the team’s coach, Heimar Hallgrimsson, who combines managing the national team with running a dental surgery clinic in a small town in Iceland. And a hard-working, selfless group of mostly unheralded players who are simply living out their dream in front of the watching world. Giving the Icelanders more global attention is the identity of their first opponent in Group D: Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

LUKAKU ON TARGET AGAIN AS BELGIUM DEMOLISHES COSTA RICA 4-1 BRUSSELS (AP) — A rampant Romelu Lukaku scored twice and set up a third goal as Belgium closed its World Cup preparations in style by demolishing Costa Rica 4-1 yesterday. Dries Mertens opened the scoring for the Red Devils before striker Lukaku took his international tally to 36 in 69 matches with a volley and header either side of halftime.
