Evelyn Neill, R.N., 1943-2020 Evelyn Neill, a wee Scottish lassie, was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1943. She went on to become a registered nurse and served as a midwife in London early in her career, riding her bike from patient to patient. About fifty years ago, she came to The Bahamas, sight unseen, to work at PMH in the A&E department. She spent most of her life in Nassau and truly embraced Bahamian culture. She loved Bahamian food, especially grits, Jumper Brothers bread, and fudge. We had to be silent when ZNS news came on at 7pm each evening and she would drive all over Nassau to get the Thursday papers. She was a compassionate and dedicated nurse, who loved helping others. Throughout her lifetime, she worked at Elizabeth Estates clinic, Fleming St. clinic and Green Turtle Cay clinic, as well as nursed private patients and worked for private doctors. She was committed to being kind and sympathetic during times when patients felt their worst. While working in the immunizations sector, she would often come home telling stories of “absolutely beautiful” babies. When she was the HIV liaison, she would walk down dirt roads trying to locate patients that had been ostracized by the community. She often helped people after work, dropping by to change dressings, bathe elderly parents or take someone’s blood pressure. She nursed her own children through difficult times and she, herself, survived cancer, and a heart attack. Even after she retired, she continued to read her medical reference books and kept up with the latest medical developments. She was always a champion for the underdog, and nothing got her fired up like injustice. She was little in stature, but mighty in courage and heart. She dropped packing boys home at night because she was afraid they would be robbed walking home. She scraped money together for help pay for someone’s school shoes or books. She often opened her purse to give her last bit of money to someone who needed it. She broke up fights and gave pep talks. She would clean up before the maid came and she gave the gardener hot tea with plenty sugar and plenty biscuits. She was an animal lover and a people lover, and a world class cheerleader for her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her children, her grandchildren, and her friends. Being easy to talk to, she struck up conversations with people everywhere she went. Her sense of humor and spunky personality was a gift to many. She had a green thumb and was fascinated by nature. She was extremely interested in both global current events and in the lives of those she knew and loved. On even the hottest day, she could be found with a cup of hot tea and some ginger snaps. She loved to travel, explore new things, and meet new people. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Frank and Margaret Carruthers, and her brothers Johnny & Kenneth Carruthers. She is greatly missed by daughter: Harmony Thompson, Sons: Jonathan Harding and Craig Thompson. Grandchildren: Soleil Gates & Khaleesi Harding. Sisters: Hazel Graham, Jeannie (Tan) Gracie. Nieces: Margaret Carruthers, Gillian McMath, Susie Bolton & families. Nephews: Graeme Carruthers, Jason Graham, Guy Graham & families. Her “favorite person”: Ella Lesino, kind caregiver: Suzette Bullard. Close friends and relatives: Kata Pejakovic, Anne Craig & Family, Linda Sauer & Family, Mag Perez, Angela Fox, Kristina Garner & Family, Tim Neill, Chris Roberts. A memorial service will take place later. We are sure she is continuing to help people in heaven for she lived by the mantra, “Wherever there is a human in need, there is an opportunity for kindness and to make a difference.” ~ Kevin Heath.

God is faithful - yesterday, today and tomorrow BY CARLOS SPENCER MANY of us have experienced God’s faithfulness and can attest to it. Holy scripture mentions in Hebrews 10:23 (KJV): “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised).” In my view it is not possible to fully explain how faithful God is, but believers will try. Time after time when all natural solutions to life’s challenges are inaccessible or unseen, our Creator provides us with a supernatural solution or antidote; He demonstrates His faithfulness and reinforces that He is God. 2 Timothy 2:13 tells us: “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” As human beings we will inevitably confront circumstances that overwhelm us and are beyond our control. As believers in Christ we look to our faith and find solace and solution in scripture. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us “Jesus Christ yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” We are confident that God will bring us through our
valley experiences because He is faithful. Those of us who walk with God usually experience an innate peace in our lives notwithstanding any challenges we might encounter. God does not forsake those He has called because He is faithful and we are reminded of this daily. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us: “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” God protects those He has called and as believers we live within His providence. Irrespective of life’s challenges we quietly smile at the storms of life because we know whose we are. 1Thessalonians 5:24 tells us “faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” Psalm 91:4 emphasises the faithfulness of God: “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” We cannot avoid the twists and turns of life but as believers we can mitigate against them by focusing on our relationship with God. We can appreciate how faithful God is by considering Psalm 36:5: “Thy mercy, oh Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.” God is indeed faithful....yesterday, today and tomorrow. Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

UNE is the month when focus is placed on academic accomplishments as it is usually the season of graduations and college placement. Instead, let us turn our eyes to education in the church and see what God is requiring of us at this time of economic and social upheaval. If we want to be an informed church, then we need to be an educated church. Now more than ever, we have to be more intentional about our approach to raising up enlightened Christians. How enlightened to you currently feel? What are you prepared to do to change for the better? 1. The Purpose (why?) The main purpose of Christian education is to promote the work of Christian formation so as to enable all human beings to encounter the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. In this way, our lives are re-directed to live in faithful obedience to God’s will. It is a vital ministry involving the Christian story, call, and work for cultural change In the Bible, we hear the good news that the kingdom of God is here, and is being manifested in our love for God, others and ourselves. We learn about the early Christians and about their accountability to follow Christ intentionally. The spreading of the gospel can also become our lifetime professions, our lifelong vocation regardless of age or social situation. Everyone’s sense of self-worth is enhanced by kingdom living and kingdom building. Older members will not feel discarded by society but engage in unlimited service after retirement. Young people in search of a cause and identity can direct their energies toward God’s work of salvation. If we permit ourselves to be used by God, we can transform the 21th century just as second century Christians did in their time. 2. The Participants (who?) Once it is accepted that it is the Holy Spirit who is the teacher, then everyone falls in to the category of learners, with some having been under instruction longer than others, depending not so much on age as time of transformation or obedience to the spirit. 3. The Scope (what?) The whole of life comes under the scope of Christian education because what is being considered is a four dimensional approach to anything that is to be learned. Since God is at work in history, in the world, and in each of us, then all facets of human life need to be examined and explained. For too long the church has had set limits as to what falls under its jurisdiction. The time has now come to see that nothing should be too secular for Christian consideration. The gospel has a message for all persons in all situations. Transformation is needed everywhere. 4. The Context (where?) The context for “unintentional” Christian Education is the Christian community as a whole. During worship, planning sessions, fellowship times, service projects

When it comes to “intentional” Christian education, there has to be an atmosphere of openness, imaginative freedom, loving acceptance and encouragement, and a chance for creative conflict. The teacher must be one who has experienced transformation and is also aware of the various stages of human development, the forces of socialisation within the culture, and what the cultural norms are which have influenced the learner’s current life-style. Patience,
gentleness and love are also essential to create an environment conducive to learning. 5. The Process (how?) For adults, biblical and theological reflection alone in the presence of the Lord, and in dialogue with others, is the way to begin exploring the Christian story and vision. Learning tasks as a way forward need to include the following: • Accepting non-violent conflict as inevitable, and coming to welcome it as an opportunity for new growth. How comfortable are you to hear opinions
different to your own? • Developing the ability to reflect critically, and to live with unresolved tension for a time. Are you able to agree to disagree? • Engaging in imaginative pursuits and living with a sense of mystery and wonder. What in your faith journey cannot be explained rationally? When do you stand in awe of the God you serve? • Expressing release of energy and feeling the desire to be vulnerable to new self-knowledge and world-knowledge. They say that the world will never go back to the way it was before COVID-19 Are you able to trust God in the midst of global uncertainty and change? • Searching for interpretation of new insight, and people with whom to share it. Do you have a small or large group of persons with whom to discuss the bible and its application to life today? Is the group emphasis more on transformation than on information only? 6. Timing (when?) At every stage, there are appropriate ways to experience some level of transformation. However, periods of transition (puberty, school-leaving, engagement, marriage, child-birth, unemployment, promotion, separation, divorce, sickness, death of loved ones and other crises like natural disaster and global disease) provide the occasion for Christian education to facilitate the work of the Spirit. In fact, any time can be the right time and so an air of expectancy, an alert watching and waiting, makes Christian education exciting and challenging. Are you ready to become more intentional in the process of your own personal transformation? Are you thirsting for God? Are you hungering after righteousness (right living)? Still expecting great things! BY AYANNA CLARKE OVER the course of the last few days something strange has been happening. I’m becoming excited. Am I travelling? No. Did I get a new job? No. Is something happening in another area of my life that’s different from the norm? Not really. So why all of a sudden this overwhelming feeling of enthusiasm? It’s called expectation! A feeling of hope for what is to come. One of my favourite worship songs reiterates this thought in the lyrics, “I’m expecting great things!” I’ve sung it often and encouraged it in others, but recently I have had a renewed feeling of expectation for myself, and it is affecting everything. It has affected my self-care. Because I’m expecting something great for me, I have begun taking care of myself in a new way. Yes, fitness (of a certain nature) has always been on my agenda, but now it has taken on a new interest and vigour for me. It has affected my connections. I have shut the door permanently on all toxic connections. I’ve started seeing my own faults but also, and more importantly for me, giving myself permission to be right. I’m no longer asking approval to have an opinion. It has definitely affected my communication. I’m the type who has always kept silent, except for when I thought I was safe. Although lessons have taught me that perhaps we are never truly safe, I’ve not let go of my authenticity and I never plan to again. It has affected the way I see the world. To borrow a phrase from Corinthians, I used to “see through a glass dimly.” In other words, I had a pretty obscured view of reality – my reality, the world around me. I was in danger of letting negative experiences cloud my perception, and control my personal joy and fulfilment. Now, I’m quite avid about gaining power to differentiate between the perceived and the real. I’m learning the larger difference between what is fact and what is truth for me, and this has greatly improved my outlook and what I see for myself, and others. Proverbs 23: 18 says very simply: “Surely, there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” I like the book of Proverbs because it teaches us wisdom. Once we give place to the presence of God in our lives, “soak in the fear of the Lord” (as one version puts it), we find a future and great expectation. We find hope and something to look forward to. I
once believed that that future only meant a great future eternal promise, but I’m realising that expectation works in my “now” life as well. It causes me to work rather than mark time and wait. It causes me to love lavishly, rather than withhold myself or my feelings. Expectation humbles and empowers me all at the same time. It makes me see who I am and where I’m at – that’s definitely the humbling part. But it also provides empowerment when I plan and follow through with those plans in order to go one step further, one rung higher, one move closer to my future self. Believe me, this is not easy. We can plan, modify, or exchange goals, all while facing life’s traumas. Sometimes we score, other times we fumble. But greatness lies in the attempt. We are great, no matter what, because we continue to expect. We continue to work toward goals and dreams. This is a total sidebar, but recently I’ve been having strange dreams. Some are scary, others really confusing, and I wake up worried, wondering about the meaning of it all. Some, I’m hoping, mean something great. Others, I never wish to have again. But you know what, I haven’t stopped having them. I’m still dreaming. I think that’s perhaps our takeaway – no matter what happens in your life or how it affects you, never release the idea of expectation or its power to transform your life. Never allow happenstance to control your happiness. I have sat and listened so many times to persons share their deepest thoughts and closest personal experiences, and then they get up and leave and move on with their days and their lives and I am amazed. No matter what happens, they get up and move on – an amazing tribute to their own inner strength and expectation that things will get better, and great things are, perhaps, just around the corner. OR as long as she can remember, Kinara Lloyd said she has always been a great proponent for personal development. Ever the curious child asking too many questions, she said it was through reading a book that it was revealed to her at age 16 that she was to give her life to Christ. Today, she is a spiritual life influence coach and founder of the Training and Influence Centre (TIC). She also offers seminars and coaching through her LIFE brand, and she believes this is what God has called on her to do with her talents. “Spiritual coaching can assist persons who may be struggling with questions such as ‘Who am I?’, ‘Why am I here?’, ‘Why God, why?’ and ‘Who are You Lord?’; or those who simply feel stuck and want to grow spiritually,” she said. “You see, my identified life’s purpose, or true work, is to learn about God and His kingdom, then teach and demonstrate this to others. What I like most about being a spiritual creative entrepreneur is the complete intertwining or weaving together of my love for God and sharing Him and His standards...I get to have the best of both worlds, so to speak, when facilitating a spiritual development seminar or spiritual coaching or mentoring session. You see, I’m not the religious type. I’m spiritual but very practical. So is Jesus. And He’s my boss.” Kinara said it was under the 12-year tutelage by the late Dr Myles Munroe at the Diplomat Centre that she learned about the foundations of the doctrine of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God, and learned the principles for successful living. “There, and through many dozens of faith-building and self-help books, seminars and courses studied and applied over the past 20 years.
