DOROTHY JUNE (LLOYD) WEIS Dorothy, or Dot as those who knew her affectionately called her, went home to be with Lord on Wednesday May 18th, 2022 at her home in Cape Coral, Florida. She was 97 years old. Those left to cherish her memories are one brother, Kenneth Bruggeman and his wife Carol from Tinley Park, Illinois. Her children, Doris Butz and her husband Roger from Pisgah Forest, NC; Albert (Bert) Lloyd Sr. and his wife, Christa from Springfield, Missouri; Eve Lowe and husband Bruce from Nassau, Bahamas: Val Castera from Cape Coral , Florida and Donna Jennings and her husband Chris also from Cape Coral, Florida. Twelve (12) grandchildren and six (6) great grandchildren. Many other friends and relatives in the United States and The Bahamas. Dot was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on December 11th, 1924 and grew up and worked in the mid west until she met her first husband, Abbie Lloyd in the Bahamas while on vacation. They were married in June 1955 until the death of Abbie in 1976. During their time together they lived in the West Indies and the Bahamas. While in the Bahamas Dot and Abbie were among the founding members of the Lutheran Church of Nassau. In 1979 Dot moved to Florida where she met her second husband Kenneth Weis . They were married in 1983 and enjoyed 10 years together until Ken passed away in 1993. During these years they enjoyed travelling together to many different places including the Holy Land. Dot did miss the Bahamas at times and would always catch up with friends and relatives when she visited Nassau and through emails and phone calls. Our family greatly appreciates every phone call and message sent during this time and we thank each person in the past 5 years who was there to help us make life easier for mom as she became less mobile. A memorial service for Dorothy June will be held on Saturday July 2nd, 2022 at 4pm at Calvary Chapel Cape Coral; Cape Coral, Florida.

Veteran educator and Cat Island native remembered for her love of family and passion for teaching B
raving the inclement weather last Saturday, the family of the late Gloria Eleanor Russell assembled at St Barnabas Anglican Church to day their final farewells to their beloved “Aunt Glo”, who was laid to rest in Woodlawn Gardens Cemetery following her funeral service. Gloria Russell is not a name you will find in the Bahamas’ history books, but nevertheless, she touched countless lives with her love and passion for teaching. Born in the former capital of Cat Island, Arthur's Town, to George and Sarah Russell, she was the fifth of six children. As was customary on the island, she attended the Arthur's Town All Age School, where she showed an insatiable appetite for education and the academics. Upon graduating from the aforementioned school, she was invited to be a school/class monitor. Later on, she attended the Teachers Training College, thus affording her the opportunity of leaving her quaint little hometown and experiencing the “big” city of New Providence. Upon arrival in Nassau, she was invited to share a home with her younger sibling, Queenie (née Russell) Burton, who had
recently given birth to her oldest son, Vincent Ricardo Burton (later a doctor). The Russell clan made their homestead in the Big Pond Subdivision which was in close proximity to her first teaching post at the Mable Walker Primary School. After a decade of teaching and imparting her knowledge to children in the Bain Town community, Gloria was transferred to T Gibson Primary, which is now the C R Walker High School. At T Gibson, she was afforded the opportunity as serving as the school's senior mistress. Whatever school she was posted to, she was always well loved and respected by her colleagues and students. In 1988, Gloria was honoured by the Kiwanis Club of New Providence for exemplary service to the teaching profession. That year, she was also honoured by the primary school principal and was selected ‘Teacher of the Year’. Not only did Gloria pour all her passion into her job teaching profession, she also never forgot where she came from, engaging in the annual fundraising event for her Cat Island church, St Andrew’s Anglican Church. She used to say, “All smart people descend from Cat Island.” She was a devoted Anglican and was once a member of St
GLORIA ELEANOR RUSSELL Barnabas Anglican’s Church Women. In the latter years of teaching, Gloria was transferred to Columbus Primary where she ended her career without pomp or pageantry. “Aunt Glo”, who never had any children of her own, wanted
the best for her nieces and nephews, whom she considered her children. She would tell them, “You may be born in the ghetto, but you don't have to stay in the ghetto”. She also often quoted her alma mater’s motto which states, "Non scholae sed vitae
discimus”, which means “Not for school but for life we learn.” Every summer she would ensure that the five children who resided with her in Big Pond Subdivision were afforded the opportunity to travel abroad; to Miami, Atlanta, New York and Washington, among other destinations. Her indomitable spirit and demeanor started to erode and she eventually developed Alzheimer's. One of her nephews, Father Chester Burton, asked during his sermon: “If one woman can take care of five children, why can't five children take care of one woman?” “Aunt Glo” passed away on May 13 at age 84 while at her home on Fire Trail Road. For her final send-off, a number of clergy from the length and breadth came together at St Barbanas last Saturday, including Father Andrew Toppin, rector of St James Adelaide; Canon Sebastian Campbell; Canon Crosley Walkine, Canon Warren Rolle; Archdeacon Kingsley Knowles; Father Roderick Bain and Father Kristopher Higgs, the rector and assistant of St Barnabas Church respectively. Canon Basily Tynes eulogised her.

How to spot a false prophet BISHOP WALTER HANCHELL URGES CHRISTIANS TO DISREGARD THOSE WITH DAILY MESSAGES OF DOOM AND GLOOM By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
I
n every industry, whether it be the automotive, aviation or financial sector, or even the medical sphere, there exist imposters - people who cunningly and at times successfully deceive others for their own gain. It is no different in the religious and Christian communities. Time and again, some individuals portray themselves as having been called by God to lead people in their faith and give a word, only to eventually dupe those who have entrusted their spiritual guidance to their hands. In the Christian world, they are referred to as false prophets. Throughout the Bible, prophets have been called by God and tasked with the responsibility of bringing forth the unfiltered word of God just as they received it. Today, many prophets are still being used and fulfilling their call in the body of Christ. But there are also many who claim to be of God but are not. Warnings about false prophets – individuals who receive a word by other means, such as divination, fortune-telling, or sorcery – are also given attention in scripture. The discerning Christian can spot a fraudster. However, when those false prophets engage their charisma during speaking engagements, show a winning smile to match a quality threepiece suit, the not-so discerning and those new to the faith may find great difficulty deciphering true from false prophet. Bishop Walter Hanchell sought to shed some light on this issues, striving to equip believers with the tools to discern for themselves. In a recent Facebook post, Bishop Hanchell, who is the

He said one of the true signs of whether or not a person is real or fake boils down to what scriptural evidence theu provide to back up the claims that they make. “Any ‘prophet’ that has a word from the Lord every day is a false prophet, in particular those who never have a scripture. Don't listen to them and do not fear them. There are indeed true prophets around, but the false prophets seem to far outnumber them,” he said. Many of these prophets, he said, are not merely interested in winning souls over for the faith, but are interested how they can advance their own agenda using
the resources of those who sow seeds into their ministries. “There are a number of rogue so-called prophets and prophetesses out there trying to make a name for themselves or trying to get at your money. How do you identify them? If they keep telling you, ‘The Lord said’ and have no scripture to back it up; chase them away. “If they have a word from the Lord every day, please disregard them. In the Bible, God rarely spoke to His own anointed prophets. There is no record of God speaking to any prophet daily, as these lying false prophets claim in trying to deceive you to believe.” Bishop Hanchell went onto explain how there was a time when there was radio silence from God, so to speak.
“There was a period when God went for 400 years without speaking to a single prophet,” he said. Voice notes circulating today on social media by self-proclaimed prophets prophesising doom, gloom and destruction should be disregarded. Bishop Hanchell urged Christians to protect themselves from prophets spreading nothing but messages of despair. “If they're always speaking judgement and condemnation, get away from them. Genuine prophets speak words that edify, not words that put people in fear and bondage. We sure have a lot of Doomsday ‘prophets’ around speaking death and destruction. Remember, it is God's will that none perish but that all come to repentance. The Bible says, ‘Where sin abounds, grace does
much more abound". This is not a licence to sin, for the Bible clearly states that we will all be judged according as our works shall be, whether good or evil. And yes, ‘the wages of sin is still death, but the gift of God is eternal life’,” he said. Bishop Hanchell said there is a insatiable appetite among many believers for a prophetic word or word about future events in their life. He said this is the reason many people get trapped and swindled by false prophets. “If you need a prophetic word regularly, it's a very bad sign. It means you're immature and lazy as a believer, failing to study the word and pray as you ought to. Hence, you will always need a word from the Lord. You will have itchy ears and the false prophets know this, so you will become their victim. They will prey on you. They will deceive you and abuse you. They are snakes and snakes only know how to bite you,” he said. “One of the marks of a false prophet (not all) is that they love money and are skilled in relieving you of your hardearned money. They are arrogant and pretend to be humble. False prophets love to control and manipulate their victims before they deceive you. They will figure you out and tell you what they believe you want to hear. They will mix the truth with their lies to really confuse and deceive you. Many of these charlatans live immoral lives. Some are extremely charismatic but they are wolves in sheep clothing. They will put your life in chaos and confusion, if you believe their lying lips.” The only protection against the growing number of false prophets, he said, is for believers to submit themselves to God and seek his wisdom discern. “You must study (the word) to show thyself approved,” said Bishop Hanchell.

HE execution of last week’s Worship Gathering and Summit hosted by ASPAH – which stands for “Always sanctified, always praising Him” – was deemed a complete success by organisers and patrons. “Many who attended did not know what to really expect from this event given that there has not been conferences hosted like this in a very long time, however, persons left filled with knowledge and tools that they can take back into their communities to affect and improve their teams,” said Vince McDonald Jr, creative and fine arts director at Bahamas Faith Ministries International and CROWN Worship. ASAPH originated in the Fine Arts Ministry of Bahamas Faith Ministries. It is part of the legacy of the ministry, specifically that of the late Dr Myles Munroe and Pastor Dr Mark Bethel. Members said they were both visionary leaders but
also could be labelled as “true worshippers” This year’s conference included day sessions, an open worship experience, ministry seminars (Worship, Technology and Leadership), a concert, a CROWN Worship live recording and much more. “For us, (the most outstanding highlight of the conference) was seeing worshipers all come together under one roof to worship together. Another big highlight was the information and tools that were given to those in attendance,” said Mr McDonald. “We were able to provide impactful and dynamic teachings and sessions to persons representing all areas of fine arts, from media, worship, dance and drama. They were able to learn from topics like: ‘How to Pivot in Worship postPandemic’, ‘How to Lead a Multi-Generational Team’, and much more. Persons who attended left transformed.” He said this year's ASAPH Worship Gathering and Summit saw people from throughout the country representing various
churches and denominations in attenadance. ASAPH, Mr McDonald said, strives to be a leading platform for praise and worship leaders, creative arts ministers and tech teams to engage with one another, share ideas, receive new information and inspiration on how they can do ministry better, but it also a call for unity. He said scripture shows that unity is key for effective ministry. “We aren’t competing with one another. We may sing differently or prefer different songs, but at the end of the day we are all singing to an audience of one. We will continue building relationships and providing recourses and tools for all those that attend with monthly worship gatherings called ASAPH Nights, which are expected to nothing short of amazing,” said Mr McDonald. Performers and speakers included Sherwin Gardner, Pastor Mario Moxey, international worship leader Casey J, Karrington McKenzie, and CJay Rolle.

Historic celebration of Archbishop Drexel Gomez’ 50 years as bishop T
he Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands is gearing up for a historic celebration. On June 24, Archbishop Drexel Wellington Gomez will celebrate his 50th anniversary of consecration as a bishop in the Church of God. Many Anglican clergy never reach 50 years of ordination as a priest, and even fewer as a bishop. Archbishop Gomez is a native of the Berry Islands and came to New Providence as a boy of seven years old. He lived in McCollough Corner West off East Street. He grew up in St Agnes Church on Baillou Hill Road, attended the Western Senior School and went to seminary at Codrington College, Barbados. He was ordained deacon on December 21, 1959, and as priest on February 1, 1961. He worked as a parish priest, diocesan secretary administrator in the Bahamas, and as a lecturer at Codrington College. He

He retired from active ministry on December 31, 2008, but remains involved, active and helpful in so many areas. He is the founding head and a lecturer of the Anglican Theological Institute. He continues in those roles. The Diocesan celebration will be led by the Archbishop of the
Church in the Province of the West Indies, the Most Rev Dr Howard Gregory, Bishop of the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, who will be accompanied by his wife, Charmaine Gregory. This will be Dr Gregory' s first visit to the Diocese as Archbishop although, having served as the Suffragan Bishop of Montego Bay in the Jamaica/Cayman Islands Diocese for 10 years, he would have visited here many times in that capacity. Other special guests are the Rt Rev Peter Eaton, Bishop of our Companion Diocese of
Southeast Florida, and the Rt Rev Robert Thompson, retired Suffragan Bishop of Kingston, and Charmaine Thompson. Both men are no strangers to the Diocese. A number of special 50th anniversary events have been planned:
