County Cougars selected to the midseason classic. In his return from last season’s injury, Chisholm leads the Cougars with a career high seven home runs and is third overall with 45 hits. He appeared in 44 games thus far for the Cougars and in 177 at bats, he is hitting .266 with 22 RBI, 12 doubles, two triples and stolen bases. Chisholm has an on base percentage of .333, slugging percentage of .475 and OPS of .808. In his rookie season, Chisholm was named to the annual Pioneer League vs. Northwest League All Star Game as a member of the Missoula Osprey.

Brazil. Paulistano Sao Paolo closed out the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) finals with an 82-76 win over Mogi das Cruzes to clinch the best of five series 3-1. Nesbitt got the start but finished with just five points and four rebounds after battling foul trouble all game long. He averaged 5.8 points and 3.8 rebounds for the series. Paulistano opened the series with a 99-82 win in game one. Nesbitt finished with six points and five rebounds in 28 minutes. Mogi took game two with an 84-70 win, their first win over Paulistano in five meetings this season, dating back to the regular season. In game three Nesbitt came off the bench to finish with eight points and five rebounds in an 88-84 win. He was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line and, as a team, Paulistano shot 23-29 at the stripe. They also had 15 made three-pointers at 52 per cent. The NBB is the Brazilian premier professional men’s basketball league. In the opening round of the playoffs, Paulistano defeated Cearense 3-1 and outlasted Bauru 3-2 in a pair of best-of-five series. This season Nesbitt averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game on 55 per cent shooting from the field.

for Goes Montevideo in Uruguay’s (LUB). In 19 games he averaged 15.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Nesbitt spent the previous season in the Iraqi Superleague with Al Mina.

He helped them to win the regular season and make it to the final. Nesbitt was also voted to Asia-Basket.com’s Iraqi League All-Imports Team and AllSecond Team. He has also played professionally in Kazakhstan

for Kaspiy Aktau. Most recently, he participated with the men’s national team at the FIBA World Cup Americas Qualifiers where he averaged 6.1 points and 5.8 rebounds through the first two windows.

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net FOR another year, Sean Bastian will provide an avenue for many youngsters to experience college life at the University of the Bahamas as they participate in the 12th annual Sports Summer Camp. Designed for boys and girls between the ages of eight and 13, the camp will run daily from June 25 to July 20 between the hours of 9am and 2pm. “What we have been doing over the last 12 years is to encourage and motivate the youngsters in the fundamental sporting skills set in basketball, swimming, track and field and soccer. “We have a new swimming pool that was just recently renovated with heaters, which is our number one attraction. Our whole objective is to try to make sure that the kids have a wonderful time engaging in a college atmosphere at the university.” Bastian said they try to ensure that the campers are properly instructed in the four disciplines so that they would become their first options when they venture into high school. During each daily session, Bastian said the campers will rotate from one sporting station to the other in a hour frame as they are taught by a number of instructors, led by Charlene ‘Swish’ Smith, one of the members of the Athletic Department at UB. He noted that the campers will

has announced their intention to return to the Bahamas this summer for a series of exhibitions. The 2017 NCAA champions will debut their new freshman class as one of the many highlights to this year’s field for the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s Summer of Thunder, hosted at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. The programme has become a frequent visitor to the Bahamas with their fourth trip to the country during Roy Williams’ tenure as head coach. The Tar Heels last appearance at the Summer of Thunder featured the emergence of Deandre Ayton when as a high school sophomore his 17 points and 18 rebounds led the locally based Providence Storms to an upset win. The Tar Heels also appeared in Complete Sport Management’s Battle 4 Atlantis over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The team also visited the Bahamas in 2005 and 2010 for preseason games, in accordance with NCAA rules that allow teams to take international trips once every four years. The NCAA also allows for said teams to participate in 10 additional practices in order to prepare for the event in question. The exhibition gives exposure to the Bahamas as college fanbases of major programmes focus on these exhibitions because of the opportunity to get an early look at their respective freshman classes. This particular Tar Heel team will be without veterans Joel Berry II and Theo Pinson for the first time in four years but the recruiting class includes highly touted freshmen Nassir Little, Coby White and Rechon Black. Visiting programmes last summer included the Nicholls

State Colonels, Penn State Nittany Lions, Southern University Jaguars, Colorado State Rams, Rhode Island Rams, Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, Chicago State Cougars and Boston College Eagles. The showcase is designed to expose local talent to an international style of basketball, as well as give those players an opportunity to compete against some of the top collegiate basketball players the NCAA has to offer. The event also allows young Bahamian athletes to familiarise themselves with potential tertiary level institutions which they could possibly attend. Local teams include the Bahamas All-Stars, New Providence Basketball Association All-Stars, IBA Elite, CTG Knights and the Providence Storm. IBA Bahamas Elite held on late to defeat the Southern Mississippi

Golden Eagles 109-106 in overtime in their opening game of the series. At the conclusion of last year’s event, BBF first vice president and event organiser Mario Bowleg said that the event is growing in recognition and is making a name for itself on the international scene. “The tournament is only getting bigger and expanding and even though we always have a good number of teams here, there are always more that wanted to participate,” he said. “Bahamian teams have been able to hold their own. Many of the final scores have been close,” Bowleg said. “We feel as though the competition is stiff, the foreign teams and the coaches have been pleased that they have been able to face this competition as they prepare for their seasons.”

Sprite Basketball Tournament celebrates 10th anniversary with return on July 2 THE Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC) and the Royal Bahamas Police Force will once again team up for the 10th Annual Sprite Basketball Tournament. Young men will work together and compete on nine district teams to win the coveted title of Sprite basketball champions, while learning new skills in a friendly, safe environment. Each summer for the past decade, CBC has funded the Sprite Basketball Tournament, as well as providing all materials for the players and coaches. CBC also provides prizes and giveaways for players, while keeping all participants hydrated with Sprite and Dasani water. “The Sprite Basketball Tournament was created by CBC as a way to offer support to the various communities, around New

Providence, that we serve,” noted Nikia Wells, CBC marketing manager of communications. “We found a unique way to bring together young men, from a number of different community districts, for a fun, engaging event. Over the years, Sprite Basketball has truly created a positive environment for these young players. Davis Cup: Bahamas, ‘it’s time to get back to Zone I’ OVER the weekend, the Bahamas’ super quartet of Baker Newman, Philip Major Jr, Jody Turnquest and player captain Marvin Rolle returned home, having accomplished their ultimate goal of advancing from American Zone III to Zone II for 2019. It was another remarkable performance for the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association as they saw the team go through the weeklong tournament having not lost any of the five matches they played, including the clincher in the playoffs. While Newman played as the top seed, he wasn’t as sharp as he had expected and in each match, Major Jr stepped up and played exceptionally well as the giant killer, winning all of his matches to get the ball rolling each day. And to add to his measure, Major Jr also teamed up with Rolle to form a

formidable doubles team that was just as successful whenever they took to the courts. When they didn’t play, Rolle hooked up with Turnquest, the newcomer on the team, who also got his feet wet in a singles match. By virtue of knocking off host Costa Rica in the playoffs, the Bahamas has earned the rights to be promoted along with Paraguay to Zone II again for next year. Although it’s a long way to go, newly elected president Darnette Weir said it’s

their hope, with the support of corporate Bahamas, to give the players a lot more exposure by getting them to compete in tournaments overseas. No doubt the promotion to Zone II means that the players will have to be better prepared because the challenge will be greater as the Bahamas works toward getting promoted to Zone I again. The Bahamas, now ranked at No.99 in the world, last played in Zone II last year when the team of Spencer Newman, Major

advanced from Zone III to Zone II for 2017. So while the Bahamas has had to go through a see-saw ordeal between Zone II and III, it’s time to get back to zone one where we can host a home-and-away series as

we did with players such as Mark Knowles, Roger Smith, John Farrington, Mark Merklein, Sean Cartwright and Devin Mullings, just to name a few, captained by John Antonas. The differences, however, was the fact that when we did, most of the players benefitted from having performed at the international level in various tournaments. While we commend this crop of players, who are now taking the leadership role, it’s going to be incumbent upon them to get some more individual exposure to compete at the next Davis Cup level. On Saturday, the BLTA will recognise the quartet of Baker Newman, Philip Major Jr, Jody Turnquest and Marvin Rolle for their remarkable performances in Costa Rica. It’s an honour that is well deserving.

Bjorn Munroe tennis tourney set for Freeport today By DENISE MAYCOCK Tribune Freeport Reporter dmaycock@tribunemedia.net THE Bjorn Munroe 2018 International Tennis Tournament is scheduled to take place at the YMCA tennis facilities in Freeport today, with players from the United States competing with local players. Mr Munroe – who was the youngest Bahamas junior national champion, and who had competed on the pro circuit - is happy to be back home hosting this tennis tournament in Grand Bahama. The tournament officially opens at noon today and runs until Sunday, June 10. A cocktail reception was held yesterday evening at Pelican Bay Resort to introduce the draws and the players. “I am excited to be here, and I am grateful to the YMCA for partnering with us, along with the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Tourism, and many other sponsors, Munroe said. Several players from West Palm Beach will be participating. There will be a free tennis clinic held this morning before the noon opening. There will be matches for girls and boys ages 12, 14, 16, and 18 - and double matches for 14 and 18. Mr Munroe believes such tournaments are important and noted that his goal “is to

I was one of the youngest to win the junior nationals,” he recalled. He said that tennis afforded him the opportunity not only to go to school but to travel the world. Munroe received a scholarship to Ohio State, where he had an outstanding career there. He then went on to play for four and-a-half years on the pro-circuit, travelling all over the US and to 27 countries. “I went to every continent, except Australia,” he said. So tennis has done well for me, and it is a (wonderful) sport, you can play from two years old to 92 years old. It is one of those sports that really goes a far way.” Mr Munroe said that he wants to help Bahamians because many persons had helped him along too. “We have the talent here, we just need to develop it. And this is something I would

COLON MATCHES MARICHAL WITH 243RD VICTORY AS RANGERS TOP A’S ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bartolo Colon worked five innings for his 243rd career victory, matching Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal for the most by a player born in the Dominican Republic when the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 8-2 on Wednesday night. The 45-year-old Colon (3-3), in his fourth attempt at the milestone victory, got it against one of the 10 other major league teams he has pitched for since his big league debut in 1997 with Cleveland. He allowed Khris Davis’ two-run homer and had one strikeout and two walks. Colon leads active pitchers with 243 wins and 3,383 2/3 innings pitched. His 2,499 strikeouts are third among active pitchers, behind CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander. Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez, with 245 wins, is the only Latin American native with more victories than Colon. Halep beats Muguruza, Stephens defeats Keys at the French Open By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer PARIS (AP) — Simona Halep emphatically ended the impressive French Open run of 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the semifinals yesterday. Halep’s fourth chance to win her first Grand Slam title will come against reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who beat a mistake-prone Madison Keys 6-4, 6-4 in the first all-American semi-final at Roland Garros since 2002. Halep assured herself of retaining the No. 1 ranking and reached her third final in Paris. She lost both of the

previous ones in three sets, to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and to Jelena Ostapenko in 2017. “I will try my best,” Halep told the crowd at Court Phillipe Chatrier, “and hopefully I will be better than last year.” The Romanian also came up one victory shy of a major championship at the Australian Open in January, beaten there by Caroline Wozniacki. That means Saturday’s final at the French Open will be Halep’s third title match in the past five Grand Slam tournaments. “I’m happy,” she said, “that I can have another chance.”

The 10th-seeded Stephens had never made it past the fourth round in Paris until now. After sitting out nearly a year because of an injured right foot that needed surgery in January 2017, she has soared up the rankings and now made it to her second major final in the past ninth months. “Another great opportunity on Saturday, and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Stephens, whose late father, John, was the 1988 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year with the New England Patriots.

She improved to 3-0 against her longtime pal and Fed Cup teammate Keys, including their US Open final last September. “It’s always hard playing someone from your country and such a good friend,” Stephens said, “so I was really pleased to be able to get through that and play some good tennis.” Like Halep, Stephens is an incredibly talented defensive player, and she kept stretching points until Keys would err. In all, Keys made 41 unforced errors, 30 more than Stephens.

Muguruza, a two-time major champion, entered the semi-finals having not lost a set in the tournament. She also was coming off a lopsided victory in the quarter-finals a day earlier, overwhelming five-time major champion Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-1. But it took Muguruza quite a while to get going against Halep, who managed to keep sending ball after ball back over the net. Backed by fans who loudly chanted her first name between games, Halep went ahead 3-0 in only 15 minutes with the

help of only one winner. Of her first 14 points, 13 arrived via errors by Muguruza – nine unforced, four forced. It was 5-0 by the time Muguruza eventually claimed a game. The second set was more of a test for Halep, who was ahead by a set and 3-0 before falling apart against Ostapenko a year ago. Muguruza’s last stand came at 4-all in the second set, a 13-minute game in which she held three break points. NADAL INTO 11TH SEMI-FINAL IN PARIS, DEL POTRO IN 1ST SINCE ‘09 By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer PARIS (AP) — That Rafael Nadal would reach a record 11th French Open semi-final, closing in on his 11th championship at Roland Garros, was hardly surprising. That he trailed by a set and a break before rain delays allowed him to change tactics and recover to get there? Now that, certainly, was unusual. His opponent today will be Juan Martin del Potro, who got choked up after waiting nearly a decade to return to the final four in Paris — and dealing with three wrist operations in the interim. Both men advanced by winning quarter-finals suspended the night before because of rain. The No. 1-ranked Nadal quickly announced yesterday that he was not going to be as passive as he was in the early going against 11th-seeded Diego Schwartzman, seizing 12 of the initial 13 points after they stepped out under a blue sky and pulling away for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory at Court Philippe Chatrier. “Totally different guy yesterday,” Schwartzman said. “Maybe the day when you can beat Rafa was yesterday.” Across the way at Court Suzanne Lenglen, No. 5 del Potro got distracted by a spectator right before a key double-fault, then marched over toward the stands to try to figure out who it was. Otherwise, he stayed steady in a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 3 Marin Cilic in a matchup between two past US Open champions. The other men’s semifinal is No. 7 Dominic Thiem of Austria against 72nd-ranked Marco Cecchinato of Italy, who never won a Grand Slam match until last week and was cleared of a match-fixing charge on a technicality in 2016.

After del Potro served out his victory at love to get to his first semi-final at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament since 2009, he sat in his changeover seat, chest heaving. The 6-foot-6 (1.98-metre) Argentine wiped away tears during his on-court interview, telling fans who chanted his nickname, “delPo”: “It has been a long time without good feelings on my body. ... I was close to quit this sport. And now I don’t have any words to describe this moment. It’s so good for me, for my team, for my family.” Now comes what del Potro called “the challenge that every player wants to have” — taking on Nadal at Roland Garros. The 32-year-old Spaniard is 84-2 for his career at the French Open, winning four consecutive titles from 2005-08, another five consecutive from 2010-14, and No. 10 a year ago. Nadal had not even dropped a set in the tournament since that match against Djokovic, a run of 37 in a row that ended in the opener against the 5-foot-7 (1.70-metre) Schwartzman, an Argentine eyeing his first appearance in a major semi-final. Schwartzman compiled a 20-4 edge in winners in that first set, then broke Nadal for the fifth time in eight service games and was ahead 3-2 in the second when a rain delay of just under an hour arrived.

“I was a bit lucky,” said Nadal, who is 10-0 in French Open semi-finals and 10-0 in finals at the tournament. “Gave me time for reflection, to calm my nerves and to see how I needed to change things.”

When they returned to the court, Nadal used a burst of three straight games — and 13 of 15 points — to close in on taking the second set. He was serving for it at 5-3, 30-15 when a new shower ended play for the day.

Nadal wrapped up that set by winning the first two points played yesterday and he was on his way, never relenting. “He was playing great, and I was playing too defensive. I felt that I was playing a little bit under more stress

than usual, and he was able to take control of the point too many times,” Nadal said about the match’s start. And after the rain? “I played more aggressive,” Nadal said, adding: “In my opinion, the match changed, no?”

Neymar to play against Austria, Fred injured in Brazil training By MAURICIO SAVARESE AP Sports Writer LONDON (AP) — While Neymar seems to be finishing his injury recovery and is set to play in Brazil’s last pre-World Cup friendly at Austria on Sunday, midfielder Fred left yesterday’s training in pain after a tackle. Brazil coach Tite put Neymar in his main formation during training in London and removed midfielder Fernandinho from the starting lineup. On Sunday, Neymar joined the team during the break against Croatia. He scored the first goal of the game after dribbling past two opponents and was more active than coach Tite expected at this stage of his recovery. Neymar is returning from a foot injury that kept him out for three months. Tite also kept winger Willian in the team, which suggests he will use midfielder Philippe Coutinho

South Korea will play another friendly against Senegal on Monday before travelling to Russia. It has Sweden, Mexico and Germany in Group F. Facing Finals sweep, LeBron praises ‘stacked’ Warriors By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James was relaxed, reflective and even resigned to his fate. The end of the series, season and maybe his second stint in Cleveland, are near. The Golden State Warriors have made his eighth straight NBA Finals — and their seasonal rivalry with the Cavaliers — very one-sided. Still weary and wrestling with emotions after losing Game 3 on Wednesday night, when Kevin Durant scored 43 points and shot the Warriors within one win of their third title in four years, James pointed out yesterday what has become terrifyingly obvious. The Warriors are at another level. And may be for a while. “Obviously, from a talent perspective, if you’re looking at Golden State from their top five best players

to our top five players, you would say they’re stacked better than us. Let’s just speak truth,” James said before rattling off Golden State’s embarrassment of riches. “Kevin Durant,” he said. “You’ve got two guys with MVPs on their team. And then you’ve got a guy in Klay (Thompson) who could easily be on a team and carry a team, scored 40 in a quarter before. And then you have Draymond (Green), who is arguably one of the best defenders and minds we have in our game. So you have that crew. “Then you add on a Finals MVP coming off the bench (Andre Iguodala), a No. 1 pick in (Shawn) Livingston and an All-Star in David West and whatever the case may be. So they have a lot of talent.” Too much, it seems, for these Cavs. James wasn’t making excuses for Cleveland’s postseason pickle because if

Smith’s brainlock in the closing seconds of regulation in Game 1 or Durant’s brilliance in Game 3, the Cavs could be leading the series. The three-time champion, though, was being open and honest about the Cavs’ chances to become the first team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs. To this point, 131 have tried, and 131 have failed.

“We’ve been in a position where we could win two out of these three games,” said James, who had 33 points and his 10th Finals tripledouble in Game 3. “So what do we have to do? Do we have to make more shots? Is it we have to have our minds into it a little bit more? Is it if there is a ball on the ground we can’t reach for it but you’ve got to dive for it?” Those were yesterday’s relevant questions. Today, they’ll be different ones if the Warriors, who have dealt with adversity all season, sweep the Cavs. James is headed toward free agency and then where: Los Angeles? Philadelphia? Houston? Or will he decide it’s too painful to part again with Cleveland, his basketball home for 11 seasons and just up the highway from his actual home in Akron? The 33-year-old plans to consider everything once the season ends, but he offered some clues about

what he’ll consider before making his next move, a decision that will dwarf any other NBA news in July. James also laid out a potential blueprint for the Cavs to follow if they want to keep him. Bottom line: James needs better, smarter teammates. No player in the league understands the current climate better than James, who formed a super-team in Miami with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh and won two NBA titles before returning to Cleveland and joining forces with All-Stars Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. The Cavs’ reign lasted only one year, destroyed by Durant’s shocking departure from Oklahoma City for the 73-win Warriors, a team he couldn’t beat but was glad to join. James said his decision to bolt from the Cavs the first time was simple. “I knew that my talent level here in Cleveland couldn’t succeed getting

past a Boston, getting past the San Antonios of the league or whatever the case may be,” he said. But beyond the talent disparity, James said the key to winning a championship is “you’ve got to be very cerebral too.” James then explained what it takes to be the last team standing, and in the process seemed to take a swipe at unnamed current and former teammates. “So now everyone is trying to figure that out,” he said. “How do you put together a group of talent but also a group of minds to be able to compete with Golden State, to be able to compete for a championship? That’s what GMs and presidents and certain players, it’s not every player. Every player does not want to — sad to say — but every player doesn’t want to compete for a championship and be in a position where every possession is pressure.”

A rocky season for Warriors, but a perfect ending awaits By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — By Golden State standards, this season was downright bumpy. The Warriors won only 58 regular-season games, by far their fewest in this four-year run of excellence. They went 7-10 in their final 17 games of the regular season. Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala all got hurt. They needed to win a Game 7 on the road to reach the NBA Finals, and they could have easily lost two of the first three games of this series. Yet here they are. Golden State is on the cusp of another NBA championship, holding a 3-0 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers going into Game 4 of the finals. The Warriors could be champions again as early as tonight, and this crown — after experiencing plenty of turbulence this season — would most definitely be one to savour. “Going into this season, I don’t think anybody could have guessed or predicted the ups and downs and the roller coaster we’ve been on,” Curry said yesterday as the Warriors prepped for the possible

clincher. “So, definitely a different year, just overall, personally with injuries, as a team with dealing with injuries, dealing with the kind of expectations that have been placed on us from the outside and the noise around us as a team.” They went 67-15 on the way to the NBA title in 2015, matched that record on the way to another title last season and went 73-9 — the best record in league history — in 2016 only to fall short in the finals against Cleveland. That series, one where the Warriors led 3-1, changed when they couldn’t finish the job while being presented with serious adversity. This year, there’s been a toughness to go along with the finesse. They overcame deficits of 17 and 15 points against Houston in the final two games of the Western Conference finals, the second of those on the Rockets’ home floor. They overcame an 11-point deficit in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against Cleveland, and rallied from 13 points down to beat the Cavaliers in Game 3 on Wednesday. They needed 27 starting lineups in the regular season, and five so far in the playoffs. But they’re one win away from getting their
