‘Keno’ gets chance to play for title in French league By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net JARAUN ‘Keno’ Burrows, one of the Bahamas’ most talented basketball players, will get a chance to play for the championship title in the French Pro B Division, the second tier level league in the country. The 6-foot, 8-inch 220-pound forward helped Fos Provence Basket to complete a three-game sweep of their semi-final matchup Monday night and now they will have the rest of the week off as they wait to see who their opponent will be when the final gets underway on Monday. The winner of the title will be promoted to the top ranked division one league next year. “It was a long season, but a good season,” Burrows told The Tribune from France yesterday. “We finished as the No.3, ending

the regular season on 4-5 game winning streak coming into the playoffs. “We were rolling in the playoffs where we had all best-of-three series. “The semi-final was a 20 sweep and the semi-final was a sweep as well. We’re getting ready for the finals on Monday and we’re hoping that the streak can continue.” En route to getting out of the first round, Burrows said they took on the No.7 seeds and although their ranking was a little lower than expected, the team provided some stiff challenge. But they managed to pull off the home opener and closed the door against two players whom he played against for the Bahamas in the World Cup Qualifier that featured a player from the US Virgin Islands and one from Canada. “It was good to send them home,” Burrows quipped.

In the semis, Burrows said their opponents upset the No.2 team. “We knew they were going to be a feisty, young team, so it was good preparation for us,” Burrows pointed out. “We took care of business in both games. In the first game, we were up by a lot, about 41-12 and they came steamrolling back and cut it to about five as we held on for the win. “So we knew going into the second game, we would have had a fight on our hands. We made the adjustment and went into their place and won 92-70. Now we’re getting ready for the final.” While he scored 20 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out two steals and blocked as many shots in Monday’s finale, Burrows pushed his average to about 20.1 points and 9.2 rebounds, around the same numbers he put up during the regular season.

He was also named the most outstanding player in both the quarter and semi-finals. With an older team than most, at age 32, Burrows said he feels like a young boy. At least three guys are still making a significant contribution at 41, 39 and 37 respectively. “They make me feel young, but we also have a good young core of French talent to mix up the import of American players,” Burrows revealed. “So we have a collective group.” Now that they are in the final, Burrows said the only thing left is to pull it off and hoist the trophy as the champions. “We’re now into the final, so anything is possible,” he said. “This pro B France is no pushover. It’s tough. Night in and night pout, one team could lose to the 17th ranked team. It’s that kind of fight.”

t some point before she was done, Devynne Charlton figured that she would eventually face Pedrya Seymour in a major collegiate championship matchup. That opportunity could finally come this weekend as Charlton completes her four-year sting for the Boilermakers at Purdue University and Seymour - a junior transfer for the University of Texas Longhorns - advances to the final of the women’s 100 metres at the NCAA Division One 2018 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The championships will get underway today at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, when the men will compete in their semi-final events, while the women’s semis won’t be contested until Thursday. The men’s finals are set for Friday and the women will go on Saturday. In addition to Charlton and Seymour, the Bahamas will be represented by several athletes at different schools in their respective events. But for the first time, Bahamians will get a possible chance to see the much anticipated matchup that Charlton said would close

I just had my last hard workout yesterday and so I’m just ready to go,” Charlton said. “I don’t want to put anything out there. I just want to go out there and do my best and hopefully that would be good enough to come out with the win, a national record and a school record. But really the focus is just to execute a good race, something that I haven’t done in a while.” With one of the top times in college, Charlton said she’s confident that she will do very well. But she admitted that having Seymour as a possible matchup in the final is something that she has been looking forward to for quite some time.

“Thinking about it, this would be our first time competing against each other outdoors because either I was hurt or she was hurt,” Charlton said. “So I think it will be a treat to see us both compete against each other. I still look at it as another matchup because you don’t want to give anybody any edge, but I want to see good things from her, just as well as I want to do very well.” And with the other Bahamians competing, Charlton said it should be a festive weekend in Eugene. “Being away from home, you won’t get to compete in front of the home crowd, so it’s just as comforting

FREEPORT Rugby Football Club will join forces with their Bahamian rivals in a highly anticipated showdown with a Texas all-star squad in Nassau Saturday. in April, Freeport has continued to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Stephen Sheehan, youth development officer, along with captain Ben Power have continued to help the team stay in shape with fitness-based sessions

in anticipation of the U-23 match and summer sevens season. The match is scheduled to kick off at 3pm and should be an exciting and physical battle between the best of the Bahamas and the state of Texas.

However, the men won’t be the only Freeport players representing the Bahamas. Abby Alain, a graduate of St George’s High School, was selected to represent the Bahamas national women’s rugby team. A former soccer player, Alain joined Freeport’s girls’ team earlier this year and showed tremendous potential in a sevens tournament in Nassau back in February. Alain’s physicality and upside caught the eye of the national team coaches, and she will take part in the team’s first training session on Saturday as they prepare for a trip to Mexico in July. “We couldn’t be more proud of Abby’s hard work and look forward to her showcasing her abilities on the national stage,” said Sheehan. “This is a rare opportunity and I hope this is just the beginning for her rugby career.

Women’s discus After rebounding from an injury that prevented her from competing last year, Texas A&M’s sophomore Serena Brown will be among the field in the women’s discus where she will be the last of 12 competitors in the first of two flights. Brown has a chance to bring some glory to the famed Aggies’ programme

by being one of the nine competitors to get into the final round to contend for the top spots. Men’s Triple Jump In an event where the Bahamas has achieved a great deal of success on the field, Kaiwan Culmer will be out to claim his own spotlight when he competes for the final time as a senior for the University of Nebraska where his sister Kenya Culmer left her mark as a high jumper. Culmer will approach the runway as the second competitor in the last of two flights of 12 each where the top nine will move on to compete for the top spots. He comes into the

competition with a seeded mark of 15.85m. Men’s Javelin Not known as one of those events where the Bahamas has a tradition of doing well, Denzel Pratt could add some more history to his résumé when he throws for Liberty University. The Bahamian national record holder will be the sixth competitor in the second flight of 12 where again the top nine will move on to compete for the top spots. His seeded mark is 69.60m. 4 x 400m Relays No meet will be complete without the Bahamas having a presence and there

will be at least two as quarter-miler Janae Ambrose, in her junior year, is scheduled to be a part of Auburn University women’s 4 x 400m team that will compete in lane four in the last of the three heats of eight teams. The top two teams in each heat plus the next best two will appear in the final. And hurdler Xavier Coakley, also a junior, will be out to add some more roar for the Tigers when he competes on Auburn’s 4 x 400m team that will be in lane two in the first of three heats of eight each. Again, the top two from each heat and the next two best times will earn their lane in the final.

in November and February here and on the road, said depending on how he feels at the end of the final, he will make a decision on his position. “I’m a little beat up from these playoffs, so I will see how I finish up,” he projected. “If I’m not too banged up because it’s

been a long 10 months. I have been home twice in that period, but I hear we have some good young talent coming in, so it would be good if we can get it done, whether I’m there or not. But I would like to be a part of it. I just have to wait and see what happens here.”

Livingston, McGee giving Warriors big lift vs Cavaliers in NBA Finals By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — Shaun Livingston and JaVale McGee have been giving the Golden State Warriors a huge lift in these NBA Finals by making every shot they take look easy. Then again, they all have been easy. Livingston is a perfect 9 for 9 from the field in this championship series. McGee is 8 for 9, and his lone miss came when he tried a dunk and stuffed the ball into the rim instead. The average distance of their made field goals is a staggeringly close 3 1/2 feet, which is basically gimme range in golf and darn close to gimme range in basketball as well — especially at this level. For as spectacular as LeBron James has been in the first two games, his Cleveland Cavaliers are down 2-0 largely because the Warriors’ supporting cast members like Livingston and McGee — journeymen of sorts — are soundly outplaying their Cavs’ counterparts. Stephen Curry is playing like an NBA Finals MVP, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson have been brilliant, and Draymond Green is quietly averaging a near triple-double. But the Warriors’ motto is “strength in numbers,” and Livingston and McGee are personifying that. “It’s just being aggressive, being in the right spot too,” Livingston said. “It’s nothing really magical about what I do or how I’ve been playing. I’ve been fortunate enough to, you know, shoot at a high clip. But a lot of those are dunks. Also, just being in the right spot on the court.” Livingston has taken three jumpers, all of them mid-rangers of about 13 feet, in this series. Everything else has been at the rim. McGee made one shot from about 6 feet; his other eight attempts from the

He said Tuesday that he doesn’t know if he’ll stay there for Game 3 in Cleveland tonight. “These are some of the greatest teams in the world, ever,” McGee said. “It’s a beautiful thing to be a part

of it and to be a contributor in it.” It’s a difficult enough spot for the Cavaliers to deal with Curry, particularly when he is coming off an NBA Finals-record nine 3-pointers in Game 2. It’s daunting to deal with Durant, one of the few guys in the league who can post up against James, turn and face the four-time MVP and

shoot over him with relative ease. It’s maddening to chase Thompson around and have him get shots off using his super-quick release, even when he’s fairly well covered. Golden State opponents expect that. Livingston and McGee shooting 17 for 18, that just doesn’t seem fair. “I think when you’re locked

in and you’re trying to take away K.D., you’re trying to take away Steph and Klay, Livingston, McGee, they’re going to get some shots,” Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said. “We’ve just got to do a better job of taking away the easy dunks and layups around the basket. When you’re focusing on those three guys, other guys are going to get shots. But we’ve got to do a good job of just taking away the easy ones.” McGee got the Warriors off and running in Game 2 with two easy dunks to open the game. Golden State never trailed. Livingston said that wound up being a huge

energy boost for Golden State, and he knows that the Cavaliers will aim to take the easy ones at the rim away in Game 3. As such, the Warriors might already have a counter in mind for whatever anticipated adjustment Cleveland makes. “Coaches, I think they have a good game plan moving forward, seeing maybe what kind of adjustments Cleveland can make,” Livingston said. “We just have to be ready. Steph, Kevin, Klay, our scorers, they take the majority of the load, right? So they get a lot of the attention and the pressure. I think we have to be ready, all us other guys, to relieve some of that pressure.”

DOLPHINS TOP DRAFT PICK FITZPATRICK MAKING GOOD IMPRESSION By STEVEN WINE AP Sports Writer DAVIE, Florida (AP) — Two weeks into the Miami Dolphins’ offseason practice regimen, first-round draft pick Minkah Fitzpatrick’s running tally of interceptions is underway. “Have I been counting them? Every DB counts them,” Fitzpatrick said with a laugh after yesterday’s workout. “I’ve got two picks and a couple of pass breakups. Just doing my job.” Contact drills won’t begin until training camp, but early indications are the Dolphins used the 11th overall pick wisely when they selected Fitzpatrick. The safety from Alabama said he’s not fazed by reports Dolphins owner Stephen Ross wanted to trade down on draft night rather than pick Fitzpatrick. “I heard about it,” Fitzpatrick said. “He’s a businessman. He’s going to see the business side of everything. This is extra motivation to prove I’m a worthy pick and deserve to be here.” The front office wanted a playmaker to upgrade a defence that ranked fourth-worst in points allowed last season, and so far Fitzpatrick looks as if he’ll make Miami better. “He has done a good job,” coach Adam Gase said. “He has gotten his hands on a lot of balls. He seems to be all over the place. He has a great motor and a great work ethic. You can tell he takes this very seriously and puts everything he has into this.” The Dolphins’ investment goes beyond a first-round choice. Fitzpatrick signed a $16.44 million, four-year deal last week. But he said he didn’t celebrate the contract, and doesn’t have any plans for the money besides buying a place to live. “Anytime you see your hard work paying off, it’s a good feeling,” he said. “But you’ve got to keep telling yourself it’s not the end goal. I didn’t come here just to be a first-round pick. I wanted

He said he doesn’t have a preference and is happy to move around. “They trust me to do that,” Fitzpatrick said. “They’re not putting too much on me, but they know they can put a lot on me.” Pro Bowler Reshad Jones is certain to start at one safety spot, and veteran safety T.J. McDonald also returns after starting the final eight games last season. Defensive coordinator Matt Burke may decide to play both along with Fitzpatrick at times, and June is a time for experimenting.

General manager Chris Grier has compared Fitzpatrick to a Swiss army knife because of his versatility. And wherever Fitzpatrick lines up, he’s making his presence felt. “He is flying around at practice,” quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. “He plays aggressive and plays fast, and that’s what you want to see out of a DB.” Fitzpatrick played for Nick Saban at Alabama, which may be why he hasn’t found the demands of the NFL too daunting so far. In fact, the coaching styles of Saban and Gase are similar, he said. “They’re both very passionate coaches,” Fitzpatrick said. “They’re both real hands-on. The only difference is coach Saban yells a bit more.”

Place your bets: Delaware takes sports wagers, others close By RANDALL CHASE and BEN NUCKOLS DOVER, Del. (AP) — The market for legal sports gambling in the United States widened significantly yesterday with expanded betting in Delaware, putting legal wagering within driving distance of three major East Coast cities less than a month after the United States Supreme Court cleared the way for states to accept the bets. Instead of flying to Las Vegas or betting illegally, fans in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington can make a short drive to legally bet in Delaware on the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Final or the World Cup. More states are likely to join the action by the time the NFL starts

its season in the fall. “Giants and Yankees, all day, every day,” Manhattan native Karriem Keys said Tuesday after betting on the New York Giants to win the Super Bowl next year. Keys, 53, who now lives in Dover, was one of a couple of dozen people laying down early wagers at Dover Downs as Delaware became the first state outside Nevada to offer legal gambling on individual sporting events. “In New York, we would go right to the corner store, to the bodega, and bet,” Keys said. “That’s not legal, but, you know, everybody was doing it. But now it’s legal so it’s great.” Gov. John Carney had the honor of placing the first bet, wagering $10 on the Philadelphia Phillies to beat the Chicago

Cubs on Tuesday night. “I’m a big sports fan, a big Philadelphia sports fan,” said Carney, who traveled to Minnesota in February to watch the Eagles win the Super Bowl. Dover Downs casino workers took in 36 bets within the first 20 minutes of legal wagering. The offerings at Delaware’s three casinos include bets on professional baseball, football, hockey, basketball, soccer, golf and auto racing. Because of a failed sports lottery experiment in 1976, Delaware was partially exempted from the 1992 federal ban on sports gambling that was recently struck down by the Supreme Court. That exemption led to broader sports betting legislation passed in 2009 and Delaware’s NFL parlay wagering system, which gave the

state a head start in offering more wagers. “I just had to get in on the action, you know what I mean?” John Celatka of Dover said after betting on Tuesday night’s Colorado Rockies game and Wednesday night’s NBA Finals game. Celatka said he’s done pretty well with NFL parlay wagers and single-game wagers was a logical next step. “I’m excited to get started with football season,” he said. “I like my chances.” Fans in three other states could be placing bets by football season. In New Jersey, which successfully challenged the federal ban, lawmakers hope to have a bill signed by the end of this week that resolves competing proposals

to allow sports betting at casinos and horse racing tracks. In Mississippi, where lawmakers proactively legalized sports gambling at the state’s 28 licensed casinos in anticipation of a favorable Supreme Court decision, regulators have proposed rules that could be voted on as early as June 21. That means casinos could start taking bets in late July. West Virginia also passed a sports betting law before the Supreme Court decision, and officials there hope to have sports betting when football season kicks off. The West Virginia Lottery Commission is working on draft rules and regulations but has given no timetable for when they might be ready.

JUDGE SETS DOUBLEHEADER K RECORD AS YANKS AND TIGERS SPLIT DETROIT (AP) — Yankees slugger Aaron Judge became the first player to record eight strikeouts in a doubleheader, including five punchouts in the

nightcap as the Detroit Tigers beat New York 4-2 for a day-night split Monday. Leonys Martin had two hits and scored twice for

Detroit in the second game after New York took the opener 7-4 behind eight strong innings from Luis Severino (9-1) and a six-run fourth inning. Judge struck out eight times in nine at-bats, the most in a doubleheader since strikeouts for hitters were first recorded in 1910 for the NL and 1913 in the AL, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Judge struck out in each of his five at-bats in the late game, including with a runner aboard in the bottom of the ninth. The five strikeouts were a career high for Judge, who led the majors with 208 strikeouts while winning AL Rookie of the Year last season. The doubleheader made up rainouts from April 14 and 15. Both teams wore No. 42 for the second game because they were making up their postponed Jackie Robinson Day showdown. Mike Fiers (5-3) got the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Three relievers finished, with Shane Greene striking out three in the ninth for his 15th save. Detroit’s pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in the game. Ronaldo begins preparations for World Cup amid Madrid doubts By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer SURROUNDED by doubts about his future at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo is bringing some unwanted distraction to Portugal ahead of the World Cup. Ronaldo joined Portugal’s squad on Monday, with just about everyone wondering what he will say about his situation with Real Madrid. For the second straight year, Ronaldo linking with the national team is being marred by talks about his club. The same thing happened before the Confederations Cup, when a Portuguese daily published a report saying Ronaldo wanted to leave Real Madrid after being accused of tax fraud in Spain. This time, it was Ronaldo himself who raised doubts about his future, saying moments after the Champions League final that

it “was very beautiful” to have played with the Spanish club. UEFA to pay $2.28Bn prize fund to 32 Champions teams By GRAHAM DUNBAR AP Sports Writer GENEVA (AP) — UEFA has announced big increases in Champions League prize money topping $2 billion next season, to be paid out in a new system favouring elite clubs with most historical success. Three-time defending champion Real Madrid is already sure to earn more than 50 million euros ($60 million), plus a share of Spanish television rights money, before playing a game next season. The 32 Champions League teams kicking off in the group stage in September will share a prize fund of 1.95 billion euros ($2.28 billion), up from 1.4 billion euros ($1.6 billion) this season, UEFA said yesterday. A new distribution system sees 30 per cent — 585 million euros ($683 million) — of the fund now allocated via a points table ranking teams by 10 years of UEFA competition results and European trophies won since the 1950s. It changes a system that better rewarded clubs from the most valuable broadcasting markets, such as England and Italy, by giving them a larger share of those rights deals, known as “market pool” money. Leicester earned more from UEFA in the 201617 season than eventual winner Real Madrid, in part because the first-time English champion earned 49 million euros ($57 million) in television money alone while reaching the quarterfinals. Djokovic falters, Cecchinato soars in French Open stunner By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer PARIS (AP) — It was difficult to discern which was less likely: that 12-time major champion Novak Djokovic would falter in his French Open quarter-final or that Marco Cecchinato, who never won a Grand Slam match until last week and once faced a possible ban for losing on purpose, would rise to the occasion. Either way, yesterday’s outcome was stunning. To both men. And to anyone watching. Djokovic, bothered by neck and leg problems, went from two sets down to the verge of forcing a fifth, but he frittered away good chances and in the end was beaten by the 72nd-ranked Cecchinato 6-3, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-6 (11) in a rollicking match filled with engaging exchanges and plenty of drama. “A hard one to swallow,” a glum Djokovic acknowledged during a brief news conference, in which he delivered clipped answers and said he might not play

during the upcoming grasscourt season. Cecchinato is the lowest-ranked French Open semifinalist in 19 years and the first Italian man to make it that far at any major in 40 years. “The best moment of my life,” Cecchinato said. Djokovic served for the fourth set at 5-3 — “I thought,” Cecchinato would say, “my Roland Garros was about to end” — but the 2016 French Open champion got broken. Djokovic then held three set points in the tiebreaker — “I saw ghosts,” Cecchinato would joke — but couldn’t convert. At 7-6 in the closing tiebreaker, he pushed a backhand long.
