Bodybuilders selected for CAC Championships By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net ollowing the completion of its Novice and National Open Championships, the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation has selected a 16-member team to represent the country at the Central American and Caribbean Championships. Federation president Joel Stubbs said the team, led by national coach Raymond Tucker and assisted by Leonardo ‘Nardo’ Dean, is all primed and ready to compete in the championships, scheduled for July 27-29 in Mexico. Named to the team are the following: Men’s bodybuilding - Paul Wilson, Charles Reckley, Giovanni Farrington and Reginald Bain.

Women’s bikini - Tashara Seymour, Shakira Ferguson and Japhier Gardiner. Men’s physique - Terran Knowles, Raynor Ferguson, Alberto Armbrister, Gemo Smith, Jeremy Misciewicz and James Bain. Women’s wellness - Athena Bain Female Figure - Lyndsay Curry Muscular Men’s Physique Rashad Edgecombe Stubbs, who will head the delegation, said although some of the competitors will be making their debut, he expects that the team will give a good representation of the Bahamas and bring back some hardware. “I anticipate us to finish in the top three, even though we are carrying a much smaller team,” he said. “We still have the power and dynamics. We have some strong

competitors in just about every category. “We have three persons in the bikini team to represent the Bahamas, one in the women’s wellness, the men’s physique has a number of competitors who should do very well.” However, Stubbs said they won’t have a full men’s team in the bodybuilding competition, but he’s looking forward to Mr Bahamas Charles Reckley getting a chance to compete for the overall title along with Paul ‘Mighty Mouse’ Wilson and Giovanni Farrington. “We are hoping that these competitors can win their divisional titles and go on to compete in the pose down with a chance to compete for their IFBB Pro card,” Stubbs stressed. The Bahamas will have the luxury of taking two judges, one

of whom will be Charles Sealy, the chief judge, who will get to officiate during the championship. The other has yet to be named. Two other judges, the federation’s first vice president Kenny Green, and Lillian Moncur, will travel to sit their Continental Judging exam to be able to judge at the CAC and regional level. To help defray the expenses for the team’s travel to the championships, the federation is set to hold a Family Fun Run/Walk and Morning Boil on Saturday. The event will start in Rawson Square at 6am and finish at Better Bodies Gym in the Shirley Street Plaza. The registration is $15 for adults and $7 for children under 15 years of age. The Morning Boil Chicken Souse is $10. Awards will be presented to the first three finishers in each age group category.

HARDEN SCORES 30, ROCKETS EVEN THE SERIES 2-2 By JANIE MCCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, California (AP) — James Harden scored 30 points, Chris Paul had 27 and the Houston Rockets sustained the latest second-half flurry by Stephen Curry, evening the Western Conference finals at two games apiece with a 95-92 victory last night. Curry scored 28 points and Kevin Durant added 27 points and 12 rebounds but the defending champions missed their final six shots from the floor and their NBA-record postseason winning streak at home ended at 16 games. The Rockets shook off a 12-0 deficit to start the game and another big run by the Warriors in the third, then won it with defence down the stretch. Paul rebounded Klay Thompson’s miss just before the final buzzer sounded for the first time and pounded the ball down in delight. A replay review ensued and it was determined Shaun Livingston fouled Paul before the game ended, so Paul made a free throw with 0.5 seconds left. Curry couldn’t get off a final attempt before the buzzer. “I thought this is the highest level we’ve ever played defensively, without a doubt,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said, “because we’re talking about the best offensive team ever.” Game 5 is Thursday night at Houston. Golden State will play its longest playoff round after closing out its first two series in five games. Golden State got the ball with 1:27 to play down 94-91 and Thompson and Curry each missed contested 3-pointers. Golden State trailed 91-86 with 3:30 left following a pair of free throws by Eric Gordon, then Curry converted a three-point play moments later. Harden scored 15 points in the second quarter as Houston used a 25-7 run to take command.

So we feel we will do very well.” As a tennis pro and coach here in the Bahamas, Rolle said it would be good if they can get some more funding to assist the players to get to more tournaments around the world to improve on their game. “They just need to get more tournaments under their belt because these guys are talented,” Rolle stressed. “But these guys are looking forward to it, so we

are going to go there and give it our best shot.” The Bahamas will have to finish in the top two in order to get promoted to zone II for 2019. At age 22, Major Jr has played in three ties since he began in 2012. He is still looking for his first singles victory, but is 1-1 in doubles. He also played on the team that lost to Bolivia last year. Newman, also 22, is back after missing last year’s tie because of school commitments. He made his debut in 2016 in four matches, going a perfect 4-0 in singles, including the clinching 2-0 win over Jamaica to advance to group two. As the newest member of the team, 24-year-old Turnquest has been one of the top local players in the country. He has played extensively in various tournaments in the Caribbean as a junior and a budding senior player. Fresh on the heels of the men’s trip, the BLTA will get ready to send the women’s team off to the

Fed Cup. The team, captained by Larikah Russell, will comprise of Kerrie Cartwright, Danielle Thompson and Simone Pratt. They will play in Guayaquil, Ecuador, July 18-21 against six other countries in two different pools with the two winners advancing to the American Zone Group 1 in 2019. “We are happy that we have our elite Fed Cup team back,” Weir stated. “Over the past three years, we had to resort to using the junior players, which was good because they got to wet their feet. “Now we have the elite players back. They won in 2013 in El Salvador and we feel that they can do it again.” In between those two trips, the BLTA will be sending a junior team off in the first week of July to the Dominican Republic. The team will comprise of three girls and three boys. “We will be quite busy over the next three months with our national teams travelling,” Weir noted.

FOUR-MAN BODYBUILDING TEAM LIVES UP TO EXPECTATIONS IN MONTREAL By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE four-man team didn’t achieve the success that manager Wellington ‘Cat’ Sears had anticipated. But head coach Leonardo ‘Nardo’ Dean said they performed up to their expectations. The team returned home from the IFBB Elite Pro in Montreal, Canada, over the weekend where Gemo Smith was second in the men’s masters physique and fourth in the men’s open physique, a category that saw Tarran Knowles placed second in the men’s open, while Paul ‘Mighty Mouse’ Wilson and Giovanni Farrington got second and third respectively in the combined men’s bodybuilding under-80 kilogram class. “The competition went very well. They had one on Saturday and one on Sunday,” Dean said. “Some of the Saturday night competitors who participated in their regional championships crossed over and [participated in the international show on Sunday night. “We had a chance to see some of them so we knew what we were up against and we were ready for the challenge,” said Dean.

“The only damper on the show was the fact that they combined some of the categories in both the physique and bodybuilding, which created somewhat of a disadvantage to some of the athletes, based on their heights and sizes. But overall, the team performed very well and they represented the 242. I was very proud of their performances. “The judges got a chance to talk to them after the competition and let them know what they had to work on. We found out that the physique class is now treading back towards the slimmer guys again as opposed to the bigger guys. So the trends are something confusing. So all we can do is prepare to do our best.” Dean thanked the supporters and sponsors who assisted the team in getting off to Canada. As the most experienced competitor on the team, Wilson said his goal was to win his division and compete for his pro card in the pose down. “The judges gave up one point that separated me from my fellow competitor, who got his pro card, which told me that if the tables had turned, that would have been me,” Wilson said. “So it was kind of upsetting, but

I got the critique from the judges on what I need to work on. “But all in all, the silver medal was the best performance that I had, considering that I did nationals last weekend.” Farrington, the only middleweight competitor, said he wasn’t disappointed in his overall finish. “I am grateful for the competition. It may not have been the colour medal that I wanted, but I am still grateful, I am still humble for being able to compete

in my second international show abroad. I got some great critique from the judges and I will go back to the drawing board and work on them.” Farrington said he enjoyed himself at the show. “I had fun at the prejudging and I had fun at the final,” he said. “I was a bit nervous at first, but I shook it off and I went out there and gave it my all. That’s why I am so grateful,” he said. “The objective for me right now is to take the critique from the judges and

tweak the two minors things I was schooled on and come back even better.” He thanked Dean for being there as a coach, calling him “the best coach that a guy can have” because he’s always there for him. Smith thanked all of the persons who helped them in getting to Canada. He noted that the competition was very stiff. “I didn’t do as well as I had hoped coming up here in the men’s physique category,” he said. “I wanted to get my card, but that wasn’t in the cards for

this particular trip. Speaking with the judges after the show, I know what I have to go back to the drawing board and work on to come back better for my next competition.” Hopefully the next time he competes, Smith said he will perform to the level that he can earn his pro card. Also during the competition, Sears served as one of the judges on the panel. Dean said he helped the team out tremendously as the manager.

SOTO, 19, HITS 3-RUN HR IN 1ST START AS NATS TOP PADRES 10-2 WASHINGTON (AP) — Juan Soto, the youngest player in the majors at 19, hit a three-run homer in his first career start as the Washington Nationals defeated the San Diego Padres 10-2 on Monday night. Mark Reynolds had two solo home runs for the Nationals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Bryce Harper had a homer and an RBI double. Soto’s drive highlighted a five-run second inning. The promising outfielder, who played for three minor league teams this season, connected off Robbie Erlin (1-3). Soto also singled. Soto’s homer travelled an estimated 442 feet. He earned a standing ovation and responded by taking a curtain call. Per Baseball-Reference.com, Soto became the first teenager to hit a home run in a major league game since Harper on September 30, 2012. Gio Gonzalez (5-2) allowed two runs and two hits in seven innings. YANKEES 10, RANGERS 5 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Gleyber Torres hit two of the four Yankees homers off Bartolo Colon

and New York denied the Texas starter a milestone victory only three days before his 45th birthday. Aaron Judge and Neil Walker also went deep against Colon. Judge’s 12th homer, leading off the fifth, snapped a 4-all tie and put the Yankees ahead to stay. Aaron Hicks added a two-run shot in the ninth for New York, which had a season-high 10 extra-base hits. It was the third straight game the Yankees hit at least four homers, marking the first time in team history they’ve done that. The Rangers were the last team to accomplish that feat, in May 2011. Colon (2-2) allowed six runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in his 178th career loss. The portly right-hander remained one win short of matching Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marchial’s 243 victories, the most by a player born in the Dominican Republic. No. 9 hitter Torres, the rookie second baseman in his 25th career game, was three months old when Colon made his big league debut on April 4, 1997. Torres hit a two-run homer in the second, and his solo shot in the sixth, his sixth

homer of the season, ended Colon’s night. Masahiro Tanaka (5-2) limited the Rangers to three hits over five innings, but gave up two homers. PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 0 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nick Pivetta struck out seven in seven innings, and Nick Williams and pinchhitter Aaron Altherr each homered to lead Philadelphia over Atlanta. The Phillies took the opener of the three-game series and moved within a half-game of the Braves for first place in the NL East. Atlanta starter Mike Foltynewicz faced Pivetta for the fourth time already this season, and the righthanders delivered outings worthy of two teams fighting for first. Pivetta (4-2) allowed only four hits, walked one and won his third straight start. Hector Neris finished the five-hitter for his ninth save. Foltynewicz (3-3) gave up six hits in six innings. The lone run he permitted came when Williams homered in the fourth. The Phillies have gone deep in 16 straight games. Altherr batted for Pivetta in the seventh and crushed a two-run homer off Shane Carle. ROCKIES 2, DODGERS 1 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pinch-hitter Carlos Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single in the eighth inning and Colorado edged Los Angeles to move into first place in the NL West. German Marquez (3-5) pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and Gerardo Parra homered for the Rockies, who passed slumping Arizona for the top spot in the division. Wade Davis worked the ninth for his major leagueleading 17th save in 19 chances. The loss snapped the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak as they returned home after sweeping three games against the Nationals. Los Angeles committed two errors in the eighth and another in the ninth in the first of 19 meetings with the Rockies this season. Dodgers starter Walker Buehler gave up one run and two hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked none. Max Muncy homered for Los Angeles, and Pedro Baez (1-3) took the loss. CARDINALS 6, ROYALS 0 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas pitched a four-hitter for his first major league shutout, and Tyler O’Neill homered for the third straight game and drove in four runs to lead St. Louis over Kansas City.

Mikolas (6-0) threw 109 pitches and struck out a career-high nine. The Cardinals won for the third time in four games and beat the Royals for the fifth straight time. O’Neill’s three-run homer capped a four-run third inning in which the Cardinals strung together five two-out hits. O’Neill’s double in the fifth scored Marcell Ozuna, who broke an 0-for-22 slump with an RBI single. Matt Carpenter also homered as part of a threehit night. Ian Kennedy (1-5) gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings. He has lost his last five decisions and hasn’t won since April 7. The struggling Royals have dropped eight of nine. METS 2, MARLINS 0 NEW YORK (AP) — Jason Vargas returned to the rotation with five excellent innings, AJ Ramos pitched out of a basesloaded jam in the sixth and New York blanked Miami for its fourth straight victory. Asdrubal Cabrera had an RBI double and pinchhitter Wilmer Flores added a run-scoring single for the Mets. The 35-year-old Vargas (1-3) had his previous turn skipped after three sloppy outings to open the season, but he shut down the Marlins with changeups and guile for his first win with the Mets. Ten of his outs came via the change, and he struck out seven without reaching 90 mph even once with his fastball. He allowed two hits and a walk before leaving after 86 pitches. Jeurys Familia worked the ninth to cap a five-hitter for his 13th save and New York’s second shutout this season. Elieser Hernandez (0-1) allowed a run and five hits over five innings in his second major league start. BREWERS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana and Lorenzo Cain homered off Zack Greinke as Milwaukee defeated skidding Arizona. Jake Lamb homered for the Diamondbacks, who have lost five in a row and 11 of 12 — scoring just 24 runs in that span. Greinke (3-3) struck out nine, walked none and gave up five hits in six innings, but the home runs did him in. He slipped to 1-4 at Miller Park after a 15-0 stretch while pitching for the Brewers from May 9, 2011 to June 6, 2012. Chase Anderson (4-3) threw six strong innings in his return to the rotation. He’d been ill and on the 10-day disabled list. He allowed three hits in his first start since May 6. Corey Knebel earned his second save.

ORIOLES 3, WHITE SOX 2 CHICAGO (AP) — Manny Machado, Adam Jones and Mark Trumbo homered, helping Andrew Cashner and Baltimore beat Chicago. Machado hit his 15th homer, moving into a tie for the major league lead with Boston’s Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez. Trumbo connected against Hector Santiago, and Jones went deep after leaving Sunday’s 5-0 loss to the Red Sox due to an illness. Cashner (2-5) got his first win since April 5, helped by some terrific relief work from Mychal Givens. Cashner pitched five-plus innings and was charged with two runs and eight hits. The last-place Orioles (15-32) had dropped four of five heading into the fourgame series between two of the AL’s worst teams. Jose Abreu, Matt Davidson and Leury Garcia had two hits apiece for Chicago (13-31), which had won three of four. Santiago (0-2) went six innings but remains winless in four starts and nine relief appearances this year — with the White Sox losing all 13 games.

TWINS 4, TIGERS 2 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Logan Morrison forced in the go-ahead run with a four-pitch walk in the eighth inning after striking out in his first three at-bats, propelling Minnesota past Detroit. Jose Berrios (5-4) struck out nine, giving up just three hits and two walks over eight innings. Fernando Rodney closed for his 10th save in 13 tries. Rodney, who spent the first eight seasons of his major league career with the Tigers, has converted eight straight saves in 10 consecutive scoreless innings. The more relevant reunion was the return of Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire to Minnesota, where he managed the Twins for 13 seasons. This was the first game between the division rivals since Gardenhire was hired by Detroit. Nicholas Castellanos gave the Tigers an early 2-0 lead with a home run and an RBI single. NFL unanimously approves Tepper’s $2.2 billion purchase of Panthers By PAUL NEWBERRY AP Sports Writer ATLANTA (AP) — The new owner of the Carolina Panthers is committed to keeping the team in the Carolinas. And Charlotte is his clearly his first choice. But David Tepper left a bit of wiggle room on his first day as owner of the team. The NFL unanimously approved Tepper’s $2.2 billion purchase of the team from Jerry Richardson yesterday, leading to immediate questions about the new owner’s thoughts on replacing 22-yearold Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. “What’s the name of the team? Carolina Panthers. It’s going to be the Carolina Panthers,” Tepper said. “And that means this team has to have some kind of presence in the Carolinas and last time I saw, how many are there? That’s right, there’s two of them.” Tepper seemed to be implying that he might consider other cities in North and South Carolina if efforts to build a new stadium in Charlotte fall through. The lease with Bank of America Stadium runs for only one more season. Tepper also reiterated several times that the largest city in the Carolinas is the best place for the team. “There is a logical place for this team, and it’s Charlotte,” he said. “And far as a new stadium, again, you’re asking me too much and the only thing I have a market on now is lack of knowledge. I’ll call it stupidity, so I’ve got that down. I’ll learn a lot more in the future.” Tepper’s purchase was the first order of business at the league’s spring meeting in Atlanta. The city was passed over in MLS’ latest round of expansion. “The first thing I care about is winning. The second thing I care about is winning. And the third thing I care about is?” he said, waiting for the media to give the obvious answer. “That’s on and off the field. That includes charity aspect, community aspect and how

you make a community better. So you win a lot of ways, and I don’t like losing in any way.” Rivera said he looks forward to working with the new owner. “He has a sense and a feel for football and he has been around it,” the coach said. “Eventually I know we will sit down and talk some football and talk about this team.” While the owners were approving Tepper, the new-look Panthers were holding their first organised workouts some 250 miles away in Charlotte. “For a lot of people, I am sure they are ready for some closure and for that transition to start,” tight end Greg Olsen said. “I think this transition has been inevitable for a little while since it was announced that the team would be sold. Favre told Sports Illustrated he took as many as 14 Vicodin at one time during the 1995 season in Green Bay. Favre won the first of his three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards that season. “It is really amazing, as I think back, how well I played that year,” Favre said. “That was an MVP year for me. But that year, when I woke up in the morning, my first thought was, ‘I gotta get more pills.’” Favre said his issues with pills caused him to spend 28 days at a centre in Rayville, Louisiana, in the early 1990s. Favre also says he spent 28 days in rehab “strictly for drinking” in 1998. The story also mentions a previously reported 72-day stint at a Kansas City rehab centre in the mid-1990s to get off Vicodin. “When I drank, I drank to excess,” Favre said. “So when I went in the second time, to the place in Kansas, I remember vividly fighting them in there. They said drinking was the gateway drug for me, and they were right, absolutely right, but I wouldn’t admit it. I will never forget one of the nurses. I had it all figured out. I fought with this nurse all the time. I would not admit the drinking problem. At the end, she said to me, ‘You’ll be back.’ “I was back. 1998. Guess who was waiting there when I walked in — that same nurse.” Favre played in the NFL from 1991-2010 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

We can’t think about the past. We just have to worry about this opportunity. We have a Game 5 at home, and we have to make the most of it.”

Cleveland is hoping James’ once quiet supporting cast continues its surge in Boston.
