14 swimmers named for the Commonwealth Youth Games By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net s the country prepares to host the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, expect Team Bahamas to continue to roll out its rosters for the respective disciplines. The Bahamas Swimming Federation named a 14-member swim team for the upcoming event, to be hosted July 17-23 in New Providence. The swim team is made up of 10 boys and four girls. The girls’ team will be led by standout Lilly Higgs, 16, who has

also represented the Bahamas on CISC, FINA World Junior and FINA World Championship teams. In April, she was the high-point scorer for the Bahamas with her 65 points, as they captured the 2017 CARIFTA Swimming Championships for the third time in four years. Other team members include 16-year-old Victoria Russell, 15-year-old Virginia Stamp and 13-year-old Katelyn Cabral. The boys’ team will also be led by several of the top swimmers the country last saw perform at the CARIFTA meet. Davante Carey (14), who totalled 43 points, Kevon Lockhart (14)

with 38 points and Izaak Bastian (15) who scored 37 points, will all be members of the Commonwealth Youth Games team. Other members include Miller Albury (17), Trent Albury (14), Peter Morley (15), Ian Pinder (14), William Russell (16), Alec Sands (17) and Kenaz Sweeting (16) The CYG will feature 70 countries and thousands of participating athletes across nine sporting disciplines. Athletes will compete in athletics, swimming, beach soccer, boxing, cycling, judo, rugby sevens, tennis and beach volleyball. It will be the first time judo, beach soccer and beach volleyball will be con-

tested at the event. The CYG facilitates boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18 and this year’s event will mark the first time in 50 years that the Caribbean will host a Commonwealth Games event, coming off the Empire Games that was staged in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966. It was just about a year and-ahalf ago when St Lucia pulled out of hosting the games and the Bahamas put in a bid with Glasgow and Sri Lanka. In 2000, the Commonwealth Games Federation, headed by president Louise Martin of Scotland,

DAN MARINO AND FRIENDS WEEKEND ALL SET FOR MAY 25 By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas and the Miami Dolphins continue to develop their mutually beneficial relationship with another edition of the Dan Marino and Friends Weekend. The weekend’s itinerary, May 25-27, includes busy schedule events, giving Bahamian fans an opportunity to interact with legends of the closest NFL franchise to the Bahamas. Following Thursday’s official welcome, action begins Friday with the Marino and Friends Golf Classic with a shot gun start for 24 teams at Ocean Club. Each golf foursome includes the exclusive opportunity to play with a Miami Dolphins legend or celebrity. The day on the course will be followed by the corresponding awards luncheon and the evening closes out with a “Bahamas Bash” hosted by the organisation. The focus shifts to the football field, a familiar spot for the visiting iconic players at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium. First up will be the Dolphins Academy Youth Football and Cheer Clinics. There will also be a mini flag football tournament featuring teams from Nassau, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Exuma. The tournament will feature play in youth and adult divisions. Youth co-ed teams will feature play in the 6-9, 10-13, 1417 age groups while the adults will play in men’s, women and co-ed divisions. The highlight of the schedule will be the flag football game between the Dolphins Legends and the Bahamas Legends. A Junkanoothemed celebration will close out the event. Dwight Coleby on the move again, to leave Jayhawks By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net COLLEGIATE basketball player Dwight Coleby is on the move once again and looks to close out his career with a third programme. Coleby announced his intention to leave the Kansas Jayhawks following his graduation from the institution in Lawrence, Kansas, last week. As a post-grad transfer, the 6’9”, 240-pound forward will be eligible to play immediately for the Fall 2017 season and has already been a sought after target for several programmes.

Coleby has been linked to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and VCU Rams as favourites. Other schools that have expressed interest include SMU, Stephen F Austin, Hampton, George Washington, DePaul and Seton Hall. He graduated with a communications degree. “In talking with coach (Self) about my future, I feel that this is what is best for my potential opportunities,” he said to KU Athletics. “I would like to thank the coaching staff for allowing me to come here. I’d like to thank my teammates for their support the past two years. I’d like to thank the fans for cheering me on and believing in me. KU is a part of my heart. It’s my alma mater and I am proud to have earned my degree from KU. I will always be a Jayhawk.” Jayhawks head coach Bill Self said he supported Coleby’s decision as he prepares to position himself for a career in pro basketball. “Dwight and I have visited about this multiple times since the end of our season and he has worked so hard academically to put himself in a position to make this decision. We wish Dwight nothing but the very best moving forward. He felt the opportunity to go to a place and have the option to play quite a bit more and have more of a significant role would enhance his chances to play professionally in the future,” Self said.

As a junior, Coleby averaged 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in his first season in a Jayhawks uniform. He was already set to spend the 2015-16 season on the sidelines as a transfer but he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a light team workout in October 2015 and had to undergo a gruelling rehab process. “We have truly enjoyed Dwight the past two years,” Self said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. It was unfortunate he tore his ACL his first year but he played a key role, especially late in the season, to the success we had this year. We not only support him but also agree that this could potentially help his post-college professional options. Dwight will always be looked upon by our programme as a Jayhawk. We respect everything that he’s done in the time he has been here.” Coleby and the Jayhawks ended their season with a loss to Oregon in the NCAA Regional Final or Elite Eight. The Jayhawks ended the season 31-5. It was the second consecutive season they reached the round just short of the Final Four. They also tied an NCAA record with 13 consecutive conference titles and set a new mark with 28 straight NCAA appearances. James, Love help Cavs rout Celtics 117-104 in opener By KYLE HIGHTOWER AP Sports Writer BOSTON (AP) — LeBron James had 38 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics 117-104 last night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Kevin Love added a playoff career-high 32 points and had 12 rebounds to help the Cavaliers improve to 9-0 in the first three rounds of the playoffs. They opened 10-0 last season en route to their first NBA title. James scored at will in the first half and the Cavs built a 26-point lead. Love opened up the floor for James, burying outside jumpers and forcing Boston to leave defenders one-on-one with James. Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder led the Celtics with 21 points each. Isaiah Thomas had 17 points. Boston missed 11 of its first 14 shots. Game 2 is Friday night in Boston.

Love averaged a quiet 13.8 points in the first two rounds, then broke out against a Boston team that knocked him out of the 2015 playoffs when he became tangled with Kelly Olynyk and dislocated his shoulder. The shoulder was working just fine yesterday, and he scored in the paint and from the outside. Things got a little testy in the third quarter when Boston’s Marcus Smart and Cleveland’s Tristan Thompson got nose-to-nose and had to be separated by referees. Some jawing continued briefly before James stepped in to pull Thompson away. Smart and Thompson were called for double technical on the play, but got tangled again a few minutes later. This time, Smart fell to the floor during that exchange, drawing a foul on Thompson. The Celtics found some energy after the incident, closing the third quarter on an 11-3 run to pull to 92-75. It didn’t last long, though, as the

Cavs quickly got the lead back up to 20. James picked apart every defender that the Celtics threw at him in the first half. He backed down defenders to set up 15-foot fade away jumpers. Other times, he simply took defenders off the dribble or sliced through double-teams on the way to layups. Boston also seemed content to make every switch created by Cleveland screens, leading to some awkward matchups for James in the first half. In one such instance, Olynyk found himself one-on-one with James, who promptly drove past him and drew a foul at the rim. The Celtics couldn’t get anything working when they had the ball, held to just 35 per cent from the field in the first half and 2 for 16 from beyond the arc. The Cavs also held Thomas at bay offensively. He was 3 for 11 overall and 1 for 4 from the 3-point line after 24 minutes.

Nat Moore, who played alongside Marino and fellow Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese, outlined the goals for the immediate future of the

programme. “The Bahamas has always been pro Dolphin,” Moore said. “You’ve been some of our biggest fans. We look forward to coming to Nassau and visiting with our fans and as far as we’re concerned the Bahamas is our family.” In 2014, the Dolphins and the Bahamas’ Ministry of Tourism launched their partnership of a five-year deal. The promotion also includes the Bahamas Bash Zone at the Sun Life Stadium, home of the Dolphins, where the 100-level themed in Bahamian decor and prizes are offered by the Ministry of Tourism.

hosted the first Commonwealth Youth Games in Edinburgh. The second games was in 2004 in Bendigo, Australia. It went to Pune, India for the third edition in 2008 and The Isle of Man hosted the 2011 with the 5th edition in Samoa in 2015. Seven sports were contested at the 2015 Games in Samoa. However, the Bahamas did not participate due to being sidetracked by fear of a dengue and chikungunya outbreak. The first Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Scotland in August 2000 where 733 athletes from 14 countries competed in eight sports over three days. The second edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games took place in Aus-

tralia in December 2004 and saw over 1,000 athletes and officials from 22 countries in a 10-sport programme. The third Youth Games were held in the Indian city of Pune October 12-18, 2008 where 71 nations and territories participated in nine sports. A decision was taken by the Commonwealth Games Federation at their general assembly in 2005 to move the Youth Games outside of the Olympic Games year and in doing so awarded the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games to the Isle of Man. At the Isle of Man Games, The Bahamas competed in two of eight disciplines - athletics (track and field) and cycling. The other sports were badminton, boxing, gymnastics for men and women, rugby 7s and swimming.

The former Ole Miss Rebel said it was difficult to sit out, but he was committed to improvement on his game and playing for iconic head coach Bill Self. In his freshman season

with the Rebels, Coleby played in 28 games with four starts and averaged 2.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in 10.4 minutes. He shot 47 per cent from the floor, and finished with 18 blocked shots, fifth on the team. As a sophomore, he averaged 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds and was also named an SEC Academic Honour Roll selection in two seasons with the Rebels.

Herrmann’s homer lifts D-backs 5-4, Mets’ 7th straight loss By BOB BAUM AP Sports Writer PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Herrmann homered off Rafael Montero leading off the 11th inning, giving the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-4 victory yesterday and sending the New York Mets to their season-high seventh straight loss. Montero (0-3) relieved to start the 11th, and Herrmann worked the count full, fouled off a pitch and connected on a belt-high fastball for his first game-ending home run in the major leagues. New York went 0-6 in Milwaukee and Arizona, the Mets’ longest winless trip since 1999, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. At 16-23, New York dropped seven games under .500 for the first time September 2014. Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) walked Matt Reynolds and Lucas Duda with two outs in the 11th before throwing a called third strike past Jose Reyes. Making his second start since a

three-day suspension for failing to show up for a game, Matt Harvey allowed three runs, six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings, leaving with a 4-3 lead. Jake Lamb’s two-run homer in the third was the 11th home run in eight starts this season off Harvey, whose fastball reached 98 mph. After giving up an RBI double to Paul Goldschmidt, Harvey struck out the Arizona slugger twice. Mets starters have gone 17 consecutive games without getting an out in the seventh inning, tying the club high set in 2002. Happ hit his second homer in his third major league game and Addison Russell also went deep as Chicago returned to .500 after a lackluster road trip. NL MVP Kris Bryant added two hits in his first appearance after missing three games with an illness. The Cubs (19-19) had dropped seven of nine, including four of their last six at division leaders Colorado and St. Louis. Schwarber’s continued trouble in the leadoff spot and the shaky performance so far by the rotation had created some angst for a fan base expecting more of the same after Chicago’s historic World Series championship last year, but no one seemed a bit worried around the team. (AP) — Cameron Maybin had five hits, including a tying double in the 11th inning, and Albert Pujols singled home the winning run moments later to give Los Angeles a victory over Chicago. Chicago erased a threerun deficit in the ninth and went ahead 6-5 on Tim Anderson’s solo homer in the 11th off Yusmeiro Petit (1-0). But it was the Angels who pulled off the final comeback. RAYS 6, INDIANS 4 CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Dickerson hit two of Tampa Bay’s season-high five home runs in a victory over Cleveland. Dickerson hit solo home runs in the third and fifth off Danny Salazar (2-4). Colby Rasmus and Derek Norris also hit solo shots off Cleveland’s starter while Tim Beckham hit a tworun homer off Shawn Armstrong. Jake Odorizzi (3-2) allowed four runs in six innings. YANKEES 7, ROYALS 1 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer, Chris Carter added a two-run shot and CC Sabathia got back on track as New York rolled over Kansas City. Pitching on six days’ rest, Sabathia (3-2) went 6 2/3 shutout innings to win for the first time since April 15. Sanchez drilled an 0-1 pitch from Jason Hammel (1-5) to center field with nobody out in the third, and Carter pounded a 1-1 pitch to almost the same place with two down in the fourth.

ATHLETICS 9, MARINERS 6 SEATTLE (AP) — Matt Joyce hit a two-run homer and Mark Canha added a three-run shot in a five-run ninth inning that rallied Oakland over Seattle. Oakland squandered a 4-1 lead thanks to a key two-run error in the seventh and Kyle Seager’s solo home run in the eighth that gave Seattle a 5-4 lead. But with a struggling Edwin Diaz removed from the closer role earlier in the day, Steve Cishek was asked to get the final three outs for the Mariners in just his second appearance of the season. Cishek (0-1) was unable to finish the job, giving up a leadoff single to Rajai Davis and watching Joyce hit his fifth homer of the year to give Oakland the lead. Ronaldo scored early in each half as Madrid defeated 10-man Celta Vigo 4-1 yesterday to retake the league lead from Barcelona and move within a point of winning the title.
