Charlton, coach Greene get top honours in Big Ten By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

he Bahamian connection at Purdue University got some exciting news as head coach Lonnie Greene was unanimously selected as the women’s Big Ten Coach of the Year, while sprint and hurdles specialist Devynne Charlton was the unanimous selection for the women’s Track Athlete of the Championships. The double honour came after the duo over the weekend helped Purdue win its first Big Ten Outdoor women’s team title since 1999. “It’s always an honour when your peers dub you as the coach of the year,” said Greene on the Boilermakers’ athletic website. “In a league like the Big Ten where some of the best coaches in the country practice this craft, for them to deem you worthy of such a great honour is such a great blessing from the Lord.” Greene, however, didn’t accept the full success of the Boilermakers. He attributed it to the support

in me getting this honour. Every head coach is only as good as his assistants,” he said. “And to the athletes under my charge, I am grateful because it was them who did the work.” Greene is the second Purdue

women’s head coach to take home the women’s Big Ten Coach of the Year honours outdoors. He joins Ben Paolillo, who won the award in 1999 after leading the women’s team to the Big Ten title that year. Greene has led the Boilermak-

ers to their highest outdoor programme ranking in history at No. 15, which the team has been ranked twice this season. This week, the team checks in at No. 16 nationally. He also has led the women’s team to the top overall ranking in the Great Lakes Region in every poll, indoors and outdoors, since the beginning of the year. Greene’s women scored 133 points at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, which is second in programme history, behind only the 1999 championship team’s 143 points. That year, the conference had three fewer teams. Charlton, in her senior year, was one of Purdue’s women who won five event Big Ten titles over the weekend to pave the way for the team title. In her role, workhorse Charlton captured three gold medals in a span of 60 minutes as she alone collected a total of 26.5 points to contribute to the Boilermakers’ success. She won the 100-metre dash - one of just two women in

Ijeoma-Delva, Slatter top leaderboard in the National Bowling Championships By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net UCHENNA IjeomaDelva, urged on and encouraged by her arch-rivals Driskell Rolle and Joy Lockhart, is making the most of her debut in the Bahamas Bowling Federation’s 2017 BTC National Bowling Championships. On Monday night at Mario’s Bowling and Family Entertainment Palace, Ijeoma-Delva surprised herself when she took the initial lead at the end of the first block of five games in the ladies’ division of the two-week championships. She surged ahead a total of 960 pinfalls, nine ahead of Rolle, a former national champion who sits in second with 951. Lockhart, the defending champion, is in third with 907. Meanwhile on the men’s side, as expected, the leaderboard is headed by defending champion David Slatter with 1,033 pins, followed by former champion Leonardo ‘Lee’ Davis with 1,026 and Derrick Burrows

to push hard during the competition. “After my second game, I said I have to make up for

it,” said Ijeoma-Delva, who got off to a disappointing start in the first two games, but made up for it in the final three games when they switched lanes. “I feel pretty good. I’m glad that I’m where I’m at because you’ve been hearing the same old names and I expected to hear the same old names. But I’m glad that they can hear a fresh new name because nobody, not even myself, expected for me to be up there.” On Thursday, the second block of games for the top bowlers will take place. Ijeoma-Delva said she’s hoping that she can be right in the pack with the rest of the bowlers so that she can get a shot at pushing herself to a spot in the live television roll off. “A lot of people have been pushing me, telling me that I can do it,” she said. “People keep telling me that I bowl some good balls and I should try it. “People have pushed me to try out for the national trials and the first time I did it, I made the national team. Now they are pushing me to

try out for the nationals, so hopefully I can do well here too.” Ijeoma-Delva has already secured her berth on the national team that will travel to Guatemala in June. She’s hoping that she can make her presence felt here at the nationals. As the defending champion, Lockhart said she expects to be the hunted as she holds the title, but she’s not going to let the competition get to her. “The first night is all about just getting on the lane and feeling it out, seeing what you have to do on the second lap around,” she said. “The conditions were pretty smooth in my opinion. “So I just need to stay focused since I’ve found out how the lane is running. As I am the one being hunted, I know it will be very competitive. I know if anybody wants to go to the World Cup, they have to get past me, so I’m not going to make it easy for them.” Rounding out the top six

Ministry will be sports friendly, says the new minister By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE new Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Michael Pintard, comes into office with a lot of promising reviews from our various sporting executives. While Pintard was just sworn in on Monday night at Government House, he indicated that his first order of business would be to meet with the stakeholders of the ministry. He noted that the ministry would be sports friendly, something that sat well with the executives, who indicated that they are looking forward to meeting him.

Bahamas Bowling Federation President Sonith Lockhart said Pintard has his endorsement because of the vibrancy that he brings to the ministry, especially because of his commitment to culture. “I remember after every election he and his team also have some type of skit to bring the whole community of the Bahamas something to laugh about,” Pintard said. “Honestly, he is a poet, but he’s what most Bahamians want to be. He will make a great Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture.” For the sport, which is currently hosting its BTC National Championships at Mario’s Bowling and Family Entertainment Palace, Lockhart said they would like to invite Pintard to come into the venue and get a first-hand experience of what the bowlers have to endure to compete at the international level. He said the sport has become so competitive that the amateurs are now competing with the professionals, which means that they have to look at ways of providing more incentives for the bowlers to compete on an even par. Bahamas Cricket Association President Greg Taylor said his only concern is that the new minister will be interested in sports, especially cricket. “Despite what people say about sailing,

tine’s College graduate. “She’s got that thing that only comes from within. I’m not surprised that she was named Big Ten Athlete of the Championships. Her performance was far above almost every female competing in the championship.” Charlton’s 100m dash title was the second of her career and came with a wind-legal school-record time of 11.31 seconds. Her 100m hurdles time was a windy (+3.6) 12.67 seconds, which is tied for

2nd among qualifying marks in the country this year. She was also fifth in the 200m dash, her fourth event of the day on Sunday. Charlton is the fifth Purdue woman to win an outdoor Athlete of the Championships award and the first to do so with the track distinction. Dani Bunch was the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships in 2014 for her efforts in the shot put and hammer throw, while

Kara Patterson earned the Field Athlete of the Championships for her work in the javelin in 2008. Angela Craft was the Big Ten Athlete of the Championships in 2001, before the conference designated separate awards for track and field athletes, while Corissa Yasen was Big Ten Athlete of the Championships in 1995. Charlton’s award adds to an historic season, which has also seen her win the indoor Big Ten Track

Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships awards. She earned first team All-America honours indoors with the 60m hurdles after finishing second in the country. This year alone, Charlton has five Big Ten gold medals, including the three she won over the weekend. The Boilermakers now prepare for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. The official draws will be announced later this week.

PINTARD: MINISTRY WILL BE SPORTS FRIENDLY FROM PAGE 1 Taylor said they feel disrespected that sailing has been projected as the national sport. He said that while they have seen a decline in the participation of competitors, they have hired the service of a level III coach from Trinidad & Tobago, who will be working towards the revitalisation of the sport. “We decided that for one year, we will put some funds aside to see if we can get the numbers up in the association,” he said. “We have another coach in the schools and so they will be working to increase the numbers on the youth in the sport.” To Pintard, Taylor said they are looking forward to their meeting and putting their plans forward and to hear what he has to say and the part he will play in the way forward. Bahamas Swimming Federation President Algernon Cargill said he’s excited about working with Pintard. “He’s someone who has a keen understanding of young people, he have an understanding of sports, he’s someone who is open minded and he’s someone who is excited about moving sports forward,” Cargill said. “I think he will make an excellent minister and he would certainly advocate for all young people and for the Bahamas in general.” With issues recently mentioned by some of the top competitors in the sport, Cargill said they want to ensure that the swimmers

and athletes on subvention, receive the funding that is due to them and the recommendations that they made on behalf of the BSF is advanced and funds are available for national teams when it’s time to travel. “These are some of the things, as well as the improvement of sports facilities, and the way that the National Sports Authority function in being fairness to all sport,” he pointed out. “The fee structure is one that needs to be reviewed because it makes it very competitive for some athletes and organisations to survive if we have to take the same funding that we get from government and pay to use the facilities to train or to hold a meet.” Having said all of that, Cargill said he’s confident that Pintard will make an excellent choice as the new minister in the triple ministry and they are excited to work with him for the betterment of sports. Bahamas Olympic Commnittee President Wellington Miller said he likes the enthusiasm that Pintard brings to the office. “I believe he will blend very well. Like everyone else, we want sports to grow, we want people to get involved and, as a young man, he knows what it means to inspire them,” Miller said. “I hope that we would share the same ideas to accomplish what is needed for sports to get to the level that it should be. He’s worked there before as a consultant, so he have a good idea of what he’s getting into.” With the BOC getting

ready to host the Commonwealth Youth Games in July, Miller said they are looking forward to bringing Pintard up to speed so that they can have a smooth transition. “I know very little of him, only what I’ve heard,” he said. “In public life, I think he’s a good person to be around. He’s very motivated. I hope that all of us as associations can sit down with him and let him know what our plans are and blend them together to come up with something great.” Bahamas Football Association President Anton Sealey said he has been associated with Pintard for quite a while so he’s aware of his capabilities and he’s hoping that their relationship will continue to flourish. “So I’m looking forward to working with him and seeing how we can further develop sports, not only football or soccer, but sports in general,” he said. “It’s a new thing and with new things, we have to have a lot of enthusiasm. But I want to congratulate the out-going minister (Dr Daniel Johnson) for the support that he gave to soccer and I wish him all of the best in the next phase of his career.” Having just recently hosted both the CONCACAF Qualifier and the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup at the newly constructed facilities at Malcolm Park, Sealey said they would be looking for the support of the ministry in putting on future events of that magnitude.

Swanson hits tiebreaking homer, Braves get 9-5 win over Blue Jays By IAN HARRISON Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Dansby Swanson hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning, Freddie Freeman also had a two-run shot and the Atlanta Braves beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-5 last night, sweeping their two-game series. Swanson snapped a 5-all tie with a leadoff drive to centre off Danny Barnes (0-1). Freeman hit his NL-leading 14th home run, matching Yankees slugger Aaron Judge for most in the majors. It was Freeman’s second homer in two games. Matt Kemp had two hits and four RBIs for the Braves, who have won four of five after losing eight of their previous nine. Kevin Pillar homered and had two hits for Toronto. Pillar’s sixth homer, a solo shot off Jamie Garcia, was his ML-leading 51st hit. The Blue Jays have lost two straight following a season-high five game winning streak. Jose Ramirez (2-1) pitched 1 2/3

innings for the win. Kemp hit a two-run single in the first and the Braves took a 3-0 lead on Jace Peterson’s RBI single in the fourth. Garcia held Toronto hitless until Pillar doubled to begin the fourth. Justin Smoak drew a twoout walk and both runners scored on a double by Devon Travis. Freeman made it 5-2 by connecting off Marco Estrada in the fifth, but Pillar replied with his homer in the bottom half. Toronto chased Garcia and tied it in the sixth. Ramirez came on after Smoak’s one-out walk and gave up a double to Travis, an RBI single to Darwin Barney and an RBI groundout by Ezequiel Carrera. The Blue Jays put runners at first and second with none out against Arodys Vizcaino in the eighth but couldn’t score. Travis struck out after failing to get a bunt down and Barney lined into a double play with pinch-runner Darrell Ceciliani doubled off 2nd.

Manchester City should be guaranteed one. Arsenal — for the first time in 20 years — is the favourite to miss out. Both teams won home games yesterday — City beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 and Arsenal defeated Sunderland 2-0 — to leave them separated by three points heading into the final round of games. Liverpool is the other team in the hunt. City has 75 points, Liverpool 73, and Arsenal 72. Crucially, City has a superior goal difference of 6 and has a benign-looking game, on paper, away to Watford. With Liverpool at home to already-relegated Middlesbrough, Arsenal can only beat Everton and hope for the best. If Arsenal misses out, it will be the first time the club has done so in a full season under manager Arsene Wenger. Sharapova’s popularity doesn’t earn a French Open wild card By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer PARIS (AP) — For Bernard Giudicelli, the fight against doping was more important than Maria Sharapova’s popularity. So he decided not to award her a wild card for the French Open. Giudicelli, the president of the French Tennis Federation, phoned two-time champion Sharapova yesterday to tell her she would not get an invite to play because of her past doping ban. Three other tournaments, including the Italian Open this week, have given her wild cards since her return from a 15-month ban last month, but Giudicelli wasn’t swayed. “While there can be a wild card for return from injury, there can’t be a wild card for return from doping,” Giudicelli said while announcing his decision on a live Facebook broadcast. He accepted a lot of fans wanted to see her play, but

he would not grant special favours. “I read the results of several polls and I could see that about two-thirds were in favour of Maria being granted a wild card. Of course I felt some pressure,” he said. “We did not want to treat Maria Sharapova differently ... Maria won twice here, but we have a huge responsibility.” He felt that offering Sharapova a short cut into the main draw was to send the wrong message in the fight against doping in sports. “She might be very disappointed, but it’s my responsibility, it’s my mission to protect the game and protect the high standards of the game,” he said. “I know that a lot of people might be disappointed by this decision. But nevertheless Roland Garros invests a lot — along with the other Grand Slams, the ATP, and the WTA — into the fight against doping. It was inconceivable to take a decision that would have

been the opposite of this. “I know the media dimension Maria has. I know the expectation fans and broadcasters have. But it didn’t seem possible for me to go above the strong commitment and the respect for the anti-doping code.” Sharapova, who has titles at all four majors, won at Roland Garros in 2012 and 2014. Thanks to wild cards at her first two tournaments,

she lifted her world ranking to outside the top 200 this week. But that wasn’t good enough to make the cut even for the qualifying field at Roland Garros, so she will miss the tournament for a second straight year. The French Open begins on May 28. Sharapova initially was given a two-year suspension after testing positive for the banned heart drug meldonium at last year’s Austral-

ian Open. The Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the ban on appeal, ruling she bore “less than significant fault” in the case and she could not “be considered to be an intentional doper.” Sharapova had been taking meldonium for many years, but overlooked announcements by WADA that it added the drug to its banned list on January 1, 2016.

ROME (AP) — Defending champion Andy Murray was eliminated by local favourite Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-4 before a raucous crowd in his opening match at the Italian Open yesterday. Italy’s top player at No. 29, Fognini frustrated the top-ranked Murray with drop shots and other aggressive play. The unpredictable Fognini led 5-1 in the second set and nearly let Murray force a third set with a series of errors but finally closed it out when he served for the match for a second time. Cavs face top-seeded Celtics By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer

INDEPENDECE, Ohio (AP) — LeBron James is a meticulous dresser on and off the court, so his fashion choice yesterday was no accident. He had worn the sleeveless T-shirt before in practice, but the black cutoff with the picture of a goldand-green leprechaun throwing a punch had deeper meaning this time: The Celtics are next. James will renew his personal rivalry with the NBA’s most storied franchise tonight as the Cavaliers, who have been waiting for an opponent since May 7, open the Eastern Conference finals in Boston at 8:30pm. This will be the sixth time that James has faced the Celtics in the postseason, and his history with them has run from the great to the forgettable. So while the T-shirt was for his alma mater, Akron’s St Vincent-St Mary High School, it was also a nod to the Celtics, the team James has played in the postseason more than any other. And it was a not-sosubtle jab. Remember, this is the same guy who came home from California last June wearing an “Ultimate Warrior” T-shirt after the Cavaliers shocked Golden State to end Cleveland’s half-century title drought.

“They’re a worthy opponent,” said a rather gruff James, who didn’t have much to say about the Celtics or anything else after the Cavs concluded their final practice during a lengthy layoff. “We have to game plan every game. We have to game plan for what they bring to the table. And we have to mentally focus on our challenges that we have every game.” No team in the East gets James’ attention more quickly than the Celtics, who survived an exhausting, seven-game series against Washington to make their first conference final since 2012. James is aiming for his seventh trip to the Finals — a streak shared only by Bill Russell and other members of those famed Celtics teams in the ‘60s — and he’ll have to go through Boston again to get there. The last time he lost before the Finals was in 2010 to the Celtics, who eliminated James in six games in the conference semi-finals. On the way to the locker room following that Game 6 loss, he yanked off his Cavs jersey for what many thought was the last time. Two months later, James took his talents to South Beach. Two years later, he returned to Boston, scored 45 points in Game 7 of the conference finals and led
