Lightning Can Strike Twice By Mike Lightbourn
DID you know lightning strikes during thunderstorms kill more Americans each year than either tornadoes or hurricanes? The Bahamas has recorded its share of lightning tragedies. Only last year, a man was setting up chairs for a beach event in Nassau when he was struck by lightning. Regrettably, he died on the scene. As beautiful as it may be to watch from afar, lightning should be treated with caution and respect. Lightning never strikes twice is a phrase. It means an incident that is extraordinary in nature (and usually unfortunate) won’t happen a second time. However, the truth is lightning can strike twice in the same place. It happened some years ago to a home on the eastern end of the island. Some areas seem to be more prone to strikes. Lightning can cause both house fires and wild fires. Most fires and deaths sparked by lightning occur outdoors. However, no-one wants their home to be struck by lightning once, let alone twice. This begs the question: Does your home have lightning protection? We can expect more lightning storms as we move towards the hot summer months. Lightning Explained Lightning is an electric current. When the ground is hot, it heats the air above it. As this warm air rises, water vapour cools and forms a cloud. When air continues to rise, the cloud mushrooms. In the tops of the clouds, the temperature is below freezing and the water vapour turns into ice. The cloud turns into a thundercloud. Lots of small bits of ice collide with each other as they move around. These collisions cause a buildup of electrical charge. The whole cloud eventually fills up with electrical charges.
Lighter, positively charged particles form at the top of the cloud. Heavier, negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. When the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a huge spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud. And get this. Lightning is so hot, a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. Home Protection Nothing can prevent lighting from striking, but you can prevent home damage by installing a lightning protection system or rod. This provides the electricity with an easy and safe route to the ground. Avoid installing partial lightning protection (such as a grounded weathervane or antenna). This can be more dangerous than having no protection at all. The electricity produced by a lightning strike can travel through conductive surfaces, such as metallic wires, pipes and faucets, within your house. So, stay off old copper landlines, if you still have one. The newer fiber optics are glass based and they cannot conduct electricity. They conduct light. Home occupants who touch running water may be shocked by conducted electricity. Stay away from concrete floors or walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring. Don’t watch a storm from a covered porch. Lightning protection is not a do-it-yourself project and it comes with a price. Only experienced and reputable electricians or contractors should install them.

Automated Irrigation System How To Install A

IRRIGATION systems have become so user friendly in recent years, that many home owners often choose to install their own systems saving themselves up to half of what it would cost to purchase a system and have it professionally installed. For those who maybe considering installing a automated irrigation system, this is a general over view of the process. Armed with this information you should be able to make an informed decision as to whether you would install your own system or maybe have a professional irrigation technician install it for you. You will first need to draw a basic overhead sketch of your property. Show all building structures, then all of your lawn areas, plant beds, walk ways etc. Measure your property and particularly all of the areas to be irrigated. Next you will need to determine what sort of water pressure you have from your water system. If you have a pump and tank system, well its easy, simply read the pressure gauge. If not you will likely need to purchase a gauge that you attach to the end of your faucet, then turn on the faucet the gauge will give you a pound per square inch reading (PSI). This information is important because it will allow you to know how many sprinklers your water system will be able to run at one time. Next you will need to divide your yard into
zones or areas to be watered at one time. This is generally determined by proximity and likeness. Meaning you would usually water all of the lawn in one area at a time and then all the shrubs at one time. Usually you will not mix the two however as it creates complications when it becomes time to set the amount of watering time. Your lawn will require more water than most shrubs will generally want. Now based on your sketch and measurements you will need to decide where you will place your sprinklers so that when they spray their spray radius will over lap each other so that there are no dry spots in your lawn. Sprinklers are divided in groups by the way they spray and how far they spray. This is also why it was important to know how much water pressure you have because different sprinklers will require more or less water to function correctly so check the water requirement for your sprinklers. Having determined where you will place your sprinklers now you need to decide where the water supply will come from. This will require that you run a main water supply line that you will then in turn shoot off smaller lateral lines with solenoid valves that will provide water to each individual zone or area of your yard. Next you will need to setup your control clock. This is the brain of the operation that will tell the valves to turn on the sprinklers in
each zone at a particular time for a predetermined amount of time. If you have decided your garden requires six zones usually you would buy a control clock that can support a little more zones than six, usually eight in this case. This is done so that in the event you make additions to your garden and need to add a new zone you can simply go ahead and attach another valve without having to buy a completely new system. From the control you will need to run two wires to each and every valve. This is how the information is transmitted to the individual areas to switch on and off. Indeed this is just a birds eye view of the process of an irrigation install but I hope that it will help you to determine if you would like to take on the challenge personally or if you will hire a pro and if so, now you are able to see the steps that they should be taking to insure that you get a well thought out Irrigation installation.
