Back from maternity leave, Darville got all the help she needed from her BTC Lady Warriors teammates as she shut down the first year Aliv Strykers 18-0 to record the first perfect game of the 2018 season. The ladies’ opener took place last night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. “It was a fresh beginning for

me,” said Darville, who missed the past two seasons but needed just 45 minutes to get back in the groove. “So it was a good introduction back to the league and to start the new season. It was a good one for me and my team.” Darville said once she can work on her stamina, she feels she can be in a better position to lead the Warriors, managed by Kelly Smith, as they rebounded from their season opening 12-5 loss to the Platinum Lady Sharks. While Darville, with the assistance of her defense, kept the Strykers off base, losing pitcher Twyla Turnquest surrendered 12 hits as the Warriors went wild,

scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and exploded for 11 more in the second to secure the abbreviated victory. Second sacker Sheryl Evans made her presence felt in her debut in the league with a perfect 2-for-2 plate appearance on a pair of triples, driving in three runs and scoring twice to pace BTC. Darville’s battery mate, catcher Melinda Bastian was also perfect at 3-for-3, scoring two runs and first sacker Jeanette Hilton was also perfect at 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and scored three times. Left fielder Nadia Thompson helped out by going 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored and

shortstop Michelle Thompson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Despite getting shut out in their second straight game in their introduction to the league, Turnquest said this is a process that her Aliv team has to endure, but they are making the best of it. “We are playing good, but the other teams are just getting some runs on us,” she said. “For a team that is just starting, we’re getting the outs and our attitude is still positive. We just have to work on our batting.” The Strykers, made up of the majority of players from Long Island who reside here in New Providence, got shut out as well in their season opener as the

Franco commits to Rebels By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net FREEPORT, Grand Bahama The busy recruitment process for Franco Miller Jr came to an end when he committed to the University of Mississippi Rebels. Miller signed his national letter of intent to join the Rebels’ incoming 2018 class at a special ceremony hosted yesterday on the campus of his alma mater, Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy. Miller, the 6’3” point guard, chose Ole Miss over his final list of schools – Oklahoma, Minnesota, Oregon and Towson. “As a freshman coming in you want to go somewhere that you can make an impact. Ole Miss, they’re in one of the toughest conferences in college basketball, the SEC, and I have a chance to come in as a freshman to start and have the ball in my hand so it impacted my decision,” he said. “I fit in well with the style of play coach Davis runs, when I was there on my visit he showed me a lot of things that I would run and it definitely fits my play style so it all factored into my decision-making.” The Rebels finished 12-20 last season and 5-13 in the SEC in the last year of former coach Andy Kennedy. Kermit Davis was introduced as the Rebels new head coach in March and has quickly recruited a top 50 class for 2018 including KJ Buffen, Blake Hinson and now Miller. “We definitely think it can be a quick turnaround, we have a lot of good pieces coming in along with the pieces they already have there so we should be pretty good next year. But everything is a process and if it doesn’t work out next year then, of course, we’ll get better and better the year after that,” Miller said. He became the second Grand Bahama native in as many months to become a member of Rebels basketball after Yolett McPheeMcCuin was introduced as the head coach of the Ole Miss women’s basketball programme in April. “She was a part of this too,” he said. “She made Ole Miss feel like home to me, I know that I got someone to look out for me and I’m not just there on my own. The coaching staff made me feel comfortable but even if she wasn’t there.” Last season, Miller travelled north to play at Crestwood

While there, he averaged 25.8 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, 5.2 assists per game and 3.3 steals per game. He broke the 40-point threshold twice throughout the year, tallying a game-high 42 points versus Thetford Academy and scoring 40 points against the Toronto Basketball Club. While north of the border, Miller earned first-team All-Canada NPA honours, first team AllCISAA accolades and Universal Hoops First Team All-Canada recognition.

His play also earned him a spot in the prestigious Allen Iverson Roundball Classic as well as the Signature All-Canadian Showcase. “When I left here my game was pretty much developed. When I went there I didn’t really change much,” Miller said. “The only thing I had to get used to was the pace of the game and the adjustment to playing against high-level talent every time you step on the court.” “We welcome Franco and his wonderful family to Ole Miss,” Davis said.

“Franco is a multi-talented guard that is a high-level scorer from a great basketball pedigree. He is really mature and will already have an SEC body when he arrives on campus as a freshman. Franco had an outstanding year at Crestwood that helped him build on the success he achieved at Tabernacle Baptist Academy. He was very fortunate to have been coached at a really high level at both places throughout his entire playing career.” Miller previously received offers from Hofstra, Montana State, Wyoming, St Bonaventure and Illinois at Chicago but his meteoric rise in recruitment intensified after he was named to the roster of the Iverson Roundball Classic. “It was something that shocked me. I was at the point where I don’t know if I want to do this anymore if high majors aren’t calling my phone but there was one day where three high major coaches came to watch us scrimmage and after that the offers just came in – Oklahoma called, Oregon called, Minnesota called, Arizona State called and it was something that just exploded in a couple of days and it was pretty exciting.” Miller said. At the local level with the Tabernacle Baptist Falcons, Miller had a season filled with accolades highlighted when he was named as the Most Valuable Player of the 34th Annual Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic. His 27 points led the Falcons to a 58-52 win over the CI Gibson Rattlers. He also led the Falcons to a Grand Bahama Secondary Schools Sports Association (GBSSSA) senior boys’ title and finished as runners-up in the second annual Bahamas National High School Basketball Championships.

The Barracuda Swim Club is a non-profit, parent-run organisation dedicated to building the youth of the nation through the sport of swimming. CARTWRIGHT AND AMERICAN PARTNER IN DOUBLES FINAL By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THEY both got knocked out in the first round in singles, but Kerrie Cartwright and her American doubles partner Kariann PierreLouis will have a chance to play for their second doubles title on the 2018 International Tennis Federation Women’s Circuit. The duo are in Trinidad & Tobago where they advanced to the final of the doubles in the $15,000 Tacarigua Women’s International Tennis Tournament. The number two ranked duo did it by winning their semi-final match yesterday 6-2, 6-0 over the No.4 ranked team of Yolanda Leacock from Trinidad & Tobago and Alexandra Riley of the United States. “We’re playing very well,” Cartwright told The Tribune. “We are into the final and so it would be amazing if we could win. That is our goal. That is what we are going for.” They will face the top ranked team of Emily Appleton of Great Britain and Portillo Ramirez of Mexico. They advanced to the final by eliminating the No.3 seeded team of Andrea Renee Villarreal of Mexico and Kristen-Andrea Weedon of Guatemala. Their scores were 4-6, 6-3, (10-8). Cartwright and PierreLouis are hoping to add to the first title they won together in Heraklion, Greece, in March. “This definitely makes up for us not advancing in singles,” Cartwright said. “We felt we could have advanced in singles, but I love playing doubles, especially with my partner Kariann, so we are looking forward to playing in the final tomorrow (today).” They both got to the second round in singles where Cartwright, the No.8 seed, got ousted by Csilla Fodor of Vietnam in a marathon three-setter 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-5. Pierre-Louis, the No.7 seed, went down 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to fellow American Gail Brodsky. “I think I’ve been playing really good overall, but my singles was really tough,” said Cartwright, who was featured in The Trinidad Express after her first round victory. “It was a long match. It was very mental. The girl didn’t miss, so I had to come to the net and attack more and not get into the rally ball that she played.” Once the tournament is done, Cartwright will be heading home on Saturday to start preparing to represent the Bahamas at the Fed Cup American Zone II Tie June 18-23 in Metepec, Mexico, where she will be reunited with Danielle Thompson, who has helped Morgan State to clinch a berth in the NCAA Tournament that starts next week.

CBC AND POWERADE KEEP TRIATHLETES FUELLED UP AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

ATHLETES from around the Bahamas took part in the 2018 Bahamas National Triathlon Championships, and the Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC) kept athletes energised with Powerade throughout the race. In addition to keeping the triathletes hydrated, CBC also provided the swim caps for the swimming portion of the competition. “CBC is proud to once again support the triathlon sporting community,” said Nikia Wells, CBC marketing manager of communications. “We were happy to be able to keep the athletes fuelled up throughout the race. “In April of this year, we were also the title sponsor of BAARK!’s Powerade Potcakeman Triathlon, and we are happy to be back to support Bahamian triathletes at the National Championships.” The National Triathlon Championships took place on Jaws Beach and included a 750m swim, 20K bike, and 5K run.

CARIFTA LOC making amends to ‘human error’ over missing medals DURING the week, the Local Organising Committee for the CARIFTA Games took the opportunity to make amendments to a “human error” that occurred during the hosting of the top regional track and field competition here over the Easter holiday weekend. Rosamunde Carey, the CEO of the games and the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ president, along with IAAF/ NACAC Representative Pauline Davis-Thompson travelled to Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago to distribute the medals that were missing during the games. Apparently, Carey had indicated that when the medals were shipped here prior to the start of the games, it wasn’t until the LOC started to sort them out that it was discovered that some of the medals were missing. While they tried to track down the missing shipment, which would not have arrived here in time, she indicated that efforts were made to secure the additional medals elsewhere, but to no avail. No doubt, it caused some embarrassment to the LOC and the reputation of the Bahamas, who had hosted the games without incident on seven previous occasions. Although there were other countries affected, Carey said Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago had the most missing and so they made the trip there to present them. It’s understood that the LOC is in discussion with countries where there is just one or two medals missing, to have them couriered by

express mail. On Saturday at 1pm in the foyer of the Thomas A Robinson Stadium, the LOC intends to present the medals to the Bahamian athletes who didn’t receive them at the games. Many people say it’s unacceptable what has happened at the games because the LOC should have had sufficient time to ensure that the medals were here. Whatever the “human error” was, the LOC made the effort to correct their mistake. It may not have been when everybody expected it, but from all accounts, the countries in question accepted the efforts of the LOC to make amendments. I’m sure this is going to be a valuable lesson learned, not only from the Bahamas but the other countries whenever they host such prestigious international events. Boxing Elections Knocked Out? Last month, Vincent Strachan elected to serve as the president of the Amateur Boxing Federation of the Bahamas, returning to a position that he held about two decades ago. However, there was validity to the process prior and during the annual general meeting that it is understood that the matter was brought before the

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. Director of Sports Timothy Munnings confirmed that the ministry was aware of allegations of “disorder” surrounding the elections that was held on April 21 at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. Munnings also disclosed that the ministry has since met with outgoing president Wellington Miller and newly elected president Strachan to express their concerns. “As a consequence, it was recommended that these gentlemen convene a meeting with representatives of their organisation to discuss the way forward,” he stated. He added that the ministry awaits the outcome of the meeting and further discussion with AIBA, their international governing body. So are Ikenna Johnson and Michelle Minus. It’s sweet music to both of their ears as they are vying to run for the top post and become the first female president. While Minus didn’t get the opportunity to run because her nomination was not accepted, Johnson lost 7-3 to Strachan during the elections. Johnson, however, took the matter to the ministry and thus a meeting was called to get some clarification as to exactly what happened.

TEAM NAMED FOR 43RD WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD THE Bahamas Chess Federation is pleased to announce the members selected to represent the Bahamas at the 43rd World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, September 23 to October 7. The players were chosen from a combination of qualifying tournament results, event participation and community involvement. FIDE master Carver Moncur, candidate master Kendrick Knowles, national master Byron Small, woman candidate master Polina Karelina and Chapell Whyms will share the enormous honour of wearing the country’s black, blue and gold. Equally significant is the fact that this is the first time a female player has been

selected to represent the Bahamas at a Chess Olympiad. The Olympiad members have already received professional training online and have attended the May 4-6 training session with grandmaster Renier Gonzales. The BCF will continue to provide training opportunities to the national team members to prepare them for what is expected to be a tough battle against 170 competing countries. Before participating in the Olympiad, members of the national team will be required to support the federation’s community efforts and to assist in the development of the country’s junior players.

SWD BOYS REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN OLDTIMERS SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION WHILE the SWD Boys remained undefeated in Division A of the New Providence Oldtimers Softball Association, the Blue Postal Sharks suffered their first loss in Division B. In games played over the weekend in the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park at the Southern Recreation Grounds, SWD knocked off the Masqueraders 14-4, the Yelrom Home Boys upset the Blue Postal Sharks 8-7 and the Q-Club Divers clobbered the DKS Crusaders 25-10. • Here’s a summary: Boys 14, Masqueraders 4 Richard Bastian had a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with two runs batted in to lead SWD as they improved their Division A front-running unblemished record to 4-0. Obviously, amateur boxing needs an infusion or a revitalisation as many believe that the sport has been stagnant in recent times with very few boxers advancing to the next level. It has to start at the top

with the administration and if the issue isn’t dealt with properly, the sport will continue to suffer because there is a lot of work that needs to be done behind the scenes. Hopefully whenever the election issue is sorted out, the new administration will be able to reunite the clubs and the islands under one umbrella as they move forward. Speedy Recovery Ford Tribune Sports want to wish Eddie Ford a speedy recovery. The sporting icon is resting at his homestead on Windsor Lane and is in need of your prayers and support of the nation.

As one of the country’s top sporting personalities, Ford has been a household name in basketball where he was the first Bahamian to score 100 points in a game, but he has been a power hitter who has hit countless home runs in baseball and softball. Since retiring from playing, Ford has been actively involved as an umpire in softball, officiating at just about every level of competition from high school to the Bahamas Softball Federation’s Nationals. Like he did during his playing days, Ford has made his presence felt as an umpire. We wish him every success in his road to recovery.

Dustin Johnson shoots 66, shares early lead at Players By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida (AP) — Dustin Johnson is using a new technique for his putting and he likes the results. Frustrated over not seeing enough putts go in over the last three months, Johnson tried the “AimPoint” method that some players use to help them read the greens. He opened with six birdies on the back nine, only once had a putt over 3 feet for par and wound up with a 6-under 66 to share the early lead at The Players Championship. Alex Noren and Webb Simpson also were at 66 among the early starters Thursday. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, playing together for the first time in nearly four years, were out in the afternoon when the light wind was a little stronger. Johnson and the early birds couldn’t ask for better scoring conditions at the TPC Sawgrass. Johnson, whose No. 1 ranking is in jeopardy this week, made the putts he had been missing in Mexico and Riviera, at Augusta National and Hilton Head.

So he had one of his coaches, Allen Terrell, teach the method to Austin Johnson, his brother and caddie. And then the world’s No. 1 player picked it up quickly, and they were on their way. “I was just not making enough putts,” Johnson said. “It’s definitely helped. Because I’m a feel putter, anyway, and so the way you’re doing it really is you’re just feeling. So it definitely works. I was pretty good the first time I switched. I had done it a little bit, like messing around with it. I’m very pleased with the way I putted today.” It involves a player holding up one or two fingers, depending on the length of the putt, to help determine. “The only thing I don’t like is holding up fingers,” Johnson said. “I make AJ do that.” The scoring was so easy that 43 of the 72 players who teed off in the morning broke par. Defending champion Si Woo Kim had the lead until two late bogeys. He had to settle for a 67, still a strong start considering that no one has ever won back to

Also at 67 was Keith Mitchell, who only got into the tournament Wednesday when Paul Casey had to withdraw with an injury. Mitchell played nine holes of practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, and made his debut with four straight birdies at the start. All that ruined his day was a double bogey at the par-3 third hole, his 12th of the day.

“I don’t want to say it was a surprise. I’ve been playing well lately,” Mitchell said. “I was surprised to be able to play, first of all, so that was more of the surprise, just to be able to tee it up. When we did, we just tried to take advantage of our opportunity.” Among those who didn’t take advantage was the feature group of the morning — Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. They were a combined 3

over, and McIlroy had the best score of the group with a 71. “It could have been better. I could have been probably a little worse, as well. It was probably a fair reflection of how I played,” McIlroy said. “It looked like it played easy out there, but our group didn’t feel like that with what we shot.” Spieth hit into the water three times in his opening seven holes, leading to a

pair of bogeys and double bogey. He also drove the 12th green to 10 feet for eagle. But he shot a 75, and he’ll have to work hard Friday to avoid missing the cut for the fourth straight year at The Players. Johnson doesn’t have a great track record on the Stadium Course. The 66 was his best round by two shots, and only the fourth time he broke 70. The timing couldn’t have been better, especially with his No. 1 ranking on the line. He opened with simple birdies at the 11th and 12th (eagle chances at both), and made a 10-footer at No. 14 and a 20-footer on the par-5 16th. The bonus was on the 18th, when his 35-foot birdie putt had plenty of speed as it swirled into the cup. He also made a 10-foot birdie at the par-5 second, and then didn’t have many reasonable chances the rest of the way. But it was free of stress, too. His only brush with bogey was a 6-foot par putt on the island-green 17th. “I don’t think I putted very well around here as a whole,” Johnson said of his record at Sawgrass. “That’s one thing I’ve struggled around here with, and today I rolled it nicely.”

Pivetta (2-2) bounced back from an awful start against the Nationals in which he lasted only one inning and allowed six runs. He scattered four hits and didn’t walk anyone. Giants starter Chris Stratton (3-3) gave up five runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Santana ripped an RBI double to right field in the first inning and scored on Maikel Franco’s single to left. Franco drove his seventh homer to deep left-center for a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Santana’s two-run single in the fifth made it 5-0. He added another two-run single during a six-run sixth against San Francisco’s bullpen. Santana raised his batting average to .191 and tied a career best with the five RBIs.

REDS 2, METS 1 10 INNINGS CINCINNATI (AP) — The New York Mets wasted a firstinning rally by batting out of turn, and Adam Duvall led off the 10th with a homer to win it for Cincinnati. Duvall connected for his first career game-ending homer, a drive off A.J. Ramos (1-2). Catcher Devin Mesoraco started for the Mets and went 0 for 4, a day after the Reds dealt him to New York for pitcher Matt Harvey. Raisel Iglesias (1-0) retired six straight batters. New York got off to a rough start in the first, when Wilmer Flores fanned for the second out and Asdrubal Cabrera doubled, following the announced batting order. The NBA’s Final Four: Cavs, Celtics, Warriors v Rockets By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer THE franchise with the most titles. The best player of this generation. The reigning champions. The probable MVP. The NBA has its Final Four. It certainly does not disappoint. Boston’s win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night brought down the curtain on the postseason’s second round — one that wasn’t exactly loaded with drama, since it was the first time since 2002 that none of the NBA’s four conference semi-final series went past five games. Cleveland swept Toronto, while Houston, Golden State and the Celtics all prevailed by 4-1 counts. Everyone gets to catch their collective breaths for a few days, with the league going dark until the weekend. Cleveland and Boston don’t tip off the Eastern Conference finals until Sunday, and the Warriors and Rockets start their West title series on Monday. And yes, the Cavaliers and Warriors are four wins away from a fourth consecutive meeting in the NBA Finals. • A few things to know going into the conference finals: LEBRON, OF COURSE Any list of anything this time of year basically has to start with LeBron James, still generally considered the best player on the planet even at 33 years old and in his 15th NBA season. Cleveland’s star is trying to reach the NBA Finals for the eighth consecutive season — something only four other players have done, and they were all Boston Celtics. Bill Russell went to 10 straight title series, Sam Jones and Tom Heinsohn went to nine, and Frank Ramsey went to eight. James is already the NBA’s all-time playoff leader in points, steals and minutes played. He’s fifth in playoff wins with 152, behind only Derek Fisher (161), Tim Duncan (157), Robert Horry (155) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (154). MVP WATCH Houston’s James Harden seems like the probable winner of the NBA’s MVP award this season, with the only other realistic candidate for top honours probably LeBron James. They won’t know who won until June 25 — after the season. Regardless, they could wind up adding to a recent trend. The league MVP has played in the NBA Finals in four of the last six seasons — James and the Miami Heat won titles in 2012 and

Nadal breaks McEnroe’s mark of straight sets won on surface MADRID (AP) — Rafael Nadal broke John McEnroe’s record of 49 straight sets won on the same surface by beating Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Madrid Open yesterday. Nadal extended his winning streak to 50 consecutive sets on clay, eclipsing the mark McEnroe established on carpet in 1984. “When my career is over, these are things that are going to be there for always. It’s difficult to be able to win 50 sets in a row,” Nadal said. “Well, it’s done. It’s over. Let’s not talk about that any more and let’s continue on what we have ahead which is what I am concerned about.” The world No. 1’s focus is trained on his next match against Dominic Thiem, a rematch of last year’s final.
