Celtics send 76ers home, face Cavs in East finals By JIMMY GOLEN AP Sports Writer BOSTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum caught a pass underneath the basket, shook off a hit and went up for the go-ahead layup with 23 seconds left and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 114-112 last night to advance to the Eastern Conference finals. Tatum scored 25 points, Jaylen Brown had 24 and Terry Rozier 17, sinking a pair of free throws after forcing Joel Embiid’s turnover in the final seconds. Al Horford added 15 points and eight rebounds for Boston, which will play Cleveland for the second straight year for a spot in the NBA finals. Game 1 is Sunday in Boston. Embiid had 27 points and 12 rebounds for the 76ers, who won 20 out of 21 games before Boston beat them three straight times to open the East semi-finals. As the BBFF officially announced the upcoming 45th edition of its nationals, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Michael Pintard indicated how the collaboration is expected to operate. “The MYSC’s sports platform has six pillars, several relate to what will be happening this weekend, and we encourage the public to come out and support. We believe that it is possible for sports to play a key role in fighting obesity and noncommunicable diseases in the Bahamas. The BBFF will play a pivotal role going forward partnering with the Ministries of Sports and Health. The 45th edition of the BBF Nationals and Novice Championships is scheduled for May 12 at the Melia Resort’s Grand Ballroom. Prejudging will begin at 9am and the entrance fee is $10 at the door. The finals will be held at 7pm with tickets available in several categories - General - $20 in advance and $25 at the Door, VIP - $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Women’s divisions include the Physique, Bikini, Wellness while men’s divisions include Physique, Bodybuilding and Masters. BBFF President Joel Stubbs said over 50 athletes are expected to participate, highlighted by an extensive list of newcomers looking to challenge defending champions and veterans. “We are most excited and most pleased to have the event return to the Melia like the audience has requested. Finally: Warriors-Rockets is the series everyone wanted By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer THE buildup for this series truly began in February, with some pointed comments from Golden State’s Draymond Green. Or in October, when Houston won at Golden State on ring night. Or in June, when the Rockets landed Chris Paul. Whenever it started, however it started, it’s clear that this is the series that the NBA-watching world wanted. Western Conference finals, Golden State versus Houston, Game 1 on Monday on the Rockets’ home floor. Series winner to the NBA Finals, series loser will undoubtedly feel like they let a championship ring slip away. “They got us. We got them,” Green said. “Got to go out there and play. We’ll see who better.” After more than 10 months of playing, posturing and some pontificating, it really is that simple. This Rockets team was assembled — the key being the trade for Paul last summer — with hopes of unseating the reigning champion Warriors from their perch atop the NBA. So far, so good. Houston set a franchise record with 65 wins in the regular season, went 2-1 against the Warriors in games that were hyped at the time though seem meaningless now, and has the likely MVP in James Harden. But how this Houston season will be remembered hinges largely on the outcome of this series. “Everybody at the beginning of the year thinks they’ve got a chance to be here,” Houston’s P.J. Tucker said. “Everybody talks about winning. Everybody talks about fighting for a championship. ... We really believed it. We’re really fighting to get there. This is not a game. Everybody takes their job serious.” He’s right on all counts, particularly on the talking. And the talking will most definitely continue over the next few days. With five full off days between the Warriors’ and Rockets’ respective second-round clinchers on Tuesday and Game 1 of their series, a lot of people will be saying a lot of somethings. “I think it’s going to be a great series,” said

New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry, whose Pelicans fell in five games to the Warriors in the West semi-finals. “I think it will be very entertaining. I think the people will have a great time watching that series, because you have great players out there. ... I’m looking forward to it.” He’s hardly alone. For as great as LeBron James has been, again, the West matchup is going to overshadow the East finals between Cleveland and Boston. That’s no disrespect to the East; that’s just reality given the seasons that the Warriors and Rockets have had, and the collision course that seemed so inevitable for either to avoid. “The whole world’s been waiting for this matchup,” Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal said in his role as an analyst Tuesday night on TNT. The three WarriorsRockets games were about as anticipated as any in the regular season: Golden State lost two of the three, and the final combined score of those matchups was Warriors 353, Rockets 352. “That was so long ago,” Warriors forward Kevin Durant said. “I think both teams are different and playing better. So you know, I try not to look at those games but we kind of know, they know what we do and they know what we do.” It’s the second time in four years that Houston and Golden State have met in the West finals; the Warriors ousted the Rockets in five games in 2015 on their way to the NBA title. Golden State was the No. 1 seed that year, Houston was No. 2. The seeds are flipped this time, after Houston finished the regular season with the league’s best record. This is the first time since 2014 — a span of 15 series — where Golden State will have to play Game 1 on the road. “Every series you play, it gets harder and harder and harder,” said Warriors guard Stephen Curry, who is seeking a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals and third ring in four years. “So following that trend for sure.” The verbal jousts between the Warriors and Rockets go back to the

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Paul is an ultraintense competitor, often the most passionate player on the court. But even for his Houston Rockets teammates, what they saw from him Tuesday night was on another level. Paul scored a playoff career-high 41 points with eight 3-pointers to finally reach the conference finals, helping the Rockets eliminate the Utah Jazz 112-102 in Game 5. “He said you get out of the way ... I’m going to put us on my back,” James Harden said. “You could see it in his eyes. He had that look in his eyes. If he has that look in his eyes ... he’s a problem.” The Rockets will meet Golden State after the Warriors closed out their series against the New Orleans Pelicans later Tuesday night. Top-seeded Houston will host the series opener Monday night. It will be Houston’s second trip to the Western Conference finals in four years and the first ever for Paul. The point guard has been panned for failing to get past the second round in his nine previous trips to the postseason. “He’s been under a lot of unfair scrutiny throughout the playoffs and tonight he showed that he wanted it,” Utah star rookie Donovan Mitchell, who is close with Paul, said. “He does it every night, but taking over the way he did was very impressive.” Paul, a nine-time AllStar in his first season with Houston after an offseason trade from the Los Angeles Clippers, also had 10 assists and seven rebounds. His previous career-best in the playoffs was 35 points, which he accomplished three times The 33-year-old scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, answering everything the Jazz tried to do in order to close out the game and series. “He was playing with a chip on his shoulder,” Luc Mbah a Moute said. Paul had been in the conference semi-finals four other times before finally getting over the hump this season. He lost to the Spurs 4-3 in 2008 while with New Orleans and was swept by San Antonio in 2012 with the Clippers.

CURRY ‘OFF THE LEASH’ IN LEADING WARRIORS PAST PELICANS By JANIE MCCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, California (AP) — Stephen Curry is back doing everything with fire, flair and without fear after impatiently spending almost a month and a half on the sidelines. Curry played his most minutes since missing nearly six weeks with a knee injury, finishing with 28 points and helping the Golden State Warriors advance to the Western Conference finals for a fourth straight year by dismantling Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans 113-104 in Game 5 on Tuesday night. “I think Coach did a great job though of just giving him a little bit here and there and tonight really just letting him go,” Kevin Durant said. “You see when you let the dog off the leash what happens.” Durant scored 24 points and Klay Thompson added 23 for the Warriors, who with a 15th straight home playoff win tied Chicago for an NBA record. The Bulls did so from April 27, 1990 to May 21, 1991. Davis had 34 points and 19 rebounds for a Pelicans team that overcame the loss of DeMarcus Cousins to a season-ending torn Achilles tendon three months ago to make this strong run. The Pelicans shaved the lead to seven points with two minutes left on a basket by Davis before Draymond Green’s turnaround fadeaway moments later. Curry has his swagger. “I feel confident in what I’m able to do out there,” Curry said. “Timing could still get a little bit better with the ball and things

like that when you start to get so excited, still when I’m out there missing six weeks is still appreciative of being out there playing. I’ll continue to get better, continue to get my timing right, continue to get back to the normal rotation, the normal minutes I’m out there playing and hopefully won’t look back.” The Warriors advance to play the top-seeded Houston Rockets in what has long been an anticipated Western Conference finals matchup — with a Finals feel, perhaps. The series starts Monday night in Houston. The teams didn’t meet during the 2017 postseason, but the Warriors won a five-game series in the first round of the 2016 playoffs. Houston eliminated Utah in its Game 5 earlier Tuesday. “We want to win another championship,” Green said, “and it don’t matter who’s in the way of that.” Curry, who returned for Game 2 after nearly six weeks out with a knee injury, knocked down an open 3-pointer midway through the third and raised his hands to get the crowd going, then made another less than two minutes later. He converted three free throws at the 6:25 mark following a hard foul by Jrue Holiday. In the second quarter, Holiday shoved Curry hard into the basket, enraging the two-time MVP who let the officials know how upset he was by the push and no call. Holiday contributed 27 points and 11 assists, but even with better shooting, New Orleans couldn’t stay with deep, score-atwill Golden State.

CURRY’S SERIES Curry went 10 for 16 in 37 minutes playing his fourth game back from a sprained left knee he hurt March 23. His minutes have increased each game he plays, up to 31 in Game 4 and 37 on Tuesday. He added eight assists and seven rebounds in Game 5. He was 32 for 67 with 15 3s in the series. “It feels like he’s back now,” coach Steve Kerr said. On a side note, he went 0 for 5 on his signature tunnel shots before the game.

The defending champions are serious about a repeat title and took one step closer to that goal. So far this postseason, with Durant and Green leading the way, the Warriors have admirably defended the slower San Antonio Spurs and now the imposing, push-the-pace Pelicans. Green had another superb allaround night on both ends with 19 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and two blocked shots. The Warriors came out of halftime with a 10-0 run over the opening 1:54, forcing two Pelicans timeouts and taking control for the rest of the game.

Thompson hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the first to put Golden State up 17-10, the second right in front of his own bench as teammates erupted in celebration. He began 6 for 9 and had 14 points by the 4:10 mark of the first. Durant became irate when Nikola Mirotic made a late, hard bump on a 3-point try with 5:23 left in the first — a play that was reviewed and Mirotic received just a common foul. COLUMN: TIGER AND PHIL IMPROVE RELATIONSHIP WITH AGE By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida (AP) — Their relationship has been softened by age. The needle is sharp as ever. Never mind that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have only five victories between them over the last five years. It’s a big deal when the two best players of their generation are in the same group at any tournament, much less The Players Championship. Mickelson, of course, wanted something even better. “I look at the cover of the newspaper and the pairing is on there and the excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking,” Mickelson said Tuesday. “Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match.” Lefty was just getting warmed up. “Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me,” he said, pausing for laughter, “but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”

Or maybe not. They have played as a twosome in the final group just twice in their careers, and Woods won both times — in 2005 at Doral to return to No. 1 in the world, and in 2001 at the Masters when he completed his sweep of the majors. So when Woods was told about Mickelson’s jab questioning whether he wanted a piece of him, Woods knew exactly where to go. “First of all, big picture,” Woods said as his smile widened. When a reporter thought Woods meant their record while playing in the same group — amazingly, the mark is 16-16-4 — Woods cut him off. “How many times have we won on tour?” he said. They have never been particularly close in the record book. Woods has a 79-43 lead in PGA Tour victories, 14-5 in the majors. Matt Kuchar once told a story about how Mickelson would be dishing out his best material in the team room at the Ryder Cup, and if he ever didn’t have a comeback, he would simply reveal how many majors he has won to shut up the room — but not without surveying his audience. “He can only say that if Tiger’s not around,” Kuchar said. “He has to look over both shoulders and make

Both will say that their relationship was overblown in the media, and there might be some truth to that. They lived on opposite ends of the country and had different lifestyles for so much of their careers. They got along fine because both are professionals, but it was never more than that.

There still were some fun moments. One year they were in the locker room at the Byron Nelson Classic when Mickelson challenged Woods to anything at their disposal. How about pool? Pingpong? “How about anything that involves running,” Woods said, and he walked away leaving Mickelson searching for a comeback. And there have been some tense moments.

Mickelson mentioned in a magazine interview going into the 2003 season that Woods used “inferior” equipment. Mickelson posted one of the great closing rounds in major championship history with a 66 to win at Muirfield in 2013, and when asked to comment on the round, Woods said only that the course was “gettable” that day. Their most famous pairing was when they were partners in the 2004 Ryder Cup, and that didn’t end all that well. They lost both matches. Woods is 42 with two children. Mickelson is 47, and the oldest of his three children started college last year. They still are competitive as ever, though both are statesmen in the game. Mickelson has never failed to give Woods credit for his impact on the game, particularly the attention he brought to golf that resulted in mammoth TV contracts and prize money that made everyone rich. Mainly because of Woods, Mickelson has never been PGA Tour player of the year, has never been No. 1 in the world and has never won the money title. “It was the most remarkable golf in the history of the game, and I think unrepeatable,” Mickelson said.

A depleted Real Madrid, without Cristiano Ronaldo and many other regular starters, lost 3-2 at Sevilla to remain in third place behind Atletico Madrid. It was an eventful night for captain Sergio Ramos, who missed a penalty, converted a penalty and scored an own-goal. Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho also scored for Barcelona, which has already won the title but it is still trying to become the first team to go through the entire season unbeaten in the league’s current format. With two matches left, Barcelona reached 90 points, 15 more than second-place Atletico. Its final games are at Levante and against Real Sociedad. “It’s a great victory, it keeps us unbeaten and that’s how we want to finish the season,” Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo said. Villarreal stayed in sixth place, still in position to qualify for next season’s Europa League. It is two points behind fifth-place Real Betis and three points in front of seventh-place Sevilla, which occupies the last spot in the qualifying zone for the second-tier European competition. Before the match, Villarreal players lined up on the field to congratulate Barcelona for its title in a guard of honour that Real Madrid had declined to give its rival in their match at Camp Nou last weekend. days on stage to now in his second term as president of the federation, most notably the inclusion of more divisions. “Women’s Wellness is a new division in the arena and is based on a woman that is more fully built. She has the dynamics or genes of a curvy woman who will never be really small but can still get her body in great shape with curves and muscle mass. It is a new look that has taken shape so we expect to see quite a bit of competitors in that field,” Stubbs said. “Things have changed significantly over the years, one being the expansion of more divisions to make the sport more inclusive to more people. There were few categories but now it has expanded. Again, I’m most happy about the fact that we have so many newcomers to the sport that will be on the stage. There will be familiar faces but it’s always good to have newcomers to challenge and it shows the growth of our sport.” Kenny Green, executive vice president of the BBFF, said the continued growth of the organisation and the national championships, now in its fourth decade, are a testament to the foundation laid by early practitioners of the sport.

“It speaks volumes to the foundation laid by our forefathers – individuals such as Hubert Wong, Richard Demeritte, Dr Norman Gay and others. We want to pay special recognition to them as pioneers and for the contribution they have made in the sport. They laid the foundation where we take the flag, carry it on and represent the country. We also want to thank the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture for the many years they have stood by and supported us. The judges continue to hone their craft to ensure that what we present is the best panel of judges to select the winners on that evening.” Following the nationals, many of the athletes will be travelling to Montreal, Canada, to compete about a week later. Then, in July, they are scheduled to travel to the CAC Championships in Mexico. The final show on the BBFF schedule will be the Faye Rolle Classic on October 27.

We have reached out to the organsations that have kids that need to start a wellness programme and have extended an invite to them,” Dean said. “We plan to get out into the society and make ourselves even more available. Not only to the schools and civic organisations, but to churches, business as well as community groups. In the aforementioned ‘Over-The-Hill’ project, we can go into communities wherever they have fairs, cookouts or shows, we can show up at that particular venue – whether they have exercise equipment like at the Sir Charles Carter park in Sea Breeze or it is just an open field. We can be creative but the most important thing is getting persons to participate and giving them the avenue and benefits of knowing what health, fitness, and dieting can have on their lives.” The BBFF will also recognise May as the Health and Fitness month by hosting its first fundraiser for the year. “This year we have invited quite a bit of charities to our pre-judging as a way of giving back to the community and also to entice those young folks to get involved, not just in bodybuilding but in health and fitness areas of life,” said Stephen Robinson, BBFF secretary and public relations officer. “Our federation is recognising May as health and fitness month and to that end, we will embark on our first ever family fun walk, May 26 at 6am. The route starts at Rawson Square and will finish at the Shirley St Shopping Plaza at Better Bodies where we will have a post-race morning boil. Of course, we will be serving a healthy breakfast to keep in line with the theme of family, fun and fitness. It is also a fundraiser to assist our national teams travelling to the CAC games.” BBFF president Joel Stubbs said the athletes within the organisation will continue their efforts of creating a healthier Bahamas. “We are more than just bodybuilding and fitness,” he said. “We have quite a bit of athletes that are trained and are capable and certified to host seminars at different businesses to speak on health and nutrition and just lend the information to create a healthier Bahamas.”

Djokovic lost to Kyle Edmund 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 yesterday in the second round of the Madrid Open, the sixth straight tournament in which he has failed to reach the quarter-finals. Nadal later cruised past Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-1, extending his record of consecutive sets won on clay to 48. The 16-time Grand Slam champion, coming off titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, has won 37 of his last 38 matches on the surface, including 20 straight. ROME (AP) — Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week’s Italian Open, saying she needs more time to be “100 per cent ready to compete.” The tournament made the announcement via Twitter. Williams returned to the tour briefly this year after a 14-month absence to give birth to her daughter. The 23-time Grand Slam champion also withdrew from this week’s Madrid Open and sitting out Rome puts her status for the French Open, which starts May 27, in doubt. Williams, a four-time Italian Open champion, has not played since her a firstround loss to Naomi Osaka in March at the Miami Open. Catherine Bellis takes Williams’ place in the Rome draw.
