Team Bahamas off to IAAF World Relays By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

eam Bahamas is off to the fourth IAAF World Relays as it takes up its new residence in Yokohama, Japan. And while only two teams will be carrying the Bahamian flag, head coach Rupert Gardiner said they will be very competitive. Due to the unavailability of some of the female athletes, the Bahamas will not defend its title won at the last World Relays held at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium in the newly implemented mixed gender 4 x 400 metre relay. Instead, the Bahamas will be featured in the men’s 4 x 400m relay with the combination of Steven Gardiner, Alonzo Russell, Ojay Ferguson, Andre Colebrook, Teray Smith and Stephen ‘Dirty’ Newbold this weekend. Additionally, the Bahamas will compete in the men’s 4 x 200m with the squad comprising of Shavez Hart, Anthony Adderley, Cliff Resias, Rico Moultrie, Newbold and Smith. “The team is still a very good one, although we don’t have our college athletes to compete in more events,” Gardiner said en route to Japan. “We will have a very good showing because the athletes going are very experienced. “We expect for Stevie (Gardiner) and Alonzo (Russell) to carry the weight of the team in the 4 x 400m. So I think our team will do well. We also have the men’s 4 x 200m and we have some pretty good competitors there too.” The heats of the men’s 4 x 400m relay will be held on day one on Saturday with the final on Sunday, while the men’s 4 x 200m will be staged on Sunday with both the heats and final. However, only the men’s 4 x 400m will be on the calendar of events for the 17th IAAF World Championships that will be held in Doha, Qatar, September 27 to October 6.

FAST TRACK: At this year’s World Relays, Team Bahamas will be featured in the men’s 4 x 400m relay with the combination of Steven Gardiner (above), Alonzo Russell, Ojay Ferguson, Andre Colebrook, Teray Smith and Stephen ‘Dirty’ Newbold. Gardiner, who will be accompanied by team manager Dawn Johnson, said the goal is for the Bahamas to make the 1,600m relay final and automatically qualify for the World Championships. “We want to make the final, qualify for the World Championships and to win a medal, which we are capable of doing with the team that we have assembled,” Gardiner said. Also making up the Bahamian delegation at the World Relays are

Ravanno Ferguson, the first vice president of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, Michael Armbrister is the team doctor and Dr Ken Bazard is the team’s physiotherapist. The Bahamas gave birth to the World Relays, having staged the first three editions at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium in 2014, 2015 and 2017. The Bahamas had also won the bid to host the World Relays in 2021. But last year, the Bahamas

Government pulled the plug on this year’s World Relays, indicating that it was not financially feasible to the millions of dollars estimated to stage the event this year. More than 700 athletes from over 40 countries are making the trek to Japan with 21 countries confirmed to participate in the mixed gender 4 x 400m relay that will crown a new champion in the absence of Team Bahamas. In 2017, the quartet of Steven Gardiner, Shaunae

Miller-Uibo, Anthonique Strachan and Michael Mathieu won the introduction of the mixed gender relay in the final event on the final night of competition. It was also the first and only final event that the Bahamas won in the first three years of the World Relays being staged in the Bahamas. The United States of America dominated by winning the Golden Baton as the most outstanding team each year.

CHANGE IN ROUTE FOR UNCLE LOU 10K RUN, 5K WALK By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net A CHANGE in the route will highlight the 12th anniversary of the Uncle Lou 10-kilometre run and 5k walk race on Saturday morning. Held in memory of the late sporting icon Leviticus ‘Uncle Lou’ Adderley, the first Bahamian principal of St Augustine’s College, the alumni association of SAC decided to change the route. Starting at 6am, competitors in the 10K will traverse from St Augustine’s College, west on Bernard Road to Village Road, north on Village Road to Shirley Street, west on Shirley Street to Church Street, north on Church Street to Bay Street, east on Bay Street to Village Road, south on Village Road to Bernard Road and east on Bernard Road back to SAC and finish line in front of the administration building. The walkers will participate in a 5K race that will leave from SAC and head west on Bernard Road to Village Road, north on Village Road to Shirley Street, back south on Village Road to Bernard Road, east on Bernard Road and back to SAC and the finish line in front of the administration building. Race coordinator Benson Russell said the new route was designed to give more prominence to St Augustine’s College in paying tribute to the legendary Adderley, who helped to shape the Big Red Machine into a household name. “We wanted to make it easier for the participants to be able to park right at the start and finish line,” said Russell of the route that previously started in Rawson Square and ended at SAC. “We had a lot of people who wanted us to start and end at SAC, so we decided to just extend the route. This is going to be a trial run for us, but we feel this will make a big difference in the event.” Russell, a graduate of the Class of 1984 when Adderley was still serving as principal, said they are

Simms to join Warriors tennis programme next fall By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net ABIGAIL Simms is set to take her tennis career to the collegiate level and signed her national letter of intent to join the Indiana Tech Warriors programme next fall. Simms recently made it official with the NAIA programme that competes in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Warriors come off a season where they reached the semi-finals of the WHAC Tournament last April. The Warriors made their first-ever appearance in the semi-finals of the conference tournament before they were eliminated. Tech concluded the season with a 7-12 record, their most wins in programme history. Simms last competed at the national level where she reached the second round of singles play at

the Goombay Splash Bowl in November. She also reached the second round of the Junkanoo Bowl in July. A two-sport star, she was also a member of several Bahamas Football Association junior national teams. Her older sister, HannahJoy Simms, is currently a member of the Brescia Bearcats women’s tennis programme in the River States Conference in the NAIA. The youngest of the Simms sisters, Gabrielle teamed with Abigail in doubles play at the aforementioned Goombay Splash Bowl. Their father Craig Simms previously told The Tribune that while their daughters are home-schooled, he and his wife Della are trying to secure athletic scholarships for them to follow in the footsteps of Hannah. “That’s why we chose this sport. We want to take

advantage of the financial opportunities,” he pointed out. “Coming from Grand Bahama, we don’t have as many resources and coaching, but we are making do with what we have, so it’s working out fine,” he said. “We want them to get a good tertiary education so we hope to take advantage of the financial support that is available through

Slugger Symonette honoured on Senior Day By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net TEVIN Symonette was one of several Lipscomb University Bisons players honoured on Senior Day. The Bisons split a double header Sunday against the North Florida Osprey at Dugan Field in Nashville, Tennessee. In game one, Symonette went 2-4, with one home run and one double, drove in two RBI and scored one run in the 8-4 loss. He went hitless in game two, but the Bisons split the afternoon with a 1-0 win. Lipscomb won two of the three-game series. Symonette, a 6’1” outfielder, went 1-3 in a 1-0 win on Friday night. The Grand Bahama native came into the game as the reigning Atlantic Sun

Player of the Week after he was a key component in the Bisons’ sweep over Stetson last week. He hit .500 with three home runs and four RBI during the series, as well as recording double-digit putouts in the outfield with some spectacular diving catches. Symonette homered in each of the three games and his solo shot in the series finale proved to be the difference in a 3-2 victory. He currently leads the Bisons with six home runs, tied for the team lead with 11 doubles and is second on the team with 11 stolen bases. As the regular season winds down, Lipscomb will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, for a conference series against Liberty this weekend and will conclude with a three-game series the

following weekend against North Alabama. Symonette started 36 of his 37 appearances this season. He is hitting .270 with a .376 OBP and a team leading .516 slugging percentage. He has also totalled 34 hits, one triple, with 26 RBI and 22 runs scored. Last year, Symonette started all 43 of his appearances. He collected 31 hits in 152 at-bats for a .204 batting average. He also recorded four doubles, three home runs, drove in 22 RBI and scored 17 runs. He was a perfect 11-11 in stolen base attempts which was the third most on the team. He also drew 14 walks leading to a .275 OBP. As a redshirt freshman, Symonette started in 49 of his 50 appearances and hit .304 with 56 hits. He also

posted a .500 slugging percentage with eight doubles, two triples, 29 runs and 37 RBI. He also had a .389 onbase percentage, stole four bases in seven attempts. In his first collegiate season, he led the team with eight home runs, finished second on the team with 17 multiple-hit games and added 10 multiple-RBI games. He tied for the team high with a 10-game hitting streak and had a career high 4-hit game against USC Upstate. His highlight of the year came in the postseason when his heroics lead his Bisons past the No.3 ranked Jacksonville University Dolphins 10-8 in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun tournament. Symonette hit two home runs, went 3-5 at the plate and finished with two runs and three RBI on the night.

Symonette finished his high school career in the United States with Christian Home and Bible School in Florida. In 2014, Perfect Game ranked Symonette as the 229th best player overall and the 49th best outfielder in the nation, the 45th best player in the state of Florida and the 9th best outfielder in the state. He was awarded the Rising Star Award as a freshman and CO-MVP award as a sophomore and joined the Orlando Baseball Academy in 2011. The versatile Symonette was also a two-year letter winner in football and led the team in rushing with 103 carries for 689 yards with six touchdowns while recording 53 tackles during his sophomore season. Some of his other accolades include a two

Giannis has 39 as Bucks beat Celtics 113-101 to take 3-1 lead in the series By JIMMY GOLEN AP Sports Writer BOSTON (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 39 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Bucks to a 113101 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series last night and move Milwaukee within one win from its first trip to the Eastern Conference finals since 2001. The Bucks have won three straight since losing the opener of the best-ofseven series at home. They can eliminate the Celtics in Game 5 at home on Wednesday night and reach the East finals for the first time since the ‘01 team of Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson fell to Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson and Dikembe Motumbo in seven games. One game after Antetokounmpo was two assists shy of a triple-double, he scored 17 points with seven rebounds in the fourth quarter to help the Bucks pull away. There is a registration fee of $20 and pre-registration will be done through Friday from 10am to 2pm at the Alumni Association’s office at the Toyota showroom on Shirley Street or commence at 5am on race day. Participants will receive a Lou Adderley t-shirt, a certificate and they will be eligible for awards presented to the first three finishers in each age group, inclusive of 19-and-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-and-over. There will also be a floating trophy presented to the overall winner. “We have major plans to change the scope of the race beginning next year,” Russell revealed. “In fact, the walk will become a fun aspect of it and the run will have the more serious aspect of it. “We are trying to have a serious aspect and a fun aspect to the event going forward. So we are encouraging the general public to come out and support the event. We haven’t had the kind of participation that we had anticipated in the past, but we hope to see an increase of it this year.” For those persons who are not familiar with the

name Leviticus Louis “Lou” Joseph Adderley, he was born in Nassau on March 11, 1933. He was among the early students to attend St Augustine’s College, which was established in 1945 and initially held classes at the Niche, adjacent to St Francis Priory, and then relocated to its present campus in Fox Hill. Adderley went to Saint John’s University in Minnesota after graduating from St Augustine’s College in the early 1950s. During his years at Saint John’s, he excelled academically and was an outstanding athlete in three sports - track and field, wrestling and tennis. Although Lou was not previously exposed to the sport of wrestling before enrolling at Saint John’s, he earned a conference championship in 1954. He also became the tennis conference champion during his last three years. Adderley graduated from Saint John’s in 1955 with a degree in economics and returned to the Bahamas, accepting a teaching job at St Augustine’s College, becoming its first lay teacher. He served St Augustine’s College for the rest of his life, first as a physical education and math teacher, then as the first lay headmaster, and finally as president of the Development Council. Adderley also resumed his membership in St Bernard’s Sporting Club, starring on its baseball and basketball teams. As a founding member of the Bahamas Volleyball

Federation, he played with the St Augustine’s College Alumni Association’s volleyball team which dominated local volleyball in the 1960s. He was also the player-coach on the first volleyball team to represent The Bahamas internationally at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1967. Adderley founded The Bahamas Association of Certified Officials in 1976 and was also a founding member of The Bahamas Association of Basketball Officials, once serving as national interpreter. In 1982, Adderley was inducted into the Bahamas Amateur Basketball Association Hall of Fame. During his 44 years at St Augustine’s College, Adderley had a direct hand in producing many of the finest Bahamian high school athletes. He also played a significant role in establishing the kind of academic and athletic excellence for which St Augustine’s has been so well known. In recognition of his contribution to national development, Adderley was recognised by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Russell said the alumni association, now headed by 2091 graduate Cherelle Cartwright, is very proud to honour and keep the memory of the late Leviticus ‘Uncle Lou’ Adderley alive through the annual fun run/walk on Saturday.

Despite flashes of his world-class talent, Coutinho has endured a troubled season and a half since Barcelona paid a club-record transfer fee to pry him away from Liverpool. But a leg injury to forward Ousmane Dembele means that it is even more likely Coutinho will be in Barcelona’s starting lineup today when the Spanish champion takes a 3-0 advantage into the second leg of its Champions League semi-final against Liverpool. Unless coach Ernesto Valverde decides to play with an extra midfielder — and leave Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez alone in attack — Coutinho will be Barcelona’s third forward.
