Are congregants ready to go back to church? BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

HE members of various church congregations are divided on whether services should resume after the Bahamas Christian Council announced a proposal they are making to the government for churches to reopen, albeit with strict social distancing policies. There have been mixed reactions from church-goers who since mid-March have not been able to worship in the traditional way. Last week, the BCC sent a letter to the government proposing the reopening of churches, laying out its plans to ensure congregants’ safety. This week the government listed churches among the entities which will resume operations in the first few phases of the economy’s opening. However, a date has not yet been set. May O’Neal, who attends church frequently, said she supports the move by the Council. “Much of the noise in the market

and people giving their negative comments about the churches opening are coming from people who do not even go to church, cannot appreciate what the church does or why it should be open,” she told Tribune Weekend. “I see the Church as an essential service, and I believe they should not have been shut down in the first place. The Church is doing the work of God and is a beacon of hope to many people every day. You know how many people rely on their intervention every day and on the soup kitchens to eat?” The council’s proposed operational guidelines for churches are: operating with a maximum occupancy of 30 percent of a church’s normal seating capacity to allow for social distancing; provide markings along the pews so that there is clear delineation of the required spacing between individuals; worship spaces with chairs will be required to arrange seating so that physical distance standards are maintained; sanitisation stations placed

at every entrance to the facility and congregants will be asked to wear masks when entering churches. “COVID-19 is not going anywhere so we have to take the proper action steps to ensure we are safe with this virus living in our communities while also not allowing it to stifle us and the way we participate in our community,” said Michelle Saunders. “I am all for social distancing at church. If churches can prove that that they are able to fully enforce these socially distancing rules, then why not let us convene as we use to. There is just something special about coming together and having church,” she said. Steven Burrows said he is a bit apprehensive about going to church during the initial reopening and will wait to see how things turn out. “I want to go back to church but I also want to be cautious about it too, so I will be waiting and seeing how all of this plays out,” he said.

Terry Knowles said she believe the council is making a wrong move here. “I will be watching church from home. What do churches need to open for at time like this when the virus is spreading in our communities? I think it best to wait and not rush any opening. Until I know it is safe, I am staying put,” she said. Nigel Ferguson agreed. “Ministers and leaders better use wisdom, and unfortunately I do not think this is the wisest thing right now. The virus spreads in large groupings and we are still in the thick of this, so a move like this is just too soon. I am looking forward to the day though that we can worship without the worries of corona,” he said. The council said it believes with the introduction of new operational standards, churches will be able to fulfill their civic mandate as the “moral standard bearers” of The Bahamas while also fulfilling their divine mandate as “heaven’s representatives” on the earth.

God knows best

THERE are those moments when one becomes anxious and overwhelmed by the pressures and realities of life. Unexpected events can disrupt the most promising plans and create havoc in one’s life. However, we should remain focused on God and our relationship with Him. If one does not know God, this becomes the time to do so. It is important to cast all of one’s anxieties on God because He cares for us. (1 Peter 5:7) The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:28 (KJV): “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” As believers we know that our Creator is a good shepherd and we are within His providence. We might be unable to discern God’s plan or will, but we trust His wisdom, love and amazing grace. Hence

we stand and continue to stand. God is faithful and He does not lie. (Numbers 23:19) It is reasonable to appreciate that some might question God’s love for us when one is experiencing unexpected adversity and challenges beyond one’s control. However God often tests our faith and dedication by allowing us to experience misfortune or tragedy. Moreover, adversity has an uncanny way of drawing one closer to God. I know of individuals who have come to know God during some of life’s most difficult moments, and have subsequently grown in their faith since then. Oh, what a blessing! Only our Creator could bring about such a result and the silver lining is real and life-changing. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) records: “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, said the Lord,

thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” God in His infinite wisdom created all life, and has control over what we encounter along life’s journey. Some of our experiences will be painful but as believers we know that God loves us. This is delineated by the painful death that Christ endured for our sins. (Romans 5:8) This single act of sacrifice should encourage us to trust God, most especially during the storms of life. God knows best and believers accept this unconditionally. This is our duty as His children. We should immerse ourselves in holy scripture when life challenges weigh us down, and pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

Overcoming the spirit of the fear BY PROPHETESS DR MATTIE NOTTAGE AS A result of the current coronavirus outbreak many people are finding themselves affected by the spirit of fear and anxiety as this deadly virus continues to impact nations around the world. During the 1930s, while facing the Great Depression, one of the worst economic crises in American history which inevitably affected the entire world, President Franklin D Roosevelt began his inaugural address by saying, “the only thing we have to fear is…fear itself” - a statement so profound and yet so true. I believe President Roosevelt knew that if the spirit of fear had gripped the people of the day, it would have caused a nationwide panic that would have crippled every American. He knew that if they were going to rebound from the Great Depression they would have to fight against the spirit of fear. Fear is a very real enemy to your faith. As simple as this word is, fear is a massive demonic nemesis that attacks the mind and can manifest in the life of the believer in so many different, subtle but yet “deadly” ways. Once the spirit of fear overtakes your mind, this demonic spirit can drive you to destructive and even selfsabotaging behaviours. The spirit of fear can cause you to walk away from God’s Plan for your life. This tormenting demon will cause you to give up on a marriage that is ordained by God because you do not have the confidence or courage to make it work. Fear will cause you to say “no” to the ideal man for your life because of your own insecurities. Fear and doubt can overtake you and cause you to never launch the perfect business idea because you are crippled by the fear of failure. The spirit of fear will drive you to selfdestruct and waste your entire life living in regret, wondering what could have been or what should have been…if you had not allowed the spirit of fear to overwhelm you. 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” In 2 Timothy 1:7, the word of God encourages us that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind. Fear is of the devil. If the spirit of fear has attacked your life, please know that this attack originated from the realm of darkness. It is not the will of the

Father that you should be bound, crippled, stifled, hindered or blocked by spirits of fear, doubt, worry or any other spirit at all. 1 John 3:8: “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” Fear is an enemy that invades your life in an effort to destroy your destiny. The blood of Jesus was shed to deliver you from every demonic attack of the enemy - even the spirit of fear. God loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus to die so that you can have a right to live an abundant and blessed life. In 1 John 3:8, Jesus said that He had come to destroy every work of the devil. URING this quarantine, I (and other like-minded individuals) have found ways to maintain a positive frame of mind. We are exercising, working from home, keeping our young ones educated and entertained, and working hard to ensure that we stay as safe as possible. But I have to admit that a few days ago I hit a wall. I was standing in my kitchen, prepping my sink and water when I realised, I’m washing dishes for the third time today, and it’s not even 3pm! I think I even posted in one of my social media groups, “I swear if I wash one more dish!” I’ve never really taken stock of how many plates I wash, or how many times I sweep, or straighten up or do anything domestic. I mean, it’s a part of life. You live, therefore, you clean. But the tedium of washing then rinsing then drying got under my skin for a bit, and it got me thinking of several things. Honestly, we may all find similar lessons: 1. I’m coming to terms with the idea that I may be a bit too anal when it comes to keeping the kitchen sink clear. I mean, washing dishes and keeping the kitchen clean is one thing, but trying to make sure that there isn’t even a glass in the sink and everything is put away all the time – is that even realistic? No one is coming over anyway, so maybe I can drink a cup of coffee early in the morning with toast and leave the cup and plate until I have lunch later on in the day. Then I can wash them all together. Save myself some detergent, bleach and some lotion. 2. I’m realising just how much I have taken for granted when it comes to connecting with friends and loved ones. I’m not one to just be “out and about”. Makes me seem boring but, hey, it’s me. However reclusively I live, I always knew that friends and loved ones were merely a drive away. If I wanted to see a sister, or hang out with friends, I could just jump in my car and make a quick road trip. But now I’m limited to Facetime, WhatsApp messaging and Zoom meetings. These are all well and good, but the

Very simply put, I refuse to get tired of the rest I used to complain about needing before. true appreciation of being in someone’s presence, experiencing the nuances of expression, the ability to touch and feel, cannot be gained through the screen of a laptop or smart phone. My takeaway from this lesson then is to be more present, try my best to lay aside my

reclusive preferences or my propensity for seclusion every once in a while. I have determined to remember that church and work are not outings and make more time to truly “be there” with those I consider important. 3. My final lesson is as simple and

straight forward as the previous two. Very simply put, I refuse to get tired of the rest I used to complain about needing before. Just the other day I found myself vexed because the only thing I did the entire day was lie down and sleep. Before going too far down that rabbit hole though, I paused and recollected all the times I shouted to high heaven how I needed to rest…relaxation…a chance to take a load off. Now that I find myself doing just that, I won’t complain about it. Now keep in mind, a state of rest doesn’t mean a state of laziness. I’m not guilty of doing nothing. I am just actively taking advantage of the opportunity to sleep, meditate, and reduce activity I longed for in busier times. A portion of Paul’s Philippians 4:11 lesson teaches, “for I have learned to be self-sufficient through Christ, satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or uneasy, regardless of my circumstances.” I’m going to try: 1. Leaving a dish in the sink (hmmmm. I’ll try but I’m not making any promises.) 2. Making plans to get together with friends more 3. Finding time to just relax and be still from now on. HEALTH AND SPIRITUALITY PART II CHRIST’S FORMULA FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH BY NICHOLAS MORLEY

JOHN 5:2-8 (KJV): “Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.” The pool of Bethesda would have been an ideal location for pharmaceutical and ‘as-seen-on-TV’ businesses that produce quick fix solutions for health-related issues. All five of her porches would have had booths that sold ‘get well’ supplements that failed to yield any long-term benefits. All those who had issues with their health would have come to the pool only to be disappointed by her depressingly long queues, or by her products that are constantly sold out. There would have been people who had been going to the “Bethesda Health Plaza” for many years, yet had not received any satisfactory results. Everywhere we turn today, there are places and people advertising quick fix products for weight loss and other various health issues which do not bring the results we so desperately need. Scores of people race to buy such products only to see their conditions worsen and the purses of the merchants growing fatter.

Thank goodness there is a formula that heaven approves and that is more affordable and 100 percent more effective than what we have grown used to. While health-enhancing products or supplements have their place, nothing should be above how God wants us to take care of our bodies. Although it was new to the lame man, Christ’s formula of healing was something he was willing to try. “Arise, take up your bed and walk.” These words spoken by Christ were said with the lame man’s healing in mind, and as we would soon see, our healing as well. Although the lame man experienced an immediate healing by the way of a miracle, Christ’s words pointed us all to an eight principle health formula, which if applied daily, would improve our physical health. Three out of the eight principles are found in the word “arise”. In order for us to arise, our bodies need an adequate amount of rest on a daily basis. Rest

is essential so that our bodies function effectively during the day. The second principal we find in the word is trust in God. Among our first duties when we rise should be to seek God through and study of his word. The third principle, and one often take for granted, is nutrition. After a muchneeded eight-hour rest, prayer and study, prepare for yourself a well-balanced breakfast in the morning. Our breakfast should always contain a good amount of complex carbohydrates, fruits and proteins. Our beverages should always be sweetened with natural sweeteners. That, in combination with the other essential nutrients we get from our breakfast, should help us start off our day strong. “Take up your bed” something many don’t like to do, but apart from this, our forth principal is temperance. The Apostle Paul admonishes us that we ought to be temperate in all things (1 Corinthians 9:25). And in order to remain temperate

in all things we must be content with all we do. In the word “walk” we find our fifth principle. Walking promotes exercise, another essential element our bodies need to maintain optimal health. Walking at least 30 minutes a day has great health benefits. The other principle that walking promotes is taking the fresh air, our sixth principle. The seventh is sunlight and eighth is water consumption. All of these principles work together for the body to remain healthy. It was out of faith and obedience to Christ’s words that the lame man was totally healed. The same applies to us. Our faith and obedience will bring immediate transformation in our health. Rest, trust in God, eat well, be temperate in all things, exercise, take the fresh air, soak up the sunlight and drink water. MEDITATION TRYING TO BE ACCOUNTABLE EACH one of us needs to be accountable as an individual and as a member of the wider society. We have a responsibility to look out for our own families and those of others. We are required to balance the important aspects of christian life: worship, private prayer, communal bible study, family, friends, theological and ethical reflection and ministry, including what may be perceived as political action. If we are to have the spiritual maturity necessary for responsible action, then our ministry (lay and ordained) will have to be based on strong devotional and spiritual foundations. We need to be a member of an accountability group of some sort, where we are challenged to grow in our faith. It is extremely difficult, if not culturally impossible, to live in a world with no christian support group or community. It is within a small fellowship that the true meaning of love, as spiritual love, can be experienced. The In times like emphasis on silence, meditation, these, we will have worship and study indicates to make wise decisive how much of ministry is public and how much is private in choices that need to preparation for the public. When we take seriously the command to love our neighbours as ourselves, a whole new dimension of relationship is opened. To speak of the Church setting the example is to place the challenge right in the way of the whole christian community, not just leaders and ministers, as we all re-examine our calling and purpose. Trust is what we need to learn to put in God, even as we learn to trust each other as a form of human bonding. Trust

extended at an early age can function as a means of promoting trustworthiness. Constancy, patience, discipline, humility, contentment and kindness reflect attitudes to self and to others, attitudes which build up relationship. The image of Christ in terms of human qualities needs to be before us at all times. We are accountable to God for those who stumble because we willingly misrepresent Christ to them. We are the keepers of our sisters and brothers, and this should motivate us to leave our sanctuaries and daily enter the noisy, crowded marketplace when this lockdown is over. Let us ponder the answer to these questions as we hold ourselves and our churches accountable in this regard: 1. Do we miss ministry in the marketplace, basketball court, “under da tree”, and wherever people gather to share the word of God? Did we socially distance from them before? 2. Have we always been on lockdown when it comes to feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, elderly and imprisoned? Will we change that now when the need is so great? 3. Have certain types of persons been locked out of our churches for years in the past? 4. How are we going to use our freedom when this is all over? 5. How do we handle the tension between self-preservation and being there for others? To have a vision of where Christ is and what He is requiring of us, we need spiritual insight and guidance, and to find the courage to act. This week, they hosted a virtual worshipper’s retreat under the theme “Come Alive”. Starting Tuesday, viewers tuned in to see a selection of worship leaders, praise teams, musicians and speakers on the church’s Facebook page and on Zoom. Sessions kicked off as early as 5am, with additional broadcasts at at 2 pm, 7 pm and 8.30pm. Speakers included Pastor Necole Watson-Adejumo of Nassau; Samuel Medas of Georgetown, Guyana; Mericha Walker, Joinae Gibson, Alessandro Major and others. The retreat is set to conclude today. “‘Come Alive’ is a retreat for all worship pastors, worship leaders, psalmists, musicians and music departments here in the Bahamas to come and be refreshed,” said Stefphen Sands, CEO of the United Worship Experiences. “Most of the time these people are in the trenches making sure that the congregation is refreshed and revived every Sunday to keep them during the week. This year it’s being done online as we practice social distancing here in Nassau. We are using the platform Zoom primarily because of the condition that the world is in now where everything is pretty much done online.” Speaking of the inspiration behind the retreat’s “Come Alive” theme, Mr Sands said church leaders, too, get burned out and have the need for a break and some rest to rejuvenate themselves. He believes as Bahamians are now in time of rest and isolation it is best to focus on coming alive again after this extended period. “We want to rest and then come alive as we shift in the months ahead and take on this ‘new normal’ in our country. I feel very proud actually to do my part in this way. I feel privileged in helping others revive their passion, but most of all, proud that I can actually get God’s will done. I would say to persons to continue to trust in the Lord, lean not on thine own understanding, but in all thy ways acknowledge Him and he’ll direct thy path. Trust Him with your life, as living a purposeful life trumps everything. Trust Him that at the end of all of this, there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Mr Sands. Over the past five years, he said, the United Worship Experiences has seen tremendous growth and the organisation has been called upon by many Bahamians to create various platforms to reach the faithful. “The United Worship Experiences is known for its worship events, conferences and gatherings.
