Miller retains title, Pratt clinches ladies’ crown

BAHAMAS Golf Federation president Lynford Miller retained his men’s title, while national high school champion Chemari Pratt clinched her first ladies' crown as the BGF concluded its National Amateur Golf Championships over the weekend.

The event, sponsored by RF Bank & Trust and featuring a number of junior and senior amateur golfers in the country, wrapped up on Sunday. The rounds were played at the Albany, Ocean Club and Royal Blue golf courses.

Miller, in repeating as champion, posted a threeday score of 215 with rounds of 71-73 and 72 to hold off the strong challenge from Alexander Dupuch, who shot 72-072-72-216. Nolan Johnson, with rounds of 73-77-74, rounded out the top three with 224.

"It feels great," said Miller of his back-to-back feat. "Some called it luck, others called it fate."

Whatever it was, Miller said he had an uphill battle

National Amateur Golf Championships played across three courses

against the rest of the field, nothing like what he encountered in claiming his first title last year.

"Alex really made it tough," Miller said. "He was tied with me after the second day and going into the last day, we ended up playing in a playoff and I actually won it."

While Miller and Dupuch went to the playoffs to determine the winner, there was a tie for fourth place at 225 with Aidan Gorospe (78-74-74) and Kerrington Rolle (76-72-78).  Eric West was sixth with 227 (79-75-73) and former champion Richard Gibson Jr ended up seventh with 228 (79-71-78). Rounding out the top 10 were Horace Miller at eighth with 232 (79-82-71), Mike McAleer at No.9 with 234 (75-78-81) and Camdyn Forbes, 10th, with 236 (85-71-80).

On the ladies’ side, it was just as competitive as Pratt clinched the title with a total of 236 (84-71-75) to dethrone defending champion Maddison Carroll with 82-74-83 for 239 for second place. Arissa Robinson was third with 252 (90-85-87).

Coming off winning her second national high school title, Pratt said she wanted to complete the double national feat and she accomplished her goal on her third time around.

"This victory means alot to me, especially as I'm graduating this year," Pratt said. "In previous years, my focus was simply on playing my best, but this year I set a clear goal to win the tournament."

"I committed my plans to God, trusted the process, and stayed disciplined throughout. When you fail to plan, plan to fail and I

approached this tournament with a strong strategy and the belief that I could come out on top. I give all the honour and glory to

God, because I couldn’t have done it without Him."

Pratt admitted that the competition was tough. "After the first two days,

I was in second place, and heading into the final round, I was five strokes behind,"

Ayton leads with double double but Rockets rout Lakers 115-96 to stave off elimination

HOUSTON (AP) —

Amen Thompson scored 23 points, Tari Eason added 20 and the Houston Rockets avoided elimination with a 115-96 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference playoff series Sunday night.

Game 5 is Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

The Rockets got their first win in the series after falling into an 0-3 hole despite missing Kevin Durant for a third game thanks to a balanced scoring attack.

Durant sat out a second straight game with a sprained left ankle after missing Game 1 with a bruised right knee. Houston’s entire starting lineup

Deandre has 19 points and 10 rebounds, ejected with about 5½ minutes left in 3rd quarter after receiving flagrant foul 2

scored at least 16 points with Alperen Sengun adding 19, Reed Sheppard 17 and Jabari Smith Jr. 16.

The Lakers were led by Deandre Ayton, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds before being ejected with about 5½ minutes left in the third quarter for a flagrant foul 2 on a hit to Sengun’s head. His output wasn’t nearly enough to allow the Lakers to close the series out on a night when LeBron James didn’t have his best game. He had 10 points on 2-of-9 shooting with nine assists and eight turnovers before sitting with about 7½ minutes to

go after scoring 19, 28 and 29 points in the first three games. But he wasn’t the only Laker who struggled. Los Angeles made just five 3-pointers after combining for 35 through the first three games. James was 0 for 3 from long range, Marcus Smart missed both of his attempts and Luke Kennard was 0 for 3. Houston looked good from the start in this one after squandering a sixpoint lead in the final 26 seconds of regulation in a devastating 112-108 overtime loss Friday night. The Rockets led by nine at

halftime and used a 12-4 run to start the third and make it 68-51 with about 8½ minutes to go in the quarter. Sheppard had two 3-pointers in that stretch and Thompson added four points. The Rockets led by 19 later in the quarter before going on a 9-3 run to end the quarter and push the lead to 90-65 entering the fourth.

Houston led by 23 with about 7½ minutes remaining when coach JJ Redick cleared the Lakers' bench.

‘Golden Girl’ Pauline Davis has her drinks trademarked

bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

GOLDEN Girl Pauline Davis can now rest comfortably knowing that she finally has her smoothie and lemonade drinks trademarked. The Intellectual Property Office in the Ministry of Legal Affairs, in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, hosted a press conference yesterday to make the official announcement.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg, Ministry of Legal Affairs’ permanent secretary Sonia Culmer and Camille Gomez-Jones of the Registrar General participated in the ceremony.

Among those in attendance were “Golden Girl” Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie and a number of students, from various

schools, who participated in the 2026 World Intellectual Property Day Expo under the theme "IP and Sports."

While World IP Day was on Sunday, GomezJones said they decided to celebrate it yesterday as they bring the community together and the best way was to do it through sports, highlighting the achievements of so many of the athletes who represented The Bahamas on the International stage.

"We honoured Pauline Davis as our champion," Gomez-Jones said. Bowleg said he was delighted to be a part of the forum that was giving some of the students the importance of the IP law that was recently passed.

"We want them to understand what they can and can't do as it pertains to local sports and professional sports," Bowleg pointed out. "We want to

encourage young persons and Bahamians in general to protect their assets by recording their properties."

He noted that Davis was singled out because of the strides she has made in producing her drinks and she went on to put in her application to have it trademarked.

As the country's premier female athlete, Bowleg said she's getting some of the recognition that she deserves. He noted that it should be an encouragement to all of the athletes who follow her.

Bowleg, along with Gomez-Jones and Culmer, made the presentation to Davis as she was presented with an achievement award and two registered trademarks of her choice.

In selecting the green smoothie and running sideways lemonades, Davis said she's pleased to get the support she needs for her

products, which also include guava ginger, mango lemonade, soursop mango and tamarind mango.

"I've been so emotional about it," said Davis, who was supported by her longtime coach and mentor Neville Wisdom. "When I found out about it, I was very emotional and thankful because I don't get too many things.

"This is way up there now. It gives me the opportunity to now sell my drinks overseas and do other things with it. I'm so thankful to the Registrar for her insight and doing what she did for me. There's no street or stadium named after me, so I'm happy to get this recognition."

Wisdom, now retired, has not only worked with Davis-Thompson, but three other Golden Girls, including Eldece Clarke, Sevatheda Fynes and Chandra Sturrup, and he said it's

Valdez ‘VJ’ Edgecombe and 76ers face elimination tonight

Celtics and Spurs can advance, Knicks and Hawks play first pivotal Game 5 of 2026

GREENBURGH, N.Y.

(AP) — After the Boston Celtics rolled in Philadelphia and the San Antonio Spurs roared back in Portland, the No. 2 seeds in the NBA playoffs are on the verge of advancing.

The New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks might still need a while to settle things in their series. Game 5 with a 2-2 tie has long been the pivotal moment of a series, and the first one of this postseason arrives tonight at Madison Square Garden. In seven-game series that were tied 2-2, the team that took Game 5 won 81.5% of the time. It's a pressure-packed moment, and coach Mike Brown believes his Knicks are prepared for it.

“This group’s a relentless group. They’re an experienced group. They perform best, it seems, when their

backs are against the wall, so I believe our guys are ready,” Brown said Monday. The other two Game 5s today can finish series. The Celtics are up 3-1 on the 76ers and the Spurs hold the same lead on the Trail Blazers, with both teams in position to wrap things up on their home floor.

However, the Celtics and Spurs both lost Game 2 of their series when they last played at home. So did the No. 3-seeded Knicks, who then went and dropped Game 3 in Atlanta before evening things with a 114-98 victory on Saturday. They know they are already facing another trip to Atlanta for Game 6 on Thursday but don't want to be having to save their season of huge expectations that night by blowing another game on their home court first.

“This is what we work all year for, what you work all summer for, for an opportunity to play in the playoffs,

VJ Edgecombe plays during Game 3 in a first-round NBA playoffs. (AP

and there’s not a lot of motivation left that’s needed really,” All-Star Jalen Brunson said. “It’s just, this is an opportunity for teams to go and put their names in history if they want it. So that’s the only motivation.”

Rebuilding Dolphins select OT Proctor and CB Johnson in first round of NFL draft

Florida (AP) — Jon-Eric

Sullivan entered his first NFL draft as the Miami Dolphins general manager with an eerie calmness.

He is in the process of revamping nearly every unit on the Dolphins roster, but he was more excited than anxious heading into the first round.

By the end of the night, the Dolphins were able to address two of their biggest positions of need.

“I told somebody beforehand, 'I feel like I should be more anxious. I'm not,'” Sullivan said.

"I trust the people in the room. I trust our work. I trust the process. I think the Dolphins got better today.”

The Dolphins selected Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor 12th overall, then traded up to pick San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson at No. 27 on Thursday night as they began their franchise reboot under Sullivan and new coach Jeff Hafley.

It was a busy night for the Dolphins, who were originally slated to pick at No. 11 before making a trade with Dallas, which moved up a spot to select Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. Miami, in return, received picks 12, 177 and 180.

The Dolphins then traded up from pick 30 to San Francisco's turn at 27. Miami also sent pick No. 90 to the 49ers in exchange

for No. 138. Sullivan has 11 more selections this weekend to begin implementing his vision, including the 43rd overall pick in the second round and three third-rounders (75, 87, 94).

Some analysts thought Miami might go with a hometown prospect in Miami Hurricanes edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. or standout Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, who were available at the Dolphins' first pick. “We were convicted on these guys. ... At the end of

the day, the buck stops with me," Sullivan said. “I take responsibility for every player we pick, whether it turns out the way you want it to or whether it goes south. It stops with me. I'm not hiding from it.

I really like what we did tonight.”

It's not surprising Sullivan began in the trenches with Proctor to bolster Miami's run-blocking for Pro Bowl running back De'Von Achane and add protection for new quarterback Malik Willis — a

safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was traded to the Jets in March.

Proctor started at left tackle as a freshman and allowed just two sacks in his three seasons at Alabama. There have been questions about his weight

— he said he was around 400 pounds at one point in college — but Sullivan said the Dolphins aren't worried about his work ethic.

“The athletic traits for a man his size are through the roof,” Sullivan said.

“I know there have been some questions about his weight. It's well-documented.

“Obviously we're very aware. We did our due diligence. We feel really good about where he is at with that. ...

“There wasn't another one in the draft like him. Period.”

signal of change for a team that had previously been built around the speed and flash of its skills players.

Miami then addressed its porous secondary with the Johnson, who was a twoyear starter at San Diego State with six interceptions — including two returned for scores — 3 1/2 tackles for loss and a sack. He can immediately compete for a starting role after defensive backs Rasul Douglas, Kader Kohou, Ashtyn Davis and Ifeatu Melifonwu all hit free agency, and standout

If he pans out, his combination of size — he's 6-foot-7, 352 pounds — and athleticism could provide Miami a needed cornerstone piece to build the offensive line with left tackle Patrick Paul and veteran center Aaron Brewer. Miami had 10 games of 120-plus rushing yards in 2025, tied for sixth-most in the NFL, behind Achane, who led the league with 5.7 yards per carry.

“It’s going to feel so good, man, knowing that you’re blocking for a guy that makes your job so easy,” Proctor said.

“He’s going to make plays. He’s a great running

back, fast as hell. I can’t wait to block for him.”

If anything, the Dolphins are getting a willing ball-carrier in Proctor, who had five runs for 16 yards in college. “Yeah, it’s really just about the trust factor," Proctor said. "I go out there and I just try to handle my business. I’ll play guard, I’ll play tackle, I’ll play centre. It doesn’t matter, wide receiver, if that means that I’m going out there to help my team win in any way, I’m going to do it. No question.” Sullivan praised Johnson's instincts and versatility, adding the 21-year-old can play multiple positions, including potentially safety.

Johnson said he feels his mentality can be an impactful addition at the pro level. "I feel like my edge," he said. “I can describe it as being nonstop relentless.”

The Dolphins have had back-to-back losing seasons, finishing 7-10 in 2025 and ensuring that their 25-year playoff-win drought — the longest such streak in the NFL — would continue.

Longtime general manager Chris Grier was fired midseason and coach Mike McDaniel was let go a few days after concluding his second straight losing season. Sullivan was hired in January and brought with him a promise to rebuild Miami’s franchise by following the Packers' model of relying on the draft to find and develop their own talent to build around.

Manchester United beats Brentford

to move clear in third place

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Third-placed Manchester United put some daylight between itself and chasing Liverpool and Aston Villa with a clinical 2-1 win at home to Brentford in the Premier League yesterday.

United moved three points above its rivals and took a huge step toward ensuring it will play Champions League football next season for the first time since 2024.

Casemiro, just weeks before he departs the club, sneaked in at the back post to head United into the lead after 11 minutes. It was his 11th headed goal since he joined United in August

2022, a record bettered only by Erling Haaland (18), Ollie Watkins (16) and Chris Wood (13).

Although Brentford was equal to the host in an entertaining first half it was United which doubled its lead on the cusp of the break.

Benjamin Sesko took a simple pass from Bruno Fernandes to finish off a swift counterattack and assure the talismanic midfielder of his 19th assist of the season, a league high, and only one away from equalling the Premier League record. “Me and Bruno Fernandes work a lot on the training pitch and it is

paying off," Sesko said. “Knowing I have a teammate with this quality is a pleasure and I have to use it.”

Both sides had chances in a quieter second half but Brentford especially was profligate in front of goal.

Mathias Jensen’s longrange strike in the 87th minute gave it some hope but United held on to ensure another disappointing result for Keith Andrews' men.

“Bitterly disappointed," Andrews told the BBC. "Overall our performance was very good. As a collective we went toe to toe with a good side and controlled large parts of the game.

League soccer

They were more clinical than us.”

Brentford remained in ninth place, tied on points with Chelsea and Fulham, but it has not won in the league since February.

However, its hopes of clinching European football for the first time remain alive and Andrews was optimistic. “There is absolute belief in everything we do,"

"We are not playing safe, I don’t want us to be that team. We set up in a brave fashion against a top team tonight and unfortunately we couldn’t quite get there’”.

Andrews said.
