Minus doesn’t feel election was duly constituted CHISHOLM By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net as the Amateur Boxing Federation of the Bahamas’ election duly constituted? One of the potential candidates, Michelle Minus, doesn’t feel so. That’s one of the reasons why she wasn’t present during the annual general meeting at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium on Saturday. Minus and Ikanna Johnson were two women who originally were vying to contest the top post

against Vincent Strachan after incumbent Wellington Miller had indicated that he had no desire to seek another term in office. However, before the date of the election, Minus said she was informed by the federation that her application for the presidency was not accepted in time to be placed on the ballot sheet. Johnson was accepted but, during the election process, she was defeated 7-3 by Strachan. Johnson, in turn, has decided to challenge the outcome, saying that the process was not fair. Minus, outlining her decision not to participate in the election,

said it seemed as if the federation intended for Strachan to be elected and not have any challenge opposition. “Nobody knew about it,” she said. “There was no public knowledge of it and so anytime you are doing a general election of that magnitude for a federation, it should be mentioned or broadcasted as to who is running for what post.” “I’ve never seen a private elections as the one they conducted. They provided us with some contact persons whom they say we need to submit our nominations to, but their numbers were not

working and so you couldn’t get in contact with anybody.” Minus said the only reason why Strachan was highly favoured to succeed Miller was because he was “one of the boys” and they wanted him to be re-elected. After serving from 1994-96 as president, Strachan was voted back into office. But both Johnson and Minus said Strachan is not fit to return to office as the president because of a number of scandals that are attached to his name. “It’s a total disgrace because it was not done fairly,” Minus said.

Waltiea back to the books By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net SHE’S one of two professional female basketball players, but Waltiea Rolle said she doesn’t mind putting her career on hold for the next three months until she completes her tertiary education. While the leagues overseas are on a break, Rolle will be returning to the University of North Carolina to complete her degree in exercise science-sports administration. She has 8-11 more hours and she will be officially done at the institution where she had a remarkable career as a member of the Tar Heels. “I will probably go back in August,” said Rolle about playing basketball after she completes her studies from May to July. “The federation isn’t opened yet. Everything will start to pick up at the end of July and the beginning of August. “I’m just waiting for it to open up in August so that I can play again in the European League. The WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) will be played before that, but at that time I will be in North Carolina taking my classes. I think it’s important for me to get my degree.” Rolle, 27, starred as a defensive prowess for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 2009-2012 via Westbury Christian School in Houston, Texas, before she ventured into the pro ranks as the first Bahamian to play in the WNBA after she was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx in 2013 and with the Seattle Storm. Here at home since she finished up the past season in Turkey, Rolle said she’s working out with coach Marvin Henfield on trying to brush up on her game so that she will be in a better position physically when she heads to North Carolina at the end of the month. “I haven’t looked at any teams yet because I don’t think that I’m ready for it,” she pointed out. “I want to get my degree first. Once I was presented with this opportunity to go back and complete my degree, I jumped on it. “You can only play basketball for so long. You never know what will happen, but if you have a degree, that’s more important than playing basketball. It will help you to take care of yourself whenever you’re done playing basketball.” While she’s not ruling out the possibility of returning to the WNBA where she broke the barrier for the Bahamas as the first player to participate, Rolle said she would welcome the opportunity

The Kane County Cougars sent Chisholm to the 7-day disabled list on April 20 due to a hamstring injury. Chisholm left the Cougars’ 13-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on April 18 after he awkwardly slid into third base. Chisholm was off to a hot start for Kane County, hitting .290 with an OBP of .405 a slugging percentage of .581, an OPS of .986 with 5 extra base hits (three doubles, and two home runs). His walk rate is at 16.2% at the time of injury. Chisholm has already surpassed his home run total from last season. A torn meniscus cut short Chisholm’s debut season in Single A baseball with the Cougars in the Midwestern League’s Western Division. He played in just 29 games - hit .248 with, three stolen bases, slugging .358, an on-base percentage of .325, an OPS of .683, 12 RBI

Isnord continues to field NCAA Division I offers, the latest of which came over the weekend from the University of Buffalo Bulls and the St Bonaventure Bonnies. In his first season with Blanche Ely Tigers in Pompano Beach, Florida, the 6’8” forward was also named All-Broward Third Team for Boys’ 9A-7A Schools by the Sun Sentinel. “I don’t have a leader as yet but Austin Peay and St Bonaventure are showing the most interest. I may reclassify to 2019 and go to prep school,” he told Box Score Report. Isnord transferred to Blanche Ely last fall to complete his high school career in an effort to boost his stock with a high profile programme. Through 30 games this season, he averaged 6.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game as the Tigers claimed the Class 8A state title. Isnord is currently on the AAU circuit competing alongside fellow Bahamian Kai Jones on “Team Brakdown” at the Under Armour Association circuit in Dallas, Texas.

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net AFTER producing another championship performance on the local high school scene and some of their members making their presence felt for Team Bahamas at the CARIFTA Games, the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine’s track team is preparing for another assault at the Penn Relays. Grown as the oldest and largest track and field competition since its inception on April 27, 1895, the University of Pennsylvania will host this year’s event April 26-28 at

the Franklyn Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Big Red Machine will be competing along with teams from St John’s College and Grand Bahama’s Bishop Michael Eldon and Tabernacle Baptist in the high school division. It’s also expected that a team from the University of the Bahamas will have some representation in the college division. However, it’s not known if the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations will be sending its men or women national teams to compete in the elite USA versus the World 4 x 400 and 4 x 100m relays respectively.

While Lyford Cay earned a 1-0 win over the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves, the Lucaya International prevailed over the Queen’s College Comets as the tournament concluded at the Roscoe Davies Developmental Centre at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday night. The week-long tournament was hosted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in conjunction with the Bahamas Football Association. Also on Saturday, the CR Walker Knights nipped the Aquinas College Aces 1-0 for the senior girls’ 3rd place consolation prize and the St Andrew’s Hurricanes blanked the Tabernacle Baptist Falcons 3-0 for the senior boys’ honour.

Five teams that could trade up in NFL Draft shake-up THE NFL Draft goes down this week, kicking off on Thursday and wrapping up on Saturday. Trade rumours are swirling heavily around the NFL, including All Pro WR Julio Jones being on the way out in Atlanta, via trade. As well as teams ready to trade up in this year’s NFL Draft to get the player they covet the most. • Here’s a look at 5 teams that could trade up, and further shake-up this year’s NFL Draft. 1. BUFFALO BILLS They’ve already traded a player to get the No. 1 pick. Now it’s time to trade those draft picks to move up into the top-five. The Bills have a ton of draft capital, so they have

the ability to do what they want if they are really willing to give up the necessary picks. It’s no secret the Bills want a QB. The Jets beat the Bills to the punch by trading for the 3rd pick, but the Bills could still create a package that may be interesting to the Giants at No. 2. If the Browns get their guy at No. 1 maybe they’d be willing to part ways with the No. 4 and send that pick to upstate New York. 2. HOUSTON TEXANS The Texans lack a first and second-round pick thanks to trades. One was good: Deshaun Watson. The other was bad: unloading Brock Osweiler and attaching a pick. They

3. ATLANTA FALCONS The Falcons are always aggressive in the draft. They’ve traded up before to make a big splash. They could trade up again. The Falcons want to return to the Super Bowl. They know where they need to improve to do so.

4. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS The Patriots make the list for most likely to trade back, and they also make the list for most likely to trade up. The Patriots have too much draft capital to not be a threat. They also have glaring holes at tackle, linebacker and quarterback. Those position players don’t hang around very long. It’s not a hot take to say the Patriots could trade up, trade down or stay put. As for competing on the women’s national basketball team, Rolle said she would like to see the Bahamas Basketball Federation take a more professional approach to the game. “The federation just wants to put you out there to play, but they don’t understand the circumstances behind it,” she said. “You could get hurt and that’s basically your career. “If you get injured or hurt, it could cost you your career because it’s more difficult for teams to take a chance on you. So all those things they have to look at.” Rolle said in addition to the pro players being compensated, she feels that the coaches need to be more dedicated to the game in

full-time capacities so they can spend more time preparing the team. “We are really not moving forward because we don’t have these things in place,” she said. “We may take it for granted, but it’s something that needs to be done, if we want to get the best teams to represent the country. “And I’m not just referring to the women’s team, but do you think (Sacramento Kings’ guard) Buddy Hield or DeAndre Ayton, who is considered to be one of the top three picks in the NBA Draft in June, will come home and play without all of these things in place?” As a professional athlete, the 6-foot, 6-inch centre said it’s important that the federation provides that type of forum at home so that they can be comfortable in representing their country. “If they want to have a winning team, they will have to put those things in place because the other countries we play against have those things in place,” she said. “We don’t have those things in place.”

There’s even more excitement expected from SAC’s 4 x 4m team that includes Moss, the CARIFTA gold medallist in the under-17 girls 400m with a best of 53.19 and Anderson, the CARIFTA gold medallist in the under-20 girls 400 with her best of 52.86. “Also on that relay will be CARIFTA finalist Marisa White, who has a best of 55.65. She led off at CARIFTA with 53-high and then there’s Jaida Knowles. Put her on the fly and there’s no telling what she can do,” Johnson said. “I expect her to run around a 53 split. “And in the girls 4 x1, we have Jaida Knowles again, Anthaya Charlton, both of whom represented the Bahamas at the CARIFTA Games, along with Doneisha Anderson and Megan Moss, along with Lakelle Kinteh and Kayneshia Carter.” Johnson said the boys’ 4 x 4 team will also compete, but mainly for the experience. They will be led by

So we expect them to do very well. “But most certainly, we are looking for the girls teams and the boys 4 x 1 to get to the finals,” he noted. “In the finals, anything could happen. So the expectations are really high.” SAC won the boys 4 x 100 and both the girls 4 x 1 and 4 x 4 relays at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ National Track and Field Championships to earn their berth at the Penn Relays. The Big Red Machine will also carry a couple of competitors for the field events with Latia Saunders and Taylor Walters leading the charge. The team will be coached by Dawn Johnson, Jason Edwards and Tito Moss.

Mavin Saunders set for open practice with Jayhawks By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net WE will have to wait just a little longer for Mavin Saunders’ debut on the field for the Kansas Jayhawks football programme. The Jayhawks recently announced that their annual Spring Game, originally scheduled for April 28, will be downgraded to an open practice due to a lack of availability of healthy offensive linemen. Saunders transferred to the Jayhawks from the Florida State Seminoles and was ranked the third best transfer tight end by College Football Focus behind Thaddeus Young (LSU) and Jesse Conners (Syracuse).

The Jayhawks will return two tight ends from last year’s roster, redshirt sophomore Jace Sternberger and sophomore John Kelly. They will also return nine starters on offence, providing a much more experienced roster for the 2018 campaign. Following a disappointing season for the entire Seminoles football programme, Saunders announced his intention to transfer in late November. “I know it is an up and coming programme and that’s why I wanted to visit,” Saunders said to JayhawkSlant.com. “When I had a chance to meet coach [David] Beaty and all of the other coaches I could tell it was a family atmosphere. They care about more things than football. The most

important thing was the family atmosphere. They showed me the blueprint on how they would use me and helping the team. The (KU) coaches said they liked my athleticism and how I can cause some mismatch problems,” Saunders said. “They liked my ability to make plays on offence and help protect the quarterback and all of the things that a tight end is supposed to do. I just want to do whatever it takes to win games.” Saunders did not record a reception last season and his Seminole stats for his career included 16 receptions for 234 yards. “What’s gone on at Florida State a lot of people needed a new fresh start,” he said. “I’m blessed to be able to graduate and have that

extra year. I’m fortunate to be able to play in an up and coming programme and help this team and grow and hopefully share my wisdom with the young guys and also learn from them. I’m looking forward to it.” The 6’6”, 258-pound tight end finished his sophomore season with 10 receptions for 182 yards - both career highs. As a redshirt freshman he totalled six receptions for 52 yards. Saunders rose to prominence in the Tallahassee community for his work off the field. And he was one of 11 players named to the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. Saunders was nominated for the honour in July based on his contributions to the surrounding

community in Tallahassee, Florida, as a volunteer mentor at Riley Elementary School. He was also named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honour Roll for two consecutive seasons. Saunders joined the Frank Rutherford Foundation Programme in Houston in 2009 as a basketball recruit and played the sport until his junior season when he made the transition to football. The love for basketball remains with the tight end and looks to become a fan of the Jayhawks vaunted basketball programme. “When I came in for the visit everybody was off campus for Christmas break,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going to all of the basketball games.”

Champions League: Underdog spirit drives Klopp, Di Francesco By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — The similarities between Juergen Klopp and Eusebio Di Francesco go far beyond their facial hair, designer glasses, and quirky humour. In terms of tactics, passion, mentality and their route taken in coaching, the managers of Liverpool and Roma appear to be cut from the same cloth, creating a fascinating subplot ahead of the meeting of their teams in the Champions League semi-finals. The respect between them was evident as they spoke yesterday on the eve of the first leg at Anfield, a match that counts as the biggest in Di Francesco’s managerial career and the most significant in Klopp’s 2 1/2 years at Anfield. “I am very happy but also concerned to play against a team coached by such a good manager,” Di Francesco said, “but I believe my philosophy is quite similar.” That would be the high press, the high energy, the expected

Harden, Rockets soar past Wolves with 50-point 3rd By DAVE CAMPBELL AP Sports Writer MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — James Harden gave Houston quite the jump-start with 22 of the team’s 50 points in the third quarter, as the Rockets cruised past the Minnesota Timberwolves 119-100 last night to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. Chris Paul scored 15 of his 25 points in the near-record third for the Rockets, who turned a 50-49 halftime edge into a 31-point advantage after the torrid 12-minute span. The only team in the history of the NBA playoffs with more points in one quarter was the Los Angeles Lakers, who scored 51 points in the fourth on March 31, 1962, in a loss to the Detroit Pistons. Harden finished with 36 points on 12-for26 shooting, Clint Capela added 14 points and 17 rebounds, Eric Gordon finally got going with 18 points off the bench and the Rockets easily recovered from their rough start. Karl-Anthony Towns had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who were dominated on both ends of the floor during the decisive third and missed 14 of 21 shots over several panicked possessions. The Timberwolves rebounded from their two defeats on the road by matching the Rockets with 15 makes from 3-point range in Game 3, a startling development considering the Rockets led the league in that category during the regular season and the Timberwolves were last. They wisely took another tack for Game 4, attacking the basket in the first half with relentless abandon and plenty of success while Towns watched most of the first quarter from the bench after picking up his second foul less than three minutes into the game. Derrick Rose, who finished with 17 points and six rebounds, was the catalyst off the bench with multiple muscle-hisway-in layups on both fast breaks and in the half court. Starting point guard Jeff Teague, meanwhile, had only two points on 1-for-7 shooting while fighting through an injury to his right pinky finger. The Wolves were in front by as much a 36-29, but with as poorly as the Rockets were shooting they needed a larger lead than that. They went 21 for 44 from the field (47.7 per cent) in the first half, but with all the layups and putbacks in the mix they easily could have made more.

Harden didn’t make a basket until 5:57 remained in the second quarter, when his 10-foot floater fell in to cut Minnesota’s lead to 39-37. He swished one of his signature step-back 3-pointers on the next possession, and Houston was right back in front to sow the seeds for the staggering third quarter. Just like in Game 2, the Rockets raced out of the gate after the half. Harden scored 17 of their first 20 points. Wolves star Jimmy Butler, on the other hand, started forcing off-balance shots. Teague and Paul, the two former Wake Forest point guards, engaged in some intense trash talk. Paul baited Teague into a pushing foul for a pair of add-to-the-pile free throws.

Gordon tacked on another 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 100-69 lead. FULL CIRCLE The last time the Timberwolves were in the first round of the playoffs in 2004, their opponent was Denver and Nene was a 21-year-old starter for the Nuggets. This is his 16th season in the NBA, the second with the Rockets. TIP-INS Rockets: Ariza finished with 15 points. Timberwolves: Backup point guard Tyus Jones was available on an emergency-only basis because of a sore right knee. Rose played 33 minutes. ... Butler (19 points) and Andrew Wiggins (14 points) combined to shoot 12 for 31 from the floor. UP NEXT The series shifts back south to Houston for Game 5 on Wednesday night.
