New Hope Missionary Baptist Church celebrates 50th anniversary

NEW HOPE Missionary Baptist will celebrated its 50th anniversary making that years of Christian dedication and service to the community.

The anniversary festivities kick of this Sunday where a total of 50 persons - including pioneers, the founding members, and a number of persons who have remained faithful and supportive even during turbulent times will be recognised during a special service of praise & thanksgiving under the theme “Legacy of Grace - Honouring God for His Faithfulness”. This Jubilee celebration continues throughout the year 2026 - 2027 with many events, culminating with a 50th Jubilee Banquet in October 2026.

New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, was frst conceived in the heart and mind of God and brought to life through the faithful ministry of our late founding pastor, Rev. Dr. Mitchell R. Cooper, and his dear wife and survivor, Minister Catherine Cooper, along

with the dedicated service, gifts, and prayers of members and supporters. From its inception, the name New Hope has refected a divine call to be a ministry of deliverance, reconciliation, service and exemplary Christian living.

On April 24, 1976, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was ofcially organized with a small group of twenty-two believers under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Dr. Cooper at his home on Hawthorne Road in Oakes Field. Shortly thereafter, a small wooden building was rented on Robinson Road, where worship services were held for nine months.

A signifcant milestone was reached on Palm Sunday, April 1977. Early that morning, a baptism was held and later that day, the pastor and congregation gathered at Heastie’s Lumber Yard on Robinson Road and marched in celebration to the church’s new location in Joan’s Heights West. The cornerstone of

that frst sanctuary bore the ftting inscription:

“The people had a mind to work.” The church fourished. The Sunday School grew, new ministries were established, and the church’s outreach extended throughout New Providence. Our frst bus driver, Bro. Orthnell Poitier, who is still with us today, faithfully collected individuals for worship.

He prepared as early as Friday evenings, ensuring the exact locations for Sunday morning pickups. As the membership increased, the need arose for a larger sanctuary.

In November 1982, construction began on the second phase of the church’s development. By God’s grace, after three and a half years of faithful labor, the new and present sanctuary was dedicated on Sunday, April 20, 1986. Its cornerstone was inscribed with the words: “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”

The ministry’s reach expanded further with the launch of the Mission

the homes and hearts of the nation.

In September 1997, after twenty-one years of devoted service to God and this congregation, Rev. Dr. Cooper was called from labor to

eternal rest. His passing marked the close of a remarkable chapter in the life of New Hope.

The ministry began a new chapter. Currently under the leadership of our Senior Pastor, Rev. Elmond King, it continues its growth and witness.

Over the years, New Hope has been blessed with opportunities to impact countless lives through its Sunday School, Preschool Ministry (New Hope Academy), Mission of Hope Radio Broadcast, Bus Ministry, Youth Ministry, and many other areas of service. We are also grateful that several former members have gone on to lead congregations of their own.

To many, New Hope is known as “the generous church”—always willing to help, encourage, and serve. To others, it is simply “home.”

As the congregation celebrates its fftieth anniversary, it does in a spirit of gratitude for the faithfulness of God, who they say has carried the ministry through turbulent times provided and protected us them.

With renewed faith and hope, the church body remains confdent that God will continue to do a good work in the congregation.

beyond a traditional church celebration and serve a broader purpose within the community.

“This celebration is about honoring 60 years of faith and service by investing in the health and future of our community,” she said. “We wanted to create something that goes beyond a moment of

recognition and instead provides something meaningful and practical. It is about encouraging people to move, learn and take a more active role in their own wellbeing.”

A blood drive will take place between 9am and 3pm as part of the day’s programme, giving members of the public an opportunity to contribute directly to healthcare eforts through voluntary

Bowe Adderley said bringing multiple services and organisations into one space allows for greater access and engagement, particularly for those who may not regularly seek out health resources.

“At a time when communities are placing greater emphasis on wellness and preventative care, we felt it was important to create an environment that is open and accessible

“By gathering healthcare professionals, civic groups and residents together, we are encouraging shared responsibility and making it easier for people to connect with the support they need.”

Several organisations are expected to participate in the expo, including Doctors Hospital, National Health Insurance, the Physiotherapy Association, the Diabetic Association, Bahama Health, Bahama Hearing, Quality Care Pharmacy and Essence Day Spa. Representatives

from CV Bethel Senior High School and backyard farming initiatives are also expected to be involved, along with support from civic groups such as Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs and Toastmasters. In an efort to ensure the event appeals to families, a kiddie corner is scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m., ofering activities for children while adults engage with the various services and sessions available throughout the day.Organisers say the event will be supported by volunteers and coordinated logistics to ensure

a smooth experience for attendees. Hydration stations, safety oversight and structured programming are all expected to contribute to the overall fow of the day.

As Holy Cross Anglican Church commemorates six decades of ministry and outreach, the wellness initiative refects its continued commitment to community engagement, with a focus on practical ways to support health and wellbeing across all age groups.
