FINDING THE HIDDEN LEAK
By Mike Lightbourn IF you’ve owned a home for a long period of time, chances are you have been socked with a crazy water bill at some point. It can hit you out of the blue, often at a bad time. Unless you left the water running or the meter is faulty, you probably have a leak. Some plumbing leaks are obvious. However, your plumber may not be able to find the leak, giving you unwelcome visions of more high water bills. Here are the tell-tale signs of a water leak: MOLDY SMELL Wood, sheetrock and drywall give off a musty odor when they get wet. If you have this type of odor in your home and it doesn’t go away, see if you can follow the smell to detect the leak. CEILING STAINS Spots and stains on a ceiling are also signs of a water leak. The ceiling may look mottled or have stains. It may sag. ROACHES Roaches love water and moist conditions. So do silverfish and millipedes. They are even attracted to wet wood from cabinets. WOBBLY TILES Water can get beneath bathroom tiles and make them wobbly. Look for dampness or stains behind the faucet plate. Check the caulking and grout for gaps.
RUST AND SEDIMENT Water with sediment may point to a leak. Rust in the water may indicate the pipes are old and could be a forerunner to a leak. (Of course, the rust may be coming from the Water and Sewerage Corporation’s pipes, depending on where you live). THE GRASS IS GREENER Inspect your yard. Do you see a patch of grass that’s greener than the surrounding area? This may mean an underground pipe has burst. CONFIRMING AN INVISIBLE LEAK If your water bill has increased noticeably and there are no obvious signs of a leak, do the following: Shut off all water running in your home and outdoors. Is everything off? OK, now, go outside and check your water meter and write down the number. Keep the water turned off for at least three hours and then check the water meter again.
