Memorial Service For for their needs and to ensure that he received a thorough education Elizabeth Cosili Lacdoy-Laroda, 55 toandprovide all that he needed for life. Most importantly, she ensured that Symillian was of Farrington Road, Nassau, Bahamas and formerly of Mountains, Province, Philippines will be held on Saturday, March 27th, 2021, 10:00 am at East Street Gospel Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Sterling R. Moss assisted by Sister Anna Moss and Sister Jennifer Miller. Elizabeth Cosili Lacdoy’s life began in the Philippines where her family resided in the Mountains Province. Her parents were Pablo and Diana Cosili-Lacdoy. Her parents taught her, as did her community the virtues of hard work, determination, and humility. From an early age Elizabeth was an industrious young girl. At the tender age of 13, she became employed in care taking and excelled in employment surrounding domestic affairs. So impressive was she in this arena, that her employers kept her as they moved from the Philippines to Singapore. Although raised affiliated with Catholicism in the Philippines, Elizabeth attended a Baptist church in Singapore. It was in Singapore where she heard the gospel, believed, was born again and baptized. Later her employers moved from Singapore to New York and then eventually settled in the Bahamas. This was Elizabeth’s new home until her call came to leave this life and enter glory. In the Bahamas, Elizabeth, yearned for Christian Fellowship. She used a phone book and made a call to East Street Gospel Chapel. The Church’s Secretary, ironically also named Elizabeth, spoke to her. Elizabeth promised to visit and the two Elizabeths became acquaintances. Elizabeth visited East Street Gospel Chapel and never left. She was known for her generosity, and support of numerous church events. Elizabeth found a new home, but she also found love. On a mail boat trip to Andros, where she met Leonard Laroda. They were married at East Street Gospel Chapel by Senior Pastor and Evangelist Tom Roberts. From this union one son was born, whom they called Symillian. Elizabeth was known to possess a gentle and quiet disposition. She was friendly and was never known to involve herself in arguments and matters surrounding strife. Symillian became her pride and joy. She celebrated his life, and worked
affiliated with her church where he was involved in Sunday School and Youth Ministry, and where he too would one day hear the gospel and believe.
As fate would have it, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Leukemia around 2010. She fought this disease valiantly, until she was unable to continue employment in November of 2019. During this time Elizabeth’s close friends and Church family rallied around her to provide assistance, support, advice and prayers and to stand with her in her time of need. She was particularly supported by her close friends, Tess Bridgewater, Annie Greene, and Mary Jane, who spent time with her. In fact, it was Tess Bridgewater and Mary Jane who was with her, when she fell ill and was taken into hospital until her last visit. They were friends until the end. Her church family rallied around Symillian and Elizabeth. Sister Janet Hepburn was exemplary in her attention of her along with the care and insight of Sister Patrice Gilbert and Dr. Capuil. They visited her regularly in hospital encouraged and prayed with her as the effects of her disease became more visible. The Filipino community and Elizabeth’s family in the Philippines, were one with her in her distress. They cared for, encouraged, supported and loved her through video calls. They also ensured that there were fundraisers held; addressing pressing needs by assisting in multiple ways. Sister Anna Moss, Sister Paula Sands and Genesis Academy family at times provided home cooked meals, groceries, and other Saints at her church, generously stood with Sister Elizabeth Laroda and provided support. She was loved by all. On March, 17th 2021, Elizabeth was beckoned from the scenes of earth to behold the more glorious scenes of heaven with Christ who saved her. Those close to her know of the bond she had with her son Symillian and her love for him. It is felt that she fought so well and so long and so hard, because she was fighting for her son. She fulfilled her duties as a mother until the end. Symillian, the Laroda and the Lacdoy families are grateful to those who assisted during her time of illness; including: Filipino Community (Filipino Association of the Bahamas), NPCC Church Family, ESGC Church family, Mrs Knowles, Pastor Tinkle Hanna, Mrs. Melody Hanna (Genesis Academy), Teachers and staff of the Genesis Academy, Dr. Cautauli , Monica, Beatrice, Bea, Dr. Dindo and Family, Dr. Hall, Dr. McKenzie, Dr. Grace de Castro, Nurse Lerry, Sis. Maria Ajero and many others too numerous to mention. A TIME TO BE BORN On the 1st day of February 1958 on the island of New Providence, Prince Albert Nixon and Willamae Miller, were both overwhelmed with joy for the birth of their newborn son. This beautiful baby boy would be his mother and father’s pride, as he was given the name: Christopher Albert Nixon. As he spread his wings embracing life and its wonders, he formed precious memories with family and friends near and far, and would have affectionately been called many aliases: “Chrissy Boy”, “Nixon” A TIME TO LEARN AND WORK Christopher was always passionate to learn and determined to succeed. He was educated at Claridge Primary School and R.M. Bailey Senior High School. One of his ultimate loves was race horsing, which led him to discover all about this sport and he became a well known jockey in The Bahamas. In later years he developed exceptional skills in the fields’ mechanics of auto body repair, cooking, building and construction. Christopher was truly a ‘jack of all trades’ with a strong business mind. He was employed as a chef at ‘The Fish Net & Café Marti’, operated his own mechanic shops and, ultimately operated Christopher & Christopher Construction Company for the past 30 years. A TIME TO LOVE It is said that heartbeats are not just meant to be heard but felt and shared. Christopher felt deep within his heart for his Queen Alexandra the minute their eyes met in 2005. He knew right away he wanted to share his heart and soul with his newly found soul mate. This union would bring forth a shining light, his beautiful little princess, Krismerlyn Nixon. Prior to this union he would have fathered his other pride and joy, Christopher Nixon II. Christopher’s time spent together with family, creating precious memories, was always built on the foundation of his love. A TIME TO DIE In the early morning hours on Friday March 5, 2021, a golden heart stopped beating. God saw Christopher was getting tired, so he put His arms around him and whispered “Come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. Christopher’s hard working hands now at rest. God broke our hearts to

EW on the local gospel music scene, Antonio Thompson recently introduced himself and his work to the Bahamian public via a special live recording at Trinity City of Praise. With this event, “Live in the Upper Room: Part 1”, he sought to show his passion for ministering the gospel of Jesus Christ through song. Born and raised in Nassau, Antonio loves all the performing arts: film, television, theatre and music. “I love the Lord with all of my heart and I deeply love and respect my family. I’m also a worshipper and I’m a Christian believer”, he told Tribune Religion. Antonio said he was inspired to host his live recording by a vision he had last summer. “I had a vision while sleeping on Independence Day 2020 at home. I woke up from my sleep and asked the Lord as to what to do. He told me to create the experience and invite worshippers to join. I was unsure, as sometimes we all are. The following Sunday I listened to Bishop Neil C Ellis, and at the end of his sermon his words were ‘do what is in your heart to do!’
I got it.” The inspiration for his songs, he said, comes from the Holy Spirit and his brother, Marvin S Sands.

It strikes at the heart of what God wants from the lives of worshippers throughout the world. He wants us to sing a new song unto him (Psalms 96:1), to minister to him, and then to allow others to hear of that testimony. ‘Part 1’ is the beginning of a movement where songs are birthed from the prayers we have prayed during a season of loss and dryness. Our expectation is that God will do amazing things and answer prayers of his people as we sing unto Him in Thanksgiving,” said Antonio. Last Friday, the organisation’s community meeting was held at the Deep Creek Primary School, where the group’s chaplain, Zilchus Thompson, opened the event with a prayer, and President of the NNWC Marvin Gibson thanked those in attendance for their support of recent initiatives, including a car wash and a souse-out. “Focus was given to planning events for the month of April 2021, including a community prayer event, an Easter Monday activity for the children, a cleanup campaign, as well as some discussion about the Deep Creek Development Association. Also, Assistant Chaplain Oswald Young spoke about organising a men’s rally and setting up an office for the NNWC,” said Mr Gibson. Last Sunday, he accompanied Community Police Officer Renardo Brown of the NNWC and NNWC Secretary Deanne Thompson to visit Jacqueline Thompson, a senior citizen of the Deep Creek community, to present her with a new wheelchair. “Ms Thompson and her children expressed sincere gratitude for this kind gesture. She also commended the Deep Creek NNWC for the work that they are doing in the community,” said Mr Gibson. He believes the NNWC gives strength to the community and provides a platform for anyone who is invested in helping others. He said as COVID-19 has changed the way people now look at life, and how they interact with each other. The Deep Creek community united in prayer is a demonstration of reliance on faith over languishing in fear, he said. “The Deep Creek NNWC is driven by our faith in God and the power of prayer. CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL CELEBRATES WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY WITH MISMATCHED SOCKS THIS year, as part of their initiative to increase awareness of Down syndrome in the community, the congregants of Christ Church Cathedral came together to celebrate the uniqueness of individuals born with the genetic disorder. Members were encouraged to wear mismatched socks and to make a donation of $5 to the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association. Members were reminded not to take for granted
the simple things in life, because for some people those simple things are extremely difficult to accomplish or even out of reach altogether. The idea of wearing mismatched socks first came about in 2013. It was created because chromosomes are shaped “like socks” and people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome. Mismatched socks also display the popular way of thinking
that goes: “What makes us unique is what makes us different.” Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21 because the condition is also known as trisomy 21. Chromosomes are small “packages” of genes in the body. They determine how a baby’s body forms during pregnancy and how the baby’s body functions as it grows in the womb and after birth. Typically, a baby is born with 46
chromosomes. Babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes, chromosome 21. A medical term for having an extra copy of
a chromosome is “trisomy”. This extra copy changes how the baby’s body and brain develop, which can cause both mental and physical challenges
for the baby. Even though people with Down syndrome might act and look similar, each person has different abilities. Most have mild (IQ: 50–69) or moderate (IQ: 35–50) intellectual disability with some cases having severe (IQ: 20–35) difficulties. Some common physical features of Down syndrome include: • A flattened face, especially the bridge of the nose • Almond-shaped eyes that slant up • A short neck • Small ears • A tongue that tends to stick out of the mouth • Tiny white spots on the iris of the eye • Small hands and feet • A single line across the palm of the hand (palmar crease) • Small pinky fingers that sometimes curve toward the thumb • Poor muscle tone or loose joints • Shorter in height as children and adults
Community of the Gospel names Bahamian as first international monastic THIS month, Kenneth M J Mortimer, Sr became the first person outside of the United States to be elected to the Community of the Gospel Monastic Order. Founded in 2007, this group is a Christian Community formed in accordance with the Canons of the Episcopal Church of the United States (ECUSA) and is sanctioned by the worldwide Anglican Communion but is not limited to just members of the Episcopal Church. It is a non-resident monastic community which is open to any person who is interested in seeking a deeper relationship with Christ. Its members express their baptismal vows through a life of concentrated prayer, reflective study and personal service. Mr Mortimer said this is a culmination of a desire that he has had from his youth, but along the way “life happened and sometimes we might have personal desires, but the Lord has other plans for us”. An Anglican from birth, his spiritual formation is rooted in the parish church of Holy Cross in Highbury Park, where he presently serves as a lay minister and a leader with the Scout Troop at that church. With respect to his involvement in the monastic order, Mr Mortimer said: “My role is to be a living stone, to stand firm with all the other living stones, always recognising that the cornerstone, the cap stone and

As living stones,we must seek the good of others as we seek the good of ourselves.” He began his studies with the Community of the Gospel back in January 2019, which entailed both distance learning and on-campus instruction that took place at annual convocations and regional retreats. Members must have attained the age of 21 in order to join, but there is no upper age limit. Although still a monastic order, the community is not based exclusively on any one major tradition, as with the Franciscan or Benedictine Orders, but there are parallels. For example, much of the prayer life is based on the
Benedictine tradition; the aspects of study are somewhat Dominican, and the life of service is similar to the Franciscan or Jesuit Orders. On Saturday, March 20, at 10am, Mr Mortimer participated in the Rite of Profession of the Community of the Gospel, which was held within the context of the Family Eucharist at his home parish of Holy Cross. As a member of this monastic order, he has chosen the name of Brother Michael-Jude. He has expressed his joy at achieving this goal as it allows him to have a deeper involvement in the life of his parish with respect to liturgical, evangelistic and educational activities. Brother Daniel-Chad Hoffman, CG, Guardian of the Community of the Gospel noted that “Brother Michael-Jude has already enriched our community with his single-minded focus on monastic living. His presence reminds us of the truth contained in the lyrics of the beloved John Oxenham hymn: ‘In Christ there is no East or West, in him no South or North, but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth’.” Family and friends, especially those of the Cursillo Ministry within the Anglican Church and the Diocesan Council of the Anglican Church Men, were on hand to witness the Rite of Profession last Saturday morning.

‘A promiscuous she-pope with a dilated cervix’: the legend of Pope Joan, who gave birth on a horse By MILES PATTENDEN Australian Catholic University (THE CONVERSATION) – IF Pope Joan — the infamous female pope of the ninth century – didn’t exist, you can see why someone would have had to invent her. For the Catholic Church, she became a story of why women should not be allowed to hold power; for the Protestants, she was a helpful argument against falsehoods embedded in the papacy. A woman who inveigled her way onto St Peter’s throne, some said the “Popess” was English; others German. A popular medieval version of her tale has her gender “discovered” during a papal procession because she gives birth while trying to mount her horse. Was Joan real? Probably not. Does it matter? Probably not that much either. Her story tells us something important about wider attitudes to sex and gender in pre-modern Christian Europe. But the story’s on-going popularity also reveals something of our own fascination with arcane and seemingly rigid genderboundaries in the Catholic Church. A figure of satire Likely, Joan was born of a very Roman love of satire. Romans have excoriated political leaders for centuries by posting humorous verses on the so-called “talking statue” of Pasquino outside Piazza Navona. Gendered tropes and sexual obscenities commonly punctuated these literary efforts. The humanist Niccolò Franco (1515-70) penned one which began “the pope, and all his prelates, are buggers.” Pope Pius V had him executed. A 17th-century pamphlet memorably imagines the

Joan is just the grand old dame of such creations. Joan’s story first appeared in the chronicle of a Dominican friar in 1255. However, it is probably a century older from a period of upheaval when popes sought to consolidate their rule over Rome. Many Romans resisted the pope’s encroaching authority and used Joan as a weapon to mock their priestly overlord. They drew on past scandals, notably the 10th century’s “pornocracy” or “rule of the harlots” when the
papacy came under the control of Theodora, wife of the Roman consul Theophylactus, and her daughter Marozia. Theodora helped install Sergius III as pope in 904 with Marozia as his concubine. Marozia’s son later became Pope John XI (93135) and her grandson Pope John XII (955-64). Joan’s story can be read as an allegory for those events when a woman really had been in control. Let’s talk about sex Joan also speaks to Christianity’s wider problem with sex. Early Christians fused Greek philosophy with Jewish lore – but they
took their sexual ethics from Aristotle, who was not altogether keen on the pleasurable act. Joan, the promiscuous she-pope whose cervix dilated in the midst of performing sacred duties, was the very antithesis of the proper Christian virgin. Sixteenth-century Reformation Protestants seized on this contrast
with Christian teachings to cite her as evidence of the papacy’s essentially corrupt nature: verily, she linked it to the biblical Whore of Babylon. Yet Catholics saw a different parallel for Joan: Queen Elizabeth I of England, a woman who never married nor produced an heir. Her Act of Supremacy (1559) had set her up as “Popess” of her own Anglican Church. Joan and Elizabeth were painted as heretics, going against Church teachings. And, asked the Catholics, could Elizabeth really be any purer or more virginal than the Joan of legend? What makes a man? Both Protestants and Catholics also asked: could a woman really have fooled men in the way Joan is said to have done? Protestants — adamant she really existed — reached into the historical record for examples of female cross-dressing such as Joan’s notorious namesake Joan of Arc. Some speculated beardless Italians were so effeminate that Joan’s deception of them was quite believable. Others pointed to the wealth of accounts of Joan’s life in chronicles from before the Reformation which they thought impossible to refute. They even found support in descriptions by Renaissance humanists of the sedia stercoraria, a seat with a hole in its centre used in papal coronations. Was its purpose to check the new pope’s genitalia, they asked? And why would this need to be
proven, unless that had ever been questioned? Joan personified the Catholic Church’s essentially patriarchal nature. Her tradition became the exception to prove the rule. Enduring tales By the 18th century a consensus gradually emerged among both Catholics and Protestants that Joan’s life was purely fictional. However, today Joan continues to inspire as both sensation and symbol. Some consider Joan a feminist pioneer, others see her as an early transgender figure. Two Pope Joan films, in 1972 and 2009, present her as a feminist character. And Rihanna showed up to the 2018 Met Gala in a genderbending pope outfit that strongly implied this, too. But a transgender Joan has now had her own play and inspired the crowning cliché in Robert Harris’ thriller Conclave (2016). As the Catholic Church finally confronts the yawning gap between the views of the Catholic faithful and its own teachings on sex and gender, Joan could be a pope for the 21st century. Earlier this month a French nun became the first woman to hold a voting position at the Vatican. But an actual female pope presiding over mass in St Peter’s?
