What scripture brings you comfort in troubling times? By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
W
ITH so much happening in the world – the chaotic conflict in Europe, increasing gas prices, news of a possible global famine, the coronavirus pandemic, not to mention troubles here at home in the Bahamas, including the escalation of murders happening on a daily basis – we are undoubtedly living in troubling times. There are so many distressing matters occupying the headlines that it can be hard for people wrap their heads around them. In fact, many individuals have been thrust into a state of fear, panic and anxiety over all that is seemingly going wrong in the world. Christians searching for a little sliver of hope and peace amidst uncertainty said they have found comfort in cracking open their Bibles and mediating on their favourite scripture. They said there are powerful promises made by God, especially for troubling times. John 16:33 - “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take
heart! I have overcome the world.” Lisa Munroe said this scripture brings her comfort and has become part of her daily mediation and confessions. “Before Jesus left this world, He told us what would happen. We are seeing what He has said come to pass. He told us that we can see perilous times, very high-stress times. So what we are seeing in this world today should not take us by surprise or catch off guard. Jesus not only told use what we can expect to see take place, but He also gave us confidence and an answer to our fears and anxiety. He has defeated this world already so we can actually be in peace,” she told Tribune Religion. John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Beverly Colebrooke has come to know this scripture by heart. She said it has brought her great peace and comfort in the midst of the chaos she has faced in her personal life and what is happening in the country and world. “Jesus’ peace is an inward peace you
experience even when your circumstances are stormy. His peace does not mean an absence of trouble but that you can have full confidence and a settled spirit in the midst of the storm. Then Jesus also tells us that we have the power to not allow our hearts to be troubled. We do this by staying focus on Him, praying, pleading the blood and meditating on his word concerning our protection,” she said. Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every
situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Donald Strachan, who has recently converted to the Christian faith, said he this scripture gives specific instructions in dealing with challenging circumstances. “It instructs us to instead of being fearful and worrisome to pray about everything and all
things. Prayer is a direct line of communication with God. It is our opportunity to invite the divine intervention of God in whatever situation that we are troubled. I find it so amazing that God is with us every step of the way. He is guiding us and showing us how to have victory over life’s trials,” he said.
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” Knowing that God has promised to always be with His people has helped to ease the worries of Silvia Brown, who admitted that she clings to this scripture. “What is there to be worried or afraid of when the God of the universe said that you should not fear? It’s a command. He is telling us to never be afraid because he is always with us. What can defeat the God who created everything? There is nothing that can defeat him or scare him that is why I can have faith in him and take comfort in when he says to it be dismayed. I am learning to trust God in this way. He is always with us, even in the worst of times,” she told Tribune Religion.

Being the Beatitudes I
’m at coffee with a friend. We are discussing the Beatitudes, the both of us, as though our lives depended on the outcome of this chat. I pause for a moment and smile as I recall the first time I was introduced to these sacred verses. I had to learn them for a school grade; primary school; I’ll never forget it. The words seemed like an impossible litany of “Blessed” phrases that I would never truly comprehend. Other times I came across these words would be in various sermons, spiritual conversations and the like, hearing each Beatitude discussed or explained so as to give greater insight into what it means to live according to Christ’s teachings. At one point, I attempted to connect the different qualities from this famous sermon to postures of praise and

worship that we should follow in order to engender a deeper love for God and how we serve Him. It was only recently that I connected with someone who lives by these eight sayings. This person made it their life’s mission to: • Adopt poorness of spirit, and accept times of mourning
• Practice meekness, and go after the things of God with abandon • Operate in mercy, and adhere to the rule of having a pure heart • Do the things that call for peace, and live doing what is right and fair at all times As the conversation continued, my friend admitted that none of this made him very popular, and shared, “The only people who often take issue with the way I live are those who call themselves “Christian”. He gave countless examples of how Christians hardly follow Christ’s example. And, of course, I let him speak, praying all the while that God’s wisdom would prevail whenever I got the proverbial “mic.” Well, I did. Here is what I said: The same Beatitudes that have encouraged your spiritual introspection should also lead you
to accept strengths and weaknesses within others. These statements were not given for us to sit in judgment, but as a measuring stick for our own lives. I can’t sit here and say you are wrong in the way you feel, but here is what I know: BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT: Entitlement exists everywhere, yet the poor in spirit – those who prefer others above themselves – also walk among us. BLESSED ARE THEY WHO MOURN: We all have had reason to mourn, and there are those of us who have not become bitter, but have reverently accepted each lesson of sadness and loss. BLESSED ARE THE MEEK: Yes, there are Christians who equate meekness with weakness, but there are those of us who have dropped our egos a long time ago and
prefer to walk humbly with God and man. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS: Not all Christians perpetuate an environment controlled by gossip and pulling others down, only those who have lost their true connection with God practice that lifestyle. BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL: There are those who would bend or even break the rules in the guise of “favour” but others lend a helping hand while maintaining the integrity of doing what is right. BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART: Not everyone has the grace to remain pure in their heart toward others, but true Christians are able to sympathise and/or empathise without seeking self-gratification. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS: There
are those of us who build pure connections on a love for the things of God or a love and acceptance of each other; only those with the poorest of intentions and spirits connect through malice, treachery or evil intent BLESSED ARE THEY WHICH ARE PERSECUTED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS' SAKE: Despite what you believe, my friend – there are still those of us who understand the worth of God’s Kingdom hangs in the balance every time we act, and are determined to act fairly and speak justly, despite the personal cost. We sat still once I ended, but on the inside I felt alive, energised to go and live the life I had just defended...determined to “be” the Beatitudes! God week!
bless
you

Anglican Church Men admonished to emulate their patron saint IN the liturgical calendar, March 19 is observed as the Feast of St Joseph of Nazareth, the earthly father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is also the patron saint of the Anglican Church Men (ACM) of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. To mark the observance of the feast of their patron, men from throughout the twin nation diocese joined in worship both in person and virtually on Saturday, March 19, in a service of thanksgiving, which was held at Christ Church Cathedral. Chief celebrant and preacher for the service was Diocesan Bishop, Rev Laish Z Boyd, Sr, who used the opportunity to both shed light on the life of St Joseph, as not much is said about him in scripture, but to also admonish the men to emulate the life of St Joseph in their daily living. He gave them five points to ponder as they related to their patron saint: • Joseph was a normal, regular sort of fellow with the ordinary life goals of having a wife, family and career. He was thrust into the circumstances that he found himself in and although he initially resisted, he later allowed God to convince him that he should proceed with his plans to make Mary his wife. The ACM were asked whether they would be open to God if they found themselves in difficult circumstances. Would they be prepared to follow God, like Joseph did? Joseph found himself in a situation that could have been embarrassing for him and devastating for Mary and her family.
It took Divine Intervention and God speaking to him in a dream for him to abandon his plans to put Mary away privately. He was called to obey the voice of God. God also speaks to us in difficult circumstances and it is about hearing what He is saying to us. We must simply put our pride aside and listen to what God is saying and do what is required or asked of us. Joseph was true to his calling and accepted the circumstances of having a wife who was carrying a child that was not his own – something that contemporary men would have serious difficulty with. What is it that you have been called by God to do and can you say that you have been true to that call? Only you know the status of your relationship with God and how effective are you in carrying out the requests that He has made of you. Joseph was admired and revered: people spoke well of him. He had the sort of persona which attracted persons to him. Can other men look at you and be drawn to you? Which sort of persons do you attract? Ask yourself: “When others see me, am I a positive influence on them?” Perhaps you “gatta UP your game” so that you can draw others to Christ through the values by which you live. It was clear that Joseph knew exactly where his heart was – it was fixed on serving God. Ask yourself: “Where is my heart as a man? Can you honestly say, ‘Create in me a clean heart, O God?’” The men were admonished to put their heart into the ministry of the ACM and challenged to

find opportunities to draw closer to God. And in so doing, attract younger persons to the organization to dispel the fact that they cater only to the more senior men in the parish when the actual age of eligibility is 18 years. The service also marked the 50th anniversary since the formation of the organisation and a highlight of the evening was the honouring all of the men who have served as the council president over the years, most of whom were recognised posthumously. The singing arm of the ACM, the Sons of Thunder rendered a special selection of Psalm 27, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” Also announced was the Branch of the Year and the Comrade of the Year for 2021. Receiving the Richard Gibbs Branch of the Year was the ACM of St Philip the Apostle in Mathew Town, Inagua, who rose to the occasion
when the island was hit by an outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The recipient of the Reginald Grant Comrade of the Year award was Kenric Major of Holy Cross Parish, New Providence. Mr Major also serves as the vice president of the Diocesan Council and led a team of workers to South Eleuthera to conduct repairs to St Luke’s Parish in Rock Sound. The next events on the ACM Council calendar of events are the Theophilus Glinton Prayer Breakfast on April 23rf and the 48th Annual ACM Conference on April 30th, under the theme “Fearlessly Made”. ACM branch presidents are encouraged to ensure all their men are registered for this oneday conference. For more information, e-mail shantyrichards76@gmail.com.

Social distancing and spiritual closeness – Reflections on COVID and Lent – SOCIAL distancing – this is now an everyday term that speaks to the current pandemic crisis facing us all. The idea that we may avoid being infected by droplets by remaining at least six feet away has caused us to separate ourselves from each other. Social media becomes the way to stay in touch so that we keep each other encouraged, pray together and praise God, using music and Scripture and meditations. The telephone calls, video calls and other means of viewing each other, allowed for the distance to be reduced while quarantined. The lessening of restrictions is a sure relief Lent is an excellent time to consider distancing ourselves from social behavior that is not in keeping with the gospel: 1. The use of obscene language, so prevalent in our society today 2. The use of abuse to control the thoughts, emotions and actions of others
REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS MEDITATION 3. The use of addictive substances that alter the mind and personality. 4. The willful indulgence in immoral and illegal activities 5. Consider what other areas of your life need to be left behind Cry out to the Lord when you are overwhelmed by your own guilt, shame and suffering, as the psalmist did: “I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear
me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. I thought about the former days, the years of long ago; I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked: “Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” (Psalm 75:1-12 GNT).
Every experience has a lesson to learn and teach. What are you learning, teaching or processing at this time? Let us look at the possible spiritual implications of this time in our national development: 1. We are in the midst of a health crisis that requires us to practice better hygiene. As we engage in handwashing let us think of the blood of Christ washing us clean from every stain of sin. Allow the Holy Spirit to sanitize you with the anointing of holiness to guide you into all truth. 2. We have faced the economic impact of restricted travel and various shortages. The lesson that is quite clear is our need for more intentional diversification of the economy, more food production, constant reevaluation of our personal approach to materialism and consumerism, and more effective stewardship as it relates to the use of the earth's resources.
3. As we journey toward Easter, we are called to be still and know that God is our God. This should happen periodically throughout the day, but was helpful when we found ourselves in quarantine. 4. The threat of possible illness and even death forces us to examine our personal relationships and very often to come to the realization that we have taken others for granted. May we all be more grateful, wherever possible, for the people in our lives, and share our thoughts and feelings about the gift of God that they are to us. Being in quarantine together hopefully created greater unity in the family. 5. Remember too that God dwells in our praises and allow your heart to cancel out fear with faithful worship, even as you still closely follow the precautions mandated by government and health officials. Be strong and
of courage as you face the future as Moses commanded Joshua to be: “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1: 7-9 NIV). • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Pope releases Vatican reform, gives weight to fighting abuse By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press POPE Francis released his long-awaited reform programme of the Holy See bureaucracy on Saturday that envisages greater decision-making roles for the laity and gives new institutional weight to efforts to fight clerical sex abuse. The 54-page text, titled “Praedicate Evanglium,” or “Proclaiming the Gospel,” replaces the founding constitution “Pastor Bonus” that was penned by St John Paul II in 1988.
Francis was elected pope in 2013 in large part on his promise to reform the bulky and inefficient Vatican bureaucracy, which acts as the organ of central governance for the 1.3-billion strong Catholic Church. He named a Cabinet of cardinal advisers who have met periodically since his election to help him draft the changes. Much of the reform work has been rolled out piecemeal over the years, with offices consolidated and financial reforms issued. But the publication of the new document, for now only in Italian,
finalises the process and puts it into effect in June. The document was released Saturday, the ninth anniversary of Francis’ installation as pope and the feast of St Joseph,
an important figure to Francis’ ministry. The new reform emphasises the missionary and charitable focus of the church as well as the need for the Vatican to be at
service both to the pope and local dioceses. It envisages greater roles for laity, making explicitly clear that lay people — not just priests, bishops or cardinals — can head a major Vatican office, and that all staff should reflect the geographic universality of the church. In one of the major changes, it brings the pope’s advisory commission on preventing sexual abuse into the Vatican’s powerful doctrine office which oversees the canonical investigations of abuse cases. Previously, the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors existed
as an ad hoc commission that reported to the pope but had no real institutional weight or power. It often found itself at odds with the more powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which reviews all cases of abuse. Now the advisory commission is part of the newly named Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, where presumably its members who include abuse survivors can exert influence on the decisions taken by the prelates who weigh whether predator priests are sanctioned and how.
