AS they slowly make their return to international competition after a series of injuries, Bahamian elite athletes Anthonique Strachan and Steven Gardiner over the weekend displayed their versatility in events they rarely compete in.
At the GC Foster Classic 2026 at the GC Foster College in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Strachan clocked a season's best of 54.03 seconds for third place in the women's 400 metres. While it was a step up from her normal 100/200m combo, Strachan, representing the MVP Track Club, lost out to

her training partner Janielle Josephs, who won in 52.37. Dhiann Rashana Salmon, of SpinTec, was second in 53.17. Meanwhile at the 20th Carolina Spring Break Camp/Classic at the Pista de Atletismo Basilio Rodriguez in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Gardiner finished third overall in the men's 100m after winning his heat in 10.39.

The 30-year-old Bahamian national record holder in both the 200 and 400 metres also competed in the 200m where he posted a second-place finish in 20.71.
Jose Figueroa from Puerto Rico emerged as the double sprint champion, taking the 200m in 10.22 and the 200m in 20.30. Yariel Perez, another Puerto Rican, was second in the 100m in 10.32.
Strachan, the 32-year-old veteran sprinter, said it was good to run her first 400m
since 2023, just before she fractured both of her shins, although most of her severe pain comes from her right leg.
"It was rough," said Strachan, who is training in Jamaica.
"I haven't done one in a while, but I've been doing over distance training, so I've been trying to get a lot faster.
"So trying to go up there was a test. It was just a feel out type thing. I will be back this weekend to do another
one just to see how it actually goes and feels."
Although her specialty is the 200m, Strachan is capable of running the 400m, but she admitted that she tends to shy away from the one-lap race because of the lactic experience she has to deal with after competing.
"My training has been great, but I still haven’t mapped out any plans for this year as yet," Strachan said.
"I didn't start training like everybody else. I'm
technically still in the background of my training," she added.
The CARIFTA two-time
Austin Sealy award winner in 2011 and 2012 went on to win the World Junior Championships' 100/200m double title in Barcelona, Spain, in 2012, and the same year she later earned the Rising Athlete of the Year award.
Strachan is not certain when she will compete in the two shorter sprint events this year.
BAAA holds key meeting ahead of CARIFTA
By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@tribunemedia.net
WITH the 2026 CARIFTA Track and Field Championships approaching, the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) held a key meeting on Tuesday at the original Thomas A Robinson Stadium ahead of the CARIFTA Games Trials.
The session, led by sports nutrition specialist Dr Kent L Bazard of Empire Sports Medicine and Performance, focused on helping athletes achieve high performance through structured nutrition habits.
The meeting included a strong turnout of CARIFTA pre-qualifiers, along with parents and coaches looking to sharpen the small details that often separate finalists from medallists.
Dr Bazard’s presentation outlined what he called the four pillars of athletic performance - training,
Trials

nutrition, recovery and consistency.
In simple terms, athletes must train with purpose, fuel their bodies correctly, prioritise sleep and hydration, and maintain those habits over time to see

results. He then broke down what an athlete’s daily plate should look like.
Many practical examples were given to help athletes understand how to incorporate this advice into training.
Fuelling around training was another focus as Dr Bazard explained that pre-training meals should include carbohydrates for energy, while longer sessions require consistent intake during activity. Post-training recovery should combine carbohydrates and protein to replenish glycogen stores and repair muscle.
He closed with the “4 R’s” of recovery nutrition - refuel, repair, rehydrate and revitalise - reinforcing the idea that what athletes do after training is just as important as the session itself.
“A lot of athletes who think about nutrition are thinking about weight loss, trying to bring down their fat percentage, and trying to improve what they eat but, as an athlete, you can't eat like a bikini model, you have to eat like a racehorse. Their priority should be fuelling for performance as well as fuelling for recovery and fuelling for maintenance, they have to be much more meticulous about their energy intake,” said Bazard.
Team Bahamas' head coach Alexis Roberts was also present at the meeting and spoke about the importance of the meeting for the athletes.
“We took an initiative from the beginning of the season to start to educate coaches, and we want to do so also with the athletes. Having this information at
their fingertips allows them to make the best decisions in terms of nutrition and training so that they are able to achieve their goals,” said Roberts.
“Many athletes will come out here and run and train hard and line up with seven other people and try to figure why they are not seeing a PR, why am I not running the same kind of times that they are running, and it's often times the small things like nutrition, recovery after workouts and getting proper sleep.”
He also pointed to The Bahamas’ strong showing at the 52nd CARIFTA Games, where the team once again ranked among the region’s best with a medal haul that included 16 golds and more than 30 overall podium finishes. He noted that expectations remain high, but so does the standard.
“We want to surpass what we did last year. If you look at the qualifying standards last year, you'll see that this year's are a little higher, every year the kids get better,” said Roberts.
“We are now seeing now, under 15 and under 17 girls running 23 seconds, and the under 20 girls doing the same thing. The kids in college are running some fast times as well, so we expect to see more medals and better medals,” said Roberts
The BAAA is expected to announce an 80-member team shortly after this weekend’s CARIFTA Trials, scheduled for March 20-22 at the same venue. Performances over those three days will finalise selections and shape the country’s medal hopes heading into Grenada 2026 at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium.

Mingoes fall to Lady Warhawks in NPVA playoff opener

THE New Providence Volleyball Association (NPVA) playoff action got underway for the third-seed University of The Bahamas Mingoes women’s volleyball team but they fell 3-0 to the second-seed Lady Warhawks in game one of their best-ofthree series on Sunday at the DW Davis Gymnasium.
It was a competitive match but UB fell 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22 to go down 1-0 in that series. Rightside hitter Anjeniker Joseph led UB with eight total points while outside hitter Hannah McBride scored seven points. Defensive specialist Patrice Ferguson chipped in with five points.
UB’s head coach, Raymond “Rhymes” Wilson, said they are excited to be in the playoffs.
“We planned to end up in the second or third seed,” Wilson said. “We are excited to meet that goal and made it to the playoffs at this level – a higher level than last year so we one up. We played a very good game and the playoffs is different from regular season.”

The second set saw a competitive start as UB trailed 8-6. They kept close to the Lady Warhawks as they trailed 16-15. UB never bounced back as they went on to trail 23-19 before falling 25-21. The Lady Warhawks led 2-0 on sets.
UB got off to a strong start in the first set going up 8-3. That lead went on to be 16-8 as they stepped up their play. They appeared to be on their way to winning the set with a 21-17 lead. However, Lady Warhawks used an 8-2 run to beat UB 25-23 in the first set.
UB needed a good start in the third set and they got just that with an 8-6 lead. They lost the lead as they trailed 15-13 midway in the set. That was the closest UB got to Lady Warhawks as they fell 25-22 to drop 3-0 on sets to get down 1-0 in the best-ofthree series. Game two of this series is set for 7.30pm on Friday, March 20, at the DW Davis Gym.

Bahamian centre Deandre Ayton contributed seven points, 11 rebounds, one steal and one block.
Los Angeles moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Houston for third in the West standings. There were 13 lead changes in a game that had a playoff atmosphere, but the Lakers ultimately won their sixth straight.

Doncic hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fading minutes of the third quarter to give the Lakers an 83-80 lead after trailing 57-51 at halftime.
Doncic was 4 for 12 on 3s in the game and needs 11 more to match D’Angelo Russell’s franchise record of 226 in a season.

Jabari Smith Jr. led Houston with 22 points. Amen Thompson had 19 and Kevin Durant added 18 for the Rockets, who committed 24 turnovers compared with just 12 for Los Angeles.
Houston was without Alperen Sengun, who was dealing with lower back pain. Sengun is averaging 20.2 points, second only to Durant for the Rockets.
The Rockets took the first meeting between the two teams this season, 119-96, in Los Angeles on December 25.

Kerr earns 600th win, and Golden State hands Wizards their 12th straight loss
By The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) —
Kristaps Porzingis scored 30 points, De’Anthony Melton added 27 and the Golden State Warriors snapped a five-game losing streak with a 125-117 victory over the Washington Wizards on Monday night, earning coach Steve Kerr his 600th career victory.
Golden State is without Stephen Curry (right knee) and Jimmy Butler (torn right ACL), and Seth Curry (left groin) and Al Horford (left calf strain) were also out Monday. The Warriors are almost assured of ending up in the play-in round in the Western Conference, but it matters where among that foursome you finish, and they were able to end their skid against the lowly Wizards.
Washington has dropped 12 in a row, but the Wizards still haven’t taken over last place in the East because Indiana has lost 13 straight.
The Warriors rested Draymond Green, Porzingis and Melton in Sunday’s loss at New York, and those three were able to help them on the second night of this back-to-back.
Golden State led by 17 in the second quarter before the Wizards fought back to within two. It was 64-57 at the half.
Golden State led by 15 early in the fourth before the Wizards made one more push. They could draw no closer than five.
Trae Young scored 21 points in 21 minutes for Washington.
HAWKS 124, MAGIC 112
ATLANTA (AP) —
Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored a career-high 41 points, Jalen Johnson had his 13th triple-double of the season and Atlanta rolled past the Magic, extending their winning streak to 10 games and snapping Orlando’s at seven.
The Hawks improved to 38-31 and reclaimed eighth place in the Eastern Conference, bumping Philadelphia back to ninth. Johnson had 24 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists in his second straight triple-double. Dyson Daniels added 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Alexander-Walker scored 24 points in the first half, helping Atlanta to a 67-50 lead at halftime. Alexander-Walker’s previous career high was 38 points against the Spurs earlier this season.
The Hawks kept momentum rolling after the intermission, scoring 23 points in the first 5:12 of the third quarter to extend
their lead to 29 points. The Hawks totaled 37 points in the period and led 104-83 at the start of the fourth.
Orlando cut the deficit to 12 points with 3 1/2 minutes remaining before Atlanta put the game back out of reach.
Paolo Banchero had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic. Desmond Bane also added 18 points.
TRAIL BLAZERS 114, NETS 95
NEW YORK (AP) — Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara each scored 18 points, and Portland coasted to a victory over Brooklyn.
Donovan Clingan finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds and reserve Scoot Henderson had 16 points for the Blazers, who never trailed and led by as many as 31.
Nic Claxton had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the short-handed Nets, who have lost four consecutive games and 14 of 16. Leading scorer Michael Porter Jr. (ankle) missed his third straight game and Noah Clowney (rest) was held out.
CELTICS 120, SUNS 112
BOSTON (AP) — Jaylen Brown had 18 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter and Jayson Tatum scored 21 in his fifth game back from
an Achilles tendon injury to help Boston beat Phoenix.
Devin Booker scored 40 for the Suns, who have lost back-to-back games after snapping a four-game winning streak. Jalen Green scored 21 for Phoenix.
Derrick White, who was presented with February’s Eastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Month Award before the game, had 21 points for Boston, and Payton Pritchard scored 19.

NEW ORLEANS (AP)
— Zion Williamson scored 27 points and New Orleans defeated injury-depleted Dallas.
Saddiq Bey had 23 points, while Jeremiah Fears and Trey Murphy III each added 17 to help the Pelicans win for the eighth time in 12 games.
Naji Marshall scored 32 points for the Mavs against his former team. Dallas rookie Cooper Flagg, the top pick in the 2025 draft, had 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
BULLS 132, GRIZZLIES 107
CHICAGO (AP) — Josh Giddey had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists for his fourth triple-double in five games, and Chicago blew out Memphis to hand
the depleted Grizzlies their eighth straight loss. Giddey is third in the NBA with 12 triple-doubles this season, trailing Nikola Jokic (27) of the Denver Nuggets and Jalen Johnson (13) of the Atlanta Hawks. Giddey is averaging 17.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists, all career highs. The fifth-year guard has been limited to 46 games this season by hamstring and ankle injuries.
Matas Buzelis led the Bulls with 29 points, including five 3-pointers. The second-year forward, who was the 11th pick in the 2024 draft, has logged three of the four highest-scoring totals of his career in just the last three weeks.
Tre Jones added 17 points and Rob Dillingham had 15 off the bench for the Bulls, who started a four-game homestand by winning for just the fifth time in their last 23 games. The Bulls, who are in 12th place in the Eastern Conference and six games out of the last play-in spot, outscored the Grizzlies 71-50 in the second half.
Cedric Coward led the Grizzlies with 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting, and Jaylen Wells and Taylor Hendricks each added 16 points. The Grizzlies, who have shelved standout Zach Edey for the
remainder of the season and not had star Ja Morant play for nearly two months, were also without starters Ty Jerome (bruised shoulder) and G.G. Jackson (sore foot). Memphis is 3-15 in its last 18 games.
SPURS 119, CLIPPERS 115 INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Victor Wembanyama had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and San Antonio overcame an early 14-point deficit before blowing most of a 24-point lead and recovering to hold off Los Angeles.
Stephon Castle had 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the Spurs (50-18), who reached 50 wins for the first time since 2016-17 and trail the first-place Thunder by three games in the West. Devin Vassell added 20 points. Fighting to secure a spot for the play-in tournament, the Clippers’ second straight loss dropped them back to .500 with Kawhi Leonard watching from the bench. The NBA’s sixth-leading scorer sat out with a sprained left knee. Darius Garland led six Clippers in double figures with 25 points and 10 assists. Jordan Miller had 22 points off the bench, which outscored the Spurs’ reserves 57-30.

Broncos get star wide receiver Waddle from Dolphins in blockbuster trade, AP sources say
By ROB MAADDI and ARNIE STAPLETON AP Pro Football Writers
THE Denver Broncos' offseason is no longer muted.
The Broncos are acquiring standout wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in a blockbuster deal that sends three draft picks to the Miami Dolphins, including a firstrounder, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press yesterday.
Both spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been announced.
The Dolphins will receive the 30th-overall pick in next month’s NFL draft along with picks in the third and fourth rounds. Denver will
get Miami’s fourth-rounder along with Waddle. The Broncos were the only team not to sign a free agent outside of retaining their own players before making this deal. Waddle gives Bo Nix another main playmaker along with Courtland Sutton, boosting a passing offence that finished 11th in the NFL last season.
Waddle's arrival will give the Broncos a bona fide top wide receiving duo for the first time since the late Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, who helped propel Denver to a Super Bowl championship a decade ago. The Broncos were the AFC’s No. 1 seed last season but lost to New
England in the snowy AFC championship game without Nix. He broke his ankle in a game against Buffalo in the divisional round. Denver's defence was one of the league's best and produced an NFL-high and franchise-record 68 sacks, led by Nik Bonitto's 14. The Broncos' offence was another story, often sputtering until Nix's fourth-quarter heroics. Denver won a dozen onescore games in 2025 and had 10 comebacks during an 11-game winning streak. Nix has gone 25-11 in his two seasons, including the playoffs. But he's done it largely without a true No. 1 receiver or top-tier tight end.

WALK RACE SOLIDARITY AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
THE Women Walk 2026 - Prayer March in Solidarity Against Domestic Violence and Child Abuse is scheduled for 7:30am Saturday from Clifford Park East and travel to Bay Street and back to Clifford Park East.
Last year’s event brought together hundreds of participants who filled the streets of downtown New Providence in a powerful display of unity and faith, including Commissioner of Police Shanta Knowles as they stood against child abuse and domestic violence.
Women Walk is a faith-centred prayer walk which brings together women, men, families, churches and community partners to stand in unity through prayer and praise. The walk begins and ends at Clifford Park. Participants are requested to be in place by 7:30am for an 8am departure time.
Denver's offence also lacked a playmaker in the backfield after J.K. Dobbins suffered what turned out to be a season-ending foot injury in mid-November.
Waddle, a first-round pick in 2021, had three straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons to begin his career but hasn’t reached that total since 2023.
The 27-year-old Waddle has averaged 81 receptions, 1,098 yards receiving and six touchdowns over his five-year career. He had a career-high 104 catches as a rookie and had 1,356 yards receiving in 2022, when he led the NFL with 18.1 yards per catch.
Overall, Waddle has 373 receptions for 5,039 yards and 26 TDs.

The rebuilding Dolphins previously released five-time All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. They fired coach Mike
