Wanya McCoy returns

‘VJ’
By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@tribunemedia.net
A YEAR ago, Wanya McCoy had to watch the National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships from the sidelines as he sat out on crutches with torn quads in two pieces.
Over the weekend, he walked away from the competition in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a personal best performance - second place - in the men's 200 metres.
What a difference a year has made for the senior sprinter competing for the University of Florida Gators, who had transferred from Clemson University in 2024.
McCoy, one of three Bahamians contesting an individual event at the three-day meet, posted a lifetime best of 20.17
seconds in winning the first of two segments of the final of the one-lap race on the 200m track on Saturday.
However, University of South Carolina's Garrett Kaalund came behind after watching his performance and ran a faster personal best time of 19.95 to erase Wallace Spearmon's facility record of 20.10 set in 2005 and both of Elijah Hall's meet and collegiate records of 20.02 from 2018.
Although he won his heat in the preliminaries as well in 20.40 on Friday, McCoy admitted that he could have ran a little faster to secure a spot in the faster section of the final and challenge Kaalund for the top spot.
"But I know, no matter what, I had to try and establish a good time to beat to at least make the other section run faster to beat me," McCoy said.
"I'm satisfied with the run because last year this

“VJ” Edgecombe scored 18 points with three assists and two blocks to help in the win. The rookie grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds for his third double-double this season. Justin Edwards contributed 21 points. The Sixers were playing without Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Kelly Oubre Jr. due to injuries. Deni Avdija led Portland with 25 points, and Jerami Grant added 20. But the Trail Blazers shot just 17 for 53 from 3-point range (32.7%). Donovan Clingan added 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Portland led by one point at halftime, 54-53, before the Sixers stretched the lead to as many as 10 points in the third quarter, helped by nine points from Edwards in the period. The Sixers took their largest lead of the game at 101-87 with 5:34 left, but Portland answered with a 10-0 run.
An Edgecombe jumper with 1:53 to play and a steal and slam by Edwards with 1:20 left helped Philadelphia seal the win.
Up next 76ers: Open a three-game trip in Denver on Tuesday. Trail Blazers: Continue a five-game trip in Brooklyn tonight.

time I was on crutches and couldn't walk so it's a testament of how great God is and His plans for me."
Yet, despite where he came from since last year, McCoy said he never doubted that he would not come back better than before.
"Today was probably the first time in a while I haven't had any nerves since I started running again," he said. I trusted what I've been doing in practice and honestly I could run sub 20 indoors but I don’t know if I'll ever run another indoor race, lol.
"But today I woke up telling myself that I haven't run a personal best all year nor have I placed where I want to or capable of placing at the NCAA meets. I just needed to prove to myself that I have what it takes and that I am one of the best in the college field, if not the best."
The Berry Islands native, who switched from playing basketball to running track for Dame Doris Johnson and Queen's College, pointed out that to be able to walk away with second place shows that the Lord isn't done with him just yet.
"A lot more is to come outdoors," said McCoy, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday on March 29. "I will make sure of it. I hate losing."
Also at the meet over the weekend, Tennessee's senior Javonya Valcourt needed to run faster than her lifetime best of 51.73 to get into the final of the women's 400m.
The 21-year-old 2024 Olympian and 2025 World Championship competitor did 52.35 for third place in her heat of the two-lap race on Friday for 15th overall.

Rhema Collins and FIU Panthers fall short COLLINS
RHEMA Collins gave it her best but it wasn't enough as the Florida International University Panthers women's basketball team fell short in the semifinals of the 2026 Conference USA Basketball Championships. Collins, the 21-year-old newly minted CUSA Player of the Year and the number two seed Panthers suffered a 74-69 loss to the sixthseeded Missouri State Bears at the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Collins, the 6-foot, twoinch transfer guard from the University of Mississippi Rebels this season, played 38 minutes as she led the Panthers with 26 points, 20 of them coming in the second half. The daughter of Angela and Steve Collins who graduated from Webb School added seven rebounds and four steals. Senior Parris Atkins ignited FIU with 20 of her 24 points in the second half to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and as many steals. The Panthers, who dropped to

20-11 and 12-6, saw their offence come alive in the second quarter as they outscored the Bears 20-18, but headed into the half down 36-28. Missouri State kept their foot on the gas in the third, scoring 18 points to FIU's 16, heading into the fourth quarter at 54-44. Collins put up 11 of FIU's 16 third-quarter points.
But down 15 with 6:42 to go in the fourth quarter, FIU clawed its way back, going on a 19-6 run to cut the Missouri State lead to just one with 36 seconds left.
After a foul and subsequent free throws to give the Bears a three-point lead, Atkins had a chance to tie the game with just 15 seconds left, but was unable to convert the triple, sending the Panthers home in the semifinals of the tournament.
Missouri State, by the way, went on to win the title as they stunned the No.1 seed LA Tech 43-38 in the championship game that was played on Saturday.

Junior golfers
Maximilien, 11 and Roisin claim national titles
By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@tribunemedia.net
JUNIOR golfers from across The Bahamas gathered at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island over the weekend for the Junior National Golf Championships, a two-day tournament that featured many of the country’s top junior players competing for World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points and a chance to secure spots on the junior national team. Leading the way was 11-year-old junior golf phenom Maximilien Demole, who successfully defended his title in the under-13 boys’ division. Demole once again showed why he is regarded as one of the country’s brightest young talents, finishing the tworound event at +8 to hold off a strong field and repeat as champion. His repeat shows the steady rise of the young golfer who continues to build an impressive résumé at the junior level.
“It feels good because it wasn't easy because the wind was very strong on the last day and I had some competition out there,” said Demole. “I just focused more on my game and shots instead of the wind and just tried to compromise with the wind.” Demole says in the future he wants to win a PGA Masters tournament.
In the under-18 girls’ division, Roisin Scanlon delivered one of the most impressive performances of the tournament. Competing in the event for the first time, Scanlon captured the title with an even par finish across the two rounds.
“I’m really pleased. We’ve been out here for a while in the baking heat, so it was really nice for it to be worth it,” said Scanlon. “This was my first time playing the tournament and first time playing in Ocean Club, and I really enjoyed the experience. I thought the course was really nice, and I had a great time. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the tournament, so to finally play in it and win it is really nice.”
The weekend tournament once again showcased the growing depth of junior golf in The Bahamas as young players continue to gain valuable competitive experience while chasing opportunities to represent the country on the international stage.

Deandre Ayton just misses double double with
nine points and nine rebounds
By The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP)
— Luka Doncic made a fall-away jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining in overtime and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets 127-125 on Saturday night.
Austin Reaves forced overtime when he rebounded his intentionally missed free throw and made a floater with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation.
Doncic created enough distance from Spencer Jones to make the 17-foot shot, finishing with 30 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds as he continued his spectacular play during Los Angeles’ five-game winning streak. Doncic then blocked Tim Hardaway Jr.’s desperation heave following a Denver timeout.
Reaves finished with 32 points, making the first free throw and then perfectly executing his missed second attempt off the front of the rim after the Nuggets fouled him to prevent a tying 3-point attempt leading 118-115 with 5.2 seconds left.
Nikola Jokic had 24 points, 16 rebounds and 14 assists for his 27th triple-double of the season. Aaron Gordon led the Nuggets with 27 points and Hardaway finished with 20.
Jamal Murray fouled out 31 seconds into overtime, finishing with five points, six rebounds and six assists on a miserable 1-for-14 night.
HAWKS 122, BUCKS 99
ATLANTA (AP) — CJ McCollum scored 30 points, Jalen Johnson had his 12th triple-double of the season and Atlanta beat Milwaukee Bucks for its ninth straight victory.
Johnson finished with 23 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds as Atlanta extended the longest current winning streak in the NBA. McCollum made

seven 3-pointers and moved ahead of Paul Pierce into 16th place on the career list with 2,147. Nickeil Alexander-Walker had 20 points for the Hawks, who led 60-52 after a first half with six lead changes and four ties. The Hawks then broke it open in the third quarter by outscoring Milwaukee 35-26, with McCollum scoring 11. Ryan Rollins scored 22 points for the Bucks, who were without Giannis Antetokounmpo after he sprained his left ankle during Milwaukee’s 112-105 loss to Miami on Thursday. Kevin Porter Jr. added 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
SPURS 115, HORNETS 102
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Victor Wembanyama had 32 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks in his return from a onegame absence, leading San Antonio to a victory over Charlotte.
Miles Bridges had 22 points and Kon Knueppel added 20 for Charlotte, which had won two straight and eight of 10.
The Spurs have won 17 of 19 to tighten their grip on second in the Western Conference. San Antonio (49-18) is 7 1/2 games ahead of No. 3 Houston (41-25) and three games behind Oklahoma City (52-15) for first.
The Spurs closed their longest homestand 5-1, with their only loss coming as Wembanyama watched from the bench because of a sore right calf in a 136-131 loss to Denver on Thursday that snapped a five-game winning streak. Wembanyama had an immediate impact with 18 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the first half.
CELTICS 111, WIZARDS 100
BOSTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum had 20 points and 14 rebounds in a season-high 32 minutes, Neemias Queta had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Boston withstood a late charge to beat Washington for its 11th
straight loss. Tatum had his second double-double since making his season debut earlier this month. Jaylen Brown added 16 points to help the Celtics snap a twogame skid. Boston’s lead grew to 30 points in the third quarter, but Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla kept Tatum on the court to allow him to reach a high for minutes in the four games he’s played in since his return from Achilles tendon surgery. He had been capped at 27 minutes in his previous three games. Washington, which was coming off erasing a 17-point deficit to force overtime in a loss at Orlando on Thursday, chopped Boston’s lead to 12 in the fourth quarter. But the Celtics got a layup from Tatum and 3-pointer by Sam Hauser to help them close it out.
Tristan Vukcevic had 22 points to lead the Wizards.
MAGIC 121, HEAT 117
MIAMI (AP) — Paolo Banchero scored 27 points, Desmond Bane added 21 and Orlando beat Miami, becoming the second team in the last 30 years to beat the same opponent five times in one season.
Wendell Carter Jr. scored 15 for the Magic, who won their seventh straight and snapped Miami’s season-best, seven-game winning streak.
Orlando led by as many as 22, before Miami twice got within two in the final 18.5 seconds. Orlando (38-28) moved a game clear of Miami (3830) in the race for fifth in the Eastern Conference, plus is 10 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2023-24 season.
Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 22, while Bam Adebayo and Norman Powell each had
20 for Miami, which hadn’t gone 0-5 against one team since doing so against New York — then coached by now-Heat President Pat Riley — in 1992-93.
The only other instance in the last three decades: New Orleans went 5-0 against Sacramento in 2023-24.
KINGS 118,
CLIPPERS 109
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Russell Westbrook had 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his 209th career triple-double and DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points to lead Sacramento to a victory over Los Angeles.
Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points before leaving with a sprained left ankle for the Clippers, whose four-game winning streak was stopped. It was Leonard’s 45th consecutive game with at least 20 points, topping Bob McAdoo’s franchise record set during the 1974-75 season when the team was based in Buffalo. Leonard was injured with 9:27 left in the fourth quarter when he was guarding DeRozan and landed awkwardly before backpedaling a few steps and tumbling to the court.
He popped up quickly, but limped noticeably to the Clippers’ bench before heading to the locker room. Leonard didn’t return to the game and there was no immediate word on whether he might miss time.
Precious Achiuwa added 25 points and 13 rebounds, Maxime Raynaud had 23 points and Daeqwon Plowden had 15 for the Kings, who have won three of their last four games. Darius Garland added 25 points and Bennedict Mathurin had 24 for Los Angeles, which had won its last five at home.

Bruno Fernandes nears assists record as Manchester United beats Aston Villa 3-1, Liverpool held
By JAMES ROBSON AP Soccer Writer
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Bruno
Fernandes closed in on the Premier League’s assists record as Manchester United tightened its grip on a return to the Champions League with a 3-1 win against Aston Villa yesterday.
Tottenham avoided extending an unwanted club low by halting its losing run with a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Liverpool.
Fernandes provided assists for two of United's goals against Villa to take his tally for the season to 16. The record for a single Premier League campaign is 20 — jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Fernandes, who now has 100 assists as a United player, has up to eight more games to set a new record in English soccer's top division.
Of more importance to United was a seventh win in nine games under head coach Michael Carrick. United is third -- three points clear of Villa in fourth.
Liverpool is two points further back in fifth after squandering victory against Spurs when Richarlison struck in the 90th minute to stun the Anfield crowd. Tottenham had looked set
to extend its all-time worst losing run to seven games in all competitions when trailing Dominik Szoboszlai's first-half free kick.
The draw left Tottenham one point clear of the relegation zone. Nottingham Forest climbed out of the bottom three on goal difference with a 0-0 draw against Fulham.
Crystal Palace and Leeds also drew 0-0.
Fernandes inspires United Fernandes' double assist saw him set a new club record for United in a single Premier League season - overtaking David Beckham's 15 in 1999-2000.
"It is a huge achievement for me, but the main achievement will be finishing in the top spots at the end of the season,” he said.
United is on course for a return to the Champions League after two seasons outside of European club soccer's top competition.
The top four are guaranteed to qualify, with English teams likely to earn a fifth spot because of their performances in Europe this season.
The victory saw United close the gap on second-place Manchester City to seven points.

more scrutiny on Liverpool coach Arne Slot.
After delivering the league title in his first season at the club, he is now fighting to secure a top five finish.
Liverpool is fifth - one point ahead of Chelsea.
“It is a home game and we were ahead for so many minutes. Of course, it is two points dropped,” Slot said.
Liverpool hosts Galatasaray in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, trailing 1-0 after the first leg.
“At the end of the day, we’ll see where we finish, and if we can finish second, even better,” Fernandes said. “Even though it wouldn’t change much what we are getting next season, we want to finish as high as possible, that’s obvious.”
Casemiro headed United in front from Fernandes' corner in the 53rd minute.

Villa levelled through Ross Barkley, but Fernandes was the provider again when Matheus Cunha sidefooted past Emiliano Martinez. Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to score his eighth goal in 10 games and effectively seal the win.
Late drama at Anfield Igor Tudor picked up his first point as Tottenham interim coach at the end of a week that has seen speculation around his position intensify.
On the back of four straight losses since his appointment last month, Tudor went into the game at Anfield with pressure mounting. And inside 18 minutes, Spurs trailed to Szoboszlai's goal.
But a reprieve came in the form of Richarlison's late strike, which may place
Relegation fight West Ham's draw with Man City on Saturday meant Forest dropped into the bottom three. But Forest quickly climbed back out of the relegation zone on goal difference with a point at home against Fulham. Tottenham is one place and one point above Forest. Spurs defender Radu Dragusin described the draw with Liverpool as “massive for our season.” Leeds is 15th on 32 points - three points clear of the bottom three. It could have been an even better day for Daniel Farke's team had Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored with a first-half penalty. But Leeds held on for a point even after going down to 10 men when Gabriel Gudmundsson was sent off before halftime.

Team Bahamas delivers ‘a strong showing’ at the International Women’s Day Golf Extravaganza
By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@tribunemedia.net
THE Bahamas Golf Federation sent a four-player team made up of Kyshna Radnetter, Jenna Bayles, Miranda Tucker and Payton Haye to compete against a field of international players in the women’s event, which celebrated the growing presence of women in the game across the region.
Team Bahamas delivered a strong showing at the International Women’s Day Golf Extravaganza at the

Barbados Golf Club, finishing second overall in the team competition.
Team Bahamas produced a combined net score of 66 to secure second place in the team standings. The team also posted a gross score of 62 during the competition, highlighting a consistent performance across all rounds of play.
“It was an experience like no other. We had a great time, and we got to play
a lot of really, really good golf. The conditions were favourable, a little bit windy but not too much, but it was a good weekend,” said Tucker. “There were some very good juniors, and this was their host course, and we were trying to catch them. We came very close but just fell a little bit short. We were happy we beat the rest of the teams and, in that instance, we considered that a win.”
The tournament featured a mix of formats, including a two-man better ball scramble where the pairing of Jenna Bayles and Miranda Tucker finished third overall after a solid round that kept them in contention among several experienced teams.
“The experience was very fun, and competing in the tournament was so nice, meeting other people, especially competing in another
country in the Caribbean,” said Bayles. “Miranda and I gained the advantage because we know how both of us play because we always play together in tournaments, so if I mess up, I know that she has my back, and if she messes up, I have her back.” The result continued a productive stretch for Bahamian women’s golf as local players gained more opportunities to
compete in regional tournaments. Events like this provide valuable competitive experience while also strengthening connections between women golfers throughout the Caribbean. With another strong international performance on the books, the quartet returned home with momentum and confidence as Bahamian women’s golf continues to grow on the regional stage.
