GYMNASTICS FEDERATION MOURNING LOSS OF THOMPSON GYMNASTICS Federation of Bahamas executives, family and friends are mourning the passing of President Barbara Thompson on March 14, according to a press release. “Our Barefoot President as she was sometimes called was a humble lady with a giving spirit. She was the founder of Gymnastics in the Bahamas, a sport she was very passionate about. “Barbara established the Nassau GymNastics Club after moving to the Bahamas when she was just 20 years old.

“The Gymnastics Federation of the Bahamas was later formed to consolidate the efforts and assist young athletes in this sport. “Over the past four years we were able to participate at international competitions such as the World Gymnastics Championships held in Glasgow, Scotland and the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. “Barbara’s only wish was to one day see a gymnast from the Bahamas compete at the Olympics. The Dolphins were eliminated with a first round loss to the University of Central Florida Knights 65-60 at the CFE Arena in Orlando, Florida, last night. Neely finished with four points and four rebounds. The Knights advanced to play the winner of the Alabama-Southern game in the second round, to be hosted March 17-20. The Dolphins got off to a slow start and scored just eight points in the first quarter. Neely was a key contributor off the bench and scored four points in the second as JU outscored UCF 13-5 in the period. The Dolphins took a 21-16 lead at the half. UCF had a turnaround in the third quarter and outscored JU 18-14, but the Dolphins sill took a 35-34 lead into the fourth. Tied at 38 with 6:36 left to play in regulation, the Knights went ahead by five, but the Dolphins trimmed the lead to just one with 1:04 left. The Knights were up three with eight seconds left when the Dolphins forced overtime when Jasmyn Brown made a three to beat the buzzer. The Knights led by as much as five in overtime. For the second consecutive season, the Jaguars came up just short in a bid for the NCAA Tournament but earned a berth to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The tournament field consists of 32 automatic invitations – one from each conference – and 32 atlarge teams. As a runner-up in the league tournament, Florida Gulf Coast received the ASUN’s automatic qualifier.

Island Luck sponsors CARIFTA he final opportunity for aspiring athletes to qualify for the 2018 Flow CARIFTA Track and Field Championships will take place this weekend and a new corporate partner came on board to sponsor the trials and next month’s main event. The BAAAs/Island Luck CARIFTA Trials will be hosted Friday and Saturday at the Thomas A Robinson as the organisation prepares to ratify the roster for the meet which is now approximately two weeks away. Under the theme “Faster Further, Higher”, the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Associations (NACAC) will stage the 47th edition of the meet March 30 to April 2 in honour of the late Dr Bernard Nottage. The IL Cares Foundation presented the CARIFTA Local Organising Committee with a $50,000 cheque for both events. Island Luck CFO, Dirk Simmons, said the decision to sponsor the trials and support the LOC as a national supplier was in line with his organisation’s effort to inspire the youth of the country. “We are happy to support the BAAAs and partner with you in both the trials and the CARIFTA Track and Field Championships. We will represent Jacksonville University and the ASUN to the best of our ability.” The Dolphins set a new single season programme

record with 24 wins. Last season, the Dolphins tied the previous record of 23 – set back in the 2007-08 season. Both years, JU finished 23-9 overall. Last season, the Dolphins also lost in the first round of the WNIT to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. McPhee-McCuin led the Dolphins to 23 wins, which tied the school mark for most wins in a season, and they also had the best RPI in the conference. In the 2015-16 campaign, McPhee-McCuin led the Dolphins to a 22-11 record, the A-Sun tournament title and their first NCAA Tournament championship berth in school history.

The team, coached by Godfrey Bowe from Grand Bahama, faced tennis powerhouse Dominican Republic yesterday in their effort to secure a place in the main draw.

SPORTS NOTES BASKETBALL NPBA THE New Providence Basketball Association opened its postseason on Monday night at the AF Adderley Gymnasium with the Caro Contractors Resistance and the Triple K Stampers taking the opener in the men’s division II encounters. Caro Contractors nipped the Rockets 105-103 to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three playoff series, while Triple K held off the Y-Care Elites 77-75 to earn their 1-0 lead in their series. The playoffs will continue throughout the week with games being played in both the division II and division one series. The winners from both divisions will earn the rights to represent New Providence in the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s National Round Robin Tournament next month.

ARMBRISTER WIN Donte Armbrister won his doubles match on Tuesday with his Canadian partner Cleeve Harper as they pulled off a 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 decision over Danila Borovykh of Russia and Andrew Patrick Mueller of Guatemala. Armbrister played both singles and doubles matches yesterday against the No.2 seed Andrew Dale of the United States of America. BSAA POSTSEASON The Bahamas Scholastic Athletic Association continued its postseason basketball classic on Monday at the AF Adderley Gymnasium.  In the primary boys division, Carlton E Francis defeated Christian Heritage School 34-20.  In the junior boys, Akhepran International Academy defeated Jordan Prince William 37-12 as Clinton Brennen scored 11 points in the win.

Antonio Dievieull had six in the loss.   And Christian Heritage School defeated Freedom Baptist Academy 25-17 as Tiore’ Hart scored seven in the win. Deontae Johnson had seven in the loss.  In the intermediate boys division, Akhepran International Academy defeated Doris Johnson High School 35-25 as Saheed Sanusi scored a game high 14 points in the win. Matthew Saunders had 10 in the loss.  And Jordan Prince William defeated Teleos Christian School 26-23 as Darius Brown scored 10 points. Davito McIntosh had a game high 12 in the loss. And in the senior girls’ division, Freedom Baptist Academy defeated Akhepran International Academy 21-6 as Kevonne McCaulsky scored a game high eight points in the win. Evante Munroe had three in a losing effort. The postseason will continue throughout the week, starting at 4pm.

Promises turn into paydays as NFL business year begins By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer ALL those promises worth millions upon millions to free agents turned into paydays yesterday when the NFL’s business year began. Of course, teams needed to clear salary cap space or rejigger their ledgers to make it work, and they’ll still be doing so for months. While the likes of Drew Brees, Malcolm Butler and Andrew Norwell cashed in bigtime, having reached agreements in the past two days before everything became official, some value entered the marketplace. Arizona released safety Tyrann Mathieu when it couldn’t rework his deal. On Tuesday, the Cardinals let running back Adrian Peterson go. Baltimore cut receiver Jeremy Maclin. Detroit said goodbye to tight end Eric Ebron. Pittsburgh tore up a secondary that often was torn up by opposing quarterbacks, releasing Mike Mitchell, Robert Golden and William Gay. But Carolina had more success with a veteran, completing a one-year deal with defensive end Julius Peppers. The 38-year-old Peppers, who contemplated retirement after 17 pro seasons, remains with the Panthers for $5 million, with $2.5 million guaranteed, a person familiar with the situation said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the team does not release financial terms of contracts. “I am fired up to have him back,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “It was amazing to have him as part of what we are trying to build and I think he can help us get to the next level.” Cleveland, meanwhile, did nothing more than listen to one of its greatest players, tackle Joe Thomas, announce his retirement. The Browns save his $10.3 million salary for 2018 and a $3 million bonus but lose their best player and leader in the expansion era (1999-present), a 10-time Pro Bowler. “This was an extremely difficult decision, but the

right one for me and my family,” Thomas said. “Playing in the NFL has taken a toll on my body and I can no longer physically compete at the level I need to.” CARDINALS Mathieu was due for $18.75 million of his contract to be guaranteed when the league year officially begins. By cutting him, Arizona will save close to $5 million in cap space. Mathieu became a star in the Arizona secondary after being selected in the third round of the 2013 draft following a troubled college career at LSU. He was an All-Pro in 2015, when he had five interceptions and 17 passes defenced. But he also has been plagued by injuries and only last season did Mathieu appear in all 16 games. RAVENS Baltimore frees up an estimated $5 million in salary cap space by releasing Maclin, who signed on as a free agent in June. But Maclin missed two games with a shoulder injury, two more with knee issues, and finished with only 40 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns. The 84 receptions he had over the past two seasons (2016 with Kansas City) are three fewer than he had with the Chiefs in 2015. Then the Ravens agreed to deals with receivers John Brown and Ryan Grant. Brown, 27, spent four years in Arizona and is a speedy deep threat, something Baltimore desperately needs. He can also return kicks. Grant, also 27, was with Washington for four seasons. 49ERS San Francisco agreed to a four-year contract with running back Jerick McKinnon and a five-year deal with centre-guard Weston Richburg. McKinnon replaces departing starter Carlos Hyde and Richburg could start anywhere in the interior line. “We see Weston as one of the top young interior offensive linemen in the

Washington, the Bills get a needed pass rusher, albeit a player coming off a major injury. Murphy had 15 sacks in 47 games, including nine in 2016, then sat out last season after tearing two ligaments in his left knee in a preseason game. The Bills finished tied for 30th in the NFL with just 27 sacks last season. The Bills added defensive backfield depth by agreeing with safety Rafael Bush on a two-year contract, and got linebacker Julian Stanford on a twoyear contract. FALCONS The Falcons addressed a need by signing offensive guard Brandon Fusco, who started 16 games for San Francisco last season, to a three-year deal. Fusco, who began his career with the Vikings, could immediately start at right guard. DOLPHINS Five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh officially was released, when the trades to acquire defensive end Robert Quinn and send Jarvis Landry to the Cleveland Browns were formalised. CHARGERS Tight end Virgil Green got a three-year contract and safety Adrian Phillips re-signed with a one-year deal. Green spent the past seven seasons with the Broncos, starting all 16 games last season and winning a Super Bowl ring in February 2016. His addition adds intrigue to whether the Chargers will bring back 37-year-old tight end Antonio Gates, who hopes to extend his record-setting career for at least another season. JETS New York signed linebacker Avery Williamson to a three-year contract worth $22.5 million. Williamson spent his first four NFL seasons with Tennessee and led the Titans in tackles in two of those years. The Jets also tendered wide receiver Quincy Enunwa at the secondround level, worth $2.9 million. Enunwa was emerging as a threat before missing last season with a bulging disk in his neck that required surgery. He had a breakout season in 2016, catching 58 passes for 857 yards and four touchdowns.

Curry wanted to play on 30th birthday, but focuses on ankle By JANIE MCCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, California (AP) — Stephen Curry wanted nothing more than to play on his milestone 30th birthday, a home game against the Lakers last night. The two-time MVP is doing his best to see the big picture, though. The playoffs are a month away and he plans to be in top form to lead another special Golden State run. “I’ve been through this countless times but I feel very confident in the approach that we’re taking to get to as close to 100 per cent as possible going into the stretch run of the regular season and then obviously the playoffs,” Curry said after his team’s shootaround yesterday. “I would obviously love to be out there playing every game down the stretch, to be out there with my squad. At this point there’s enough time, not just me, we have a bunch of guys banged up, that we all can prioritise health and understand that we need to all be ready to go.” Curry will miss at least the next four games for the ailing defending champions as he heals from his latest right ankle injury, while Splash Brother Klay Thompson also will miss those games. The Warriors announced on Tuesday’s injury report that Thompson has a fractured right thumb that will sideline him until he is re-evaluated March 22. After Wednesday’s matchup with Los Angeles, they also will miss Friday at home against the Kings, then road games at

Phoenix on Saturday and at San Antonio on Monday. Golden State is 11-6 this season without Curry, who missed an 11-game stretch with the ankle in December then injured it again March 2 at Atlanta but was able to play. Draymond Green was also out Wednesday with soreness in his right shoulder. Backup centre David West was sidelined for a fifth consecutive game with a cyst in his right arm. Rookie Chris Boucher was up from the G League Warriors for his possible NBA debut. It was still hard for Curry to think about missing Wednesday’s game. “Selfishly I was always keying in on tonight just because it was a big day,” Curry said. “You only turn 30 once. I have to keep a big-picture perspective. I understand the thought process around not just how my ankle feels today versus next Wednesday versus next Friday but the things that I need to do rehab-wise to strengthen my core, everything that protects your ankle so that when I do come back I’m ready. Obviously there’s risk playing. The reason I hurt my ankle, I landed on somebody’s foot twice. You can’t help that. I’ve got to do whatever I can to lower the probability of putting myself in that situation again, especially at this point in the season.” Curry rolled his ankle driving left for a layup at the 9:38 mark of the first quarter in the win against the Spurs. By reaching the quarter-finals, Kasatkina is projected to surpass her career-best ranking of 17th. She has beaten all four current Grand Slam titleholders in the past year, including US Open winner Sloane Stephens in straight sets this week.

Messi reaches 100 CL goals, Barcelona beats Chelsea 3-0 By JOSEPH WILSON Associated Press BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Lionel Messi scored his 99th and 100th goals in the Champions League to send Barcelona through to the quarterfinals for the 11th straight season with a 3-0 win over Chelsea yesterday. Barcelona advanced 4-1 on aggregate following a 1-1 first-leg draw in London.
