COACH Dominic Demeritte said it was "business as usual" as his Life University Running Eagles clinched the 2026 Southern State Athletic Conference (SSAC) Indoor Championships over the weekend.
The Running Eagles, whose coaching staff also includes fellow Bahamian Jamal Wilson as an assistant coach for jumps, captured the men's title, while their ladies were runners-up at the meet in Gainesville, Florida.
Life University emerged as the men's champions with 223 points, compared to second place finishers William Carey with 185.50 and the women collected 162 to trail champions William Carey, who posted 241.
Demeritte, who has served as the head coach for the Running Eagles since 2021, said it "business as usual.”
"It was a great, solid all-around experience. We got contributions from every single individual we took, so I can't ask for more."
As the last competitor to win the men's 200m title in a national record of 20.66 at
the World Indoor Championships in 2004 in Budapest, Hungary, before it was discounted, Demeritte said it's important for his athletes to enjoy a good indoor season that will end with the NAIA Nationals because it propels them into outdoors.
As they prepare for outdoor season, Demeritte said he's pleased with the development of Essence Sands, who competes in the heptathlon.
"They are both performing very well, doing their personal best times, so we're looking forward to them when they get outdoors," said Demeritte, whose record has since been broken by Terrance Jones with 20.21 at the Big 12 Championships on February 24, 2024.
He has ran a lifetime best of 20.21 in the 200m outdoors.
Demeritte, who is also coaching graduate Printassia Johnson, who is now competing as a professional in the women's 400m, said the success of his Running Eagles is shared with his coaching staff that includes Wilson, who is responsible for the jumps.
"He's a great guy, great for kids, great for all of the kids because he's a great motivator and a mentor," Demeritte said.
"Coaching is all about the Xs and Os and he fits all two," Demeritte said.
Wilson, a two-time Olympian (2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and 2021 in Tokyo, Japan), said he's pleased to be a member of Demeritte's Running Eagles coaching staff since last year after he spent the previous two years with fellow Bahamian Chris “Fireman” Brown.
"It's good synergy. Dominic is my senior, someone who I can look up to and who I can trust as a leader," Wilson said.
"I bring a pedigree as someone who understands the sport and how to interact with the athletes, so it's a great environment."
As a former athlete, who competed at every level in the men's high jump, including the CARIFTA Games, CAC Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games along with the Olympics, Wilson said the transition was an easy one for him.
"I've been in the sport for such a long time and I've gained alot of connections and I've learned a lot already," said Wilson, who left competing as an athlete with a personal best achievement of 7-feet, 7 3/4inches or 2.33 metres as a high jumper.
"I've been learning from the start, but right now I can apply everything that I've learned during all these years. Being a
professional athlete was rewarding, but it gets obsolete after a while because it's just you and yourself up there.
"But in coaching, you have the ability to apply your experience with multiple athletes, so it's more gratifying as opposed to it being so selfish as an athlete.
“It's self discipline. It's a great journey, but I am just getting started."
He noted that he has enjoyed his stint at Clayton State, but he's looking forward to another surge in his coaching career at Life University. But he's eager to see what the future holds.
Note: Demeritte said he's also been pleased with the performance of his daughter Saga.
She is a high school senior - who is expected to come home to compete in The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ trials for the CARIFTA Games that will be held over the Easter holiday weekend in Grenada. Demeritte, who revealed that his daughter is following in his footsteps as a 200m runner, has ran a PR of 23.6.
But he noted that she has the potential to run the 400m as well, something that he never did.

HEAD coach Clarence
“CJ” McKenzie said he was extremely pleased with his Ultimate Champion Sports Academy 12-and-under baseball team. Ultimate Sport returned from Umatilla, Florida, over the weekend where they repeated as the champions of the 12AA Central Florida Slugfest Tournament with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record.
"We were dominant in pool play on Saturday, winning 23-1 and 11-1 and had a very close game in the quarterfinals," McKenzie said.
"We were down 6-4 with two outs in the bottom of the last inning.
"The team was able to fight to win the quarter-final game to advance to the semis where we won 5-1 and then took the final 7-1. We really had some strong pitching throughout the whole tournament. We probably had the best pitching staff out there."
He credited Javari Edgecombe, Elisha Thompson and Davon Gibson for getting the job done on the mound in the championship game.

The other members of the team were Ayden Curry, Kamelo Bain, Andrew Seymour, TaKayl Butler, Jarrod Clarke Jr, Kyrie Campbell, Jamere Williams, Caleb Munroe and Kendrtick Oliver. McKenzie, who was assisted by Shawn Munroe Jr, Carl Nottage and Recorda McPhee, said they will now prepare the team for their next tournament March 28-29 at the USSSA Easton Hype Tour Super NIT Tournament at the Space Coast in Viera, Florida, where the top 20 12U teams in Florida will be participating. LEIYAH Bain's only regret is that her Killian High Cougars women's basketball team in Miami, Florida, didn't win the Dade County state championship title.
But Bain, one of the six products of Paradise Hoops, headed by Bahamian Cedericka Sweeting, who also serves as the head coach at Killian High, said she couldn't ask for a better season.
While the Cougars fell short of getting to the state championship, Bain was selected to participate in the inaugural Jordan Heir Series 2 3x3 Tournament that was held at the Dick's House of Sports at the Dadeland Mall in Miami, Florida, over the weekend.
Her team won and Bain was invited to watch the Unrivaled Basketball League where she met Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Napheesa Collier who, along with Breanna Stewart, are co-founders of the 3x3 league.
Bain, who posted a career high 50 points this season, is averaging 35.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.2 steals per game.
Bain was joined by Shamaraja Cummings on the women's basketball team.
The men's team features Donovan Samuels, Andrew Bethel, Derico Taylor and Mokaiden Sweeting.
"My team fought hard, but we just came up short at the end," Bain said.
"From last year to now, my
game has improved a lot.
My game has grown a lot. I became a lot more mature.
"Every goal that I set for myself, I was able to achieve it. Before the year started, the coach asked me to write it and everything I wrote was accomplished."
She noted that she discovered that "faith without works is dead" as she believes and trusted in her faith in God to get her to where she went this year.
"It was a great experience," said Bain about being invited to the Jordan 3x3 Tournament. "That really opened up my eyes. It just showed me that whatever I do is possible. It's right there in my hands. That could be my everyday lifestyle."
Playing alongside Bain, Cummings had a career high of 31 points and 20 rebounds. She averaged 18.1 point, 12.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 3.0 blocks per game.
The 5-9 forward said her brother, Dereck Cummings, encouraged her to explore Paradise Hoops in an effort to give herself a better chance to play high school and collegiate basketball. Considering herself to be a "greater defender, who loves to hustle and rebound the ball," Cummings said she did everything possible to help Killian High win.
"I played hard and it showed up on the court," said Cummings, who came out of HO Nash Junior High under coach Patricia 'Pattie' Johnson's girls’ programme.
"So far it has been great," Cummings said. "Playing for coach Sweeting and with Leiyah has really helped

my game to improve. It was also very good to see Leiyah achieved what she did this year. I was very glad to be her team-mate."
Together, they helped the Cougars to finish the season with a 13-3 win-loss record.
As for the boys, who made it to regionals with a 12-6 record, Sweeting said she's tried to provide a family atmosphere like they have for the girls and that has made the difference.
"Coaching boys and girls is the same," Sweeting said. "I coach my boys the same way I coach my girls. Our practices are the same. So to see them transition from Nassau to here has been

pretty smooth because of their preparation during the off-season."
Samuels, 17, had a career high 36 points and 17 rebounds, averaging 27.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1,5 assists and one block per game.
"I left to come here to get a better education and to play sports," said Samuels, who previously attended CC Sweeting. "It's been a fun ride so far. I met a lot of new people and I am currently achieving a lot of things that I wanted to achieve."
He noted that he had a good basketball season, although they would have
liked to go to the state championship.
"I could have done a bit better," he said. "But I've learned that it's a lot faster playing over here than at home. The height of the guys over here are bigger. I had to work on my dribbling skills and get in better shape."
He added that Sweeting and the other players make him feel right at home.
Bethel, a 18-yearold former student of Teleos, had a career high of 34 points and is averaging 18.6 points, 2.4 assists, 6.4 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. "It's been a good experience for
me so far," Bethel said. "I expected better opportunities for myself. But the pace they play here is a lot faster than in Nassau. I just have to work on my shooting and prepare for college."
Taylor, a 17-year-old who previously attended DW Davis where he played for coach Mark Hanna, had a career high of 15 points with an average of 18.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 3.0 blocks per game.
"The transition was good. I got the opportunity through my uncle," said Taylor, the son of Samantha Gibson. "I felt I did well so far with basketball. I was also a running back and defence in football and I will run the sprints in track.
"But I love basketball and once I treat my body right, I can go on and play college ball. Coach Sweeting has really helped me a lot to get better."
Sweeting, the youngest of the boys at age 16 and a ninth grader at Killian High, said coming from Andros to be coached by coach Sweeting has been a blessing so far.
"I want to get a better opportunity to play basketball," said Sweeting, the cousin of coach Sweeting and the son of Monell Sweeting. "It's a real feeling playing with these guys. It's like a family because we have made sure we are still closely connected with each other."
With their season over, coach Sweeting said the players will now start training for the AAU Tournament that starts next month and the track season that is next for Killian High.

ATLANTA (AP) — Jonathan Kuminga made his debut for the Atlanta Hawks last night.
The Hawks acquired the high-flying forward and Bahamian guard Chavano “Buddy” Hield in a trade that sent centre Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline.
Kuminga checked in off the bench near the midway point of the first quarter and made an immediate impact against the woeful Washington Wizards.
He had a big grin after dunking off a fast break, and gave a tantalising glimpse of his wide-ranging talents with a 3-pointer, four assists, two rebounds and a steal during his first stint on the court. Kuminga missed his first six games with the Hawks, sandwiched around the AllStar break. He was recovering from a left knee bone bruise sustained in his closing weeks with the Warriors. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Kuminga fell out of the playing rotation in Golden State and expressed a desire to be traded when his playing time dwindled. At first, the Warriors indicated there weren't a lot of
teams showing interest in Kuminga. But the Hawks stepped forward as a trading partner, parting ways with Porzingis after he played just 17 games during his only season in Atlanta because of injuries and illness.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr discounted any issues with Kuminga, even though the 23-year-old from the Democratic Republic of the Congo played in just seven of his last 38 games with Golden State.
He started the season as a starter, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during his limited time on the court.

MADRID (AP) — There won't be another confrontation between Vinícius Júnior and Gianluca Prestianni in the Champions League this week.
Real Madrid and Benfica will meet at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium today but UEFA banished Prestianni from the game on Monday following accusations he racially abused Vinícius in the first leg of the knockout round last week.
Madrid won 1-0 in Lisbon after Vinícius scored in the second half. But when the Brazil forward celebrated by the Benfica corner flag and upset the local fans and players, the game was halted for nearly 10 minutes.
Prestianni confronted Vinícius, who accused the Argentine of calling him “monkey.” Prestianni denied racially insulting Vinícius.
The anti-racism protocol was activated but no further action was taken during the match as there was no evidence against Prestianni, who covered his mouth with his shirt while talking to Vinícius. The Madrid forward was shown a yellow card after his celebration.
UEFA said the onematch suspension of Prestianni from its control,

Prestianni did not play in Benfica’s 3-0 win over AVS on Saturday in the Portuguese league because of a yellow card suspension, but he was expected to be on the field along with Vinícius during Wednesday's match at the Bernabeu.
Vinícius scored Madrid's goal in a 2-1 loss at Osasuna on Saturday in La Liga.
Mourinho out
Missing for Benfica today will be coach José Mourinho, who was sent off late in the first leg for complaining to the referee. The former Madrid coach criticised Vinícius for celebrating his goal by the Benfica flag.
Benfica said Mourinho was not going to attend the pre-game news conference yesterday, with his assistant taking over.
Mourinho said Saturday it was a “tough week” for everyone at Benfica. He declined to comment when asked if he regretted his criticism of Vinícius.
Juve's crisis Another Italian club which will need a comeback will be Juventus when it hosts Galatasaray today after losing 5-2 in the first leg in Turkey.
Juventus has been struggling, though, and is coming off a 2-0 home loss to Como in Serie A that hurt its hopes of Champions League qualification next season. It was Juventus’ third straight defeat across all competitions and its fifth game in a row without a win.
Focused PSG
Defending European champion Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco won in Ligue 1 this weekend ahead of their second leg in Paris
today. Monaco's 3-2 victory over Lens allowed PSG to regain the league lead after beating Metz 3-0.
In the Champions League, PSG came from two goals down against Monaco to win the first leg 3-2.
Désiré Doue, who scored twice against Monaco, also found the net in the win against Metz.
Atletico Madrid rebounds
Atletico squandered a two-goal lead and conceded late in a 3-3 draw in its first leg at Club Brugge.Diego Simeone's team rebounded ahead of yesterday's return match by defeating Espanyol 4-2 in La Liga on Saturday.
Ademola Lookman scored again, earning his fourth goal in six matches since being signed by Atletico.

IT has been a tough start to the calendar year for the University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s soccer team but they were able to topple Future Stars FC 5-0 in Bahamas Men’s Soccer League (BMSL) action at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields on Sunday. It was the first win for UB in the BMSL after starting the calendar year with three draws.
This match saw them spreading the goals around as there were five different players finding the back of the net.
Scoring for Mingoes were Clerjivensky Clerjuste, Nahum Johnson, captain Ronaldo Green, Mider Dalmasse and Philip Pilgrim. Green said he was happy with his team’s resilience after they went down to 10 men just before the half.
"We managed the game well after going down a man and was able to score two or three more goals," Green said. "We kept a clean sheet and the guys coach brought in to do the job, got the job done. We need to keep the consistency." It was a strong start for UB as they dictated the match with their quickness and speed. Green scored in the 21st minute only to have
the goal waved off after the referee and his assistant referee had a conference and ruled offside. Three minutes later, Johnson assisted Clerjuste who quickly shot the ball from outside the 18-yard box before putting the ball into the back of the net.
Clerjuste returned the favour in the 32nd minute when he passed the ball to Johnson who tapped it
passed the goalkeeper to put UB up 2-0. Green, who scored eight goals in four matches, got on the scoresheet in the 34th minute on a tap in after Clerjuste’s shot was blocked. UB led 3-0 at the half.
