Velma Hanna was born 5th February, 1937 in New Bight, Cat Island to the late David and Emily Johnson. She was the eight of thirteen children. In 1957 Velma relocated to the United States, where she settled in Delray Beach, Florida and made it her home. On 4th February, 2021 Velma Johnson-Hanna entered her eternal resting place. ICTURE this: A smooth expanse of sand on a desolate seashore. BY AYANNA Nothing but gentle CLARKE surf for miles. When out of the line of trees walks a lone fiveyear old figure – an interloper in this serene scene, an interrupter of this divine peace…with a stick, a pole or shovel in his hand, ready to build his sand castle. He sits just near enough to the water to keep his parents at peace, then takes his digging implement and jams it into the sand. Damp grain is torn from damp grain, a huge gouge rips the beach open as he draws the line to mark where his sand castle will go. Not only does he tear through the shifting terrain, but he digs into the salty ground, piling it in one place, smashing and compacting it in another. And water springs like tears of pain as he begins. If the sand could say one thing, I believe it would say, “Ouch!” No shifting, birthing, or metamorphosis of any kind takes place without its share of discomfort or pain. We can’t say that we are drawing a line between who we used to be and who we are becoming without ruffling a few feathers, tearing ourselves away from a few habits or closing ourselves off from the excuses and opportunities for progress and change 3. Both you and those who know you will wonder many days about the efficacy and necessity of this change. You’ll ask yourself if it is worth it, if you’re doing
the right thing, is the personal cost too high to pay? But our builder on the beach doesn’t focus on the pain to the sand, or on his own exertion. In his mind he sees the finished product, a work of art, his masterpiece. Paul, too, admonishes, don’t consider attaining, or the work thereof, just continue to press toward that mark, stay focused on the prize. Our line in the sand has set a limit for us. We are not going back to what used to be, instead we are moving ahead, toward what we know is better, more profitable, more suitable for us. Despite the heat of the pressing, the risk and the work of a changed perspective comes with its own reward. God bless you this week!

To this end, the Council recently held its first prayer meeting of the year. According to Marvin RZ Gibson, NNWC president, the Council gives strength to the community and provides a platform for everyone who is invested in the community, regardless of any differences or distinctions. He believes COVID-19 has changed everything, including the way people now look at life, and how they interact with each other. “The Deep Creek community united in prayer is a demonstration of our reliance

on faith over relishing in fear. The Deep Creek NNWC is driven by our faith in God and the power of prayer. Scripture Some biblical passages on healthy lifestyles are: • Mark 12:30-31 NRSV: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.” • 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” • 1 Corinthians 3:17: “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” • Romans 12:1-2: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. • Proverbs 17:22: “A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.” 5. Personal reflection: Seek to engage in spiritual discipline aimed at pleasing God and blessing our families: • How do I feel about my current lifestyle? • How do I feel about the time and energy needed to promote a healthy lifestyle? • How does my current lifestyle impact my family? • Do I want the lifestyle of my child/ children to be just like mine? • What do I need to change and how soon am I willing to make those changes? As the Church, we are in an ideal position to assist with the process of change, by providing the following: more opportunities for prayer, meditation and study, the sharing of personal experiences of healthy lifestyles, and more pre-marital, marriage and family counselling. We can offer virtual (face to face eventually) seminars on nutrition, exercise, water consumption, rest and sleep, relaxation and leisure time, finances, and preparation for retirement. When the country re-opens, we can encourage visits to gymnasiums, retreat and wellness centres, creating support groups for those suffering from obesity, drug and alcohol addiction and other disorders or health challenges, and even sponsoring rehabilitation centres, healing centres, fitness centres, and wellness centres on church property. AST Sunday, congregations across the Bahamas heard messages of love from the church pulpit, as pastors, deacons, priests and other speakers used Valentine’s Day to encourage people to grow in their love for and be intentional about demonstrating their love of God to all they encounter, in spite of their potential differences. The message was no different at the Ebenezer Union Baptist Church in Farmer’s Hill, Exuma, which held a special service to not only uplift its members, but which sought to inspire them to love even greater. A spirit of love permeated the Exuma church last Sunday as congregants came to the service adorned in red, white, pink or black to exhibit their recognition of the day of love. Young Kamika Milford offered a heartwarming rendition of Whitney Houstons’s “The Greatest Love of All” and the dance team put on a performance of the song “No Greater Love”. Rev Stephen Smith, pastor of the church, gave the keynote address on “The Manifestation of the Love of God”, derived from 1 John 4:19 – “We love Him because He first loved us.” Rev Smith believes his message could not come at a better time than this, when there is much division and strife in the body of Christ. In his sermon, Rev Smith shared that one of the first things mankind was given was the gift of love. “For God so loved His only begotten son that he gave His life so that all may have eternal life,” he said. Rev Smith spoke shared about the various forms of love, including storge love, which refers to the love of parents for their children; philia, which is the love of friends, and eros, which is the passionate and sexual love. He said: “Eros love expresses itself to the fullest and can be a double-edged sword. “Eros is a love of desire, and if not carried out as God ordained and sanctioned, sex can lead to many regrets because it involves the body, mind, soul and spirit. Young men, young women, keep yourself until you get married.” Rev Smith encouraged all in

Also in attendance were Rev Hueter and Sister Prescola Rolle, of the Salem Union Baptist Church. Rev Rolle recognised his wife Prescola of 36 years and acknowledged her support in his life and the ministry. “We have been through a lot in the last 12 months as a nation and in the world,” said Rev Rolle. He spoke of chronos and kairos, the ancient Greek words for time. He said are times and seasons people must go through in order to reproduce. Rev Rolle reminded the congregants to remain still and know that God cares and loves them always. Further presentations on the topic of love were made during the service to the
