Funeral Service for Sir Godfrey Kenneth Kelly, K.C.M.G., C.M.G., D.M prominent Attorney, died at 10.30am on 10th February, 2022 peacefully at home. He was 93 years old. Sir Godfrey was born in Nassau, Bahamas on 21st December, 1928 to Charles Kenneth Kelly and Edna Frances Kelly née Moore. After completing his early education at Queen’s College in Nassau he attended McDonogh School in Baltimore from 1945 to 1947. He then became an articled law student in the Chambers of Sir Kenneth Solomon for a year before leaving for England in 1948 to read law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University and the Middle Temple in London. He received a B.A. degree in law in 1951 and his LL.B. in 1952 and was called to both the English and Bahamas bars in 1953. He received his M.A. in 1957 and his LL.B. degree was re-designated LL.M in 1989. After completing his studies he returned to Nassau and re-joined Sir Kenneth Solomon’s law firm which was established by him in 1905. Sir Godfrey retired from practice in 2019 after practising for 66 years. Sir Godfrey participated actively in the affairs of The Bahamas Bar Association serving as Secretary (1954-1960), Vice-President (1983-1984) and Registrar of Examinations (1986-1988) and as a Lecturer to articled law students and an examiner for 11 years. He was Legal Adviser to the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce from 19541960. He was active in politics for 16 years and was first elected to represent the Cat Island constituency in the House of Assembly in 1956 and won reelection in 1962 and 1967 and served until 1968. He was a delegate to The Bahamas Constitutional Talks in London in May of 1963. When ministerial government was introduced on 7th January, 1964, Sir Godfrey was appointed Minister of Education after serving as a Member of the Board of Education for 7 years prior. He remained Minister until January 1967. He was appointed to the Senate in 1968 where he again served the people of The Bahamas as Leader of the Opposition until 1972 when he retired from active politics. Sir Godfrey was a keen sportsman, enjoyed tennis, skiing, shooting fishing and boating. He was particularly proficient in sailing and represented The Bahamas in Yachting events as a Dragon Class skipper in the Olympic Games of 1960 (Rome), 1964 (Tokyo), 1968 (Mexico) and 1972 (Munich) and in the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1962 in Jamaica where he won a Gold Medal. In 2011 he was inducted into the Sports
Hall of Fame. He and the late Sir Harold Christie were the founders of the Cat Island Regatta an annual event since 1956. Sir Godfrey was the Senior Honourary President of Star of The Bahamas Charity Guide No. 35 and was the recipient in 1986 of the Start of The Bahamas Scroll of Honour. On 10th July, 1998 in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of an independent Bahamas the Government presented Mr. Kelly with a Silver Jubilee Award for his contribution to Law. In the 2019 National Honours he was made a Member of the Order of Distinction. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours of June 1999, Her Majesty appointed Sir Godfrey a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George in recognition of his contributions to the growth and development of The Bahamas. In the New Year’s Honours of 2020, he was appointed Knight Commander. Sir Godfrey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sonia Lady Kelly, one granddaughter, Katherine Anne Elza, who is also an attorney, his sisters-in -law, Lady Winifred Anne Johnstone and Nancy B. Kelly, M.B.E., numerous nieces and nephews including Steven Kenneth Kelly (Susan), Lynn Marion Lowe (Christopher), Andrew Jordan Kelly (Sylvia), David Gregory Booth Kelly (Shelle), Candace Kelly, cousins George Kelly, M.B.E. (Norma) and lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his two children, Godfrey Ian Kelly and Linda Anne Elza, his two brothers, David Albert Charles Kelly, C.B.E. and Basil Trevor Kelly, C.B.E., his sister-in-law, Joan Paula Kelly and his nephews, Gary Herbert Kelly and Reginald Scott Kelly. Glory Carriers celebrate successful food drive at Potter’s Cay Dock By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net MEMBERS of the Glory Carriers Street Ministries are giving all praise to God, as they celebrate the huge success of the organisation's most recent food drive held at Potter’s Cay Dock this past Saturday. “All honour is given to God. The response of our excited volunteers who were on location just before 7am and the response of those persons who had already gathered at the location was just the tip of the iceberg of success. Just a year ago the programme began on Potter’s Cay Dock, and the overwhelming turnout was unimaginable. It was a great anniversary gift to our volunteers,” said Stacy Petty-Rodgers, the team’s founder and chairperson. Stacy and her newly formed Glory Carriers group hosted their very first feeding initiative at the ministry’s Kemp Road parking lot last February. The team did not only physically feed the people, but rather spiritually and mentally. So far, the food drives have offered mainly breakfast options, but she is looking to expand in the next coming months to lunch options. At last Saturday’s event, people were given healthy snacks, clothing and disposable face masks. The menu included steamed tuna, steamed sausage, yellow grits, white grits and corned beef.

Love is… VALENTINE'S Day has come and gone now. Love may be described as: AMAZING: For those in the height of love and managing their relationship well, this is a wonderful time of the year. Whether they had money to spend or not, they found being together so very special. DEVASTATING: For others this is the worst week ever. It might have been because this week brought a breakup. For some reason, this is often the season when things fall apart. DEPRESSING: Perhaps, it was a question of being totally ignored, with no cards, gifts, flowers, special meals or any gesture of love for the one who had longed to have the experiencethis time around. Just another day in the calendar that came and went with no token of affection or appreciation. DISAPPOINTING: It could very well be that this is yet another year without a touch of romance. Both men and women may want to be married and to have a family, to spend the rest of their lives with a companion who truly cares. This dream may be receding as the years go by. FUN: Somewhere in the middle are those who made the day memorable, wearing something red, decorating their home, office or cubicle, and spending time with good friends if there was no romantic relationship to celebrate. It is a time to spread love and receive love. LIFELONG: Love should begin in the home to create security and trust. This, hopefully, will be continued in the school years with confidence increasing until adulthood allows for mature love to evolve. Friendships are some of the most lasting of relationships, possibly longer than marriages, with the sad news of increasing numbers of divorces. Add to this the love of collegial circles and that of extended family members which should be

cycles of love that pass on from generation to generation, although for some, family is an experience of nightmare. UNCONDITIONAL: God is love and this is where the best example is to be found. Look at the cross to see the height of love, the depth of love, the breadth of love. There are really no words to capture how much God loves us. I pray that when you feel unloved, unwanted, under-celebrated, forgotten, forsaken or any other negative emotion, I pray that you will remember that God has promised never to leave us or forsake us, and never to allow anything or anyone to separate us from this everlasting love. We are all so blessed to have such a creator, a redeemer and sanctifier in the persons of God – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – as three persons in one. We sang songs and motorists slowed down to sing along with us. There were fishermen, who because of the weather, were not able to travel out to sea, who asked us to pray for them. Persons asked us to pray for them as
they are battling drug and alcohol addictions. We were able to share phone numbers for prayer support,” said Stacy. The Glory Carriers have visited several locations over the last 12 months, and Stacy said the team is learning that people appreciate the support, the food, the clothing, and especially the prayers they have to offer. “We shall be hosting more programmes during the year and we have seen our food assistance grow from 150 plates to 250 - 300 plates. We are praying that we will be blessed with a vehicle and a building to expand the food assistance, and to also offer shortterm shelter for persons in need,” she said.

ith the cries for help from people in marriages and relationships in the Bahamas becoming too loud to ignore, the Bahamas Christian Fellowship organisation decided it needed to offer both couples and singles guidance to navigate through challenging times. All through the month of February the ministry has been hosting the “Decoding Love” series. It continues this Sunday at 9.30am and Tuesday at 7pm at Bahamas Christian Fellowship Centre on Carmichael Road. “The ‘Decoding Love’ series goal is to strengthen relationships, assist people to choose the right partner, and help those who are wounded to recover,” said Apostle Paul Butler of his ministry’s efforts. The event features teachings on Sundays that are relevant in addressing the challenges people are facing in relationships. In addition, Tuesdays feature various panel discussions with single men, single women, married couples, those who are divorced and those who are widowed. There is also an open session for questions and answers from the audience. According to Apostle Butler, the ministry felt the need to offer support to couples.
“For some time, we have been witnessing a dramatic increase in marital conflicts, separations and divorces. This is based on the demands for counselling sessions throughout the community. These relational problems have been occurring in and outside of the church. The pandemic has also exacerbated relational troubles,” he said. “Secondly, our singles are struggling in their romantic relationships because they lack
guidance and knowledge. We find that many single people are in relationships for different reasons. For example, some are in relationship only for sexual expression with no desire for marriage. As a result, many end up with a broken heart and deep emotional scars. It was clear to me that there was a need for insightful teachings to help those crying out for answers,” he told Tribune Religion.
So far, the series has addressed the dynamics of true love and topics like lust, infatuation, and mere attraction versus love. “We discussed the three types of people who desire romantic relationship; the importance of romantic competence, and choosing the right partner for marriage,” said Apostle Butler. “We will be addressing the purposes for marriage, keys to a healthy union, and how to resolve conflicts. In addition, the
final session will deal with hurts, wounds and emotional trauma for inner healing.” Apostle Butler said he can already see the impact the series is having on people. He believes they’ve provided singles with a clearer understanding what true love is, and what they should look for when choosing a suitable mate. He feels they’ve also given participants the tools they need for the personal preparation that is required to be a healthy partner for another person. While there much information to be found out there when it comes matters of the heart, Apostle Butler said Christian advice and guidance has been missing. The church, he said, must lead the conversation in offering the Christian perspective. “It is important for the church not only to join the conversation, but to lay out the principles and values that create true love; healthy dating habits to bring about more lasting and fulfilled marriages,” he said. “Today’s culture is promoting new ideas and changing the traditional values that have produced healthy relationships and marriages in the past. The Bible is the core guide for good relationships and to maintain family life in society. Without adhering to biblical principles and values, society will continue to disintegrate because of failed relationships.”
JAPAN’S SHINTO RELIGION IS GOING GLOBAL AND ATTRACTING ONLINE FOLLOWERS By KAITLYN UGORETZ University of California Santa Barbara (THE CONVERSATION) American Kit Cox, 35, works as an electrical engineer and enjoys biking and playing piano. But what some might consider surprising about Cox, who was raised as Methodist, is that she practices the Japanese religion known as Shinto. While Cox’s interest in Shinto was originally sparked by her love for Japanese popular culture and media, Shinto practice is not just a phase or fad for her. For over 15 years, she has venerated Inari Ookami, a Shinto deity or “kami” connected to agriculture, industry, prosperity and success. After several years of study, Cox received a great honor from Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of Japan’s most popular Shinto shrines. She was entrusted with a “wakemitama,” a physical portion of Inari Ookami’s spirit, which is now housed in a sacred box and enshrined in her home altar. What’s more, Cox has emerged as a leader within a relatively small but growing community of Shinto practitioners scattered around the world. Her goal: to help Japan’s “indigenous” religion go global. As an anthropologist of Japanese religion studying the spread of Shinto around the world, I met Cox where most non-Japanese people interested in Shinto do – online. Over several years of studying social media posts, participating in livestreams and conducting surveys and interviews, I’ve heard many people’s stories of what draws them to practice Shinto and how they navigate the difficulties of doing so outside of Japan. What is Shinto? Shinto has many faces. For some, it is a reservoir of local community traditions and a way of ritually marking milestones throughout the year and in one’s life. For others, it is an institution that attests to the Japanese emperor’s divine
status as a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu or a life-affirming nature religion. But at its core, Shinto is about the ritual veneration of kami. These myriad deities can take different forms. Many are associated with features of the natural world, like lightning and the sun, while others look after human concerns, from marital relationships to acing one’s college exams. One of Shinto’s primary concerns is the management of spiritual impurities through ritual purification. According to Shinto thought, impurities accumulate simply as a product of living in this world, as well as through contact with sources of impurity, such as death or disease, and committing inappropriate acts. Because spiritual impurities offend the kami and are capable of threatening social order and people’s well-being, Shinto priests must purify them regularly through ritual. Besides purification, Shinto also provides what contemporary Japanese religion experts Ian Reader and George Tanabe, Jr call “practical benefits.” These innumerable benefits include good health, prosperity and safety. At Shinto shrines and in other sacred spaces, both priests and regular folks from all walks of life perform rituals to express gratitude for the deities’ protection and pray for their continued blessings. Why do people choose Shinto? While Shinto is often characterised as the “indigenous” religion of Japan, it is not limited by geography, nationality or ethnicity. Non-Japanese people have received certification as Shinto priests, and Shinto shrines can be found around the world, including in the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands and the Republic of San Marino. Global practitioners stress that, unlike many organized religions, Shinto has “no founder, doctrine,
games, martial arts or tourism. Some Shinto priests even use popular culture as a teaching tool, performing rituals and giving lectures at cultural events and fan conventions.
SOME Shinto priests are very active on social media. or sacred texts.” The majority identify as “spiritual but not religious,” a growing category of people who define spirituality as “personal, heart-felt, and authentic,” as opposed to the hierarchy and dogma of institutional religion. For people of Japanese descent, Shinto rituals often provide a way of maintaining relationships with ancestors and a connection with their cultural heritage. As I found during my field research, non-Japanese practitioners find Shinto particularly appealing for a number of reasons. First, Shinto reflects their values: a positive perspective on life, a focus on gratitude and harmony, care
for the environment and compatibility with other traditions. Members find the community welcoming to people of diverse gender identities, sexual orientations and abilities. Second, they appreciate Shinto’s focus on ritual. Cox jokes that if she were to be a Christian, she would probably be a Catholic for the rituals. Shinto practitioners describe rituals as an opportunity to reflect, reconnect with the divine and renew or refresh their own spirit. Third, Shinto provides a way to engage more deeply with Japanese culture. Many practitioners first encountered Shinto through anime, video
What does the online Shinto community look like? Much to my surprise when I began my digital research, I found that online Shinto communities have existed since the birth of the internet as we know it today. In 2000, the “Shinto Mailing List” was created on Yahoo Groups (now defunct) as a space for over 1,000 people to discuss Shinto with like-minded individuals. Fast-forward 20 years, and Shinto communities include some six to 10,000 members hosted across several Facebook groups, other social media platforms and even virtual worlds. As my research shows, Shinto priests and lay practitioners use social media to talk about their experiences and ask questions. The most frequently posed questions by new members are “Is it okay to practice Shinto as a non-Japanese person?” and “How exactly do we practice Shinto outside Japan?” They also create and share resources, such as guides for ritual practice at home, recommended books and other media, and instructions on how to contact and support Shinto shrines. While internet-based religion is considered taboo by the majority of Shinto shrines in Japan, some overseas shrines, such as Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America and Shinto Shrine of Shusse Inari in America, have created their own vibrant online shrine communities. They share news on upcoming events and livestream monthly and yearly rituals and festivals. They both have active social media presences, and Shinto Shrine of Shusse Inari in America is even exploring alternative forms of fundraising via crowdfunding sites like Patreon.
A day in the life Since most practitioners outside of Japan do not live near a Shinto shrine, their everyday ritual practice focuses on venerating the Shinto deities in their home at an altar called a kamidana or “kami shelf.” In the morning, Cox greets Inari Ookami with a series of deep bows and claps. She recites prayers called “norito” and puts out traditional offerings of rice, water and salt in gratitude for the kami’s blessings. In the evening, she removes the offerings and consumes them. This practice is meant to bring humans and divinities closer together by sharing the same meal. It’s also a great way to avoid wasting food. Some offerings can be hard to come by outside Japan. In these cases, Shinto practitioners may offer similar, local substitutes, such as oats instead of rice. They may also make creative additions to their altars, personalizing the space and their relationship with the kami. Others have difficulty sourcing the materials required to set up a Shinto altar, especially the sacred “ofuda” talisman, which must be received from a shrine. They may build their own altars or pay their respects at a digital altar in an app. What’s most important, according to Cox, is respect for tradition and the sincerity of one’s intentions and actions.
