JIU-JITSU ACADEMY TO HOST FIVE-TIME SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT ‘CYBORG’ By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net AFTER introducing the sport to the Bahamas in November, the Jiu-Jitsu Academy will get a big boost this weekend when they host five-time Super Heavyweight world champion Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu. He is an ADCC Absolute champion, four-time No-Go world champion, Pan American champion and Brazilian national champion. He went to the United States with nothing in his pockets and nowhere to live. Today, Abreu is regarded as one of the most highly regarded athletes in the sport and one of the most inspirational people

Royals, Lions take early leads in best-of-3 finals erennial title contenders in both Government Secondary School Sports Association junior divisions began their bids to repeat as champions. Both the DW Davis Royals and HO Nash Lions took early series leads as the best-of-three finals tipped off yesterday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. In game one of the Junior Boys series, the top seeded Royals scored a 49-40 win over the CH Reeves Raptors. A balanced scoring attack featured four Royals players in double figures, highlighted by 16 points from Deangelo Foulkes. In his high scoring supporting cast, Kenvon Farrington added 12, George Colebrooke had 10 and Aaron Brown had nine. Marley Major scored nine, while Jaydon Farrington had seven for the Raptors. It was a hard fought game throughout the opening phases of the first, Farrington’s second three pointer of the game gave the Raptors an 11-9 lead with just under one minute left to play in the quarter. Farrington tied it at 11 from the line in a first quarter that had three ties and four lead changes. The teams took a 13 all tie into the second. The Royals opened the second with a Farrington dish to Brown for an alleyoop and he successfully converted the three-point play. After a Raptors run gave them a brief lead, the Royals half court trap resulted in a 6-0 run to take a 23-19 advantage. The size of the Colebrooke, Brown and Foulkes frontline began dominating the boards defensively but could not take advantage on offence, missing several second and third shot opportunities. The Royals still took a 25-19 lead into the half when Farrington split a pair from the line with time expired. CH Reeves opened the third with six unanswered points, capped by a fast break layup from Major for a 26-25 lead. The teams

We welcome anyone who is interested to come out.” Abreu will conduct from 11am to 1pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Jiu-Jitsu Academy’s facility in the Pineapple Business Park and the AIP is $100.00 per person. started in November, Giacomotti said they have attracted more than 75 signed up members and with Abreu in town, they anticipate that the numbers will increase. “We haven’t done any marketing for the academy as yet,” he said. “We will be doing that after the opening. But we are very pleased with the response we have received so far with this new sports in the Bahamas.” At present, training sessions are held daily from 6-7am for beginners. Women’s Open BJJ are held on Wednesdaya and Friday from 9:30-10:30 am and there’s an afterschool programme from 4-6 pm. The intro to BJJ goes from 6:30-7:30pm. The academy, however, is open until 9pm.

31ST ‘CATCH ME IF YOU CAN’ REGATTA IN MONTAGU BAY THIS WEEKEND By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE stage is set for the biggest local regatta to take place on New Providence as the 31st Catch Me If You Can St Valentine’s Day Massacre is staged in Montagu Bay this weekend. “I thank God for allowing me to see another year, 2018, to host the St Valentine’s Day Regatta again,” said Eleazor ‘the Sailing Barber’ Johnson as he prepares for the sloop sailing extravaganza. “I started it in 1987 and I come this far without any interruption. I thank God that I’ve never had to put the regatta off because of bad weather or the lack of funding.” Johnson, the owner of the B Class Lady in Red, Lady Nathalie boat, also expressed his gratitude to all those persons who would have assisted him from the first year to now. “I was sailing from I was a boy, not for money, because of the competition. I just wanted to beat you,” Johnson said. “That is in my blood and that will continue until I die. I was there when we didn’t have any motors in the boats to sail. That is how we started competing. “But I hope that someone else will take a stand and put on more regattas like this because it is needed to make sailing much better. I don’t want to see anybody fussing, rowing or arguing over regattas.” Johnson said while he’s doing his path by putting on the regatta in New Providence, he would like to see more money pumped into the regattas staged around the Family Islands with every major island putting on a regatta for the public to enjoy. Starting on Saturday and completing on Sunday, Johnson said the regatta will take place in Montagu with competition being staged in the A Class. He noted that there are at least 6-7 boats expected to compete in a series of races on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Johnson said his Lady in Natalie will get his customary head start on an 8-10 mile course ahead of the A Class boats and they will have a chance to catch his boat, which is expected to be skippered by Clyde Rolle. Among the boats scheduled to participate in the regatta are the Red Stripe, Southern Cross, Ed Sky, Good News and the Running Tide. Johnson thanked Burns House and Campari, Coca-Cola, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, Asa H Pritchard and d’Albenas Agency for their support in the past and even this year. UB Mingoes set for first judo competition By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE University of the Bahamas will continue to spread the wings of its Mingoes’ Athletic Department on the collegiate scene in the United States this weekend when a five-member team will travel to Texas to compete in their first judo competition. The team, coached by D’Arcy Rahming Jr, is comprised of captain Kentico Forbes, a senior accounting major who is a black

belt, vice-captain is Desmondo Bootle, an engineering major who is also a black belt, Artio McPhee, a freshman who competes as a brown belt, Taryn Butler, a female bronze belt in her junior year and Raven Pennerman, a female blue belt in her sophomore year. “I expect my black belts of course to win,” Rahming Jr said. “Hopefully for my brown belts, I would like to see them win their black belts, but in order for them to do that, they have to beat an American black belt. “And my blue belt is there for a reason.

She’s the dark horse. She could win the whole thing or she could not. We see a lot of potential in her. That is why she is on this team.” Rahming Jr said he’s delighted to head the UB’s judo varsity sport with the five members as they make their maiden voyage to represent the Mingoes. “All of the competitors have represented the country before so these are not super green people,” pointed out Rahming Jr, a member of the Bahamas Judo Federation, the governing body

for the sport in the country. “But being student-athletes have their own challenges and getting used to the vigorous academy and strenuous training programme is something they are adjusting to. This is what we hope for in all of our athletes.” During the tournament on Sunday, the Mingoes will be matched against athletes from Texas A & U and other universities and colleges invited to participate. The team will leave Saturday and should arrive just in time

for the weigh-in that night. Once they have completed competition on Sunday, they are scheduled to return home on Monday. The judo team is following on the heels of the Mingoes’ basketball, track and field and soccer teams that have already represented the Mingoes with impressive showings so far during the academic year. So far, the Athletic Department, headed by Kimberley Rolle, has enjoyed a great level of success and they are hoping that judo will continue the trend.

OPENING DAY CEREMONIES HELD FOR ELEUTHERA JUNIOR BASEBALL LEAGUE THE Eleuthera Junior Baseball League (EJBL) held its opening day ceremonies at the Rock Sound Primary School Baseball Park on Saturday. It was an exciting time in Rock Sound as teams from Rock Sound, Tarpum Bay and Palmetto Point were in attendance. The first game began at 11am and the Palmetto Point Legends (2017 defending champions in the 9-12 division) defeated the Tarpum Bay Mosquitoes 9-7 in a keenly contested game. At 1:30pm, the official opening ceremonies began with a

Relax Cowboy Nation! WITHOUT a doubt, Kellen Moore is one of those guys folks either really like or believe he’s overstayed his time in Dallas by a country mile. When this was in the wee stages of just a rumour circulating around social media, lots of folks voiced their displeasure with an underwhelming NFL quarterback now being in Prescott’s ear. Moore has no bigger fan than offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. When the Cowboys’ front office decided to keep the coordinators in place, that almost guaranteed a role for Moore. He’s a “Linehan Disciple.” Despite the naysayers, Moore’s fan club is broader and more diverse than just Scott Linehan.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott had this to say on the Newy Scruggs Show on NBC Sports Radio: “I’m a big fan of Kellen Moore. I pushed for that, and I know he helped me so much throughout the season, both seasons actually. He’s just so smart. I told him when he became a college coach and I had a kid, my son had no choice of who he was going to play for. I’m excited I get to play under him now, and I’m excited for him to take this role as a coach, and I know he’ll be really good at it.” Prescott also added: “The moment he became quarterbacks coach, we shared a message and I told him exactly the things I wanted him to push me and challenge me on, and I know he’s going to do that. TRADE = WIN, WIN FOR THE LAKERS Recently acquired PG Isaiah Thomas made his Laker debut Saturday night in Dallas against the Mavericks. Coming off the bench, it didn’t take Thomas long to score, he knocked down his first shot as a Laker - a

3-pointer midway through the first quarter. Thomas finished with 22 points and six assists. And he was efficient, hitting seven of his 12 field-goal attempts. “I wanted to bring something to the table,” Thomas said. “I felt like I got my powers back playing on this team.” “I was shocked, it was as a surprise, but at the same time, I am happy to have a new start, I am happy to be here with the Lakers, happy to be with a young team that is exciting, that likes to get up and down. That’s my style of play. I am here to help in any way possible. It’s a fresh start for me. I am excited.” That type of mindset from Thomas is a win for the Lakers, as well as knowing that it is important for

BFA: Cavalier FC gets win over Eagles FC THE Cavalier FC defeated the Eagles FC in an exciting match as the Bahamas Football Association continued its regular season in the Roscoe Davies Developmental Center at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Sunday. Behind a hat trick (three goals) from Shawn Simms, the Red Tide rolled over the Eagles. In game two on the day, the Ins Management Bears FC and the Renegades Football Club played a tight and physical game and on the day the outcome was a 2-2 draw. Bears got a goal from Kirby Dupreno while Renegades got a goal from M.Odaine.

18-Under boys (Friday Night) In game one on a starry night at the Roscoe Davies Stadium, the Dynamos Football Club boys rode a hat trick from Peter Julmis and another goal from Marcus Henry as they ran over the Future Stars boys 4-0. In game two on Friday, the Renegades Football Club out of Lyford Cay played to a 1-1 draw with their arch-rival Western Warriors. The Renegades got a goal from Larry Noel while McClean Goodfellow got one for the Warriors. 18-under girls (Saturday Afternoon) On Saturday afternoon under clear blue skies and a nice breeze, the Lady Dynamos took apart their arch rivals the Lady Cavalier FC 4-0. The Lady Cavaliers had no answer for the Dynamos attack led by Amos Ferguson who scored a brace (2 goals). Ferguson was assisted in the attack with goals from forward Mia Williams and

winger Tyra Mckenzie. The defence of the Lady Dynamos turned back the red tide led by Bernadette Nelson as they went on to win the match. In the second match of the day the up and coming and fast improving Lady Baha Juniors girls team played to a 1-1 draw with the veteran squad from Western Warriors. CLIPPERS PUT 7 IN DOUBLE FIGURES, BEAT NETS 114-101 By BRIAN MAHONEY Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Lou Williams scored 20 points, DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 17 rebounds, and they got plenty of help from a balanced Clippers lineup in a 114-101 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. Los Angeles put seven players in double figures and shot 56.5 percent from the field in its fourth win in five games, bouncing back nicely from a loss in Philadelphia. Austin Rivers scored 17 points, Danilo Gallinari had 16 and reserve Montrezl Harrell collected 15 points on 6-for-6 shooting. The Clippers made 19 of their first 26 shots and won for the 12th time in 17 games. D’Angelo Russell and Joe Harris each scored 16 for the Nets, who dropped

their sixth straight. The Clippers are still adjusting to a different team after trading Blake Griffin to Detroit, and coach Doc Rivers said the Clippers were being careful not to call too many plays, since the new players hadn’t had enough time to learn them. Whatever they did Monday worked just fine. The Clippers were 15 of 21 in the first quarter, building a 34-22 lead. They kept it up in the second, pushing the lead to 45-28 on consecutive layups by Harrell, who made all four shots in seven first-half minutes. Los Angeles led 66-51 at the break. They had 90 points after three quarters and when the Nets cut it to nine in the fourth, the Clippers scored six straight to take a comfortable lead again. SARIC SCORES 24 TO LEAD 76ERS PAST SLUMPING KNICKS By AARON BRACY Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Dario Saric scored 24 points to pace all five starters in double figures, and the Philadelphia 76ers won their fourth in a row, 108-92 over the slumping New York Knicks on Monday night. J.J. Redick had 18 points, Joel Embiid scored 17 and Robert Covington and Ben Simmons each chipped in 13 for the 76ers, who won their 10th straight at home to remain in playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia, which never trailed, began the night in eighth place in the East, two games clear of Detroit. Reserve T.J. McConnell had a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Michael Beasley scored 22 points to lead the Knicks, who lost their seventh straight. The Knicks were playing their third game without All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, who suffered a torn left ACL last Tuesday against Milwaukee. Courtney Lee had 18 points in his first game coming off the bench this season for the Knicks. Lee had started all 57 games this season, but coach Jeff Hornacek elected to go with 6-foot-8 Lance Thomas for defensive purposes to guard Simmons. The Knicks tied the game for the third and final time on Enes Kanter’s jumper with 3:57 left in the third quarter. Philadelphia took control from that point on. The 76ers ended the period by scoring 13 of the final 19 points to take an 86-79 lead into the fourth, and then tallied the first eight points of the final quarter. Amir Johnson made the first of two free throws with 8:34 left to put Philadelphia ahead 94-79. BELINELLI ON BOARD The 76ers signed veteran 3-point specialist Marco Belinelli. ANTHONY DAVIS-LED PELICANS GET 118-103 WIN OVER PISTONS By LARRY LAGE Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Anthony Davis had 38 points and 10 rebounds to help the New Orleans Pelicans beat Detroit last night in another one of his strong performances against the Pistons. Davis is averaging 30.4 points per game against the Pistons, his highest total against an NBA team. He scored a career-high 59 against them nearly two years ago. That’s one reason the Pelicans have won 11 of the last 12 games against the Pistons. Detroit attempted to defend Davis with Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin, but they were no match for Davis inside, off the dribble or on the outside. The All-Star was 14 of 24 from the field, including 3 for 6 on 3-pointers. Davis had 10 points in the second quarter, powering New Orleans to a 60-52 lead at halftime. Nikola Mirotic helped the Pelicans pull away in

the third quarter and finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds. New Orleans has won two straight for the first time since DeMarcus Cousins tore his left Achilles tendon. It is 3-5 without the All-Star center. The Pistons have lost three straight after winning five in a row, including four with Griffin. Griffin scored 22 on 8-of-17 shooting. Drummond had 13 points and 21 rebounds. The Raptors scored the opening basket of the fourth but the Royals would eventually open up a 10-point lead when Colebrooke’s layup made it 45-35 with just over 2:30 left to play in regulation. HO Nash Lions - 42 TA Thompson Scorpions - 38 If game one is any indication how the remainder of the series will play out, the Lions’ path to the title won’t be as easy as it has been in past years. It was a scorer’s duel between the Lions’ Sands who finished with 26 points and nine rebounds and the Scorpions’ Webster who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Lions took an 10-2 lead but the Scorpions went on a 6-0 run to end the first. They missed several opportunities to tie and Lions ended the quarter on a 5-0 run. They scored the first basket of the second but it would be their only field goal of the quarter as the Scorpions mounted a comeback. The Scorpions eventually came within two but the Lions led 18-16 at the half. TA Thompson took their first lead of the game early in the third, but back-toback scores from Sands gave the Lions 25-21 lead with 3:08 left in the third. She added another score on a fast break layup to finish her own 6-0 run. She scored eight in the quarter and the Lions clung to a 29-26 lead headed into the fourth. Tied at 29 on the follow, The Lions regained the advantage down the stretch and Sands’ late runner late gave the Lions the 40-37 lead for good. “We struggled defensively, I don’t know what happened out there early on,” Lions head coach Patty Johnson said. “We couldn’t get a stop, we couldn’t make a shot, but the girls were able to turn it around in the second half.”
