The day you left and gained your wings our heart just broke in two. We wish you could have stayed with us, but heaven needed you. You left us with the memories and WE LOVE YOU dearly still. No matter how much time goes by, you know we always will. You were a very special person, with kindness in your heart. And the love we had together, grows stronger now we’re apart. We know we cannot bring you back, although we wish it everyday. But a piece of us went with you, the day you went away.
From your loving children, Donnie, Renardo and Precious; granchildren; siblings, Zammie, Esther and Antoinette and other relatives and friends.

Anthony Livingston Hall
I remember Maureen most fondly as a precocious little girl at the piano. She took to it like a fish to water, and it quickly became clear she had something special. Indeed, it’s debatable whether Maureen took more pride in her growing mastery, or whether we did in watching her natural gift unfold.
That little member of our family band of ordinary musicians grew into an extraordinary woman.
Maureen was the youngest of eight sisters. But she is the fourth of our siblings to die in recent years. And there is a stark symmetry to the order of their passing that is hard to ignore, and harder still to accept.
First was my oldest brother, Christy, in January 2019. Then my youngest brother, Derek, in August 2019. Then my oldest sister, Margaret, in March 2020. Now my youngest sister, Maureen, in January 2026.
Just a few years ago, ours was a thriving family of eight boys and eight girls. Maureen is now survived by a fragile balance of six brothers and six sisters. I mean, if there’s some divine design afoot, it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out for whom the bell tolls next. But life throws so many curves that there seems little point in fearing any fateful symmetry.
Maureen was an accomplished doctor and educator. But none of us could ever think of her as anything other than our baby sister; you know, the one who came last, watched everything, and understood far more than she ever let on.
She was the most hard-working, goaloriented, and kind-hearted person I ever knew. She didn’t suffer fools gladly, but she treated everyone with disarming respect. She was wicked smart, quick to grasp the
point of any argument, and impatient with pretense. She was also serenely amused by the predictable mix of professional envy and institutional racism that saw less-qualified colleagues promoted ahead of her.
I remember well her righteous conviction as she assured me that she didn’t need me to file lawsuits on her behalf because she preferred to leave such matters in God’s hands. Sure enough, she was that rare Christian who lived by both the letter and spirit of the Golden Rule: treat others as you’d like others to treat you.
For most of her adult life, Maureen was the devoted single mother of two. She was caring, doting, and fiercely proud of her daughter, Billyca, her son, Bill, and her grandson, Khari. That they are such impressive young people is no accident and speaks volumes about the values she instilled. Given the depth of her devotion to them, that she herself became so professionally accomplished was truly a miracle.
From humble beginnings in The Bahamas, Maureen charted an improbable path through institutions across the Caribbean and the United States. Her journey led her to Ross University School of Medicine in Barbados, where she served as a Professor of Medical Education with distinction. Her work focused on student success, resilience, curriculum innovation, and the humane shaping of future physicians. She was an educator, mentor, researcher, and leader whose influence extended well beyond the classroom.
Her résumé speaks for itself, with decades of scholarship, peer-reviewed publications, and contributions to medical education that will shape how doctors are trained and supported for years to come. But what those lines on

her curriculum vitae cannot fully capture is the perseverance behind them. Maureen achieved what she did because she refused to give up despite hardships that would have driven most people to utter frustration and despair.
I watched in awe as she built her career brick by brick. I watched her outwork colleagues, outlast naysayers, and overcome seemingly insurmountable circumstances.
Yet words now fail to express how proud she made me feel. Not simply for what she achieved, but for how she achieved it. With integrity. With grit. With compassion. With grace under pressure. Our routine text messages will attest that I never missed an opportunity to tell her how much I loved her and how damn proud I was of her. That I did so is now tremendously comforting.
Maureen lived a purpose-driven life, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. Yet in watching her daughter Billyca forge her own path with the same brilliance, drive, and perseverance against all odds, we see Maureen’s legacy enduring in living color.
She died suddenly at home on Saturday, January 3. She was 59 years old.
Funeral services will be held in Freeport on February 21.
May her memory be a blessing.

June 21st, 1985 - February 13th, 2022
The day you left and gained your wings
Our hearts just broke in two
We wish you could have stayed with us
But Heaven needed you
You left us with the memories
And we love you dearly still
No matter how much time goes by
You know we always will
You were a very special son
With kindness in your heart
And the love we had together
Grows stronger now we’re apart
We know we cannot bring you back
Although we wish it everyday
But a piece of us went with you
The day you went away
Sadly missed but never forgotten, With lasting precious memories.
Your parents: Bishop Dr. Glen S. Beneby and Carolyn Beneby Family & Friends.
FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS
