hile Tamara Myers got another Bahamian national record, Devynne Charlton and Pedrya Seymour, the country’s two premier female hurdlers, turned in almost identical times for second in two separate races and twin brothers Latario and Lathone Collie made their return to competition in the men’s triple jump at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday and Saturday. Elsewhere in other meets around the United States, Keianna Albury, Leevan ‘Superman’ Sands, Kaze Poitier and Kirk Lewis were among the top performers. Andros native Myers, fresh off her breakout 2017 season that saw her eclipse the Bahamas women’s national outdoor triple jump record (14.03 metres or 46-feet, 0 1/2inches at the Penn Relays) on her way to securing a trip to compete in the IAAF World Championships in London, England, clinched the women’s triple jump title with her leap of 13.60m or 44-7 1/2. In the process, Myers added the Bahamas national indoor record to her ledger as she erased the previous mark of 13.54m (44-5 1/4) that was set by Grand Bahamian Daphne Saunders on January 29, 1994 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Myers’ nearest rival at the meet was Alex Madlock, a freshman at Baylor with 12.97m (42-6 3/4). “It feels good. My mind wasn’t on breaking the record. I wasn’t even aware of what the record was going into this meet,” Myers told The Tribune. “I was just trying to get a meet under my belt, but after I found out that I did break it, it was pretty exciting seeing that it wasn’t broken for a long time.” Myers, 24, said she had anticipated some of the collegiate athletes she competed against when she attended the University of Arkansas (up until her graduation in 2015) would have participated, but they were not so she didn’t have that much competition. And she also surpassed the B qualifying standard of 13.45m (47-5) for the Commonwealth Games,

BAISS ANNUAL TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THIS WEEK AS PLANNED By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) annual track and field championships will go on as planned this week, but organisers have decided to stage the first two days of competition on Wednesday and Thursday in the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium before moving to the TAR National Stadium for the final day on Friday. The BAISS made the adjustment to the venue after they renegotiated with the National Sports Authority over what they had called exorbitant fees charged for the use of the three days at the new stadium. Apparently, the BAISS felt the $6,500 per day to use the new stadium was simply too high, considering that the majority of the 11 participating schools only bring their athletes out for the first two days. It was understood that in addition to paying the NSA their fees, the BAISS also has to pay the Bahamas Association of Certified Officials (BACO) and the meet management team for putting on the meet and they were not making the money on the first two days with the gate fees. So the BAISS has decided to use the original stadium when the meet will get underway at 9am on Wednesday and continue at the same time on Thursday.

CAFL: NASSAU JETS WIN 3RD STRAIGHT BOIL FISH BOWL TITLE By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net MAKE that three consecutive Commonwealth American Football League “Bowl Fish Bowl” titles for the Nassau Jets. The Jets concluded a perfect season with a 32-6 win over the Orry J Sands Pros in the league’s championship game at the DW Davis Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Jets quarterback Phil Rolle accounted for four touchdowns on the afternoon - three passing and one rushing. He connected with Jamal Butler for two touchdowns and found Kristoff Wood for the third. After both teams stalled on their opening possessions, the Jets engineered a scoring drive through the air. Rolle connected with Darius Evans on a 30-yard pass play to get into the redzone. The drive was capped by a short yardage touchdown pass across the middle to Wood. Rolle scrambled for the

Pros quarterback Xavier Hanna saw his team’s drive stall near midfield on consecutive possessions and shanked punts placed the Jets in favourable field position on both drives. The Jets tacked on another score when Rolle found Butler deep down the sideline and exploited single coverage for a 60-yard score. Another successful conversion to

Wood gave the Jets a 16-0 lead. The Pros reached the scoreboard for the only time on their final possession of the half. Hanna picked up several big gains on the ground using quarterback draws, and completed a pair of passes to Ashley Roberts and another to Antonio Bullard to get the Pros near the goaline. Roberts would eventually score a rushing touchdown on an end around. The conversion failed

when Hanna fumbled the ball out of bounds and after a failed conversion, the Pros trailed 16-6 headed into the half. After a first half with no turnovers, the Jets had three interceptions in the second half from cornerback Tyneiko Williams. Butler caught his second touchdown reception of the game in the third quarter to make the score 24-6 headed into the fourth. Hanna was forced to exit the game due to an injury and the Jets’ defence took full advantage down the stretch to seal the win. The Jets got their final score of the game at the end of a 12-play drive when Rolle scrambled 15 yards for the score. The conversion to Ramon Mott added the final points to the scoreboard. A championship drought that began in the mid-1970s ended when the Jets claimed the 2015 Boil Fish Bowl with a 38-32 win over the Pros. Since then they have dominated the league for the past three seasons with undefeated records for the last two.

Munnings posted a monster stat line with a game high 26 points and a career high 20 rebounds in his ULM Warhawks’ 66-64 win over Georgia Southern. He shot 9-17 from the field, including 5-9 from three-point range and added three steals en route to recording his second double double of the season and 13th of his career. Munnings, who scored 14 of those points in the first half, became the 37th player in school history to score 1,000 points when he made a three with 17:40 left to play in the first half. “Travis Munnings played like a warrior for the entire 45 minutes,” Warhawks head coach Keith Richard said. “Travis made some big shots and he also came up big in the rebounding department, and he grabbed a lot of them.” There were 10 ties and 13 lead changes in the game, and the largest lead for either team was only five points. It was the first road win of the season for the struggling Warhawks. “It was a great scene in our locker room,” Richard

Charlton, who only has an offseason of eligibility left for the Purdue Boilermakers, competed unattached as she posted the fastest qualifying time of 8.24.

Seymour, competing in her senior year as a new member of Texas, also won her heat in 8.13 to qualify for the final of the women’s collegiate 60m hurdles with the fastest time. However, in the final, Seymour had to settle for second with 8.09 behind Louisiana’s sophomore Tonea Marshall, the winner in 8.04. Seymour is the national outdoor 100m record holder at 12.64. The Collie twins, inactive for more than a year, opened their season as they competed together in the men’s triple jump invitational. Latario had the best showing with a third place with 16.23m (53-3), which was just shy of the Commonwealth Games’ B standard of 16.25m (53-3 3/4), while Lathone had to settle for 11th with 15.60m (53-3). Also at the meet, Ryan Ingraham, competing unattached, was fourth in the men’s high jump invitational with a clearance of 2.12 metre or 6-feet, 11 1/2-inches. Vernon Turner, a freshman at Oklahoma, won the event with 2.33m (7-7 3/4). Grand Bahamian Holland Martin, in his freshman year for South Plains, had a best leap of

7.29m (23-11) for seventh place overall in the men’s long jump final. Corion Knight, a senior at Florida State, emerged as the winner with his leap of 8.02m (26-3 3/4). Shaquania Dorsett, another Grand Bahamian in her junior year at Florida State, finished 27th overall in the women’s 400m in 56.60. Purdue’s freshman Samara Miller was the winner in 53.59. And Xavier Coakley, a junior at Auburn, was disqualified in the men’s 200m. Albury picked up a victory At the SPIRE Open in Geneva, Ohio, Eleuthera native Keianna Albury, competing for Penn State, won her heat of the women’s 200m in 24.05 that was listed as the fastest time overall. Her teammate Kiara Lester was second in 24.10. Albury, however, got second in the 60m final in 7.47 behind Shyvonne Roxborough of Guelph in 7.42. In the preliminaries, Albury won her heat in 7.52 for the second fastest time as Roxborough had the fastest time of 7.52. Sands clinched third Leevan ‘Superman’ Sands, the national indoor and outdoor

record holder, was the lone Bahamian competing at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College in Boston. He had to settle for third place in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 15.78m (51-9 1/4) on his second attempt. In his season opener, Sands cleared 13.94m (45-9) on his first attempt; 15.69m (51-5 3/4) on his third; fouled the fourth; passed the fifth and closed out the competition with 15.49m (50-10) on his sixth and final jump. American Chris Carter won the competition with 16.67m (54-8 1/4) on both his third and fourth attempts and Troy Doris from Guyana was second with 16.49m (54-1 1/4) on his third attempt for second place. Poitier in action At the 2018 Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. Washington, Kaze Poitier sped to victory in his heat of the men’s 400m in 49.95, but that was only good enough for 21st overall. Mike Berry, unattached, was the winner in 46.49. Poitier was also fourth in his heat of the 200m in 22.83 for 24th place. His Academy

of Arts’ team-mate Mobolade Ajomale was the winner in 21.37. Poitier also ran the third leg with Ajomale on anchor as Academy of Arts won the men’s 4 x 400m relay in 3:14.03. Michael Houston and Christian Carter ran the first two legs respectively. Lewis eighth place At the 2018 Clemson Tiger Paw at the Clemson University Indoor Complex, Clemson’s senior Kirk Lewis slipped to eighth place in 7.80 in the final of the men’s 60m hurdles after he qualified in the preliminaries in that same position in 7.81. Also at the meet, Grand Bahamian Teray Smith, representing the Bahamas, was eighth in the men’s 200m in 21.13 with Omar McLeon, representing Nike, taking the title in 20.76. Ojay Ferguson, competing for Oxy Athletics, was 11th overall in the men’s 400m in 47.06. Michael Norman, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, was the winner of the event in 45.00. And Katrina Seymour, representing the Bahamas, was 23rd in the women’s 400m in 55.57. Kendall Ellis, a senior at USC, won the event in 51.57.

Three years ago, the Comets snapped the Big Red Machine’s stranglehold of the title. They went on to take the title back to Queen’s College for two years before St Augustine’s regained it last year. Munnings capped a 9-0 run midway through the first half with his three to take a 17-7 lead. They led 47-36 at the half. ULM improved to 7-0 on the season when shooting 50 per cent or better from the field. “It was a physically heroic effort, playing two overtime games in three days. Our players fought tooth and nail and found a way to win the game. “We’ve won four of our last five games, so we’re doing something right,” Richard continued. “The season is a journey, a journey to find a way to play your best basketball. It was a great road trip, and we’re playing our best basketball of the season during the second half of the league schedule.”

Mackey, Paige Stuart and Sierra Sears are the athletes to watch on the girls’ side. In the junior boys’ division, Ahmad Evans and Jamal Flowers are the go-to athletes, while it’s Javonya Valcourt and Paige Archer on the girls’ side. And for the bantam girls, it’s Sarah Hepburn and Lanique Thompson and the boys are Neugynen Culmer and Tristen Ferguson. Fraser said they have a number of other athletes who will make their presence felt when the meet starts. With a lot of their strengths on their middle and distance runners, Fraser said they should make it an interesting meet. “We don’t have a weak division. I think we are strong in all of the divisions,” he predicted. “All around we look good. It’s going to come down to who wants it the most. I think we are hungry enough to win it.” So who will win it this year? Only time will tell - from Wednesday to Friday.

The Giants prevailed with a 90-48 rout over the Rhythm Rebels and the Stingers nipped the Caro Contractors Pirates 76-75. United stumbles at Newcastle, Salah shines for Liverpool By STEVE DOUGLAS Associated Press ANOTHER stumble at St James’ Park for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho. Another goal in an extraordinary season for Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah. With a surprising 1-0 loss to Newcastle yesterday, United ceded some of the initiative in the race for second place in the Premier League and left its manager cursing the “gods of football” on his latest fruitless trip to the northeast. That’s seven league games without a win for Mourinho at Newcastle, six of which came as Chelsea coach. Worse was to follow for Mourinho, with Liverpool winning 2-0 at Southampton to trim the gap to secondplaced United to two points with 11 games left. Salah was again the star turn, setting up strike partner Roberto Firmino before scoring himself to make it 22 goals in his debut season for Liverpool. One goal behind Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Salah could yet head to his first World Cup with Egypt as the Premier League’s top scorer.

It looks like being a four-way battle for the three Champions League qualification places behind champion-elect Manchester City, which retained its 16-point lead thanks to United’s slip-up. Tottenham is two points behind Liverpool in fourth place and Chelsea is two points further back in fifth, with its game in hand against West Bromwich Albion today. In the other game Sunday, Huddersfield collected its first league win in nearly two months by beating Bournemouth 4-1 to climb out of the relegation zone. POGBA’S PROBLEMS Paul Pogba’s position in Man United’s team is up for debate following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez and the France international had another underwhelming match in centre midfield alongside Nemanja Matic. Pogba lasted 66 minutes before being substituted, seconds after Matt Ritchie put Newcastle ahead. He appeared to be feeling an injury in the warmup and was seen walking gingerly after the match, although

Barcelona stumbles again, held 0-0 at home by Getafe By TALES AZZONI Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Barcelona has hit a slump, and Atletico Madrid is back in the Spanish league title race. Barcelona stumbled for the second consecutive weekend in the league on Sunday, being held 0-0 by Getafe and seeing Atletico move within seven points of the lead. Atletico cut into Barcelona’s lead by defeating bottom side Malaga 1-0 on Saturday, extending its winning streak to three matches. Diego Simeone’s team hasn’t been this close to the lead since last year, when the gap was at six points in the 16th round. Barcelona had an 11-point lead two rounds ago. After needing a late equaliser to avoid defeat against crosstown rival Espanyol in the previous round, Barcelona couldn’t find the net against midtable Getafe at Camp Nou Stadium. Barcelona dominated but wasn’t able to create many significant scoring chances, and when it got close it was stopped by Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Bremen enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg in the late game, while Daniel Ginczek’s early goal was enough for Stuttgart’s 1-0 win against Borussia Moenchengladbach. It was Tayfun Korkut’s first win in his second game as Stuttgart coach. “We turned last week’s point to gold,” said Korkut, whose side moved four points above the relegation zone with 12 rounds remaining. Korkut received a cool welcome from Stuttgart fans after his appointment as Hannes Wolf’s replacement on Jan. 29.

US advances in Fed Cup, Serena loses in doubles By STEVE MEGARGEE Associated Press ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Serena Williams had said her return to tennis this weekend at the Fed Cup would represent the “start of a long process.” Her first match in over a year showed how far she has to go. In Williams’ first competition since giving birth five months ago, she and her sister Venus lost 6-2, 6-3 to Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands in a Fed Cup doubles match Sunday. The US already had clinched a victory in the best-of-five event thanks to a pair of singles victories by Venus Williams, so this doubles loss merely narrowed the final score to 3-1. The US advanced to a World Cup semi-final April 21-22 at France, which defeated Belgium 3-2 this weekend. But this event was most notable for the return of Serena Williams, five months after giving birth.

She hadn’t played competitive tennis since winning the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant for her 23rd career Grand Slam singles title, one off Margaret Court’s record. “Honestly, I feel like we were all a team out here, us playing and everyone in the stands,” Williams said in her postmatch interview in front of the sellout crowd of over 5,000 at US Cellular Center. “It was all of us together, and it felt awesome,” said Williams. Serena Williams’ daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, was wearing a headband with an American flag design while sitting with her father, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, just behind the players’ bench. Williams had told Vogue magazine that she developed several small blood clots in her lungs after her daughter was born. The article said that she was unable to get out of bed for the first six weeks after giving birth.
