CI Gibson dominated the second half and outscored the Mystic Marlins by 34-22 to spark a game one win. Rys-Shorn Strachan led the Rattlers with 21 points and 12

rebounds, Emmanuel Alexander scored 12, Jaheed Sanusi had nine and Jonathan St. Fleur scored eight. Josha Burrows and Tyeko both led the Mystic Marlins with 14 points each, Janus Shepherd scored 12 and Michael Balfour added nine. The Rattlers took a 57-48 lead into the fourth and led by as much

as 21 in the final period. Both teams shot the ball well from beyond the arch in the first quarter and set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Joshua Burrows made backto-back threes and the Mystic Marlins scored nine unanswered points to take an early 12-3 lead. Burrows again made a pull up jumper to go up 18-8.

BAHAMIAN athletes produced several top finishes, season’s bests and personal bests to highlight the indoor circuit of NCAA Division I Track and Field over the weekend. Laquan Nairn was one of the top performers for the Arkansas Razorbacks at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Nairn took first place in the men’s long jump, finishing with a season-best jump of 7.66m (25ft 1.75in). “I was really happy to see Laquan [Nairn] getting more and more consistent on the runway. I think that’s one of the things in the horizontal jumps with these elevated runways, getting the timing down in a competition setting is important,” said Razorbacks assistant coach Mario Sategna. Purdue Boilermakers Tamar Greene and Samson Colebrooke also turned in impressive performances at

the Fred Wilt Invitational. Greene took first place in the Men’s long jump with a personal best of 7.21m (23ft 8in). The sophomore jumper led a Boilermaker sweep atop the podium in the event. Colebrooke continues to excel in his first year with the programme. The junior transfer took third place in the men’s 60m with a time of 6.75 secs. In the final home meet of the Purdue track and field season, the Boilermakers accumulated 41 top-3 finishes, including 14 firstplace wins. Competing at the “Doc Hale” Elite Meet University of Miami Celine Thompson won the women’s high jump with a personal best mark of 1.74m, clearing the mark on her first attempt. THE Holland College Hurricanes are No 1 ranked team in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association the poll powered by Roosevelt Whylly who continues to be one of the league’s most dominant players. The Hurricanes remain undefeated at 14-0, rose to No 1 and maintained their position atop the standings with a 98-67 win over the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics. Whylly finished with 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. The Hurricanes also took a 112-89 victory on December 2 in the only matchup with the Mystics so far this season. The veteran forward is averaging a double double with 20.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He leads the league in both

Western Illinois jumper Amelia Peterson competed at the Don DeNoon Invitational in Illinois. She won the triple jump with a mark of 11.34m (37ft 2.5in) in the triple jump.

THE Los Angeles Lakers have been aggressively pursuing the New Orleans Pelicans’ All-Star forward Anthony Davis for the last few weeks. In a potential Davis trade, LeBron James is really the only Laker who is untouchable, putting the rest of the team on edge as the trade deadline approaches. Prior to January 31, the Pelicans had been lukewarm to even entertaining the Lakers about a potential deal involving Davis. That scenario changed, when Davis told Pelicans top brass, he wouldn’t sign a $239m max contract extension with the club when he becomes a free agent, and formally requested a trade, before the NBA’s trade deadline on Thursday. According to Charania, sources with The Athletic’s Pelicans reporter Will Guillory, said that the player not discussed in trades for Davis is Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. I think, that might be the asset not placed on the table that sources are talking about? The Lakers have struggled to win games during James absence of 17 straight games — as he’s been recovering from a groin strain. A James-Davis team would be awesome, another injury absence for James, would leave the team in a very tough spot if they had none of their young players.

Through the first two minutes of the second, they outscored the Mystic Marlins 12-2 and led 40-35 at the half. Doris Johnson would fight back in the third to come within one, but were never able to regain the lead. A Janus Shepherd jumper and three point play, brought the Mystic Marlins within one, 43-42, but Darryo Saunders made a three from the wing to keep the Rattlers ahead. championship series, one pennant winner remained undefeated while another finds itself facing elimination after a game one upset. Glennia Sands led three Rattlers in double figures with 14 points, Jaysline Garson scored 13 and Adalia Tucker finished with 11. D’Shante Cooper was the lone bright spot for the Stingrays with 13 points. The Rattlers opened the game on an 11-0 run before CV Bethel scored their first basket. BOTH defending GSSSA basketball junior division champions are now just one game away from successfully defending their titles following convincing game one wins. Junior Girls HO Nash Lions - 42 TA Thompson Scorpions - 28 Lions lead series 1-0 The Lions struck first in the latest edition of the rivalry between the division’s top teams in recent years. The Lions were led by the high-scoring duo of Geraniqua Bethel with 17 points and Jonique Cunningham with 15 points. Nathayla Lightbourne

led the Scorpions with ten points and Dominique Rolle finished with nine. Bethel’s jumper from the baseline was the first score of the game and the Lions began the game on an 8-0 run all scored by the Bethel/ Cunningham duo. Cunningham converted a three point play and the Lions full court trap continued to converted defensive stops into easy offence. They led 15-3 after one. The Scorpions scored their first field goal of the game in the second quarter and went on a run that eventually trimmed the defecit to six at one point on a Rolle layup to make the score 18-12. The Lions shifted momentum through their defence once again and responded with an 8-0 run of their own. They took

a 26-14 lead into the half and led 31-20 headed into the fourth. Bethel’s three pointer made it 40-23 with just over three minutes left to play and the Lions led by as much as 23 in the fourth. These same teams met in the 2018 championship series that was decided in three games and the Lions eventually claimed their third consecutive title. Dawkins came up with a steal and layup to regain 10 point lead headed into the fourth. The Royals led by nine for much of the fourth until the game’s waning moments. The Royals, perennial contenders for the Junior Boys title look to regain a familiar spot atop the league and claim their fourth consecutive title.

From victory at the Bowl to head man at Dolphins DAVIE, Florida Associated Press WHEN Brian Flores was asked how he celebrated winning the Super Bowl, he paused for several seconds and laughed. “I kissed my wife on the field,” Flores said. Then it was on to the next challenge, and a big one — fixing the Miami Dolphins. Flores, the New England Patriots’ linebackers coach and defensive play-caller, was hired Monday as Miami’s head coach. He accepted the job hours after helping the Patriots shut down the high-scoring Los Angeles Rams for a 13-3 victory in the title game Sunday night in Atlanta. “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours,” Flores said with a smile at a news conference that drew two dozen cameras. “Looking at this crowd here, you’d think we won the Super Bowl,” Miami owner Stephen Ross said. “I’ve never seen this many people in this room. ... To me, you start an organisation by signing a great leader. I believe we’ve found that leader.” Flores was the first person the Dolphins interviewed after they fired coach Adam Gase on Dec. 31. They decided on Jan. 11 to offer the job to Flores but had to wait until New England’s season ended to complete an agreement. “I wasn’t in a rush to become a head coach,” said

Flores, 37. “I had a good job in New England.” Flores said the Dolphins job was appealing because he shared a vision with general manager Chris Grier on how to build a winner. While preparing for the Super Bowl, Flores also began to hire a Miami staff. The group is expected to include former Colts and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell as assistant head coach, Patriots receivers coach Chad O’Shea as offensive coordinator and Packers assistant Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator. The son of Honduran immigrants, Flores grew up in Brooklyn and has spent his entire coaching career with the Patriots. He joined them in 2004 and became their de facto defensive coordinator a year ago after Matt Patricia left to join the Lions as their head coach. Flores is the ninth former assistant to Bill Belichick to become a head coach. He becomes the NFL’s fourth minority head coach for 2019, which is half the total of last season. Diversity advocates have questioned the effectiveness of the Rooney Rule requiring teams to interview at least one minority candidate for any head coach or general manager vacancy. A former Boston College linebacker, Flores also coached offense and special teams with New England. He has a long relationship with Grier, who took charge of football operations in the recent

Both started as scouts for the Patriots, the Dolphins’ longtime nemeses in the AFC East. Flores will report to Grier under the team’s new, more streamlined leadership structure. Among those attending the news conference were Flores’ wife, Jennifer, their three children and his high school coach. Also on hand was the last quarterback to lead Miami to a Super Bowl, Dan Marino, in 1984, and the last quarterback to help the Dolphins win one, Bob Griese, in 1973. Flores is leaving a team that won its sixth Super Bowl since 2002 to join a franchise that has not won

a playoff game since 2000 and plans to rebuild after another dismal season. The Dolphins went 7-9 in 2018 to miss the playoffs for the 15th time in 17 years. They allowed 6,257 yards, the most in franchise history, and the offense was also among the league’s worst, finishing ranked 31st. One win came at home against New England, when the Dolphins scored a miraculous touchdown with a pass and double lateral on the final play. The Patriots had expected a Hail Mary pass, and second-guessers complained that their secondary included lumbering 6-foot-6 Rob Gronkowski. “My last memory here

wasn’t a great one,” Flores said with a chuckle. That improbable finish couldn’t save Gase. Ross fired him, ordered a roster overhaul and acknowledged it may take several seasons to build a winner. The revamp is likely to include the departure of quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has been with Miami since 2012 but has never taken a postseason snap. Flores becomes Miami’s 10th head coach since 2004, including three interim coaches. Grier noted that two of Flores’ predecessors, Gase and Tony Sparano, reached the playoffs in their first season before the team backslid, so Miami will try a

more patient approach. “We want to build this where it’s long term and you can win for many years, instead of trying to go year to year,” Grier said. Flores is braced for the frustrations that come with rebuilding. “That’s part of leadership — dealing with adversity,” he said. “There’s going to be some pain. There’s pain for every team.” As for his curtailed Super Bowl celebration, he wasn’t complaining. “No, this is not getting cheated at all,” Flores said. “That was a great experience, but I guess I’ve always been this way — I look forward.”

ROB Gronkowski rumbled down the field, got past two defenders and hauled in the football to set up New England’s go-ahead touchdown. If this was the farewell performance for the Patriots tight end, he went out in playmaking style. Was it his biggest catch ever? “You tell me,” Gronkowski said after New England’s 13-3 Super Bowl victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. “It’s up there. I like making big catches like that.” That, of course, is what he has done his entire nineyear NFL career. The 29-year-old Gronkowski is a three-time Super Bowl champion who has been one of the most dominant players at his position. Ever. But his time is running out, and just when that happens has been a question all season. Back, knee, ankle and arm ailments have

sapped him of his ability to stay on the field. And, when he did play this season, he looked mostly like a shell of his All-Pro self. “Tonight, it’s about celebrating with my teammates and that decision will be made a week or two down the future,” Gronkowski said. “Because tonight, that’s what it’s about, is celebrating with my teammates. That’s what I’m worried about tonight.” Gronkowski was seen limping out of MercedesBenz Stadium after the game after injuring a quadriceps muscle on a hit in the third quarter. “Yeah, my quad, it hurts a lot,” he said. “I can barely walk right now.” He was plenty mobile when it mattered most, though. His two biggest catches came after the painful hit. For a few moments, it was just like old times. Brady to Gronk. “Incredible catch,” Brady said. “He’s an awesome teammate, friend, and I’m just so proud of everything that he’s done for our team.”

JULIAN Edelman is certainly a compelling story. A diminutive guy with a bushy beard, picked in the final round of the draft, defying the odds to become one of the NFL’s top receivers. And, now, a Super Bowl MVP. But let’s not forget one other fairly important element to this story: He cheated. Edelman was honored Monday for his ten-catch, 141-yard performance the previous night, the only discernable bright spot offensively in a dreary Super Bowl won by the New England Patriots. Commissioner Roger Goodell — the same guy who said with a straight face five days earlier that Colin Kaepernick’s two-yearsand-counting banishment from the league for protesting social injustice was merely a football decision made independently by 32 franchises — was all smiles as he handed Edelman his silver, football-shaped prize known as the Pete Rozelle Trophy. “Well deserved. Extraordinary performance, and not just last night, but his performance in postseason has been simply off the charts,” Goodell said. “Julian, congratulations. Come on up and get your trophy.” There was no mention of Edelman being suspended for the first four games of the season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. In his brief opening remarks, the receiver talked of the “ups and downs” the Patriots had been through, what he called “just the ebbs and flows of the season.” Then came the first question. “You missed last year (with a torn ACL), you come back this year and have a four-game suspension, talk about fighting back through adversity and coming out on the other end as the Super Bowl MVP,” the reporter said, a tone of admiration In his voice. “What did that mean to you, through all the work that you put in?” Coming off a serious knee injury, there’s no doubt Edelman worked extremely hard to make it back at age 32, when there was plenty of skepticism that he’d ever be as effective as he was before. But it’s also worth noting that Edelman gave his rehab an illicit boost by taking a PED, undoubtedly looking to improve the odds of returning to the field on the downside of his career. Edelman apologised for his mistake, expressed the usual confusion that all cheaters rely on when they’re caught, but never revealed the substance in question. He served the

RODNEY Hood made minimal impact on the Cavaliers’ postseason run last season. He’ll get a chance to do more with Portland. Hood was traded yesterday by the Cavaliers, who acquired guards Nik Stauskas and Wade Baldwin — and their expiring contracts — along with

second-round picks in 2021 and 2023 from the Trail Blazers. Before the trade could be completed, the Cavaliers needed Hood to agree to the deal because he signed a one-year $3.4m qualifying offer this summer. The 26-year-old waived his notrade clause to join the Blazers, who are 32-20 and have the fourth best record in the Western Conference.

Hood will give Portland some more scoring punch and can take some pressure off guards Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. He is averaging 12.2 points and 2.5 rebounds this season. The Cavaliers acquired Hood at the trade deadline from Utah last season, and they envisioned him being another scoring option to complement LeBron James and Kevin Love. However,

the 6-foot-8 forward never fully fit in with the Cavs, and after starting Cleveland’s first playoff game, he was pulled from the rotation by then-coach Tyronn Lue. The rebuilding Cavaliers are collecting draft assets following a four-year run to the Finals. It is possible they will deal Alec Burks or J.R. Smith before Thursday’s trade deadline. Stauskas

and Baldwin have expiring contracts, which will allow the Cavaliers to clear more salary-cap space to pursue free agents. Cleveland has added seven draft picks this season in deals for Hood, Kyle Korver, Sam Dekker and George Hill. To make roster room for Stauskas and Baldwin, the Cavaliers released guard Kobi Simmons from his

ten-day contract. Stauskas averaged 6.1 points and 15.3 minutes in 44 games for Portland this season. He also has played for Sacramento, Philadelphia and Brooklyn. The Kings selected him with the No 8 overall pick in 2014. Baldwin has played in 16 games for the Trail Blazers this season. He also has been with Texas Legends of the NBA’s G League.

BOSH IS FOREVER HEAT’S NO 1 MIAMI Associated Press CHRIS Bosh, who had arguably the biggest rebound and assist in Miami Heat history, will have his No 1 jersey retired by the franchise on March 26. The Heat made the announcement yesterday. Bosh played parts of six seasons in Miami, before his career was cut short by recurring issues with blood clots. He last played for the Heat in 2016. Bosh helped Miami reach the NBA Finals four times and win championships in 2012 and 2013. He grabbed a rebound and tossed the ball out to Ray Allen for a game-tying three-pointer with 5.2 seconds left in regulation of Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals against San Antonio, a game that the Heat would win in overtime to force Game 7. Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway and Shaquille O’Neal are the other Heat players to have jerseys retired. Dwyane Wade, Udonis Haslem and LeBron James will likely receive the same tribute in the coming years.

BAYERN ENDURING THEIR WORST BUNDESLIGA SEASON IN 7 YEARS

Bayern Munich are putting together their worst Bundesliga performance in seven years. A 3-1 loss at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday was Bayern’s fourth so far this campaign — as many as they had all of last season. Bayern haven’t lost so many games by the 20th round since Borussia Dortmund last won the title in 2012. On Feb. 4, 2012, Bayern’s 1-1 draw at Hamburg allowed Dortmund to take a twopoint lead in the Bundesliga with a win at Nuremberg. Bayern had five defeats already by that stage and lost the title by eight points. Dortmund also rubbed salt in Bavarian wounds by defeating Bayern 5-2 in the German Cup final to claim a domestic double. Dortmund is already seven points clear this season and looks a far better bet for the title than Niko Kovac’s disjointed team. Bayern haven’t been helped by injuries to Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, James Rodriguez, Thiago Alcantara and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, among others. The problems lie deeper, however. Neuer, Bayern’s captain, missed the defeat in Leverkusen with a right hand injury, but has looked a shadow of his former self when he has played this season. Once touted by German pundits as the best goalkeeper in the world, it’s no longer certain whether

Neuer, 32, is even the best in the country. He has been outshone by Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Yann Sommer, who has 10 clean sheets in 20 games, Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi, who has nine in 19, and Dortmund’s Roman Buerki, who has bailed out his defence consistently this season. That Bayern have missed Robben and Ribery says a lot about the state of the team. Both wingers are 35 and in their final months at the club, which should not be dependent on the two in its push for silverware. Nor have Bayern’s attempts to replace Robben and Ribery paid off so far. Canadian teen Alphonso Davies can hardly be expected to fill either hole on the wing so soon following his $22 million (18.75 million euros) transfer from the Vancouver Whitecaps last month. Kingsley Coman, 22, and Serge Gnabry, 23, haven’t looked convincing so far, and Bayern’s unsuccessful attempts to sign 18-year-old English forward Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea reveal a lack of faith in the players the club already has to replace the departing duo known as “Robbery.” Robert Lewandowski has looked a forlorn figure as Bayern misfires. The star forward showed his frustration in the defeat in Leverkusen, remonstrating with Coman for shooting instead of passing to him. Leon Goretzka scored, as it turned out, seconds later.

SYDNEY (AP) — Stephen Larkham has been fired as Wallabies attack coach eight months out from the Rugby World Cup. Larkham, who made 102 test appearances and won a World Cup for Australia, couldn’t agree with head coach Michael Cheika on attacking strategy or game philosophy in the wake of the national team’s worst seasons in six decades. Rugby Australia said the decision was made by Cheika, and Larkham would move to a new role as a national highperformance coach and adviser. Larkham’s removal is the first coaching change made by the Wallabies after a 2018 season in which they won only four of 13 tests. Cheika’s own job was in jeopardy at the end of last year.

Final Larkham has been the Wallabies attack coach since 2015 when, with Cheika, he helped guide the Australian team to the final of the World Cup in England. “Ultimately Michael is responsible for the performance of the team,” Larkham said in a statement. “We have differences in attacking strategy and overall game philosophy. “We couldn’t agree on these key points and it is in the best interest of the team that they receive clear and consistent messages from their coaches.” Australia won the Rugby World Cup in 1991 and in ‘99, when Larkham played a key role in the triumph, and lost finals to England in 2003 and to New Zealand in ‘15. But the Wallabies plummeted in the international rankings from No. 2 to No. 7 at one stage last season.

IRELAND NO 8 STANDER OUT FOR FOUR WEEKS WITH FACIAL INJURIES DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland hopes No. 8 CJ Stander will be available to return for the last two rounds of the Six Nations after suspected facial fractures. Ireland expect Stander to be sidelined “for up to four weeks” after he was injured early in a collision with England flanker Tom Curry but played into the fourth quarter in the 32-20 loss in Dublin on Saturday. Also, lock Devin Toner, wing Keith Earls, and center Garry Ringrose were all fitness doubts for the match this Saturday against Scotland at Murrayfield, the Irish Rugby Football Union said in a statement on Monday.

A four-week layoff could see Stander return for the March 10 home match with France, and the final clash on March 16 in Wales. Stander’s brother-in-law, Ryk Neethling, tweeted on Saturday night “proud of CJ Stander playing 62mins with two fractures in his cheek and eye socket,” though Ireland has yet to confirm the extent of the injuries. Backup No. 8 Jack Conan was in line to play, as was Sean O’Brien, who replaced Stander against England. Toner aggravated an ankle injury, Earls suffered a hip pointer, and Ringrose reported hamstring tightness, but Ireland has not summoned any replacements into the squad.
