Are the brains of atheists different to those of religious people? Scientists are trying to find out By MIGUEL FARIAS Associate Professor in Experimental Psychology, Coventry University (THE COVERSATION) - The cognitive study of religion has recently reached a new, unknown land: the minds of unbelievers. Do atheists think differently from religious people? Is there something special about how their brains work? To illustrate what they’ve found, I will focus on three key snapshots. The first one, from 2003, is probably the most photogenic moment of “neuroatheism”. Biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins travelled to the lab of Canadian neuroscientist Michael Persinger in the hope of having a religious experience. In this BBC Horizon film, God on the Brain, a retro science-fiction helmet was placed on Dawkins head. This “god helmet” generated weak magnetic fields, applied to the temporal lobes. Persinger had previously shown that this kind of stimulation triggered a wide range of religious phenomena – from sensing the presence of someone invisible to prompting out-of-body experiences. With Dawkins, though, the experiment failed. As it turned out, Persinger explained, Dawkins’ temporal lobe sensitivity was “much, much lower” than is common in most people. The idea that the temporal lobes may be the seat of religious experience has been around since the 1960s. But this was the first time that the hypothesis was extended to explain the lack of religious experience based on the lower sensitivity
of a brain region. Despite the exciting possibility of testing this hypothesis with a larger sample of atheists, it remains to be done. The second snapshot takes us to 2012. Three articles published by labs in the USA and Canada presented the first evidence linking an analytical, logical thinking style to unbelief. Psychologists have been theorising about different ways that brains process information for a long time: conscious versus
unconscious, reflective versus experiential, analytical versus intuitive. These are linked to activity in certain brain areas, and can be triggered by stimuli including art. The researchers asked participants to contemplate Rodin’s famous sculpture, The Thinker, and then assessed their analytical thinking and disbelief in god. They found that those who had viewed the sculpture performed better on the analytical thinking task and reported less belief in god than people who hadn’t
seen the image. In the same year, a Finnish lab published the results of a study where their scientists tried to provoke atheists into thinking supernaturally by presenting them with a series of short stories and asking if the punchline was a “sign of the universe” (interpreting something as a “sign” is more supernatural than interpreting something as, for example,

They did this while scanning their brains using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The more the participants suppressed supernatural thinking, the stronger the activation of the right inferior frontal gyrus was. We know this area is involved in cognitive inhibition, an ability to refrain from certain thoughts and behaviours. Together, these studies suggest that atheists have a propensity to engage more in analytical or reflective thinking. If believing in gods is intuitive, then this intuition can be overridden by more careful thinking. This finding certainly raised the possibility that the minds of atheists are simply different from those of believers. REPLICATION CRISIS So how robust are the findings? In 2015, a “replication crisis” hit the field of psychology. It turned out that the results of many classic studies couldn’t be achieved when running them again. The psychology of religion and atheism was no exception. The experiment with Rodin’s Thinker was the first to be investigated. Three new studies were conducted with larger samples than the original — and they all failed to replicate the original results. With one sample, they found the very opposite: contemplating the Thinker increased religious belief. One possible limitation with the original studies is that they had all been undertaken in the USA. Could culture act in such a decisive way that the analytical cognitive style associated with atheism in one country might be nonexistent elsewhere? The author of the original Rodin study attempted to answer this in a new study which included individuals from 13 countries. The results confirmed that a cognitive analytical style was only linked to atheism in three countries: Australia, Singapore and the USA. In 2017, a double-blind study was carried out to test in a more robust way the link between unbelief and cognitive inhibition. Instead of using brain imaging to see which area lit up, they used a brain
stimulation technique to directly stimulate the area responsible for cognitive inhibition: the right inferior frontal gyrus. Half of the participants, however were given a fake stimulus. The results showed that the brain stimulation worked: participants who had it achieved better in a cognitive inhibition task. However, this had no effect on decreasing supernatural belief. THE COMPLEXITY OF ATHEISM The third snapshot is this one: a man is standing against a background which looks like a church. He appears to be doing the sign of the cross with his right hand while his left hand rests on his heart. He is a priest – but not of any church that believes in gods: he presides over the Positivist Temple of Humanity, a church for atheists and agnostics created by August Comte in the 19th century. This priest is not doing the sign of cross but the Positivist blessing. Together with photographer Aubrey Wade, I stumbled upon this active temple in the south of Brazil, while collecting data for a large ongoing project involving over 20 labs across the world: Understanding Unbelief. Finding an active church of unbelievers dedicated to the love of humanity — its golden principle being “live for others” — ruptured how I thought of atheists and the boundary separating them from the religious. And this has implications for how we develop studies in this area. When doing experiments with believers we can use multiple stimuli, from religious images to music, to trigger a religious effect or cognition in the lab. But finding an equivalent for unbelievers has proved hard. One brain imaging study conducted at Oxford University compared an image of the Virgin Mary with that of a regular woman, both painted in the same period. Researchers found that when Roman Catholics concentrated on the Virgin Mary while being subjected to electric shocks, this alleviated their perception of pain compared to looking at the other woman. This decrease in pain was associated with an engagement of the right ventro-lateral prefrontal cortex, a region

known to drive pain inhibitory circuits. No similar effect was found for the unbelievers, although they rated the secular image as more pleasant than the religious one. But what if the unbelievers being tested were members of the Positivist Temple and were instead shown an image of their goddess of humanity — would this have alleviated pain in a similar way to that experienced by the religious individuals? The future cognitive science of
atheism will have to think hard about how to move forward. ABORTION For leaders of the two largest Christian denominations in the US — the Roman Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Convention — the paramount concern about the Biden administration is its strong support for abortion rights. Biden, a practicing Catholic, already has rolled back some Trump policies aimed at curbing abortion access. On January 22, the 48th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision establishing a nationwide right to abortion, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris said they would seek to enshrine that right into federal law to protect it from court challenges. That stance was assailed by Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, who chairs the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities. “It is deeply disturbing and tragic that any president would praise and commit to codifying a Supreme Court ruling that denies unborn children their most basic human and civil right,” he said. The Rev Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said in a recent radio broadcast that Biden “is entirely, unquestionably sold out to the abortion rights movement”. Clergy of other denominations who support abortion rights, including from mainline Protestant churches and the Reform and Conservative branches of Judaism, will likely embrace the administration’s efforts to expand access. “We’re not pro-choice in spite of our faith — we’re pro-choice because of our faith,” said the Very Rev Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, an Episcopal priest and president of the National Abortion Federation. LGBTQ RIGHTS VS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM Another issue uniting Catholic and Southern Baptist leaders is concern about expanding nondiscrimination protections
for LGBTQ people. They say such measures — some already taken and others expected later — could infringe on religious freedom for faiths that oppose same-sex marriage and question the inclusion of gender identity in nondiscrimination policies. In a recent statement, five prominent bishops warned about “the imposition of new attitudes and false theories on human sexuality which can produce social harms”. Massimo Faggioli, a Villanova University theology professor who authored a book about Biden and US Catholicism, said these issues will fuel serious tensions. The bishops, he said, fear Catholic institutions will lose their right to provide government-subsidised social services if they do not abide by certain nondiscriminatory policies. Francis DeBernardo of New Ways Ministry, which advocates for LGBTQ Catholics, predicted that Biden will find a balance even as he bolsters LBGTQ rights. “As a person deeply committed to his church, he is not likely to trample on the religious liberties of faith institutions,” DeBernardo said. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, another conservative denomination, may be relieved at Trump’s departure and willing to work with Biden on some issues, said Matthew Bowman, chair of Mormon studies at Claremont Graduate University in California. Bowman said they would likely ask that any new nondiscrimination initiatives provide expansive exemptions for religious institutions, however, including
faith-based schools such as Brigham Young University. IMMIGRATION Faith-based groups have called for raising the annual cap on refugee admissions to the US and relief for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which shields some young immigrants from deportation. Evangelical organisations that assist refugees offered advance praise for Biden’s expected raising of the admissions ceiling after what one called “numerous harmful changes” under Trump. Leaders of the Catholic bishops’ conference cheered Biden for shoring up DACA on his first day in office, while urging him to go further by creating a path to citizenship for its beneficiaries as a “first step” toward a broader overhaul. More action is set to come from the White House as soon as this week, and lawmakers also vow to pursue it through legislation. Whether religious groups can maintain their support for future immigration measures may depend on the specifics. RACIAL INEQUALITY Many denominations in the US have committed to combating racial injustice. Their leaders were critical of Trump’s divisive rhetoric and expect Biden and Harris to make substantive efforts to reduce racial inequality. “It’s my hope that the administration will do everything they can to promote racial justice, truth-telling and healing,” said Michael Curry, the first African American to serve as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. He added that criminal justice and education are areas where racial disparities must be addressed. The Rev Terri Hord Owens, the first African American to lead the Disciples of Christ, was encouraged by the Biden transition team’s extensive outreach to faith leaders and hopes the administration can address economic inequality in ways that will simultaneously combat racial injustice. The chairman of the Catholic bishops’ Committee on Racism, Bishop Shelton Fabre of the Houma-Thibodaux diocese in Louisiana, said differences with Biden over abortion won’t prevent cooperation on race-related matters. “While we have strong disagreements regarding abortion and other issues … I nonetheless look forward to working
together to address racism as it impacts society and individuals,” Fabre said. The Rev Russell Moore, head of the Southern Baptists’ public policy arm, acknowledged that some white evangelicals don’t consider racial inequality a high-priority issue. But he argued that it’s crucial to develop a “Christian vision of racial justice” and said an increasing number of multiethnic evangelical churches share his view. DOMESTIC SECURITY The January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol lent fresh urgency to the debate over combatting domestic security threats, including hate crimes targeting houses of worship in recent years. Faith-based groups such as the Jewish Orthodox Union lauded an increase in federal grant money for protection at religious institutions, aid that’s distributed through a programme Biden vows to strengthen. But discussion of expanding legal authority to prosecute alleged domestic terrorists has raised alarms among civil rights groups, including Muslim organisations that fear it could be unduly deployed against minority communities. Among the 135 groups signing a letter last month opposing establishment of a new domestic terrorism charge or “other expansion of existing terrorism-related authorities” were six Muslim American groups, three Jewish American groups, and the United Church of Christ. PANDEMIC RELIEF Religious leaders have played a central role in aiding communities wracked by the pandemic, and their representatives have stepped forward in recent days to seek more help from Washington. The Circle of Protection, an influential alliance of Christian leaders, wrote to the White House and Congress last week to offer proposals for prioritisation in any future pandemic relief package. The Circle urged that any direct relief payments be focused on people “beneath or near the poverty line” and that the package include boosts to nutrition aid and the Earned Income Tax Credit and help for fighting the coronavirus abroad in poor nations. Signatories to the letter included leaders from the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church and the National Association of Evangelicals.

Tribune Religion spoke to a number of people about choosing their words wisely in this day and age of what is spoken verbally and via social media. “I grew up with a family mantra of knowing that there is life and death in the tongue. And though I am not perfect and I sometimes live with words of doubt, I try my best to speak life, not only over my name but over my family as well. When I pray I am specific, I call names and ask God for things I know we all need. Even when I am joking with my friends, I try to be extra careful with my words; this is so important,” said Trina Bowleg. Annie Sands added that her choice of words is success, good health, wealth, and opportunities. “I was always advised to use my words wisely and I teach my children the same. If you had a bad day yesterday, wake up into the new day speaking the words that today will be better than your yesterday, and I guarantee you will see and notice the difference. Can you imagine talking down on yourself all the time and not believing in yourself, you will singlehandedly

become your biggest enemy and this is dangerous. I remember when people said talking to yourself makes you look like a crazy person. Oh, but it is quite the opposite, as long as your words are positive, it empowers you baby,” said Ms Sands. Breanna Moxey said she will always choose to spread life through her words in a world that can be so dark at times. “It’s funny how we can watch superheroes on television and admire their powers. But how can we not recognise and realise the power God has given us as human beings; this power is our words. We can go to any corner in our homes or any place in this world and have a conversation with God just through our words alone; man if this isn’t powerful, I don’t know what is. He gave us this gift to use wisely so we should speak wisely and manifest what you want in this life firstly through your words, then through your actions because faith without works we know, is dead. I thank God for each and every day he gives me and I always try to start my day with affirmations. At one time I used to write them on stickies and place them on areas in my home where I would frequent, I haven’t done this in a while but after this conversation today I am reminded that I need to start again,” said Ms Moxey.

HERE are at least three ways to look at this topic given to me: A. Parents’ responsibility as being held accountable for their children’s delinquency B. Parents’ role in assisting with the rehabilitation of their delinquent children C. Recommendations for a healthy home life for prevention and cure. A. The Liability of Parents Some parents contribute to their children’s delinquency by: 1. Supervision: Little or none 2. Example: poor example themselves (stealing, drug pushing) 3: Involvement: including them in their own illegal or immoral activities 4. Abuse: sexual, physical, verbal leads the child to look for love elsewhere 5. Alcohol: Encouraging children to drink from an early age 6. Promoting promiscuity: dressing little girls as women, encouraging boys to “sow wild oats”, or at least not discouraging. B. Parents’ Role in the Rehabilitation of their Children 1. Acceptance of the reality of the situation/ no denial. 2. Cooperation with all authorities/ no cloaking. 3. Self-examination and admission of the previously mentioned behaviours 4. Intentional changes in the family’s lifestyle to provide more support and encouragement 5. Need for love, forgiveness, affection, positive attention 6. Role-play to anticipate situations and model e.g. no constant reminders of the past 7. Better communication (listening, sharing honestly, no lecturing or ridicule) 8. Ask for help with parenting (e.g. parents’ support group) and attend classes for parents. 9. Better family planning to have more time and resources for each child 10. Agreement to boarding school arrangements once available (child
is at home on weekends only, holidays only or supervised visits only). C. Promoting Healthy Lifestyles to Prevent and Cure delinquency
Let us all pray daily for healthy lifestyles in our Bahamian families, for parents to model and teach healthy lifestyles.
1. Dictionary definition of the word lifestyle: “a way of life or style of living that reflects the values and attitudes of an individual or group” (Webster’s II New College Dictionary). 2. Family values, attitudes, goals which each family should have: a vision statement, a mission statement, and documented goals for each member. 3. i) Questions for family members to answer honestly: What is my current lifestyle like? How do I spend my money? How do I spend my time? What are my priorities? ii. Questions for parents in particular to answer: What do I need to change to have a healthier lifestyle? How do I feel about my current lifestyle? How do I feel about the time and energy needed to promote a healthy lifestyle? How does my current lifestyle influence my family? Do I want the lifestyle of my child/children to be just like mine? If not, what do I need to change and how soon am I willing to make those changes? 4. Support should be given to pursue positive values and to develop positive attitudes—parents must lead by example: family goals, positive attitudes and actions, wise choices, controlling nhealthy thoughts, working for peace and harmony, reconciliation with forgiveness, not being abusive or violent, and loving each other and oneself in appropriate ways 5. Improving the family’s nutritional health, especially overuse of sugary food and junk food. Also monitoring of children’s sleep and rest (no TV, telephone, computer in bedrooms), regular exercise, and regular medical examinations.
6. Spiritual emphasis: i. Cultivating a life of daily prayer, bible reading and meditation ii. Family worship at home and weekly in church iii. Sharing of spiritual experiences, prayer requests, etc. 7. Reflection and re-education about practices copied from parents’ families of origin which need to be modified or eliminated using parenting classes and attendance at support group meetings for parents to continue to be held accountable, receive assistance, and to monitor the home situation more objectively. 8. For all of us to preach, teach and practice nationally: the celebration of each other as unique, consistent discipline, fair treatment, proper supervision & protection, honesty and kindness, care and compassion, patience & respect, and love, laughter, play such as Proverbs 17:22 NRSV: 22” A cheerful heart is a good

HEARTFELT MEMORIAL FOR BTVI STAFF, TARAN CLEARE.
BTVI PAYS TRIBUTE TO COLLEAGUE TARAN STAFF and faculty at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) held a memorial service for colleague, Taran Cleare, who recently passed away. The prayer session and memorial service, organised by the Student Affairs department, was held via Zoom, under the theme, ‘I have a plan for you,’ taken from Jeremiah 29:11. Ms Cleare was benefits manager and worked at the institution for eight years. BTVI chairman Kevin Basden noted Ms Cleare was “well respected”. “Ms Cleare was humble, unassuming, she had a beautiful smile and was always willing to help, and give advice and guidance beyond BTVI matters,” said he said. Associate vice president of administrative services Zakia Winder described the occasion as “sad and surreal.”
She said Ms Cleare was dedicated to BTVI, adding: “She did not waver in her service to her colleagues…she was genuinely empathetic, always willing to listen, never harsh or cruel…we will miss her vivaciousness, her dose of humour, assigning nicknames, her positivity, and grateful and humble spirit.” Ms Winder said the news of Ms Cleare’s passing was “devastating” to the human resources team and they “struggle” to look at the desk where she once sat. She was considered the “go-to person” for many things in the department from vacation and pension to sick days. The prayer session is conducted by the Student Affairs department each January as a means for staff, faculty and students to reset, reassess and realign their spiritual lives. However, this year, it took on
an added twist with the memorial. BTVI president Dr Robert W Robertson was unable to attend the memorial but said Ms Cleare was a model employee. “She was a trusted member of the team, who always exhibited professionalism. Her calm, inviting spirit made colleagues comfortable on a professional and personal level. Ms Cleare truly was a special kind of worker and will be greatly missed,” said Dr Robertson. Addressing the BTVI family for the second consecutive year was Reverend Angela Palacious. Basing her message on the plans God has for the lives of people, Reverend Palacious emphasised it is important to first listen for the plan and then to be obedient. “Be faithful in your part of the plan… you are a person of influence. Someone
is always watching. Today may be the day you can bring salvation to someone else… see every day as a day of opportunity to please God in some way,” she said. “Think of Saul becoming Paul, fishermen becoming disciples, prostitutes becoming prayer warriors. This is what God is offering us - a plan. God is a transforming God. Think of the butterfly, the oyster, the diamond,” added Reverend Palacious. Following her address, there were stations of prayer for the nation’s leaders, for BTVI’s leaders, faculty, staff and students. Dean of Student Affairs Racquel Bethel ended the prayer session and memorial by adding that Ms Cleare was a “gem” and her passing is a “great loss” for the institution.

PERATING by the scripture “whatever you do for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” was the driving force behind Hadassah’s Helping Hands Foundation behind the organisation’s recent community feeding breakfast drive initiative. Hadassah’s Helping Hands Foundation in conjunction with the National Neighborhood Watch Council (Eastern Division), and local police officers hosted a breakfast drive at Elizabeth Estates Basketball Court on Saturday. A total of 250 people were fed hot meals which included grits, tuna salad, steamed tuna, steamed sausage, apples, oranges, juice and water. According to the foundation’s founder, Ferrice Kemp, the purpose was to give back and foster a relationship with the police, the HHH Foundation and residents. The organisation seeks to exhibit brotherly and sisterly love to all those it can reach. With this being its first giveback this year, Ms Kemp said the group is just getting started. “Our goal for the year 2021 and beyond is to partner and foster relationships with more NGOs and programmes such as the National Neighborhood Watch Council. There are so many individuals throughout our communities who are in need, especially during this time of us living through a pandemic of COVID-19; individuals have lost their jobs, homes and have no means of providing for themselves or families and it is our duty to help and be our brothers and sisters keeper,” she said. Ms Kemp encourages all those who are able to donate to its continued efforts. “We intend to host more grocery drives, and have more sponsors on board so that we can feed as many people as possible. July 2020 we were able to provide over 400 hot meals with water, 200 grocery care packages, 195 snack bags for the kids. “This year we wish to do more and help as many people that we can, but we are in need of corporate sponors to assist with this task. What we do is mostly done out of pocket as well as donations from family and friends. The foundation has a lot of give backs and projects planned for 2021 such as: clothing drives, grocery drives, feeding drives, clean up our communities project, health seminars and more,” she said. Ms Kemp also extended her gratitude to those who played a pivotal role in the making the recent food drive a huge success. “The event was well attended and additional support was given by the Officer in charge of the Eastern Division, Chief Supt L Moxey, Supt K.
