Final matchups set in BAISS championships

he final series matchups are all set in the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools basketball championships. The best-of-three series in each division begins on Thursday, February 1 at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. Both girls teams from the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine, and both boys teams from the Jordan Prince William Falcons advanced to the final. In Junior Girls, SAC won 37-30 over the St John’s Giants. Antonicia Moultrie scored eight of her 12 points in a pivotal third quarter that saw the Big Red Machine take the lead and control of the game and earn the right to defend their title. St John’s scored off the opening tip and the score was tied at five

before the Giants’ Sidney Hilarie made a corner three and Calvanique Spence added a layup to end the quarter on a 5-0 run and take a 10-5 lead. SAC opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run of their own to tie it before the Giants scored their first basket of the period. Hilarie made an acrobatic layup to take a 18-14 lead headed into the half. The Giants led 21-20 with 3:03 left to play in the third and Moultrie finally gave SAC their first lead of the game when she made a pair at the line moments later. Rachael Rolle and Gabriel Murphy followed with layups for a 27-22 Big Red Machine lead headed into the fourth. Murphy gave SAC a 31-26 SAC lead with just under three minutes

left to play and they maintained a six-point lead throughout much of the fourth to advance. They face No.1 seed Jordan Prince William Falcons, who advanced on Monday with a 34-29 win over the Queen’s College Comets. In the Senior Girls matchup, SAC escaped with a 35-34 win over the Giants. After falling behind early 8-4, the Giants took a 10-8 lead at the end of the first and 15-13 lead at the half. St John’s scored on their first two field goal attempts to take an early six-point lead in the third quarter. After the Big Red Machine cut it to one on a jumper, the Giants cut the SAC run short with a driving layup. SAC took a brief 22-21 lead but the Giants would again

respond with a score to take a 23-22 lead into the fourth. Both teams traded baskets for much of the early portion of the fourth and the Giants clung to a 33-32 lead with just under two minutes left to play. Late free throws would seal the win down the stretch for the Falcons. They will advance to face the Jordan Prince William Falcons who defeated the QC Comets 66-27 in the other semi-final. The Falcons have placed four teams in Thursday’s championship series. Both Junior Girls and Senior Girls will feature the Falcons versus the Big Red Machine. In the Junior Boys, the Falcons will face the Temple Christian Suns and in Senior Boys the Falcons and Big Red Machine face off in a rematch of last year’s series.

PIRATES ROUT PROS, BUCKETS TOP EAGLES NEST 95-78 CARO Contractors Pirates and Aliv Buckets came away with victories in the New Providence Basketball Association’s double header at the AF Adderley Gymnasium on Monday night. In the men’s division one feature contest, the Pirates routed the Island Game Pros 108-81 and in the division II opener, Aliv Buckets got by the Eagles Nest 95-78. Pirates 108, Pros 81 Tevin Hudson, in 26 minutes and 47 seconds, scored 23 points on 10-for-15 from the field, 1-for-1 from the three-point line and 2-for-3 from the free throw line to lead Caro Contractors and he also dished out nine assists, pulled down five rebounds and dished out four steals. Craig Smith Jr had 22 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals, Dominique Fernander had 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Jamington Johnson had 10 points and Romell Johnson helped out with eight points. In a losing effort for Island Game, Colton Albury came up with a game high 25 points on 10-for-16 from the field, 1-for-3 from behind the three-point line and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe in 34:11 minutes. Steve Miller had 13 points, six assists and four rebounds, Derrick Ferguson had 11 points and Judino Wilson added 10 points with seven assists. The Pirates took advantage of their 18-10 difference in turnovers to outscore the Pros 33-11 on points off turnovers. They also had a 58-40 advantage in points in the paint and were 22-4 in fast break points. Off the bench, the Pirates outscored the Pros 26-21. Alive Bucket 95, Eagles Nest 78 Forward Rashad Ingraham exploded for 32 points, shooting 14-for-26 from the field and 4-for-9 from the three-point line without any free throw attempts in 34:16 minutes to pace the winners. He also had 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Dylan Musgrove had 26 points and eight rebounds and Anwar Neilly added 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. After playing to an 18-18 tie at the end of the first quarter, Aliv pulled away for a 43-35 margin at the half and they never looked back as they increased it to 64-51 at the end of the third. They never trailed in the fourth when they went on a 31-27 spurt to secure the win. For the Eagles Nest, Janaldo Joseph scored 21 points in 32:47 minutes with six rebounds. Troy Trembley came off the bench and contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Tyrell Butler had 11 points and six rebounds and both Antone Brown and Bradley Altidor had eight points with 13 and seven rebounds respectively.

Patriots enjoy big Super Bowl experience edge over Eagles By KYLE HIGHTOWER AP Sports Writer BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — The Eagles are playing some of their best football heading into Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup with the Patriots. One thing Philadelphia can’t contend with is New England’s huge experience advantage in the big game. On the 53-man active roster the Patriots brought to Minnesota, 32 players have a combined 60 games of Super Bowl experience. Tom Brady alone has been to the Super Bowl seven times during his 18-year career, winning five. By comparison, the Eagles have seven players on their active roster who’ve won a Super Bowl. Two of those players, LeGarrette Blount and Chris Long, won their rings last season with the Patriots. The others are Torrey Smith, Malcolm Jenkins, Corey Graham, Dannell Ellerbe and Will Beatty. An eighth player, Chris Maragos, is on injured reserve with a knee injury. It’s a huge gulf. By comparison, the 2015 Panthers that lost to the Broncos in the Super Bowl that season had three players who had won a ring: Ed Dickson (Baltimore), Roman Harper (New Orleans) and Michael Oher (Baltimore). But the Patriots say it’s nothing they will spend time talking about this week. “I think it’s overrated,” said special teams captain Matt Slater, who will be appearing in his fourth Super Bowl. Defensive end Trey Flowers said the coaching staff hasn’t mentioned last year’s Super Bowl win since it came up in film study prior to their regular-season meeting with Atlanta back in October.

(AP Photo/Matt Slocum) “It’s a brand new team, so I wouldn’t say last year’s experience will have anything to do with the outcome of this game,” Flowers said. “This team has a lot of different guys from a year ago, so it’s something you’ve got to do all over again as far as experience goes.” Yes and no. New England actually returns 31 players who were on last year’s Super Bowl roster against the Falcons. That doesn’t include injured linebacker Dont’a Hightower or receiver Julian Edelman. Two of the Patriots’ additions since then both played in the Super Bowl with other teams. Linebacker James Harrison won two rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers and defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois played on the San Francisco 49ers team that came up short against Baltimore in the Super Bowl at the end of the 2012 season. “We know what to expect, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to perform,” linebacker Kyle Van Noy said. “So there’s really no

upper hand. You’ve got to just play the game and get ready for it and play at a high level.” He said that is because there is respect across the board for what backup quarterback Nick Foles has accomplished since Carson Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14. “Everyone wants to hate on Nick Foles, but he’s done a great job,” Van Noy said. “He’s still a high-calibre quarterback, like Carson Wentz. Nick Foles is a great quarterback who’s done a great job. They distribute the ball really well and their run game is at a high level.” More than experience on either side, linebacker Elandon Roberts said the biggest challenge is not getting caught up in the emotions that come with playing in a Super Bowl. “Obviously it’s all the marbles right here, but it’s everything you work for,” Roberts said. “So you’ve got to think back to what got you here: doing your job, not getting overwhelmed and what not. As long as we do that that takes away most of it.”

Harden first NBA player to score 60 in triple double HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden became the first player in NBA history to score 60 points as part of a triple-double and the short-handed Houston Rockets beat the Orlando Magic 114-107 on Tuesday night. Harden scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to eclipse the 57 points Calvin Murphy scored in 1978 to break Houston’s singlegame scoring record. After Harden broke the record, cameras in the arena showed a shot of Murphy, who works on the television broadcast team, smiling and clapping for the Beard, who also had 10 rebounds and 11 assists. The game was tied at 107 after a basket by Marreese Speights with just under four minutes to play. Neither team scored for more than two minutes after that before Harden took over, scoring the next six points to make it 113-107 with 45 seconds left. He set the scoring mark when he stepped back and made a 3-pointer before crashing to the court after being fouled by Mario Hezonja. He then made the free throw to give him 60 points and bringing the crowd to its feet. Hezonja and Speights scored 17 points each for the Magic, who dropped their third straight. PISTONS 125, CAVALIERS 114 DETROIT (AP) — Andre Drummond had 21 points and 22 rebounds, and the short-handed Detroit Pistons beat Cleveland after the Cavaliers lost Kevin Love to a potentially season-altering hand injury. Love exited in the first quarter with a broken left hand, and the Pistons took advantage of his absence, snapping an eight-game losing streak despite a roster that was depleted by their blockbuster trade for Blake Griffin. DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond has been added to the NBA All-Star Game, replacing injured Washington guard John Wall . The Pistons announced Drummond’s selection Tuesday night. Drummond is an All-Star for the second time. He also represented the Pistons in 2016. He entered Tuesday night’s game against Cleveland averaging 14.7 points and 15.1 rebounds. After Drummond was initially left out of this year’s All-Star game, he posted to his Twitter account: “Guess I gotta start doing back flips after every point I score to get attention around here!”

Wizards All-Star guard John Wall to have left knee surgery By HOWARD FENDRICH Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Wizards point guard John Wall will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Wednesday and could miss much of the rest of the regular season. The Wizards announced Tuesday that Wall would have the operation in Cleveland and that a timeline for his return would be determined afterward. A person with direct knowledge of the injury said Wall could miss six to eight weeks. That person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not release any estimate of the length of Wall’s absence. Washington’s last regular-season game is April 11. “It just proves that he wasn’t the John that we know,” backup guard Tomas Satoransky said. “His knee was bothering him all season long.” This is the latest knee problem for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft out of Kentucky. Wall had surgery on both of his knees before last season. Jordan Prince William senior girls rout Queenâ€™s College Comets 66-27

SENIOR girls in action on Monday in the semi-final of the BAISS basketball sudden death playoffs. The Jordan Prince William Falcons routed the Queenâ€™s College Comets 66-27. The Falcons outscored the Comets by 17 in the third quarter en route to the most lopsided win of the day. Brianna Stevens led the Falcons with 18 points, Shanique Thompson had 15 and Dwaynique Rolle added 12. Tyler Lightbourne led the Comets with eight points. The Falcons raced out to an 8-0 lead but QC responded with eight unanswered points to the game on a #4 jumper. After a Falcons score, QC took their first lead of the game on a three and led 14-10 on a Esther Sweeting corner three. The Falcons tied the game again at 14 after scores from Stevens and Thompson. Rolle gave the Falcons a 15-14 lead at the end of the first. Tied at 16, a Stevens three from the wing gave the Falcons some breathing room with a two-possession lead. The Falcons took their fist double-digit lead, 27-16 on #0 runner. They eventually took a 32-18 lead into the half.
