On the evening of January 20, 2021, Evan passed away peacefully at his home off Montagu Heights. He was a Bahamian native, born in Nassau, New Providence on March 22, 1961. Evan thoroughly enjoyed all the nature the island offers, from taking daily swims in the beautiful sea to walking the trails, and often popping in to Ardastra Gardens to admire all the creatures. Evan was an avid bird watcher and an active member of the Bird Club of New Providence. The Club’s birdwatching outings were always a highlight of his weekends. He was also an active member of the Bahamas National Trust. Evan’s favorite pastimes at home were reading, completing crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy. His true passion in life, however, was caring for his beloved turtles. Evan meticulously cared for every turtle, always making sure each one had a full belly and fresh water daily. Evan’s love for his turtles was truly admirable and many family members and friends have fond memories of helping with the daily turtle care. Also dear in Evan’s heart was his sweet cat, Sir Kit Kat, who showed up at his house one day as a stray kitten and quickly earned a special spot in Evan’s life. Evan also had many beloved dogs throughout the years, all of whom were always spoiled and a top priority of his daily routine. Evan was an alum of St. Andrews International School, and was a proud member of the graduating class of 1978. Sadly, Evan was predeceased by his father George (2005), mother Olive (2015), brothers Howard (1955) and John (2005), and sisters Rosamund (1984) and Suzanne (2005). Evan’s passing leaves many hearts heavy and he will be greatly missed by his nephew Matthew Herbert and his wife Candi; Niece Jennifer Eiland; Niece Jessica Surovek and her husband Clay; Niece Julia Roach and her husband Josh; Niece Tamara Armitage and her husband Phil; Niece Tasha Klimczak and her husband Cyril; and eleven grand nephews and nieces. OSPEL artist and JOY FM radio personality Ricardo Clarke reached another major milestone last Friday, as he was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace of The Bahamas. This comes on the heels of his receiving a doctorate in Christian Education from the New Covenant University (NCU) in St Augustine, Florida, last year. He told The Tribune his achievements have broadened his horizons and have made him better suited to create educational tools and policies for students and schools, and his “Occupy” mentorship programme. Ricardo’s “Occupy” initiative aims to shape character, teach discipline, foster business acumen and promote health within
the youth. Core areas of the programme include education, vocation/trade, entrepreneurship, faith, philanthropy, health education, financial literacy, and etiquette. In response to his latest accomplishment, Ricardo said: “This is an incredible honour. I am grateful to God for the opportunity to serve, hopefully with distinction. I will certainly try. 2020 has been an unusual year with many learning experiences, however, I have had a few personal milestones. “I was able to complete my PhD studies in Christian Education. I was appointed as a marriage officer. I completed 70 plus hours of ICF accredited training, and became a certified professional coach.” Additionally, “Occupy”

A new platform to celebrate local gospel music artists Inaugural awards show to be held in June BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET AT the heart of their craft lies the desire to minister to people and share the gospel of Jesus Christ, but members of the local gospel music scene feel it is also important to recognise and celebrate the artists in this field. They are doing this with the inaugural Bahamas Gospel Music Awards, which will be held on Saturday, June 12. The BGMAs will take on the form of a televised award show that highlights gospel music artists throughout the islands representing various genres. Adhering to COVID-19 health protocols, the award show will be a virtual affair, but will nevertheless feature performances by some of the top gospel artists in the country. “I believe in documenting information and history, and I realised there aren’t many shows that highlight the gospel music community in The Bahamas. So I decided to start the BGMAs that will celebrate and showcase our gospel artists,” said Travis Edgecombe, executive director and producer of
the awards. Any new material that was released from January 2019 and December 2020 will be eligible for submission. Categories include Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Junkanoo/Rake n’ Scrape Song of the Year, Traditional Gospel Song of the Year, Contemporary Song of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Album of the Year. Viewers will be allowed to vote for Radio Personality and Radio Station of the Year. Special honorary awards will be the Trailblazer Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Those recipients will be announced at a later time. “Even though gospel artists don’t minister for fame and fortune, they do it for the honour and glory of God. We understand the importance of giving people their flowers while they are alive. A lot of gospel artists have been ministering through music

for many years and go without being recognised. We want to change that. We want to celebrate showcase and honour them,” said Mr Edgecombe. Audience members participating in the virtual event can expect heartwarming performances that give God all the glory, he added. “Our team is working diligently in making sure that God gets the glory through all of this while celebrating each other. Our host will be Jaquay Adderley and Jillian Gray.” The deadline for submissions is March 1. On Saturday, March 20, the BGMAs will host a gospel music forum that will feature various gospel industry executives, artists and musicians to discuss the current state of the industry. The 2021 nominees will be announced on Monday, April 5, during a virtual event. Whether it’s serving in the church’s media department in the past, being a youth pastor, visiting a school to speak to a teacher about a young person in my care, releasing music or preaching the sacred gospel of Jesus Christ; it has always been about service. My parents would always say, especially my Dad, ‘Do all you can, while you can’,” said Ricardo. For 2021, he hopes to resume his work in local schools; guidance
counsellors are advising him in this respect. Additionally, he is also expanding his professional service as a coach and will be working more with individuals seeking to enhance their life skills. “I am thrilled at the opportunity to function as a Justice of the Peace, and coupled with my other skills, will seek to be of greater service to my community and country,” said Ricardo.

From Biden’s giant Bible to Christian flags, ‘religion’ means different things to different people and different eras By SAMUEL L BOYD Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Jewish StudiesUniversity of Colorado Boulder THE Bible featured prominently in the inauguration. In fact, three were used in the swearing-in ceremonies – Kamala Harris used both Thurgood Marshall’s and one belonging to a friend; Joseph Biden used a 128-year-old family Bible. About two weeks earlier, on January 6, rioters who stormed the US Capitol also held Bibles as a nod to the apparent religious motivations for their actions. The mob took with them flags saturated with Christian nationalist ideology,
such as banners with “Jesus Saves” written on them accompanied by chants that “Christ is king, Trump is president”. These and other religious symbols, used both in the service of the presidential transfer of power and also violent protests, demonstrate how deeply religion can motivate people in society and influence their actions politically. Yet the way people think about religion these days, often as a set of beliefs, has evolved across time and cultures. RELIGION IN ANCIENT NEAR EAST As a scholar of the Bible and the ancient Near East,
I study the role of religion in history and how this term originated and came to be understood over the centuries. For most cultures in the ancient world, such as Egypt, Assyria and Babylon, until the second century BC, there was no word for “religion” as a singular, abstract concept. While these cultures had rituals and rites for worshiping gods and goddesses, there was not a singular word in these languages that refers to “religion” in the modern sense. For example, the Assyrians had a unique blend of religious devotion to their chief god Assur and a belief in a divine mandate to spread their empire, but they
did not have one word to cover all such practices and beliefs. The same is true for the Old Testament, written in Hebrew and Aramaic from approximately the ninth century BC to the second century BC There is no word that can really be translated as “religion” in the modern sense in the Old Testament, even if there were religious concepts, such as prayers and acts of piety toward the god of Israel. The evidence from the ancient Near East and the Old Testament points to a complex set of practices that defy a singular notion of religion, such as a creed of faith or spirituality in distinction from other realms
of society such as politics or economics. EARLY CHRISTIANITY A similar complexity appears in the history of early Christianity in how religion functioned, both in terms of rituals and in the use of the Latin term it derives from. The word “religion” in English originates from the Latin “religio”. One of its earliest appearances is in works such as the plays of second-century BC writer Plautus. According to the classicist Niall Slater, the word defies “a theologically rigorous definition” in Plautus. It means something like “awe” in one passage, as well as reserve, in the often ironic sense of characters who find themselves in situations in which they display restraints from certain impulses. For example, in one scene in Plautus’ “Asinaria”, a woman is bound by a contract from following other male lovers, including gods, a restraint called “religiosa”. In the classical age, religion could possibly imply “scruples”, as evident in the writings of Plautus and certainly a few decades later in the writings of playwright Publius Terentius Afer. By the first century BC, the word began to be associated with devotion to the divine realm. As seen in the writings of the orator and politician Cicero, one conception of the Latin religio that became frequent in Roman texts was the specific rituals and rites that were a part of worship of the gods and goddesses. According to the classicist Clifford Ando and scholar of religion Brent Nongbri, for Cicero each ritual could be a religio, and, at the same time, when Romans performed all such rituals they could together be referred to as a “single, Roman, religio”. However, Roman thinkers did not use this term for Christianity in its earliest phases. In the second century AD, Roman writers such as Pliny, Tacitus and Suetonius labeled Christianity not a religio but rather a superstitio, or a “superstition”, a term usually applied to non-Roman, foreign practices. Eventually Galen, a physician and philosopher who died in AD 210 in Rome, would call Christianity a “philosophical school”,
elevating the status of the movement. Early Christians who wrote in Latin, beginning with Tertullian in the second century AD, often used the word religio to refer to their own rituals and rites, though other uses appeared as well, which were inherited from the variety of definitions employed by earlier Latin writers. The ancient Latin translations of the New Testament, which was originally written in Greek, use religio when rendering passages such as James 1:26-27, which described true religion as care for orphans and widows and keeping oneself unstained from worldly pollution, or sin. MODERN-DAY INTERPRETATION So how did the modern interpretation of religion come about? If, according to 19th-century German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach, humans are prone to imagining God in their own image, then according to the scholar of religion Brent Nongbri people are often tempted to do the same with our understanding of the word “religion”. As Nongbri observes, people need to be aware that when they encounter the word “religion” in English translations of ancient sources, it is not the same as spirituality or belief in the sense of an abstract set of convictions. Often religion is thought of as referring to some inner disposition or abstract belief, such as privately held convictions about salvation separate from politics. The 17th-century thinker John Locke argued this point in his book, “A Letter Concerning Toleration”. Yet, as Nongbri argues, the concept of religion as an activity distinct from others, such as “politics, economics, and science”, is a recent and modern contrast, alien to ancient societies. In ancient societies, religion was part of every facet of life because gods and goddesses were involved in every facet of life. Indeed, the inner, spiritual and privatised nature of what many think of as religion is more a reflection of modern Protestant Christian developments and has little to do with the origins of the term. • Originally published on theconversation.com

UNDER the theme: “Baptist Men at Work”, the Men’s Department of the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention held a service of Thanksgiving on Sunday, January 10, at First Baptist Church. Men’s Director Rev Stephen Ferguson of the Hillside Missionary Baptist Church said it was important for the men to come together and express their gratitude to the almighty God for allowing them to function at the end of 2020, despite the coronavirus pandemic. Inspired by the vision he received from the Lord, Rev Ferguson was able to galvanise the men to feed breakfast to more than 300 persons in New Providence on Saturday, November 28, in the parking lot at Hillside Missionary Baptist Church on the Independence Drive Highway. Two weeks later, the men’s department packaged more than 700 grocery bags that they distributed on Saturday, December 12, to people in need in their community churches as well as the Family Island. During the thanksgiving service, the Rev Dr Philip McPhee, pastor of the Mount Calvary Baptist Cathedral, delivered the message, praising Rev Ferguson, his executive team
and the Baptist men for their devoted service. Rev Dr McPhee, the first vice president of the National Baptist Convention, joined Second Vice President Rev Stanley Ferguson, Assistant Director Rev Samuel Lightbourne and Executive Secretary Deacon Patrick Sweeting in making presentations to deserving members of the Men’s Department. Deacon Sweeting, who hails from Faith United Missionary Baptist Church, was highlighted as the Most Supportive Executive Member; Evangelist Walter Pratt Jr of the Friendship Community Baptist Church was lauded as the Most Supportive Men’s President; Rev Lockwood Deleveaux, Senior Pastor at Hillside Missionary Baptist Church was named the Most Supportive Pastor and Minister Anthony Garrison of the First Baptist Church was selected as the Baptist Man of the Year. The Baptist Men’s Department has a number of initiatives that they plan to take on in 2021, including the feeding of the community on a monthly basis; a blood drive; a home improvement of a senior citizen in the community and a back-to-school giveaway.
